Having sex at early age, having multiple sexual partners, having sex while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and unprotected sexual behaviors are the common characteristics of risky sexual behavior which increases risk of individuals to sexuality and reproductive health problems. Risky sexual behavior is the most common problem in adolescents and young adults which may expose individuals for permanent social, economical, psychological and physical problem. So that this study focus on assessment of risk sexual behavior using institution based cross-sectional study design on 287 randomly selected subjects among Aksum University students. Almost 60% students reported to have ever had sexual activity. Of which 86 (83.5%) and 112 (64.4%) reported having inconsistent condom use and multiple sexual partners respectively. Even though more than half of first sexual intercourse (61.5%) starts due to their desire but still peer pressure and alcohol have significant effect. Similarly the study indicated that

Rather, these behaviors are clinically concerning behaviors. At times, the problematic sexual behaviors represent an isolated problem of a child who is otherwise functioning well. Other times, the sexual behaviors may be part of a pattern of disruptive or delinquent behaviors. Some children with problematic sexual behaviors have also experienced trauma, and the problematic sexual behaviors may be one of the symptoms related to the trauma. The following section provides guidance for diagnostic consideration, as well as more information about specific diagnoses: American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.. To our knowledge, this is the first study that links AFAI with HIV/STIs and higher risk sexual behaviour among gay men. Based on the sample in this study, the age at which men first have anal intercourse appears to be a strong marker for HIV. Those who reported being HIV positive were younger on average when they first had anal intercourse. Importantly, this association remains strong even after controlling for socio-demographic differences in AFAI, including mens age, education or whether they were victims of childhood sexual abuse. Studies linking HIV with sexual debut among Westerners are rare.20 However, our findings are consistent with those that show heterosexual men and women with the highest incidence of STIs tend to report early age of first intercourse.21 Just recently, a US study also reported links between age at sexual debut and some higher risk sexual behaviours among ethnic minority young men who have sex with men.22. One factor likely to contribute to this vulnerability is the ...
DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): Preventing youths high-risk sexual behaviors represent some of the most difficult and important challenges for social and behavioral scientists. This study will identify factors contributing to youths high-risk sexual behaviors and their disparities. The objectives involve testing a causal model of sexual behaviors guided by the theory of triadic influence (TTI; Flay & Petraitis, 1994), a model well-tested in predicting other adolescent risk behaviors that specifies the operation of key proximal factors as well as more distal factors. Consistent with TTI, proximal factors will include self-efficacy, attitudes, and social norms; distal factors include global positive expectancies, depressive symptoms, parental relatedness, and academic orientation. Finally, potentially vital socio-cultural influences will be tested as ultimate (most distal) factors in the model. Global expectancies and cultural orientation in Latinos are two important factors of emphasis in ...
Young men who have sex with men are substantially impacted by HIV/AIDS, and most new infections occur in serious romantic dyads. Young people experience substantial psychosocial and neurocognitive change between adolescence and emerging adulthood which impacts engagement in risk behaviors. We aimed to examine developmental change in the association between sexual partnership characteristics and condomless anal intercourse (CAI). Data were taken from an analytic sample of 114 young adult MSM from a longitudinal study of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth with 4-year follow-up. Rates of CAI were approximately 12 times higher in serious compared to casual partnerships, but this effect diminished in size over time. Partner age differences and violence were associated with more CAI, and these associations strengthened across development. Characteristics of serious relationships (e.g., power dynamics) were also examined. We discuss the need for HIV prevention strategies that address dyadic ...
Hi Emma,. Reading this, I get a strong sense that you expect to be judged for your age and your sexual choices. I have no intension of judging you, and Ill get back to why in a bit. First, though, I want to answer your questions.. Its okay that your boyfriend doesnt want oral sex. I know you want to give him that, and maybe youre also wanting to help him not feel embarrassed and bad about himself and not feel worried that youll judge or criticize his body, but its also okay--actually preferable--just to take him at his word that he doesnt want you to perform oral sex on him right now. You would want, I imagine, for him to take you at your word and not try to talk you into something you said you didnt want.. One of the most supportive things you can do, as someone who cares about your boyfriend, is to respect his decisions and express support for him. Since I cant talk to your boyfriend, I can only guess at what is making him feel shy, embarrassed and worried about his penis size. ...
The incidence of HIV and (sexually transmitted infections) STI continues to rise in the US among youth, and rates of HIV/STI sexual risk behaviors among adolescents with substance use disorders (SUD) are significantly higher compared with their counterparts without SUD. Yet HIV/STI sexual risk reduction is not regularly implemented within adolescent SUD treatment programs. To address this urgent public health priority, the investigators propose first to develop a manualized sexual risk reduction intervention that 1) builds community clinics capacity to help families in their care to address systematically adolescents sexuality; 2) promotes the youths safer sex practices; and 3) reduces HIV/STI sexual risk behaviors among adolescents with SUD in treatment. Second, the investigators propose to pilot test the manualized intervention to examine feasibility and acceptability of implementation in real-world settings and determine optimal research parameters for such settings in preparation for a ...

