Activity onsets of horn sharks, Heterodontus francisci, were studied in the natural environment at Santa Catalina Island, California. The mean of activity onsets of these nocturnal sharks occurred 76 min after sunset which corresponded to an approximate light level of 0.03 lux. During laboratory studies under a fixed LD 12:12 (12 hr light- 12 hr dark) regime, the L phase of which was 8 lux, H. francisci showed anticipation of the D phase. Under 23 days of constant dim light, H. francisci exhibited a drifting circadian rhythm with period lengths, for one individual, of 20.8 hr under 2.0 lux, and 23.0 hr under 0.13 lux. Under 15 days of constant darkness, the sharks showed a high level of aperiodic activity. During laboratory experimental dusk transitions, the light intensity eliciting onset of activity was: 1), proportional to the amount of time sharks spent in the L phase of the LD regime, and 2), independent of the level of Hght duiing the L phase of the LD regime.

Using DNA to discover shark populations and monitor the sources of fins in international trade The demand for fins and other shark products continues to drive the overfishing of shark species and populations worldwide. Even though the DNA forensic tools pioneered by the SOSSRC and Guy Harvey Research Institute can rapidly determine the species of shark from market-derived products, the geographic population divisions of most globally distributed sharks are poorly known, making it nearly impossible to determine even the general geographic area that traded shark products originated from. This means that some shark species and populations are perhaps being subjected to disproportionate and unsustainable levels of fishing without our knowledge. If this is the case, some shark populations may be eradicated before we realise it is happening.. The SOSSRC is addressing this issue for several fished shark species, in collaboration with researchers from around the world. Ongoing research shows that many ...
Molecular genetic techniques were used to elucidate genetic population structure in three species of sharks, the coastal sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) and Atlantic sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae), and the pelagic shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus). Allozyme analysis and analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were used to test the null hypothesis that the mid-Atlantic Bight and the Gulf of Mexico sandbar sharks consist of a single gene pool. RFLP analysis of mtDNA was used to determine the pattern and level of genetic divergence in the sandbar shark between the western North Atlantic and the Eastern Indian Ocean, and within the entire species range of the cosmopolitan shortfin mako and the Atlantic sharpnose shark. No significant genetic divergence was detected in the sandbar shark between the mid-Atlantic Bight and Gulf of Mexico. Genetic variation was extremely low but homogeneously distributed. A significant degree of genetic

The shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, is caught in the eastern North Atlantic as a regular bycatch of the surface-drift longline fishery, mainly directed towards swordfish, Xiphias gladius. Stomachs of 112 shortfin mako sharks, ranging in size from 64 cm to 290 cm fork length, showed teleosts to be the principal component of the diet, occurring in 87% of the stomachs and accounting for over 90% of the contents by weight. Crustaceans and cephalopods were also relatively important in this species diet, whereas other elasmobranchs were only present in lower percentages. Meal overlap was observed in half of the sampled sharks. No clear trend of prey size selectivity was found, despite smaller individuals seeming incapable of pursuing larger and faster prey. The retention of small prey was also observed in the diet of all sizes of shark. Seasonality in food habits was in accordance with the current availability of food items. The observed vacuity index of 12% is comparable to foraging ecology studies using

Scientists estimate that humans kill between 70 and 100 million sharks each year and many shark species are on the brink of extinction.** The General Nutrition Center (GNC) is a huge shark cartilage seller, marketing their shark products as a remedy for arthritis with anti-cancer properties. This misleading marketing helps drive the demand for shark products and incentivizes hunters to illegally kill sharks. Furthermore, there is no scientific evidence that shark cartilage promotes joint health or acts as a tumor suppressant.***. GNC, one of the largest health stores in North America can make a significant dent in the demand for shark products like cartilage. Although shark cartilage may be a popular supplement, the market for such products is unsustainable and continued sale of these products will lead to the further endangerment and threat of extinction of many shark species. ****. We strongly urge General Nutrition Center to remove shark cartilage products from its stores, and to explain to ...

Shark liver oil is an oil obtained from the livers of sharks. It has been used for centuries as a folk remedy to promote the healing of wounds and as a remedy for respiratory tract and digestive system problems. It is still promoted as a dietary supplement, and additional claims have been made that it can treat other maladies such as cancer, HIV, radiation illness, swine flu and the common cold. To date, none of these claims has been medically validated and shark liver oil (alone) is not a medication prescribed or utilized by American physicians. However, it is a component of some moisturizing skin lotions, and some hemorrhoid medications. Many fish maintain buoyancy with swim bladders. However sharks lack swim bladders, and maintain their buoyancy instead with large livers that are full of oil. This stored oil may also function as a nutrient when food is scarce. Deep sea sharks are usually targeted for their oil, because the livers of these species can account for up to 5-10% of their total ...

