Horrific phone calls reveal how Italian Coast Guard let dozens of refugees drown - Mercy Refugees House
Please hurry, Mr Jammo repeats. The boat is going down. When he later calls the Coast Guard to ask if they had sent anyone, an operator tells Mr Jammo to call Malta. Because you are near Malta, the man explained. Call Malta directly very quickly, they are close, OK? Mr Jammo then called the Italian Coast Guard again to tell them he had called Malta and been told the boat was closer to Lampadusa than Malta. We are dying, please, he added. But the operator repeated the instruction, telling him: You have to call Malta, sir. During the ordeal, the Italian Navys patrol boat Libra was awaiting orders between 10 to 19 miles away. In a call to the operations room of the Armed Forces of Malta, an Italian coast guard operator voiced his concern that if the patrol boat was dispatched it would have to transfer the refugees to the nearest coast, which would have been Lampedusa. I think it is not the best way to operate, he explains, going on to say it would mean the loss of an asset in the ...

New motor yacht combines advanced design, style and comfort at sea - Baltic Yachts
Bill and Me was commissioned by experienced owners who wanted all the seamanlike design and comfort of a sailing yacht combined with the speed and ease of use of a comfortable motor yacht. Naval architecture is by German Mani Frers and her remarkable interior is largely inspired and specified by her owners with professional input from Design Unlimited.. Baltic Yachts deep experience with light, stiff advanced composite construction ideally suits a fast motor yachts need to perform at speed and during trials Bill and Me met all her predicted performance parameters with ease.. Interestingly, Frers observes that the speed of large, fast sailing yachts now virtually matches that of relatively fast motor yachts and he believes much can be learned from both disciplines to produce highly efficient hull forms.. Frers has studied recent commercial ship research into making vessels as efficient as possible, resulting in the motion of his motor yachts becoming less aggressive. This has had the ...
Paralia (Bacillariophyta) stowaways in ship ballast: implications for biogeography and diversity of the genus | Journal of...
The genus Paralia Heiberg is one of the most recognizable, widely distributed and commonly reported diatoms from contemporary coastal marine environments and ship ballast. Species discovery has historically been made in diatoms through the recognition of morphological discontinuities between specimens, first using light and later electron microscopy. However, recently, morphologically semi-cryptic species of Paralia were delineated using genetic analyses, among mostly tropical and subtropical sites. Ten morphological characters of the frustules and sequence fragments from the nuclear genome (conserved 18S regions of ribosomal RNA and the variable internal transcribed spacer [ITS]), and from the RuBisCo large subunit (rbcL) gene of the chloroplast genome were examined. Frustule morphology did not segregate species, however, comparisons of sequence fragments and ITS2 secondary structures yielded a new species from North American waters, P. guyana (with four genodemes), and another widely-distributed

Asbestos Exposure Shipyards | Mesothelioma Asbestos Lawsuit, Lawyer, Law Firm, Attorney
Shipyard workers who served between World War II and the Korean War were very likely exposed to asbestos. The material was ideal for use in shipbuilding because of its ability to resist corrosion and high temperatures. It has been used as insulation for boilers, incinerators, hot water pipes and steam pipes. The asbestos dust tended to build up around these areas and other inadequately ventilated parts of the ship, which led to human exposure aboard vessels.. Navy veterans who worked below deck on naval warships or submarines were also likely to develop mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure. They worked (and sometimes lived) in extremely tight quarters with dangerously high levels of asbestos dust lingering in the air. Poor ventilation systems prevented adequate air exchange and resulted in highly concentrated levels of asbestos to remain in the air for Navy personnel to breathe in. Unfortunately, because Navy veterans and shipyard workers carried the asbestos dust and fibers home on their ...

