The study, published today in the journal Royal Society: Open Science, is part a series of tests given to the sheep to monitor their cognitive abilities. Because of the relatively large size of their brains and their longevity, sheep are a good animal model for studying neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntingtons disease.. The ability to recognise faces is one of the most important human social skills. We recognise familiar faces easily, and can identify unfamiliar faces from repeatedly presented images. As with some other animals such as dogs and monkeys, sheep are social animals that can recognise other sheep as well as familiar humans. Little is known, however, about their overall ability to process faces.. Researchers from Cambridges Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience trained eight sheep to recognise the faces of four celebrities from photographic portraits displayed on computer screens.. Training involved the sheep making decisions as they moved around a ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Ultrasonographic assessment of growth and estimation of birthweight in late gestation fetal sheep. AU - Carr, David J. AU - Aitken, Raymond P. AU - Milne, John S. AU - David, Anna L. AU - Wallace, Jacqueline M. PY - 2011/10. Y1 - 2011/10. N2 - Our aim was to identify which ultrasound parameters can be most accurately measured and best predict ovine fetal weight in late gestation. Singleton pregnancies were established using embryo transfer in 32 adolescent ewes, which were subsequently overnourished to produce fetuses of variable size (1720-6260 g). Ultrasound measurements at 126-133 days gestation were compared with fetal weight/biometry at late-gestation necropsy (n = 19) or term delivery (n = 13). Abdominal circumference (AC) and renal volume (RV) correlated best with physical measurements (r = 0.78-0.83) and necropsy/birth weight (r = 0.79-0.84). Combination of AC + RV produced an estimated fetal weight equation [Log EFW = 2.115 + 0.003 AC + 0.12 RV - 0.005 RV2] with highest ...

Experiments were conducted to investigate which environmental cues were used by sheep when discriminating against patches of pasture contaminated with faeces. The influence of the spatial distribution of contaminated patches and the parasite infection status of sheep on avoidance of contaminated patches and ingestion of parasite larvae was also investigated. In experiment 1, sheep infected with the parasite Ostertagia circumcincta were given the opportunity to graze in uncontaminated or aggregated contaminated patches. Patch contamination comprised of either faeces from sheep infected with O. circumcincta larvae, faeces from uninfected sheep, or O. circumcincta larvae only. Infected sheep discriminated against faeces from parasite-infected animals and faeces from uninfected animals equally. Sheep did not discriminate against patches contaminated with parasite larvae only. In experiment 2, sheep infected with O. circumcincta and uninfected sheep grazed experimental plots with differing spatial ...