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a large lamnid shark and one of the oceans apex predators. Growing to lengths of over 6 meters and weights of up to 3 tons, it is a large, powerfully-built and streamlined shark with a body characteristic of a lamnid shark.
Shark cartilage is a dietary supplement made from the dried and powdered cartilage of a shark; that is, from the tough material that composes a sharks skeleton. Shark cartilage is marketed under a variety of brand names, including Carticin, Cartilade, or BeneFin, and is marketed explicitly or implicitly as a treatment or preventive for various illnesses, including cancer. There is no scientific evidence that shark cartilage is useful in treating or preventing cancer or other diseases. Controlled trials have shown no benefit to shark cartilage supplements, and shark cartilage contains potentially toxic compounds linked to Alzheimers disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, shark cartilage supplements are still marketed using the misconception that sharks do not get cancer, a myth that was as popularized by the 1992 book Sharks Dont Get Cancer. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission has taken legal action against such fraudulent promoters. Tumors of many kinds, some ...

The main conclusions to be drawn from recent studies are that dynamic muscle function varies longitudinally in many bony fishes and that different species exhibit various patterns of muscle activation and strain in order to optimize muscle function for their particular swimming behavior. Optimization of muscle function along the body may be correlated with differences in swimming mode (Wardle et al.,1995). Since the earliest research on muscle function in fish swimming, attention has been focused on bony fishes representing a wide range of swimming modes. However, sharks also display a broad spectrum of swimming modes, ranging from highly undulatory species (large lateral displacement over much of the body) such as the leopard shark, to more stiff-bodied, tuna-like species (lateral displacement restricted primarily to caudal region) such as the lamnid sharks, yet virtually nothing is known about dynamic muscle function in any shark species. To build a more complete picture of the evolution of ...

Researchers, writing in the Journal of Animal Ecology suggest that some shark species have mental maps of their ranges and can pinpoint locations in the ocean up to 30 miles away. Tagged with acoustic transmitters, scientists analyzed data from tiger sharks, and found that they took directed paths from place to place, AFP is reporting.. Using nine Blacktip reef sharks and 15 Threshers which had been tagged with trackers and released off Hawaii, Palmyra atoll in the Pacific or southern California, the sharks were then followed for between seven and 72 hours. The Blacktip reef sharks all swam apparently randomly within a narrow home range, while the Tiger and Thresher sharks travelled farther, and with an apparent clear sense of direction.. Sharks are long known for extraordinary hearing, motion sensing and smell. New research is showing some shark species can also navigate with pinpoint accuracy over long distances. Simply put, they know where they are going, said Yannis Papastamatiou of the ...
This thesis develops the first open population model for any shark species worldwide using the Cormack-Jolly-Seber (CJS) model. In conjunction with a tagging study, five auxiliary studies were conducted to investigate stock structure, post-release mortality, tag shedding, and tag-reporting rates. The results from each of the studies were used to correct for any violations of the models assumptions to provide the first unbiased estimates of survival and abundance for the raggedtooth shark (Carcharias taurus) in South Africa. The C. taurus population exhibited complex stock structuring, by size and sex. Competitive shore anglers fished an estimated 37, 820 fishing days.year⁻¹ (95% C.I. = 28, 281 - 47, 359 days.year⁻¹) for sharks, and caught 1764 (95% C.I. = 321 - 3207) C. taurus. Although released alive, post-release mortality ranged from 3.85% for young-of-the-year sharks to 18.46% for adult sharks. Between 1984 and 2004, a total of 3471 C. taurus were tagged. In all, 302-tagged sharks ...
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is an iconic and endangered species with a broad distribution spanning warm-temperate and tropical oceans. Effective conservation management of the species requires an understanding of the degree of genetic connectivity among populations, which is hampered by the need for sampling that involves invasive techniques. Here, the feasibility of minimally-invasive sampling was explored by isolating and sequencing whale shark DNA from a commensal or possibly parasitic copepod, Pandarus rhincodonicus that occurs on the skin of the host. We successfully recovered mitochondrial control region DNA sequences (~1,000 bp) of the host via DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction from whole copepod specimens. DNA sequences obtained from multiple copepods collected from the same shark exhibited 100% sequence similarity, suggesting a persistent association of copepods with individual hosts. Newly-generated mitochondrial haplotypes of whale shark hosts derived from the copepods were