Two 2014 South Carolina Boating Accident Deaths Prompt State Senators to Propose Improvements to Maritime Safety Laws - LMAW, PA
Any boating accident attorney at our firm can tell you that though there are several maritime laws across the United States that were enacted with the purpose of regulating safety on open waters, tragic accidents continue to occur. Sometimes, the laws in place are not strict enough and do not sufficiently protect the safety of boaters. Other times, boaters ignore these laws and engage in reckless actions, such as drinking while boating or speeding, which can lead to serious - if not fatal - outcomes.. Unfortunately, many boating accident victims are unaware of their rights - especially rights concerning their safety and rights to take action following injury or loss of a loved one. However, the parents of two young women who were killed in unrelated boat accidents in Lake Marion last year in South Carolina took a stand, hoping that their tragic experiences can call attention to the dangers of boating, as well as lead lawmakers to improve maritime safety regulations in the state.. And, it appears ...
Mortality from cardiovascular disease in a cohort of Swedish seafarers
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether Swedish seafarers have increased mortality from cardiovascular disease compared with the general population.. METHODS: Register-based longitudinal cohort study of 85,169 Swedish seafarers where all subjects with a minimum of 30 days service registered in the Seafarers Register 1985-2013 were included. To Lead Marine Environmental Industry with ECS (Electro-Cleen System) - Korean-Machinery.com
ECS - the Most Effective Ballast Water Management with Electrolysis Technology. Techcross ECS (Electro-Cleen System) is the most eff ective ballast water management system using electrolysis technology. ECS uses application of electric currents to the titanium electrodes, the electric potential produced increases disinfection effi cacy by destroying cell membranes of microorganisms as a result of generating voltage.. In addition, OH-radicals generated during the electrolysis procedure by the electrodes also disinfect microorganisms. Through electrolysis, a suffi cient amount of TRO is generated, preventing the re-growth of microorganisms and maintaining disinfection effi cacy. Also, ECS treats ballast water only once just during ballasting. Many other BWMS treat both at ballasting and deballasting. ECS will guarantee the long-term performance and provide fl exibility of vessel operating for ship owners with relatively simple installation for shipyards.. This system was among the fi rst to gain ...

Seriously Joking: Dinner with friends, awaiting my London visit, and more
Coming now to bad news ... the situation in Yemen continues to alarm everyone who cares. I was seeing a photo-album of Yemen and was saddened to know that the civil war may permanently scar a wonderful nation. I am not too sure why Saudi Arabia is attacking Yemen, unless it is because their best friend U.S. has asked it to. The thing is, Saudi troops will not do a ground attack ... it does not have the will to do so. But even amidst this bit of bad news was the story of how Indian air forces, navy and even some merchant ships made a great effort to evacuate its own citizens, as well as helping citizens of other countries to leave war-torn Yemen. I am proud to tell you that the captain of one of the merchant ships that evacuated citizens of India and others from the port city of Aden was my childhood friend Mr. Shabbir Badsha ... great effort, sir. My greetings to you. ...

The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is a large (up to 17 m) whale, generally black in colour with occasional white belly patches and no dorsal fin. Right whales were once common in temperate waters of the Western Atlantic but were seriously depleted by whaling. An accurate population estimate for the species is yet to be calculated. The population of North Atlantic right whales in Atlantic Canadian waters was estimated in 2003 to number about 322 animals; however more recent estimates suggest the current population numbers about 350 animals. North Atlantic right whales are protected and listed under Schedule 1, Part 2 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA).

The Coast Guard urges beachgoers and swimmers to follow local beach advisories and safe swimming precautions, following a weekend where Coast Guard rescue teams responded to six cases related to swimming in New Jersey.. As storms move along the Atlantic coast over the course of hurricane season, surf and currents can increase in strength, creating dangerous conditions for beachgoers and swimmers.. Beachgoers and swimmers should follow local beach advisories and guidelines posted by lifeguards, as well as monitor weather reports from the National Weather Service.. It is more important than ever to swim near a lifeguard, said Unites States Life Saving Association vice president, Tom Gill. Rip currents are the number one danger at coastal and tidal beaches. Please check in with the lifeguards on arrival for present conditions and tips to keep your family safe during your visit.. In addition to following local guidelines, beachgoers may find surf zone forecasts here as well as information on rip ...
Sailing in Croatia: Michelin Guide to Croatias Coastal Restaurants - Total Croatia Sailing - Total Croatia Sailing
Sailing and gastronomy, you may not realise it but they go hand-in-hand. Not just because there is something about the sea and sailing which increases the appetite 10-fold; but because while you are sailing the myriad of gorgeous Croatian islands, the next best way (in my humble opinion) to experience it, is through the cuisine.. On the 1st March 2018, the Michelin released their 2018 guide and Croatia has reason to be excited with two new restaurants awarded a star (including the already one-star restaurant in Rovinj) and no less than 59 restaurants recommended or awarded the Gourmand Bib award (acknowledgment of a great menu with a reasonable price).. Among the restaurants listed, 22 are along the coast between Split and Dubrovnik which makes it quite convenient for one of the more popular sailing routes, Split - Dubrovnik. Working on a yacht part of my role is to recommend restaurants along our route and I always proffer restaurants for various reasons - fine dining, ambiance, authenticity, ...

