Atypical scrapie is a recently recognised form of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy of sheep that differs from classical scrapie in its neuropathological and biochemical features. Most cases are detected in apparently healthy sheep and information on the clinical presentation is limited. This report describes the clinical findings in two sheep notified as scrapie suspects and confirmed as atypical scrapie cases by immunohistochemistry and Western immunoblotting. Although both sheep displayed signs suggestive of a cerebellar dysfunction there was considerable variation in the individual clinical signs, which were similar to classical scrapie. Chaka sheep, named after Chaka Salt Lake, are adapted to a harsh, highly saline environment. They are known for their high-grade meat quality and are a valuable genetic resource in China. Coopworth sheep, a newly available genotype, were compared with other genotypes in two trials to assess cumulative lamb and wool production and contributing components related to survival, reproduction and growth, and for the effects of ewe body weight on reproductive traits. In a third trial, various genotypes generated in the process of upgrading native Kaghani sheep, were evaluated for lamb and wool production. In the first two trials six ewe genotypes, generated by mating Coopworth (C), Polypay (P) and Suffolk (S) rams to Polypay and Coopworth-type ewes, were exposed to Hampshire rams for spring lambing from 1986 through 1990. Overall conception rate averaged 96% and ranged from 93% for S X C ewes to 97% for P X C ewes. Sire breeds were not different in ovulation rate but daughters of Polypay dams averaged .18 higher ovulation rate than daughters of Coopworth dams (P,.05). The Spooner Agricultural Research Station is the site of the only dairy sheep research flock in North America. The station is located in northwestern Wisconsin (N 45.8, W 91.9) and is the oldest of the 12 research stations operated throughout Wisconsin by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The station was established in 1909 with a donation of 32 hectares of land to the University of Wisconsin by the city of Spooner. The station currently occupies 157 hectares and has active research programs in field crops, pasture, horticulture, and sheep production. AN interesting feature which has emerged from attempts to hybridise domestic sheep (Ovis aries) and goats (Capra hircus) is the marked difference in conception rate according to the direction in which the cross is made. In goats inseminated with sheep semen the conception rate is similar to that in goats mated naturally with male goats; whereas in sheep inseminated with goat semen fertilisation is an infrequent occurrence1-3. The low fertilisation rate in sheep inseminated with goat semen has been confirmed by Hancock4 who found that only 5 of 93 (5.4%) sheep eggs were fertilised by goat spermatozoa.

Connie Dunn won the Grand Champion Fleece prize at the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show earlier this month. The objective of present study was to investigate renal clearance, urinary excretion and underlying excretory mechanism of marbofloxacin in Lohi sheep. For this purpose, marbofloxacin was administered intravenously (IV) as single bolus dose (2.5 mg/kg body weight) to eight healthy sheep of Lohi breed. After start of experiment, blood and urine samples were drawn at predetermined time intervals and marbofloxacin concentrations in the samples were measured by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) using UV/Vis detector. The mean ± SD values of creatinine in plasma and urine were 15.37 ± 0.65 µg/ml and 246.7 ± 48.05 µg/ml, respectively. Glomerular filtration rate was 1.29 ± 0.22 ml/min/kg whereas urinary flow rate was observed to be 0.084 ± 0.016 ml/min/kg. There are two huge sheep drives of about 4000 animals from Schnalstal (South Tyrol) to Ötztal (Tirol) and back to South Tyrol again. This blog focuses on the sheep drive on 10 June 2017, starting in Schnalstals village of Vernagt am See with approximately 2000 animals driven across Niederjoch saddle (3019 m) into Ötztal valley and Niedertal Alm near Vent.