The crash in shark numbers, caused largely by over-fishing, could have dire consequences for corals struggling to survive in a changing climate, researchers have said.. Sharks are top predators, playing a key role in marine ecosystems.. They did best in places where shark fishing was controlled, or where marine sanctuaries had been created.. Dr Mike Heithaus of Florida International University, US, said: At a time when corals are struggling to survive in a changing climate, losing reef sharks could have dire long-term consequences for entire reef systems.. The research, published in the journal Nature, and part of the Global FinPrint study, reveals widespread loss of reef sharks across much of the worlds tropical oceans.. Species such as grey reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and Caribbean reef sharks were often missing from reefs where they would historically have been found.. ...
Sharks are truly remarkable creatures. Their range from small enough to hold in your hand (Like the spined pygmy shark) to more than sixty feet long (or about the same size as a common school bus- like the whale shark). Some of the largest sharks are relatively harmless and eat only plankton (microscopic plants and animals), while others. Like the mako shark, may be smaller yet are vicious meat-eaters that swallow their prey whole.. Sharks are extremely interesting animals for another reason, too. Yep, no bones about em. Thats right, sharks have no bones; their skeletons are composed entirely of cartilage and teeth. Cartilage is a rubbery, flexible material that enables sharks to maneuver easily. Their teeth, on the other hand, are designed so their prey doesnt escape easily. Some sharks have as many as five rows of teeth! On occasion, when several sharks start attacking their food all at once, they engage in what is referred to as a feeding frenzy. When this happens, the sharks might even ...
Sharks play a vital role in the health of marine ecosystems, but the potential threat that sharks pose to humans is a reminder of our vulnerability when entering the ocean. Personal shark deterrents are being marketed as the solution to mitigate the threat that sharks pose. However, the effectiveness claims of many personal deterrents are based on our knowledge of shark sensory biology rather than robust testing of the devices themselves, as most have not been subjected to independent scientific studies. Therefore, there is a clear need for thorough testing of commercially available shark deterrents to provide the public with recommendations of their effectiveness. Using a modified stereo-camera system, we quantified behavioural interactions between white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) and a baited target in the presence of a commercially available, personal electric shark deterrent (Shark Shield Freedom7™). The stereo-camera system enabled an accurate assessment of the behavioural responses of C.
Southeast Asias voracious appetite for shark fin soup may be contributing to a dramatic drop in the number of reef sharks in Australias Great Barrier Reef, a marine scientist says.. Dr Sean Connolly and colleagues from James Cook University found a 10-fold decrease in shark numbers in areas where fishing is allowed after conducting the first shark census in the World Heritage listed area.. The study, published in the latest issue of the journal Current Biology, looked at two species of shark, the grey reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) and the whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus).. The sharks were observed across four fishing management zones, ranging from strict no-entry to open fishing.. We found [where fishing is strictly banned] shark numbers are 10 times higher than in zones where there is fishing, Connolly says.. We can see that the populations are severely depleted already but we also have projections that say that those declines are ongoing and quite rapid. The study sent ...