North Atlantic right whales Archives - Page 45 of 55 - Saving Seafood
September 28, 2018 - SEAFOOD NEWS - A recent technical memorandum from NOAA on right whale recovery in 2018 could push the agency to require new limits on trap fishing technology.. In short, the memorandum says that the measures adopted to reduce the number of rope lines in the water have backfired.. Although the number of lines to individual buoys have been reduced, the remaining trawl strings have more traps and stronger rope.. The result is that whales are suffering more for entanglements than they were before the new rules were introduced.. The memorandum says that stronger rope contributed to an increase in the severity of entanglements.. Knowlton et al.(2012) showed that nearly 85% of right whales have been entangled in fishing gear at least once, 59% at least twice, and 26% of the regularly seen animals are entangled annually. These findings represent a continued increase in the percentage of whales encountering and entangling in gear, which grew from to 61.5% in 1995 (Hamilton et al. ...

ABSTRACT: The location of mating grounds used by Endangered North Atlantic right whales Eubalaena glacialis has eluded discovery despite centuries of whaling and decades of marine mammal surveys. If this species gestation duration is similar to the closely related southern right whale E. australis, then conception for the North Atlantic right whale occurs in the boreal winter. Between 2002 and 2008, aerial surveys identified half the North Atlantic population in the central Gulf of Maine between November and January. Generalized linear models indicated that significantly higher proportions of both known fathers and conceptive females were present in this region compared to most other areas seasonally inhabited by right whales. Their presence in the central Gulf of Maine during the estimated conception period strongly suggests that this region is a mating ground for the species. Roseway Basin, on the southwestern Scotian Shelf, also had high proportions of reproductive whales and may be the site ...

Quebec Commercial Fishing - Commercial Fishing
Commercial fishing is an important component of Quebecs economy. Quebecs most valuable fisheries are located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence where fishermen land lobster, snow crab, northern shrimp, scallops, groundfish, and others. Major fishing ports are found along the Gulf of Saint Lawrence North Coast and Gaspe Peninsula.. In coastal areas of Quebec, small scale fisheries include hand harvesting of soft-shell clams, mussels, Atlantic surfclams, and Atlantic razor clams.. Quebecs commercial fisheries are managed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) requires a fisher or assistant fisher certificate issued by the Bureau daccréditation des pêcheurs et des aides-pêcheurs du Québec (BAPAP) in order to acquire and manage an inshore commercial fishery enterprise in Quebec.. DFOs regional Small Craft Harbours Branch, in conjunction with local harbour authorities, operates and maintains a system of harbours critical to Quebecs commercial fishing industry.. Related ...
Commercial Fishing - Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council
Income from commercial fishing dramatically declined immediately after the spill, and for a variety of reasons, disruptions to income from commercial fishing continue today, as evidenced by changes in average earnings, ex-vessel prices and limited entry permit values. Natural variability in fish returns and a number of economic changes in the commercial fishing industry since 1989 probably mean that many of these changes in income are not directly attributable to the spill. However, these factors also make discerning spill-related impacts difficult. Economic changes confronting the industry include the increased world supply of salmon (due primarily to farmed salmonids) and corresponding reduced prices, entry restrictions in certain fisheries (such as Individual Fishing Quotas, for halibut and sablefish), allocation changes (e.g., a reduction in the allocation of Cook Inlet sockeye salmon to commercial fishermen), reduction in processing capacity, and spatial limitations of groundfish fisheries ...