Flystrike in sheep is a myiasis condition, in which domestic sheep are infected by one of several species of flies which are external parasites of sheep. Fly strike in sheep is a condition where parasitic flies lay eggs on soiled wool or open wounds. After hatching, the maggots, bury themselves in the sheeps wool and eventually under the sheeps skin, feeding off their flesh. Once the larvae develop, flies continue to deposit eggs on to new or already infected sheep, starting the infection process over again. Sheep display symptoms such as agitation, odour and matted wool, all which further encourage the attraction of flies. Fly strike can be lethal for sheep due to ammonia poisoning. Fly strike is problematic, not only causing loss or degradation of stock, but also requiring expenditure of both money and time for effective management. In Australia, Lucilia cuprina causes about 90% of infestations, and Chrysomya rufifacies is the most common secondary pest the targets wounds caused by L. ...
The life expectancy of sheep is similar to a large dog breed of about ten to twelve years. Some sheep breeds are known to have a longer life cycle such as the Merino. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest sheep lived to be 23yrs. She was a Merino however; the length of a sheeps productive cycle is much shorter. A ewes offspring production is highest between three and six years of age and usually starts to decline after age seven. As a result, most ewes are removed from our flock prior to reaching their natural life expectancy. It is necessary to remove the older ewes in order to make room for the younger animals. As we mature our genetic line of sheep we must provide an adequate environment for the younger sheep to thrive. In harder environments, where forage is sparse, ewes are usually culled at an even younger age due to tooth ware and break down. It can become difficult for sheep in these conditions to maintain proper body condition and consume enough forage to feed ...
Keith Kendrick and colleagues at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, England, investigated the sheeps ability to distinguish and remember faces of both other sheep and humans. Presenting 20 sheep with pictures of 25 pairs of sheep faces, the researchers trained the animals to associate one of the pair with a food reward. They determined that the sheep could recognize the individuals associated with a reward even in profile and for up to two years. By measuring activity in the right temporal and medial frontal cortices-regions of the ovine brain associated with visual recognition-the team further discovered that sheep can remember as many as 50 sheep faces in addition to a familiar human face. And sightings of familiar faces do not go unacknowledged. The scientists report clear behavioral signs of recognizing both absent individuals by vocalizing in response to their face pictures in the same way as they did to faces of other members of their current social circle. So the next time you hear a ...
The dorper sheep is one of the largest species of meat sheep in the world. Developed in South Africa in the 1930s by crossing dorset-horned and black-headed Persian sheep, the sturdy dorper spread around the globe due to its ease of care and high meat output. Meat sheep are fed a slightly different diet than wool or milk sheep, resulting in larger muscle mass and higher weights on market day. ...
The aim of this work was to characterize lung function and cellular responses in a large animal model for chronic asthma. All sheep were sensitized to house dust mite (HDM) by subcutaneous injection of HDM before lung challenges. Groups of sheep were given weekly lung challenges with either HDM (n = 12) or saline (control, n = 5) for 3 months. Post challenge, there were significant increases in lung resistance in 7 out of 12 HDM-challenged sheep, compared to control sheep. In HDM-responding sheep, there was a progressive increase in the magnitude of HDM-induced resistance throughout the trial. All HDM-challenged sheep developed BAL eosinophilia and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. In conclusion, sheep chronically challenged intralung with HDM consistently develop airway hyperresponsiveness and eosinophilia, whereas allergen-specific bronchoconstriction is observed in just over half of these sheep ...
The names chosen for the lambs this year were Jamie, Yorkie and Willie, after the names of the cities in the Historic Triangle.. Sheep Week does not only increase excitement about Colonial Williamsburg in general, but also about their Rare Breeds program.. The breed of sheep we have - theyre called Leicester Longwool - originally came from England in the 18th century, Elaine Shirley, head of the Rare Breeds program, said. We know that George Washington had some of these sheep.. Today, the Leicester Longwool sheep are a rare breed in the United States.. The breed seems to have died out in this country between about 1920 and 1930, Shirley said. This is the 25th anniversary of these sheep returning to the United States, which Colonial Williamsburg did. We were the first ones to bring them back.. The 25th anniversary is made all the more special by the fact that this years lambs are triplets, a relatively uncommon occurrence.. The Leicester Longwool lambs are popular with tourists and ...
Paul tells us here about the pastors calling, and as he does that, he turns to the metaphor of sheep and shepherds. The pastor is an overseer or shepherd who cares for a flock. At the heart of ministry is this: the pastor is a shepherd called to tend sheep. But its important for the pastor to remember-not just once, but again and again-that the sheep are not his. He is merely an under-shepherd who labors on behalf of the Head Shepherd. This flock-these sheep-dont belong to the pastor. They dont exist for the pastor. They belong to God and exist for God. The pastor is to tend to them, to care for them, on behalf of God. However else a pastor relates to his sheep, and whatever else he does for the sheep, he must first care for them.. But here is what I have been pondering over the past few weeks or even months: The temptation among pastors to use the sheep instead of tend the sheep. As I travel far and wide, I encounter churches that seem to be accomplishing remarkable things, or at least that ...
From the rulebook: Every Sunday, you and your relatives meet at your dear Aunt Dolly’s place for tea and cupcakes. Dolly is a mad-keen knitter, whipping up a cosy garment every week. Its your job to supply her with the wool from her flock of happy sheep; the fleece of four sheep will meet her needs. However, she only wants wool of one colour- either black or white. And since her sheepdog Fang ran off with a Bichon Frise last year, those four sheep will need to be within arms reach for you to gather them in. Will you be the one who gathers the four sheep first, thereby winning Aunt Dolly’s biggest smile- and the biggest scone? Happy Sheep is a fast, fun game of strategy, memory and bluffing. It takes 15 seconds to set up, two minutes to learn, and five minutes to stop laughing when you trick someone into crying "Happy Sheep" and proving they don’t know black from white. Includes strategies for gamers and a simple variant for very young kids. How to play: Mix the 20
The gameplay is clever enough. In a fashion which feels inspired by the likes of Spy Mouse, Oh! Sheep has you navigate an obstacle course with the goal of getting all your sheep to the end. This is accomplished by drawing lines for each sheep to follow through and around a variety of traps - such as lasers, cannonballs, and blockades.. Along the way, your sheep will find berries to eat and obstacles associated with different colors, including their natural white. Youll need to time the movements of the sheep to get between the traps, as well as position them to activate their color-coordinated switches while the other sheep get through other portions of the stage. At the end, each must be moved to the appropriately-colored transporter so they can be picked up by a UFO and whisked away.. Generally speaking, its playable - and even fun - but there are a few issues which detract from the overall experience. One is that moving the sheep can be a bit tricky. While drawing lines works well enough, ...