If the ocean is a sharks vast marine buffet, then humans are the brussels sprouts-were far from the favorite. But thats no consolation to a swimmer like Kori Robertson, who was attacked in early 2011 while wading in the ocean off the coast of Texas. A 12-foot shark took a bite of her thigh then quickly spat her out.. Sharing the worlds waterways with sharks means that occasionally we bump into one another-and the encounter doesnt always end well for us humans. But dont let that keep you from the water: shark attacks are very rare. Still, some beaches-for various reasons-attract more sharks than others.. To get some perspective and uncover the worst beaches for shark attacks, we culled data from news reports, the International Shark Attack File, and the Global Shark Attack File. Globally, there have been 447 fatal shark attacks and 2,320 nonfatal incidents since 1845. The number of reported shark attacks increased worldwide in 2010, with 79 attacks, up 25 percent from 61 the prior year, ...
Carcharodon Carcharias Population Biotic and Abiotic Factors Sharks are on top of the foot chain so they dont have many predators besides humans. Abiotic: Rocks, Sand, Sun, Water, Salt, Temperature. The male shark first bites the female shark in order to keep her in place while insemination. The female shark then grows an egg and her gestation period last for about 12 to 18 months. Only one baby is born at a time. Competition to Survive Great White Shark I chose to research the Great White Shark because I love marine biology and swam with the sharks this past year. They are extremely important to the food chain of the ocean and to our environment so losing them to distinction would be devastating. Some estimate that there is as few as 800 Great Whites left in the world and some estimate that there is up to 2600 Great Whites. There is no definite answer, but we do know that their numbers are decreasing dramatically across the globe. Biotic Factors: Fish, Turtles, Seaweed, Krill. What do Sharks ...
Changes in pericardial pressure, pericardial fluid volume, cardiac stroke volume and heart rate induced by swimming were monitored for Triakis semifasciata (Girard). Maximum pericardial pressure (Pmax, 0.07±0.03 kPa) in resting sharks was typically above ambient, whereas minimum pressure (Pmin, −0.08±0.03 kPa) was slightly subambient. During swimming, both Pmax (0.23±0.03 kPa) and Pmin (−0.02±0.03 kPa) became elevated, as did heart rate (51±2 to 55±2 beats min−1) and fractional cardiac stroke volume (0.49±0.03 to 0.65±0.04ml). After swimming, all variables fell, except fractional cardiac stroke volume. Estimates of total cardiac output from fractional cardiac stroke volume data during rest, exercise and recovery were 33.1, 56.2 and 60.4 ml kg 1 min 1, respectively. The occurrence of both elevated pericardial pressure and cardiac output during swimming argues against a primary role for pericardial-induced vis a fronte filling as the principal mechanism responsible for increasing ...
Sharks are misunderstood creatures that have developed a negative and exaggerated reputation as monsters and killers. Our aim is to change these false perceptions and introduce sharks as they are in reality - amazing, beautiful creatures. Sharks are apex predators and a natural barometer for the health of our oceans. They play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem by maintaining a balance in the food chain and directly affecting all other species. This keeps our oceans healthy and full of life, ultimately helping to support all life on earth. Between 70 and 100 million sharks are killed each year from overfishing and targeted shark finning. The demand for shark fin soup and other related products is responsible for the decline of many shark species around the world. Many sharks have already disappeared and face serious threats of extinction in our lifetime ...
In the context of Australian fisheries, the Blacktip Shark species complex, part of the family Carcharhinidae (whaler sharks), comprises three species: Carcharhinus tilstoni (Australian Blacktip Shark), C. limbatus (Common Blacktip Shark) and C. sorrah (Spottail Shark). Whereas C. tilstoni and C. sorrah are distributed within Australian and Indo-West Pacific waters, respectively, C. limbatus is globally distributed in tropical and warm temperate waters. In Australian waters, genetic studies have identified two biological stocks of C. tilstoni (a Western stock extending from the western Northern Territory into northern Western Australia, and an Eastern stock extending from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the east coast of Queensland and New South Wales), three biological stocks of C. limbatus (one across Western Australia and the Northern Territory, one in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and one on the east coast of Queensland and New South Wales) and a single biological stock of C. sorrah across northern ...
How many stars are in the universe? How many fish are in the sea? Can these things even be counted? Or does the answer approach infinity?. How about one specific type of fish, like the shark? Surely we could get an accurate count of just the sharks, right? Actually, probably not!. There happen to be so many different types of sharks that it would be impossible to count them all. There could be a billion or more sharks in all the oceans around the world.. Up until the 16th century, mariners called sharks sea dogs. Today, scientists believe there are more than 400 different species of sharks in the world.. The smallest of these - the dwarf lanternshark - is less than seven inches long. The largest - the whale shark - can grow as long as 60 feet, making it the largest fish in the world. (Remember: Whales are mammals, not fish!). Scientists believe that sharks are older than dinosaurs. The earliest known sharks existed more than 450 million years ago.. Unfortunately, it is rare to find complete ...
noaa.gov. Description: The massive Basking Shark is the worlds second largest fish. Only the Whale Shark is larger. The Basking Shark is mostly brown or gray above and whitish below. Its most striking characteristics are its gigantic mouth, and long, pointed snout. It can grow to a length of 33 feet, though most individuals range from 20-26 feet in length. The Basking Shark can weigh between 5-10 tons, though at least one individual caught in a fishing net weighed an estimated 19 tons. Basking Sharks are often observed with heavy scarring, probably from encounters with lampreys or other sharks. The Basking Sharks huge liver accounts for up to 25% of its body weight and is thought to aid in buoyancy regulation and energy storage. Like the Whale Shark, the Basking Shark is a slow swimmer and has thousands of teeth, only a small amount of which are useful. Despite its large size, the Basking Shark is harmless to humans. In fact, Basking Sharks will not even get out of the way of approaching ...

Material presented during last weeks AAAS meeting is beginning to shed light on shark behavior, and reveal ways to best protect the shark population. The research found that hammerhead and great white sharks inhabit fixed routes in the ocean, and gather at fixed spots around islands in the Eastern Pacific Ocean to mate and feed. The animals also move between a series of stepping stone sites off coastal islands between Mexico and Ecuador, as well as congregate around various undersea mountains. Electronic tagging of 150 great white sharks off the coast of central California revealed similar findings that showed the sharks gather in hotspots. Researchers have even named a site between Mexico and Hawaii the white shark caf© because of its large numbers of sharks. In a BBC News report, Salvador Jorgenson, a researcher at Stanford Universitys Hopkins Marine Station, said it was unclear why the sharks went there ...