Premarital sexual behaviors are important issue for womens health. The present study was designed to develop and examine the psychometric properties of a scale in order to identify young women who are at greater risk of premarital sexual behavior. This was an exploratory mixed method investigation. Indeed, the study was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, qualitative methods (focus group discussion and individual interview) were applied to generate items and develop the questionnaire. In the second phase, psychometric properties (validity and reliability) of the questionnaire were assessed. In the first phase an item pool containing 53 statements related to premarital sexual behavior was generated. In the second phase item reduction was applied and the final version of the questionnaire containing 26 items was developed. The psychometric properties of this final version were assessed and the results showed that the instrument has a good structure, and reliability. The results from exploratory
Downloadable! The response of sexual behavior to HIV in Africa is an important input to predicting the path of the epidemic and to focusing prevention efforts. Existing estimates suggest limited behavioral response, but fail to take into account possible differences across individuals. A simple model of sexual behavior choice among forward-looking individuals implies that behavioral response should be larger for those with lower non-HIV mortality risks and those who are richer. I estimate behavioral response using a new instrumental variables strategy, instrumenting for HIV prevalence with distance to the origin of the virus. I find low response on average, consistent with existing literature, but larger responses for those who face lower non-HIV mortality and for those who are richer. I also show suggestive evidence, based on a very simple calibration, that the magnitude of behavioral response in Africa is of a similar order of magnitude to that among gay men in the United States, once differences in

Without clear alternative pathways for identifying youth with problematic sexual behavior and responding, law enforcement, prosecutors, and juvenile justice often are often unsure how to manage serious problematic sexual behavior of children. Children as young as six may face juvenile sex offense charges. Alternatively, in some communities, no response is provided when children with problematic sexual behavior are identified, leading to no treatment or safety plan being provided in cases when it is needed. Some communities have interagency teams who develop protocol to address triage, and include pathways to direct services with no legal involvement ...
Abstract. This study compared the correlates of HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) with newly diagnosed versus previously known HIV infection among 5,148 MSM recruited using modified snowball sampling in 5 Peruvian cities. Participants, if age ≥18 years and reporting sex with a male in the previous 12 months, underwent standardized computer-assisted risk assessments and HIV and syphilis testing. Overall, 420 (8.2 %) participants tested HIV seropositive, most of whom (89.8 %) were unaware of their HIV status. Compared to those who knew themselves to be HIV-infected, multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that unprotected anal intercourse at last encounter [AOR = 2.84 (95 % CI 1.09-7.40)] and having an alcohol use disorder (AUD) [AOR = 2.14 (95 % CI 1.01-5.54)] were independently associated with a newly diagnosed HIV infection. Being unaware of being HIV-infected was associated with high-risk sexual behaviors and AUDs, both of which are amenable to behavioral and ...

A Web-Based Resource for Evidence-based Decision-Making. Youth with problematic sexual behavior (PSB) can successfully respond to interventions that address the behavior problem and promote healthy development. Recidivism rates show that with appropriate and effective interventions, most youth can learn to make better choices and be contributing members of society.. Youth who engage in problematic sexual behaviors are a diverse group. Thus, no singular approach is likely to be successful in all cases. Effective methods to promote safety are those that employ case by case, decision-making strategies that tailor interventions to the youth, family, and circumstances. Many youth cam be treated effectively in outpatient, community-based programs while a smaller group will need a more structured, secure setting during treatment.. Decisions to promote safety and facilitate positive outcomes for youth are made daily by social service workers, school personnel, law enforcement and probation officers, ...

GST-L1 multiplex serology measures antibodies to many HPV types at high-throughput and low cost, and is increasingly being used in HPV seroepidemiology. Our results support the GST-L1 assay as a marker of cumulative HPV16/18 infection, but not of future immune protection. Direct comparison between the bead-based GST-L1 and VLP-ELISA suggested only modest correlation between these two tests designed to measure cumulative HPV infection, but much of the observed lack of agreement was explained by differences between the seropositivity cutoffs for each assay.. Seroprevalence of HPV is known to increase with lifetime number of sexual partners and with age among young women [37, 38]. We noted increasing odds of GST-L1 seropositivity with each, supporting GST-L1 as a marker of cumulative HPV infection. This is consistent with documented associations between GST-L1 seropositivity and ever/never sexual activity, age at sexual debut, and lifetime number of sexual partners [22, 31, 40]. VLP-ELISA is an ...