The Gute (Swedish: Gutefår) is a landrace-based breed of domestic sheep native to the Swedish island of Gotland. The Gute is the most primitive breed native to Sweden, and is one of the Northern European short-tailed sheep. The modern Gotland (Swedish: Gotlandsfår) breed is its direct descendant. Unlike the Gotland, the Gute is horned in both rams and ewes, and has a fleece that appears in a wider variety of colors and patterns, which may be shed in the summer. This breed is raised primarily for genetic conservation. The most common color of Gute are grey. The ones that are dark grey have black heads and legs. Light grey Gute have white and tan hair on their legs and head. Grey and Black sheep typically have light hair around the eyes and face. The white sheep are seldom all white. White sheep usually have tan patches on the neck and other parts of the body. Most all non-white sheep have markings that are white. The markings can vary greatly. ram: 70-100 kg ewe: 45-60 kg ram: 64-84 cm ewe: ...

The mechanics to this game can be quickly summed up. Tap the screen to shoot the Zombie Marionettes, tilt your iDevice to move your sheep, and shake your iDevice to reload your weapon. When I say shoddily made marionettes, it is not a knock on the graphics but these silly puppets start falling apart the second they appear on the screen and unless you manage to shoot them in the head quickly, their heads will leave their crumbling bodies behind and take the form of a deadly Flaming Skull. Your poor little Bait Sheep not only has to avoid the raining Flaming Skulls (if one hits your poor little sheep you?ll lose one of your initial 3 hearts), but has to scramble about to collect the dropping coins (how your sheep can pickup and store these coins is never really explained). So now, even though you and your sheep are marked for death and you can?t escape the haunted theatre, you?re more than free at any time to duck out of the action for a trip to the concession stand for sheep medications and ...

Over the last two weeks or so, the weather has finally become good and grass growth rates are on the rise. This, in turn, has seen the majority of farmers let their ewes and lambs out to pasture and take their minds off what has been a terrible February and most of March in terms of weather. However, despite the good weather, two parasites known as coccidia and Nematodirus can cause problems for young lambs at this time of the year. These parasites can affect lambs at a similar age and stage of the year and can have serious health implications - in some cases leading to death - in lambs ...

Introduction. The largest part of South Africa is located in either an arid or semi-arid region, limiting possible agricultural production to pastoral use (Cloete & Olivier, 2010). Due to global weather changes tending towards a drier climate in the south-western parts of South Africa, natural food resources for livestock are forecast to diminish (Turpie et al., 2002). This changing scenario is expected to result in challenges to small stock farming as far as adaptation of animals and the sustainability of farming is concerned.. During 2011, South African sheep meat (lamb and mutton) consumption was estimated at 149 000 tons. Only 140 000 tons were produced within South Africa, clearly indicating a demand for increased and optimised sheep meat production in South Africa (DAFF, 2012; FAO, 2012). Thus, it is evident that the local animal genetic resources should be harnessed optimally to ensure sustainable sheep meat production under variable and often adverse conditions.. Owing to the association ...
However in rural economies in Ireland, where agriculture provides over 10% of employment and economic turnover, and in upland Wales or Devon where sheep are a major farming activity and sheep dips are routinely used to control parasites, heavy rainfall can cause used sheep dip to leach out into waterways and sediments where it can kill huge quantities of fish.. Synthetic pyrethroids are also extremely toxic to aquatic invertebrates such as leeches, water snails and beetles and are particularly toxic to bees which can lead to problems with pollination. Once the poison is absorbed by these animals it can move up the food chain, accumulating as it goes. In order to prevent pollution of this kind, we looked at bacteria taken from sheep dip contaminated soils in the hope that they could degrade the pyrethroids in the sheep dip before it is spread on land, said Dr Cannon.. 30 different bacteria were isolated from sheep dip polluted soil and dipping tanks. Previously, similar bacteria had been found ...

One of the more bizarre runner games, Sheep Happens takes some Greek myths and legends and mixes them with random sheep and a lot of humour. You take on the role of Perseus, who is on the trail of Hermes in a pair of winged sandals that just wont stop running. To catch him, you have to run through a stadium filled with athletes taking part in various events. Weightlifting sheep. Tug of war sheep. Hurdles, with the odd sheep running the track beside you. You get the idea; sheep are everywhere. There is some help. You have a cape that allows you to glide over some of the more difficult hurdles. And should you cause a sheep-filled chain reaction, the animals raining down will helpfully take out fellow athletes, hurdles and other obstacles, while also earning you a nice combo score. There are battles with Olympic gods too, in this chaotic, funny take on the traditional runner ...