This public service announcement was produced by The Bahamas National Trust (BNT), in collaboration with Pew Environment Group, in support of a grassroots petition to protect sharks in Bahamian waters. Sharks are in trouble globally, and there are few locations where healthy shark populations still exist. In The Bahamas, a 20 year-old ban on longline fishing gear has left its waters as one of the few places in the world with relatively healthy shark populations. This has paid off for the small island nation. According to The Bahamas Diving Association, diving tourism has contributed up to $800 million to the Bahamian economy since the longline ban. There are, however, no laws there that specifically protect sharks. Pew is currently working with The Bahamas National Trust to gain permanent protections in all of The Bahamas Exclusive Economic Zone, an area encompassing approximately 630,000 square kilometers of ocean. By establishing comprehensive protections for sharks, not only will sharks be ...
First, we applied Tajima relative rate test (RRT) on the sequence alignments of a dataset consisting of approximately 250 genes. Each gene-set was separately aligned and sites with gaps or unknown amino acids were excluded. Each comparison included two ingroups and one outgroup. For each such triplet, we concatenated all the aligned gene-sets that included all three species and performed the Tajima RRT using in-house perl scripts. The relative rates of evolution between coelacanth and other species (lungfish, human, mouse, chicken and dog) were evaluated using each of the three chondrichthyan species as outgroup (Leucoraja erinacea, Callorhinchus milii, Scyliorhinus canicula). Tajima RRT analysis shows that coelacanth is not only evolving significantly slower than any of the tetrapod species used but also more slowly than lungfish (p , 0.05; Supplementary Dataset 6). An only slightly different picture is revealed on the respective analysis between lungfish and tetrapods. Lungfish is evolving ...
A ghoulish mystery is playing out along the shores of San Francisco Bay, where at least 80 leopard sharks - docile spotted animals that dont eat people - have washed up dead in recent weeks.. Scientists suspect the sharks are being killed by a fatal brain infection linked to a fungus that may have been spread by the huge amounts of rain California received this year. The historic storms also reduced the bays salinity in ways that could have weakened the sharks, some researchers say.. Leopard sharks have been found dead on beaches in Foster City, Hayward, San Francisco, Berkeley and other locations. The die-off has probably killed as many as 1,000 since early March, experts say. The animals sink to the bottom of the bay when they die in the open water.. And the deaths show no signs of slowing down.. They appear to be stranding themselves, said Joshua Porter, a marine biologist with the East Bay Regional Park District. Park users have pushed them back in the water, but in all reality they are ...
This study collated and reviewed new information available on the biology of key shark species since the 2015 Pacific Shark Life History Expert Panel workshop, and then applied an integrative process to identify specific data gaps and uncertainties, and prioritise potential studies according to conservation contexts, species and fisheries status, and previously identified management needs. This process was designed to develop and prioritise a Long List of biological research studies that would address key information needs. Seven expert reviewers in shark and ray life history, movement and migration, and fisheries assessments in the WCPO were consulted to collect input on potential projects and to prioritize options and opportunities. The process and reviewers comments were used do revise and refine the Long List into a set of projects that would be practical, feasible, and have the greatest impact in reducing uncertainties and supporting the future management of sharks and rays in WCPO ...
The increasing acidification of ocean waters caused by rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels could rob sharks of their ability to sense the smell of food, a new study suggests.. Elevated carbon dioxide levels impaired the odor-tracking behavior of the smooth dogfish, a shark whose range includes the Atlantic Ocean off the eastern United States. Adult sharks significantly avoided squid odor after swimming in a pool of water treated with carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide concentrations tested are consistent with climate forecasts for midcentury and 2100. The study suggests that predator-prey interactions in nature could be influenced by elevated carbon dioxide concentrations of ocean waters.. The sharks tracking behavior and attacking behavior were significantly reduced, said Danielle Dixson, an assistant professor in the School of Biology at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Sharks are like swimming noses, so chemical cues are really important for them in terms of finding ...
Published 13 May 2020 From Brian Horton, West Launceston, Tasmania, Australia As reported, correlation and causation are very different beasts (25 April, p 32). An example was given, that ice cream sales are correlated with shark attacks rather than there being any causal link, such as ice cream attracting sharks. Having seen this correlation claimed many times, I suspect it is faulty.. Sharks most commonly attack surfers, who like beaches with big waves, often in remote locations. Ice cream sellers prefer family-friendly beaches that shelve gently and have small waves. I suspect that a critical examination of the data would show that ice cream sales near a beach are negatively correlated with shark attacks.. ...
How many of your friends have ever petted a six-foot nurse shark? asks an advertisement from a California-based shark diving company, one of hundreds that have sprung up in recent years from Australia to the Bahamas. For a fee, this firm and others will put you at the center of swirling schools of sharks ready to eat fish out of your hands. Most companies, however, have trained guides clad in bite-proof suits do the feeding while clients watch and get some close-up pictures. Some guides even use heavy chain-mail protective suits, much like Knights of the Round Table used to wear.. When it comes to rays, however, such protective measures arent necessary. In the Bahamas and elsewhere, divers can find themselves amidst a flock of hungry, flapping rays, eager to snatch squid treats from onlookers. Some guides even claim the rays look forward to human visitors and enjoy being petted and stroked.. Sometimes, however, shark diving requires people to huddle behind bars. When the quarry is Great ...
The hypothalamus is an important physiologic center of the vertebrate brain involved in the elaboration of individual and species survival responses. To better understand the ancestral organization of the alar hypothalamus we revisit previous data on ScOtp, ScDlx2/5, ScTbr1, ScNkx2.1 expression and Pax6 immunoreactivity jointly with new data on ScNeurog2, ScLhx9, ScLhx5, and ScNkx2.8 expression, in addition to immunoreactivity to serotonin (5-HT) and doublecortin (DCX) in the catshark Scyliorhinus canicula, a key species for this purpose since cartilaginous fishes are basal representatives of gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates). Our study revealed a complex genoarchitecture for the chondrichthyan alar hypothalamus. We identified terminal (rostral) and peduncular (caudal) subdivisions in the prosomeric paraventricular and subparaventricular areas (TPa/PPa and TSPa/PSPa, respectively) evidenced by the expression pattern of developmental genes like ScLhx5 (TPa) and immunoreactivity against Pax6 (PSPa) ...