Births of endangered right whales rebound
Not only did Foster give birth here, but so did her daughter. That made Foster one of a pair of new grandmothers among the 20 North Atlantic right whales that calved this winter.. More impressive than the Southeasts grandma whales may be the only right whale known to have given birth up north this year. Shes an old-timer named Wart, who had a grand-calf and also a great-grand-calf born this season. Right whales mature at about age 10 and give birth every three to five years.. And then theres a whale known only by her number, 1334. She gave birth to yet another approximately 12-foot, 2,000-pound bundle of joy this season. The new calf is her ninth recorded offspring, making her the most prolific right whale known.. The tally of births for the season, which is winding down in Georgia, is about average but comes as a relief after last years low count of only six babies born to the highly endangered species.. Right whale aerial surveys will continue through March 31 in south Georgia and through ...

Video: Homeland Security
So, two things that make boating so much fun is that we get to relax and we get to mess around. Safely, of course. But besides safety, the two things we never, and I mean never mess around with are the U.S. Coast Guard and Homeland Security restrictions. Out here on the water, the U.S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement officers protect all of us. Its a huge job. And with probable cause, they have the right to stop, board and examine any vessels to check for compliance with laws. Its pretty serious business. So if the U.S. Coast Guard or other law enforcement vessels signals you, you are required to maneuver so that they can board.. Homeland Security is vital to all of us, and they need our help in keeping our waterways safe and secure. Heres how you can help and stay out of serious trouble. Never approach any U.S. Naval vessel within 100 yards. And if youre within 500 yards, slow to a minimum speed. If you really need to pass within 100 yards of a U.S. Naval vessel for safe passage, you ...
CM Levine makes a pitch for NYC Ferry route in Harlem - New York City Council Member Mark Levine
Monday is the last day for New Yorkers to give their input on where the next NYC Ferry route should be, and one elected official is making a case for West Harlem.. 125th Street is crying out for ferry service, 7th District Council Member Mark Levine told Metro Friday. Weve already built the pier - this is a $30 million investment to build a wonderful, modern West Harlem pier.. From the early 1800s until it was demolished in 1965, the West Harlem pier was a hotbed of transportation activity, including a regular ferry that crossed the Hudson River to Palisades Amusement Park in Edgewater, New Jersey. The pier reopened in 2009 as part of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway and included infrastructure for a new ferry landing - making this site an ideal location for NYC Ferry service, Levine wrote in a letter to the NYC Economic Development Corporation Friday, which he shared exclusively with Metro.. In addition to providing shortened commutes and more transit options for New Yorkers as its ...
New Orleans steps up ferry service with duo from Metal Shark - Professional Mariner
The Mississippi River route previously was assigned to the 41-year-old Col. Frank X. Armiger, which frustrated commuters and tourists with unreliable service due to chronic mechanical issues. RTA 1 and RTA 2, moored for over two years while awaiting certificates of inspection from the U.S. Coast Guard, are now in service in New Orleans. Col. Frank X. Armiger will remain in the fleet as a backup vessel.. The certification issues with the new ferries involved the Regional Transit Authority (RTA), the current operator; Metal Shark Boats, the builder; and Transdev, the original operator. The problems have been resolved and the COIs issued. RTA 1 and RTA 2 signify the beginning of the next chapter in ferry service and regional transit connectivity in the Greater New Orleans region, said Alex Wiggins, CEO of the RTA. As we enter the two new ferry vessels into service, residents, commuters and visitors will experience a more reliable, comfortable, enjoyable and safe transit option, which will help ...
When Right Whale Threats End in Death - Georgia Wildlife Blog
Death came quickly for the calf. For the adult nicknamed Cottontail, it took months. There are fewer than 375 North Atlantic right whales left. The two leading threats pushing them closer to extinction are entanglement in commercial fishing gear and being hit by ships and boats. Within two weeks last month, the Southeast coast saw…
Ship Speed Restriction Lifted In Gulf of St. Lawrence | The Bend - CKNI
Ships travelling in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence no longer have to follow a temporary mandatory slowdown.. Transport Canada put a speed restriction in place last summer after the deaths of 12 North Atlantic Right Whales in the Gulf - many of which died from ship strikes.. No sightings of Right Whales have been recorded in recent weeks according to Transport Minister Marc Garneau.. Garneau says his department didnt hesitate to issue fines during the speed restriction and continues to investigate all reported cases of non-compliance.. He adds the federal government is continuing to work with partners including scientific experts along with industry and environmental groups to ensure these marine mammals are protected.. itf seafarers wages
Each year, crew members on about 1,500 ships complain to the ITF that their employer is unwilling or unable to pay their wages. As always, the ITF is on standby to assist in any way we can, said Arrachedi. With ITF help they were repatriated with USD$38,792 of their wages in hand. Indian, Turkish, Azerbaijaniani and Bangladeshi seafarers are in the third week of a hunger strike in the port of Shuaiba, Kuwait. However, the ITF Fair Practices Committee Steering Group (FPC SG), is disappointed that IMEC released the circular without prior consultation with the ITF. Palau is on the Paris MOU black list of underperforming flag states/ Job and income losses, and their unresolved abandonment case, have forced the seafarers to take a stand over their owed wages, says ITF. In 1998, US$41 million was recovered through the ITF for seafarers who had not been paid. If you find that your wages have not been paid, do not delay, and contact the nearest ITF inspector or email the ITF Seafarers Support team at ...