Figure 3. Fleece rot is the major predisposing cause of body strike in sheep. The dermatitic exudate is seen as the brownish, cakey material in the fleece. The green colouration is produced by the opportunist pathogen, Pseudomonas areuginosa.. Why is body strike, and not breech strike, the main type of fly strike ? Because most Merino sheep in Australia have been mulesed since the 1960s, breech strike is seen infrequently. Mulesing removes breech skin wrinkles (with shears) so that the skin, once healed, is difficult to wet and dries quickly. Probably the only time breech strike becomes a problem in mulesed sheep is when sheep scour and faecal soiling occurs.. If mulesing stops, breech strike will automatically become the No. 1 problem. But only if the sheep are wrinkly. If the sheep are plain bodied, nothing happens, no fly strike of any kind.. Body strike outbreaks are confined to very wet periods during the warm months of the year. However, the incidence of body strike in young Merino sheep ...

In pregnant sheep receiving NaCl supplementation during the third trimester, reduction of aortic pressure caudal to the kidneys to 65% of the upstream pressure (occlusion) caused a progressive increase in mean arterial pressure from 89 ± 3 to 110 ± 3 mm Hg over 2 weeks. Occlusion was accompanied by a decrease in urine flow. Six of seven sheep died or were killed because of severe respiratory distress. No abnormalities were detected in nonpregnant sheep or pregnant sheep receiving NaCl supplementation only. Pregnant sheep that were occluded but received no ...
Classical scrapie is an environmentally transmissible prion disease of sheep and goats. Prions can persist and remain potentially infectious in the environment for many years and thus pose a risk of infecting animals after re-stocking. In vitro studies using serial Protein Misfolding Cyclic Amplification (sPMCA) have suggested that objects on a scrapie-affected sheep farm could contribute to disease transmission. This in vivo study aimed to determine the role of field furniture (water troughs, feeding troughs, fencing and other objects that sheep may rub against) used by a scrapie-infected sheep flock as a vector for disease transmission to scrapie-free lambs with the prion protein genotype VRQ/VRQ, which is associated with high susceptibility to classical scrapie. When the field furniture was placed in clean accommodation sheep became infected when exposed to either a water trough (four out of five) or to objects used for rubbing (four out of seven). This field furniture had been used by the scrapie

Using polyacrylamide-gel isoelectric focusing followed by immunoblotting, genetic polymorphism of plasma vitamin D-binding protein (Gc) was examined in Asian sheep. The Gc polymorphism was revealed in the Khalkhas sheep of Mongolia, consisting of F, S and W variants, and the Yunnan native sheep of China, consisting of F and S variants. In particular, W was a new variant. The V variant detected in European sheep up to now was not observed in these sheep. The Bhyanglung, Baruwal, Kagi and Lampuchhre sheep of Nepal and local sheep of Bangladesh and Vietnam were monomorphic for the S variant. Family data and population genetic data supported the hypothesis that these variants were controlled by codominant alleles. In these Asian sheep, distribution of the |TEX|$Gc^s$|/TEX| allele was predominant (0.9571-1) and was seen as well in European sheep (Suffolk, Corriedale, Cheviot and Finnish Landrace) raised in Japan. |TEX|$Gc^w$|/TEX| allele was detected only in the Khalkhas sheep with the low frequency of 0
Atypical scrapie is a recently recognised form of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy of sheep that differs from classical scrapie in its neuropathological and biochemical features. Most cases are detected in apparently healthy sheep and information on the clinical presentation is limited. This report describes the clinical findings in two sheep notified as scrapie suspects and confirmed as atypical scrapie cases by immunohistochemistry and Western immunoblotting. Although both sheep displayed signs suggestive of a cerebellar dysfunction there was considerable variation in the individual clinical signs, which were similar to classical scrapie. Any sheep presenting with neurological gait deficits should be assessed more closely for other behavioural, neurological and physical signs associated with scrapie and their presence should lead to the suspicion of scrapie.
This study aimed at investigating effects of dandelion/probiotic on the testis histology and semen characteristics of male lambs. Twelve prepuberal Noemi male lambs (2 ± 0.4-month-old and 20 ± 3.5 kg B.W) were randomly allocated into four groups. Animals in group 1 were controlled, orally given normal saline as the same schedule of treated animals. In group 2 animals were given daily oral 50 ml of an aqueous extract of dandelion leaves. In group 3 animals were given a daily 50 ml of cows milk probiotics, and in group 4 animals were given 50 ml of a 1:1 mixture (dandelion extract: probiotic). Animals were treated for 8 consecutive weeks. At puberty, semen ejaculates were collected weekly for further 10 weeks. Thereafter, animals were sacrificed and testicles were obtained, weighed and a histopathological study was performed on the testis. Results revealed that oral administration of the dandelion aqueous extract to prepuberal lambs exhibited disturbances in the histological architecture of the
The Nature Trust of British Columbia is seeking to purchase and protect an 87.5-acre area of bighorn sheep habitat on the east side of Skaha Lake in the provinces southern region. About 500 bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) utilize this area for foraging and lambing according to The Nature Trusts CEO, Jasper Lament. The parcel sits adjacent to the McTaggart-Cowan/Nsəkłniwt Wildlife Management Area which provides the sheep with over 16,000 acres of protected habitat. If The Nature Trust is successful in acquiring the property, the group will focus management on increasing the quality of the lands available habitat while improving sheep movement via habitat connectivity.. Bighorn sheep populations in North America have significantly declined during the past 150 years, due in part to disease outbreaks caused by contact with domestic sheep. Lament hopes that the acquisition of the Skaha Lake Eastside property will help managers maintain the separation between bighorn sheep and domestic sheep in ...