Previously, the standard way to tag large sharks involved attaching an electronic tag to them, which would only last weeks or months, but with Prebbles method, we are able to get the information from skin tissue over a longer period of time (years), and they can provide information over a short time period before sampling. The results from the study tell us that we have to deal with sharks at each site separately, to ensure proper long-term management.. This data can also help us with providing new approaches to conservation in these areas of the Western Indian Ocean and the Arabian Gulf, where we can provide greater protection from threats such as becoming by-catch in fishing boats, and for increasing their stability, which in turn brings eco-tourism to the area.. The study Limited latitudinal ranging of juvenile whale sharks in the Western Indian Ocean suggests the existence of regional management units (DOI: 10.3354/meps12667) is published in Marine Ecology Progress Series.. ...
Thomas Peschak makes an eloquent visual case for the sublimity of sharks-and also for their conservation. He notes that the media still devotes far more attention to rare shark attacks than to the urgent need to protect them from human depredation, especially the shark fin trade. He might have noted that Peter Benchley, who became wealthy through the 1970s novel and film Jaws, regretted the fear he had sown and became a shark advocate. In the long run, though, Chinas removal of Mao Tse-Tungs ban on shark fin soup as bourgeois decadence in 1987 may have resulted in more shark slaughter than all the horror books, films, and news items together. Great conservation photography like Peschaks, one must hope, will have the power to change attitudes globally ...

Body scales (including those on the head) of S. canicula develop in an irregular, dispersed, scattered pattern, with the position of new scales probably controlled by their nearest neighbours (Reif 1985, pl. 26; M. Smith & R. Fraser 2007, personal observation). This non-regular, non-iterative arrangement is characteristic of chondrichthyan scale development (Reif 1985). Scyliorhinus caniculus lacks a single initiator scale at the posterior extremity of the tail, differing from Heterodontus in this feature (Johanson et al. 2007), but otherwise the regular iterative pattern is maintained. An iterative series implies regulated development of scale rows and data on Scshh expression illustrates one of the patterning genes used in this process, comparable to Shh patterning observed in zebrafish scales (Danio rerio; Sire & Akimenko 2004) and for sequential tooth pattern in the dentition of the trout (Onchorhyncus mykiss; Fraser et al. 2004). This regularity is plesiomorphic for chondrichthyans ...
The evolutionary transition of fins to limbs involved development of a new suite of distal skeletal structures, the digits. During tetrapod limb development, genes at the 5′ end of the HoxD cluster are expressed in two spatiotemporally distinct phases. In the first phase, Hoxd9-13 are activated sequentially and form nested domains along the anteroposterior axis of the limb. This initial phase patterns the limb from its proximal limit to the middle of the forearm. Later in development, a second wave of transcription results in 5′ HoxD gene expression along the distal end of the limb bud, which regulates formation of digits. Studies of zebrafish fins showed that the second phase of Hox expression does not occur, leading to the idea that the origin of digits was driven by addition of the distal Hox expression domain in the earliest tetrapods. Here we test this hypothesis by investigating Hoxd gene expression during paired fin development in the shark Scyliorhinus canicula, a member of the most basal