Protecting The Worlds Rarest Whales - gCaptain
Protecting right whale mothers and their young is critical to the recovery of the population, said Barb Zoodsma, NOAA Fisheries Service right whale biologist. The loss of any right whale is of concern, and we ask for everyone to adhere to measures that protect this critically endangered species.. Each year, pregnant females migrate southward more than 1,000 miles from feeding areas off Canada and New England to the warm, calm, coastal waters off South Carolina, Georgia and northeastern Florida to give birth and nurse their young. These waters are the only known calving area for the species.. Collisions with ships and entanglement in fixed fishing gear are the two greatest threats to the recovery of North Atlantic right whales, which is why it is important that all mariners and fishers are aware of the regulations. ...
Milford Yacht Club | MYC Frostbite fleet season has begun!
We know it is November by that familiar look on Sunday afternoon of a fleet of Dyer Dhows sailing out of the harbor. The Milford Frostbite Association is a winter sailing fleet under the auspices of the Milford Yacht Club, Fleet Captain. They sail 9′ Dyer Dhows in 2 Winter sessions; the 1st half runs from the 1st weekend in November to early January. The 2nd half begins in January and ends mid March. To get started, either stop by in person and ask for Fleet Captain Julia Carter, or send an email in advance to her at jlglcarter at yahoo dot com.. ...
Dolphin Fleet Naturalist Notebook 5 July to 11 July | Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch
Another unusual event occurred that day as many passengers got a chance to see a critically-endangered North Atlantic right whale. This whale was breaching within view of Long Point at the very tip of Cape Cod in Provincetown. Because of their critically endangered status (it is estimated that there are only between 350 - 400 of these animals left on the entire planet) a great deal of research effort is devoted to their population. Despite the heavy survey effort, there is still a lot that we dont know about these animals. At this time of year, many of the right whales in the population spend their time in the Great South Channel on their way up to the Bay of Fundy. Why would this particular animal return to Cape Cod Bay, a primary feeding ground in the late winter and early spring?. Due to federal regulations which require that we stay at least 500 yards from these animals, we were not able to get too close, but as we rounded Long Point on our way back to Provincetown Harbor, we felt excited ...

USS Pueblo (AGER-2)
USS Pueblo was originally built in 1944 for the U.S. Army as cargo ship, FP-344, at Kewaunee, Wisconsin. In April 1966, she was transferred to the U.S. Navy and designated as light cargo ship (AKL-44). Converted to an environmental research ship, Pueblo received the designation of (AGER-2). Following her commissioning in May 1967 and subsequent training, she departed to gather intelligence off Asia. While off Wonsan, North Korea, on January 23, 1968, Pueblo was attacked by North Korean forces and seized. In the process, one crew member was killed with the remaining eighty-two men taken prisoner. North Korea viewed that the ship violated territorial waters. This claim was denied by the United States. The crew was repatriated on December 23, 1968. Retained by North Korea, Pueblo was exhibited at Wonsan and Hungnam until relocated to be a museum at Pyongyang. Pueblo is still the property of the U.S. Navy.