To study the pathogenesis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy infection in small ruminants, two Lacaune sheep with the AA136RR154QQ171 and one with the AA136RR154RR171 genotype for the prion protein, were inoculated with a brain homogenate from a French cattle BSE case by peripheral routes. Sheep with the ARQ/ARQ genotype are considered as susceptible to prion diseases contrary to those with the ARR/ARR genotype. The accumulation of disease-associated prion protein (PrPd) was analysed by biochemical and immunohistochemical methods. No PrPd accumulation was detected in samples from the ARR/ARR sheep 2 years post inoculation. In the two ARQ/ARQ sheep that had scrapie-like clinical symptoms, PrPd was found in the central, sympathetic and enteric nervous systems and in lymphoid organs. Remarkably, PrPd was also detected in some muscle types as well as in all peripheral nerves that had not been reported previously thus revealing a widespread distribution of BSE-associated PrPd in sheep tissues ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Lipoprotein distribution in sheep lung lymph. AU - Cross, Carroll E. AU - Forte, T. M.. AU - Gunther, R. A.. AU - Kramer, G. C.. PY - 1983. Y1 - 1983. N2 - The composition of lymph draining the sheep caudal mediastinal lymph node is believed to reflect the composition of lung interstitial fluid. Although long-term lymph fistulas have been extensively utilized in studies related to lung microvascular fluid and protein flux, attention has thus far not been focused on lipoproteins as they might appear in lung interstitial space. We therefore characterized the lipoprotein distributions and measured triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations of lung lymph and plasma in nine unanesthetized sheep with long-term embedded instrumentation. We also measured triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations in prefemoral and thoracic duct lymph. The plasma LDL concentration was 55.3 ± 20.2 mg/dl and HDL concentration was 99.9 ± 27.2 mg/dl. By comparison, the lung lymph LDL concentration was ...

Abstract. Baihaqi ZA, Nurcahyo W, Widiyono I. 2020. Prevalence naturally infected gastrointestinal parasites and complete blood count condition on Wonosobo sheep at Wonosobo District, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3057-3061. The aim of this study was to determine complete blood count of Wonosobo sheep infected with internal parasites on sheep farms in Wonosobo District, Central Java, Indonesia. Fecal and blood samples were taken from 130 female Wonosobo sheep. Fecal samples were individual and the numbers of worm eggs per gram of feces (eggs per gram, EPG) were counted. Complete blood count analyzed with a hematology analyzer machine and total protein were measured with a refractometer. The total average prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) parasite infections in the Wonosobo sheep are 66.92%. The prevalences of low EPG and high EPG GI parasite infections in female Wonosobo sheep were 19.23% and 47.69%. The gastrointestinal worm species found infecting female Wonosobo sheep in this ...
Chaka sheep, named after Chaka Salt Lake, are adapted to a harsh, highly saline environment. They are known for their high-grade meat quality and are a valuable genetic resource in China. Furthermore, the Chaka sheep breed has been designated a geographical symbol of agricultural products by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. The genomes of 10 Chaka sheep were sequenced using next-generation sequencing, and compared to that of additional Chinese sheep breeds (Mongolian: Bayinbuluke and Tan; Tibetan: Oula sheep) to explore its population structure, genetic diversity and positive selection signatures. Principle component analysis and a neighbor-joining tree indicated that Chaka sheep significantly diverged from Bayinbuluke, Tan, and Oula sheep. Moreover, they were found to have descended from unique ancestors (K = 2 and K = 3) according to the structure analysis. The Chaka sheep genome demonstrated comparable genetic diversity from the other three breeds, as indicated by observed heterozygosity (Ho),

An interesting question comes this week from Pat Fraser who says, I will soon be 65, and I always had a Jersey milk cow. Can I milk sheep, too? I love the meat. Can they be as friendly as a LaMancha or Nubian goats? Pat, you can certainly milk sheep instead of dairy goats or cows. Sheep milk is very rich. It has nearly twice the butterfat of cows milk, and its higher in vitamins A, B and E, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium, too. Plus, because it has a higher solids content than goats or cows milk, you can make lot more cheese per gallon using sheeps milk. If you want to milk sheep you should get specialized dairy sheep. In the United States, the main dairy sheep breed is the East Friesian, a triple-purpose milk, meat and wool breed developed in the Friesland region of northern Germany and the Netherlands, where they were historically kept in small numbers as household dairy providers. East Friesians are white, with ears that stick out to the sides, wool-free heads, legs and ...