A shark that swam from New Zealand to Fiji has returned home for Christmas, rounding off an 11,300km odyssey and amazed the scientists who tracked her journey.. In May, Carol became the first mako shark in New Zealand waters to be tracked with a satellite spot tag, under a Niwa research project funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries and Nova-Southeastern University in Florida.. Scientists watched in amazement as she set off for the Pacific Islands, only to change her mind halfway and turn back for a two-month stay near Ninety Mile Beach.. After a loop around the top of the North Island, the shark again set off for Fiji, reaching her destination in September.. It was what she did next - returning to New Zealand and arriving home only 100km from the spot where she was tagged - that most surprised scientists.. In the space of seven months, the 1.8m shark clocked up more than 11,300km, covering up to 100km a day.. This month, she cruised around the East Cape and was tracked near Mahia a ...

Any of you have a loose tooth? A shark may lose up to 1,000 teeth a year, or 30,000 teeth in a lifetime! Shark teeth are constantly replaced as they wear or break. The inside of a sharks jaw has five to 15 rows of teeth that usually lie flat until the tooth in front of it falls out. When a tooth is lost, another rotates forward to replace it, usually within 24 to 48 hours. The process of tooth replacement in sharks is very similar to the movement of a conveyor belt or the steps on an escalator ...
This image was taken in French Polynesia, which happens to be one of my very favorite places to photograph sharks. Here, there are strong legal protections in place for sharks. Here, there are strong legal protections in place for sharks, allowing them to thrive and help balance the marine ecosystem. During this visit to Moorea, French Polynesia, I spent several evening in the shallows at sunset, hoping to capture something unique, she said.. Instead of focusing on split-level images as I often like to do, I decided to try something different. I envisioned and aimed to capture the sharks underwater with sunset seen through Snells window. It took many attempts, but on this one particular evening, the water was calm, the sunset was vibrant, and I got extremely lucky with the composition as well. Since many shark species are threatened with extinction throughout the world, it is my hope that images of these beautiful animals will help promote their conservation.. 3. A COUPLE with a passion for wildlife have a hobby thats not for the faint-hearted… freediving with sharks. Will Nace, 29, and his fiancée Summer Baumgardner, 23, regularly take to the water without protective equipment to dive amongst a wide variety of the species. Some of the sharks they regularly encounter include lemon, dusky and hammerheads with the occasional bull shark, which are considered one of the worlds most dangerous species of shark. The couple, who have a seven-month-old daughter, insist the pursuit isnt as dangerous as people think, claiming the public misunderstand these animals because of an unfair representation from TV and fictional films.
The evolutionary origin of the autopod involved a loss of the fin-fold and associated dermal skeleton with a concomitant elaboration of the distal endoskeleton to form a wrist and digits. Developmental studies, primarily from teleosts and amniotes, suggest a model for appendage evolution in which a delay in the AER-to-fin-fold conversion fuelled endoskeletal expansion by prolonging the function of AER-mediated regulatory networks. Here, we characterize aspects of paired fin development in the paddlefish Polyodon spathula (a non-teleost actinopterygian) and catshark Scyliorhinus canicula (chondrichthyan) to explore aspects of this model in a broader phylogenetic context. Our data demonstrate that in basal gnathostomes, the autopod marker HoxA13 co-localizes with the dermoskeleton component And1 to mark the position of the fin-fold, supporting recent work demonstrating a role for HoxA13 in zebrafish fin ray development. Additionally, we show that in paddlefish, the proximal fin and fin-fold ...
SUMMARY The critical O 2 tension of whole-animal O 2 consumption rate ( ), or P crit , is the water P O2 ( P w O 2 ) at which an animal transitions from an oxyregulator to an oxyconformer. Although P crit is a popular measure of hypoxia tolerance in fishes because it reflects the capacity for O 2 uptake from the environment at low P w O 2 , little is known about the interrelationships between P crit and blood O 2 transport characteristics and increased use of anaerobic metabolism during hypoxia exposure in fishes, especially elasmobranchs. We addressed this knowledge gap using progressive hypoxia exposures of two elasmobranch species with differing hypoxia tolerance. The P crit of the hypoxia-tolerant epaulette shark ( Hemiscyllium ocellatum , 5.10±0.37 kPa) was significantly lower than that of the comparatively hypoxia-sensitive shovelnose ray ( Aptychotrema rostrata , 7.23±0.40 kPa). Plasma [lactate] was elevated above normoxic values at around P crit in epaulette sharks, but increased ...