Crossbreeding between indigenous and exotic sheep breeds is the fastest method of increasing the performance of sheep in the tropics. The aim of this work was to assess the performance of Cameroon sheep (C) and their crossbreds (Cameroon x Mutton, F1) and (F2 from Cameroon x Milk sheep) under different housing and feeding conditions. The following traits were analysed: - Pre-weaning performance during the first 90 days; 127 animals, C, F1 and F2. - Post-weaning growth performance at different feeding levels; changing from 1.5 x maintenance to ad libitum feed intake and vice versa; duration 6 weeks; 30 animals; C, F1 and F2. - Housing of lambs under temporal heat stress (8 hours daily at 31°C and 50% relative humidity); duration 12 weeks; 10 animals, C and F2 - Carcass traits; 40 lambs, C, F1 and F2. Results: - During the pre-weaning period the crossbred lambs showed a higher live weight gain than the Cameroon lambs, 213g/d (F1); 236g/d (F2) and 143g/d (C) respectively, that is an increase of ...
During the last 50 years, nearly all of the endemic bighorn sheep populations in the interior of Arizona have been extirpated. The Silver Bell Mountains near Tucson maintain the last endemic bighorn sheep population from what was no doubt a population complex that included the Santa Rita, Catalina, and Rincon mountains. As a result, it is important to ensure that this unique population is maintained and to evaluate the potential management options to sustain long-term viability in this remnant population. Our research objectives are to: (1) evaluate habitat conditions in the Silver Bell complex to assess potential for natural expansion or supplemental transplants; (2) identify travel corridors between mountainous habitats; (3) use frequent GPS-equipped collar locations to evaluate adequacy of previous habitat evaluation models currently applied to sheep management; (4) monitor a recent disease outbreak in this population, treat infected individuals, and identify potential implications; and (5) ...
A group of sheep is called a flock. Sheep follow each other in basically the same way all the time, so there are special names for the different roles sheep play in a flock. The sheep that is farthest away from the others is called the outlier, a word that is also used in statistics. This sheep is willing to go out farther away from the safety of the flock to graze, but takes a chance that a predator like a wolf will attack it first, because it is alone. Another sheep, the bellwether, which never goes first but always follows an outlier, is the one that signals to the others that it is safe to go that way. When it moves, the others will also move. Tendency to be outliers or to be bellwethers, or stick in the middle of the flock, seems to stay with a sheep its whole life. There might be genes that make them repeat this role behaviour. ...
Target: Meredith Leigh, Slaughter Instructor for Wild Abundance. Goal: Stop the unnecessary killing of a sheep.. A homesteading business, called Wild Abundance, in North Carolina plans on hosting an instructional class on how to slaughter an animal. The instructor will end a sheeps life while in front of an eager crowd. The killing is unnecessary and cruel.. After earning the sheeps trust and friendship, the instructor will cut the sheeps life drastically short. Wild Abundance preaches kindness and compassion. True compassion would be honoring this sheeps life and letting him live it to the fullest.. Sign this petition and demand Wild Abundance stop the slaughter of this innocent sheep and bring him to a sanctuary where he can stay safe.. PETITION LETTER:. Dear Ms. Leigh,. Wild Abundance plans on hosting a slaughter class where you will kill a sheep in front of an audience. Wild Abundance preaches about kindness and compassion, but killing an innocent animal is the complete opposite. The ...
When Ahern arrived at the scene, she, like the couple, believed the animal had passed away. She didnt move, even when I was standing right next to her, says Ahern. Another leg twitch proved her wrong. If it hadnt been for the urgency of the situation, I would have burst into tears at the pitiful sight of her, Ahern says. Surely she was one step away from death. But the sheep hadnt given up and neither would we. The sheep - named Posy by Ahern - was placed in a stretcher and carried to the sanctuarys rescue vehicle. When the rescue team offered Posy some hay on the drive back, Posy moved her head to have a nibble. At that moment, we knew we were in with a chance, says Ahern. Back at the sanctuary, Posy received urgent medical attention. The rescue team realized she had flystrike, a disease caused by blowflies laying eggs on a sheeps skin. When the eggs hatch into larvae, they feed on the sheeps tissue, causing inflammation, general systemic toxemia and, in the worst cases, death. ...

Preterm birth is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adulthood; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We therefore investigated the effect of preterm birth at ~0.9 of term after antenatal maternal betamethasone on insulin sensitivity, secretion and key determinants in adulthood, in a clinically relevant animal model. Glucose tolerance and insulin secretion (intravenous glucose tolerance test) and whole-body insulin sensitivity (hyperinsulinaemic euglycaemic clamp) were measured and tissue collected in young adult sheep (14 months old) after epostane-induced preterm (9M, 7F) or term delivery (11M, 6F). Glucose tolerance and disposition, insulin secretion, β-cell mass and insulin sensitivity did not differ between term and preterm sheep. Hepatic PRKAG2 expression was greater in preterm than in term males (P = 0.028), but did not differ between preterm and term females. In skeletal muscle, SLC2A4 (P = 0.019), PRKAA2 (P = 0.021) and PRKAG2 (P = 0.049) ...

Coopworth sheep, a newly available genotype, were compared with other genotypes in two trials to assess cumulative lamb and wool production and contributing components related to survival, reproduction and growth, and for the effects of ewe body weight on reproductive traits. In a third trial, various genotypes generated in the process of upgrading native Kaghani sheep, were evaluated for lamb and wool production. In the first two trials six ewe genotypes, generated by mating Coopworth (C), Polypay (P) and Suffolk (S) rams to Polypay and Coopworth-type ewes, were exposed to Hampshire rams for spring lambing from 1986 through 1990. Overall conception rate averaged 96% and ranged from 93% for S X C ewes to 97% for P X C ewes. Sire breeds were not different in ovulation rate but daughters of Polypay dams averaged .18 higher ovulation rate than daughters of Coopworth dams (P,.05). Uterine efficiency for twin ovulators was .86 with little variation among sire breeds; however, daughters of Polypay ...

The station currently occupies 157 hectares and has active research programs in field crops, pasture, horticulture, and sheep production. The environment is temperate, exhibiting four distinct seasons during the year. The average monthly high temperature occurs in July (27°C) and the average low monthly temperature occurs in January (-17°C). Average annual precipitation (rain or snow) is 76 cm and it occurs throughout the year with the greatest amount in August (106 mm) and the least amount in January (18 mm).. Sheep were added to ...
AN interesting feature which has emerged from attempts to hybridise domestic sheep (Ovis aries) and goats (Capra hircus) is the marked difference in conception rate according to the direction in which the cross is made. In goats inseminated with sheep semen the conception rate is similar to that in goats mated naturally with male goats; whereas in sheep inseminated with goat semen fertilisation is an infrequent occurrence1-3. The low fertilisation rate in sheep inseminated with goat semen has been confirmed by Hancock4 who found that only 5 of 93 (5.4%) sheep eggs were fertilised by goat spermatozoa.
CONNOQUENESSING TWP - The numbers all lined up for what was clearly a good start to the new year for sheep raisers Harold and Connie Dunn, 201 Whipporwill Road. Connie Dunn won the Grand Champion Fleece prize at the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show earlier this month. Her sheeps wool was praised for its color, luster and its crimp that allows the wool to mesh together. And as their daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren organized themselves to show their animals, the Dunns realized they had a contingent of 20 people exhibiting 20 sheep. And to cap it off, Connie Dunn was awarded her Grand Champion ribbon on Jan. 9, her birthday. The Dunns also captured Champion Merino Ram, Champion Merino Ewe, Reserve Champion Merino Ewe, Premier Merino Exhibitor and Premier Merino Breeder. This is an excerpt from a story that appeared in Wednesdays Butler Eagle. ...