I have written before about the origins of shark fin soup, however it is worth re-capping slightly: The cartilage in the fins is usually shredded and used primarily to provide texture and thickening to shark fin soup, a traditional Chinese soup or broth dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The dish is considered a luxury item embodying notions of hospitality, status and good fortune.. The origin of the dish can be traced to the Emperor Taizu of the Northern Song, who reigned from 960-976. It is said that he established shark fin soup to showcase his power, wealth and generosity. The dishs popularity increased during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as a result of an admiral of the imperial navy; Zheng He, who commanded expeditionary voyages around Asia and East Africa from 1405-1433, bringing back fins that fishermen had discarded. From this point onwards shark fin soup became an established dish and by the time of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) was in high demand.. It is not surprising that ...

Background: Immunohistochemical studies of hearts from the lesser spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula (Chondrichthyes) revealed that the pan-myosin heavy chain (pan-MyHC) antibody MF20 homogeneously labels all the myocardium, while the pan-MyHC antibody A4.1025 labels the myocardium of the inflow (sinus venosus and atrium) but not the outflow (ventricle and conus arteriosus) cardiac segments, as opposed to other vertebrates. We hypothesized that the conventional pattern of cardiac MyHC isoform distribution present in most vertebrates, i.e. MYH6 in the inflow and MYH7 in the outflow segments, has evolved from a primitive pattern that persists in Chondrichthyes. In order to test this hypothesis, we conducted protein detection techniques to identify the MyHC isoforms expressed in adult dogfish cardiac segments and to assess the pan-MyHC antibodies reactivity against the cardiac segments of representative species from different vertebrate groups. Results: Western and slot blot results confirmed ...

Feels like an oil, acts like an oil, but its not an oil. Okay, then what is this emollient? It is chemically equivalent to other types of squalane derived from shark liver or olive, but created during an exclusive fermentation process from sugarcane. Peter Thomas Roths Oilless Oil 100% Purified Squalane claims to soften skin and help improve the look of fine lines, wrinkles, radiance and hydration. This column will review the ingredient listing for functionality and claims substantiation.. The ONLY ingredient in the product is squalane. The uniqueness of the product is based on the proprietary processing method of the sugarcane, yet there are no comparisons in the claims substantiation for squalane counterparts from olive or shark liver, the second of which is rarely used in the cosmetic industry today.. The claims are based on a three-week consumer perception study on 50 women ranging in age from 30 to 75 years old, concerning the appearance of their skin. It would have been interesting ...

ABSTRACT: Sightings of planktivorous elasmobranchs at their coastal aggregation sites are often linked to biological, environmental and temporal variables. Many large planktivorous elasmobranchs are also globally threatened species, so it is necessary to try and separate population trends from environmentally driven, short-term fluctuations. We investigated the influence of environmental variables on sightings of 3 species of planktivorous elasmobranchs off Praia do Tofo, Mozambique: the reef manta ray Manta alfredi, giant manta ray M. birostris and whale shark Rhincodon typus. We used 8- (2003 to 2011) and 6-yr (2005 to 2011) logbook data for manta rays and whale sharks, respectively, and constructed a generalised linear model with animal sightings as the response. Predictors included temporal (year, month, time of day), biological (plankton categories), oceanographic (water temperature, time from high tide, current direction and strength and wave height) and celestial (moon illumination) ...
A four-day international meet of experts on shark trade got under way at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute here on Wednesday with a call to address data gap in shark and ray fisheries across the globe. Experts recognised some progress but also many difficulties in assessing shark trade and maintenance of sustainability of this marine resource owing to shortage of proper data. The meet stressed the need for mapping and understanding of the full value chain of these species to secure sustainability of commercial fishery and markets, which would benefit both the stakeholders and the resources.. ...
Sharks are among the most threatened of marine species worldwide due to unsustainable overfishing. They are primarily killed for their fins alone, to fuel the growing demand for shark fin soup, which is an Asia delicacy. A new study by University of Miami (UM) scientists in the journal Marine Drugs has discovered high concentrations of BMAA in shark fins, a neurotoxin linked to neurodegenerative diseases in humans including Alzheimers and Lou Gehrig Disease (ALS). The study suggests that consumption of shark fin soup and cartilage pills may pose a significant health risk for degenerative brain diseases.. Shark fins are primarily derived through finning, a practice where by shark fins are removed at sea and the rest of the mutilated animal is thrown back in the water to die, said co-author Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, research assistant professor of Marine Affairs & Policy and director of the RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program (RJD) at UM. Estimates suggest that fins from as many as 70 million ...