AU - Thornburg, K. L.. AU - Giraud, G. D.. PY - 2010/8/1. Y1 - 2010/8/1. N2 - The fetal heart is highly sensitive to changes in mechanical load. We have previously demonstrated that increased cardiac load can stimulate cell cycle activity and maturation of immature cardiomyocytes, but the effects of reduced load are not known. Sixteen fetal sheep were given either continuous intravenous infusion of lactated Ringer solution (LR) or enalaprilat, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor beginning at 127 days gestational age. After 8 days, fetal arterial pressure in the enalaprilat-infused fetuses (23.8 ± 2.8 mmHg) was lower than that of control fetuses (47.5 ± 4.7 mmHg) (P , 0.0001). Although the body weights of the two groups of fetuses were similar, the heart weight-to-body weight ratios of the ...
The objective of present study was to investigate renal clearance, urinary excretion and underlying excretory mechanism of marbofloxacin in Lohi sheep. For this purpose, marbofloxacin was administered intravenously (IV) as single bolus dose (2.5 mg/kg body weight) to eight healthy sheep of Lohi breed. After start of experiment, blood and urine samples were drawn at predetermined time intervals and marbofloxacin concentrations in the samples were measured by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) using UV/Vis detector. The mean ± SD values of creatinine in plasma and urine were 15.37 ± 0.65 µg/ml and 246.7 ± 48.05 µg/ml, respectively. Glomerular filtration rate was 1.29 ± 0.22 ml/min/kg whereas urinary flow rate was observed to be 0.084 ± 0.016 ml/min/kg. The renal clearance of marbofloxacin in Lohi sheep was 9.45 ± 2.12 ml/min/kg. Cumulative percentage dose excreted was seen to be maximum at 24 h post drug administration. It was concluded that renal handling of
One of the greatest threats is the overutilisation of rangelands by domestic livestock, principally domestic sheep, goats, and cattle, which number in the thousands each in the Salt Range. Domestic ungulate ectoparasites and diseases can readily be transferred to Urials. [16]. Lungworms (Cystocaulus) are common parasites, as are roundworms such as Trichuris and Trichocephalus, The Punjab Urials can also be infected with coccidia (Eimeria).. The diet overlap between Urials and domestic sheep can be signifiant and can result in competition.. Overexploited rangelands can also negatively affect ram horn growth. In the Punjab, 74 per cent of the 23 plant genera consumed by Punjab Urial and domestic sheep were eaten by both. Domestic sheep are potential forage competitors. Diets of domestic sheep are also dominated by grasses, consisting of 72 per cent grasses, 13 per cent forbs, and 14 per cent browse on an annual basis. Although domestic goats are primarily browsers, they are also potential ...

The majority of sheep and goat milk produced in the world is transformed into cheese, therefore, feeding is a major factor affecting the quality of sheep and goat milk and, hence sheep and goat cheese quality. This discussion is an attempt to explore the influence of nutrition on milk yield and major milk components in sheep and goats. Nutrition is a vital component in an attempt to maximise milk synthesis in small ruminants, as a result correct feeding management is desirable through appropriate estimation of roughage to concentrate intake in order to optimize the utilization of feed supplements. It is suffice to suggest that feeding high producing dairy animals may be a major constraint in milk production, which implies greater attention to diet composition, feed quality, and the physical form of feedstuffs is required. The rate and extent to which a dairy sheep and goat is capable of drawing upon body reserves to meet the energy requirement at different stages of lactation is critical in ...
There are two huge sheep drives of about 4000 animals from Schnalstal (South Tyrol) to Ötztal (Tirol) and back to South Tyrol again. This blog focuses on the sheep drive on 10 June 2017, starting in Schnalstals village of Vernagt am See with approximately 2000 animals driven across Niederjoch saddle (3019 m) into Ötztal valley and Niedertal Alm near Vent. On 09 September this flock of sheep returns to their home stables in South Tyrol.. The second sheep drive takes place in Kurzras on 10 June, too. Some 1500 animals cross Hochjoch ridge (2770 m) towards Rofenberg Alm in Rofental near Vent. They return to Schnalstal on 10 September.. And there is a third sheep drive from South Tyrol to Tirols Ötztal valley where sheep from Passeiertal reach the pasturelands above Obergurgl after crossing Timmelsjoch Pass (2509 m).. This traditional transhumance dates back for more than 6000 years when the Alps original people drove their herds from the dry and arid grazing grounds of the South to the lush ...
If, hypothetically speaking, I were looking for some Merino sheep, where might I find some? Perfunctory googling suggests New Zealand. Or Vermont. Not exactly practical. I dont think Ive ever seen any, even at yarn shows (I cant be sure. Ive always been far more interested in the end product)
In early July, Faroe Islands citizens, fed up with Googles noncooperation, started attaching 360 cameras to some of their 70,000-odd sheep to map the islands themselves. On Wednesday, Google - sensing a PR win, no doubt - announced that it had quietly sent Street View rigs to the Faroe Islands (Denmarks version of Puerto Rico) to bolster its Sheep View.. There are 18 Faroe Islands and just under 50,000 citizens, but it looks like quite the tourism destination. Street View would enable foreigners to salivate and dream of a breathtakingly scenic vacation, and to explore the islands in virtual space before packing their bags and hopping on the next flight. But Google wasnt taking the bait, so Faroe Islands resident Durita Andreassen started attaching bulky, solar-powered camera rigs to intrepid sheep. Soon enough, she had Sheep View up and running, and the internet, as it tends to do, caught wind of it.. Now, Googles legitimized Sheep View, shared its own side of the story (replete with sheep ...