Sexual Behavior in the Human Female was originally published in 1953, five years after the male volume. The material presented in this book was derived from personal interviews with nearly 6,000 women and from studies in sexual anatomy, physiology, psychology, and endocrinology. The book presents data on the incidence and frequency with which women participate in various types of sexual activity. The authors show how factors such as age, decade of birth, and religious adherence are reflected in patterns of sexual behavior. Some measure of the social significance of the various types of sexual behavior is provided. The authors make comparisons of female and male sexual activities and investigate the factors which account for the similarities and differences between female and male patterns of behavior.

Doctors have warned men who perform oral sex on multiple partners that they have a higher risk of developing throat cancer.. A new study analysed behaviour and medical records of 13,089 people between the ages of 20 and 69, and found a link between oral sex and throat cancer. The study found that smokers performing oral sex on multiple partners are at risk of cancer caused by exposure to the human papilloma virus, also known as HPV.. According to the New York Post, only 0.7 percent of men will develop throat cancer. However, the virus that causes cancer is more common, as 8 out of 10 people are thought to be infected with HPV at some point.. There are hundreds of different types of HPV and, while most are harmless, around 12% can cause cancer. HPV16 causes most throat cancers, which appears at the back of the throat, base of the tongue or tonsils.. HPV-related throat cancers have tripled in British men and doubled in British women between 1995 and 2011, and its estimated that it will overtake ...

Objective: To evaluate the effects of prenatal and postnatal stress on the sexual behavior of rats. Methods: Thirty-two 2-month-old male Wistar rats were divided as follows: the EG Group (comprised of 10 rats whose mothers underwent gestational stress), the EO Group (11 rats subjected to postnatal stress), and the SE Group (control group, comprised of 11 animals that went through no stress whatsoever). Upon reaching adulthood, these male rates were introduced to females and had their sexual behavior assessed based on the number of mounts. Results: The animals from the EP Group showed significantly fewer mounts (74 ± 24.77, p < 0.05) when compared to those from the EG (108.9 ± 35.27) and SE (99.6 ± 20.76) Groups. Conclusion: The rats that underwent stress during the first days of life mated fewer times than those whose mothers were subjected to stress during pregnancy. The latter had their sexual behavior unaltered.

In the context of increasing HIV prevalence among women in regular sexual partnerships, this paper examines the relationship between male injecting drug users (IDUs) risky injecting practices and sexual risk behaviors with casual partners and inconsistent condom use with regular partners. Data were drawn from the behavioral tracking survey, conducted in 2009 with 1,712 male IDUs in two districts each of Manipur and Nagaland states, in north-east India. IDUs risky behaviors were determined using two measures: ever shared needles/syringes and engaged in unprotected sex with casual paid/unpaid female partners in the past 12 months. Inconsistent condom use with regular sexual partners (wife/girlfriend) in the past 12 months was assessed in terms of non-condom use in any sexual encounter. More than one-quarter of IDUs had shared needles/syringes, and 40% had a casual sexual partner. Among those who had casual sexual partners, 65% reported inconsistent condom use with such partners. IDUs who shared needles
Background Men who have sex with other men (MSM) are a vulnerable population in Africa that has been insufficiently explored. Given the high rate of bisexuality among MSM (73% in the past year), it is important to understand their risk-taking behaviors regarding both men and women. Methodology/Principal Findings A socio-behavioral survey was carried out in 2007 among 501 MSM recruited using the snowball sampling method. We explore in this article why a condom was not used during last sexual intercourse with a man and with a woman, taking into account the respondents characteristics, type of relationship and the context of the sexual act. In the survey, 489 men reported that they had had sexual intercourse at least once with another man during the previous year, and 358 with a man and with a woman. The main risk factors for not using a condom at last sexual intercourse with another man were having sex in a public place (aOR = 6.26 [95%CI: 2.71-14.46]), non-participation in an MSM prevention program
Background: Understanding ecological factors that influence risky sexual behavior of adolescents is vital in designing and implementing sexual risk reduction interventions in specific contexts. Interventions undertaken without understanding the critical factors may not produce the desired results. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the factors associated with adolescent risky sexual behavior among school adolescents in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done among randomly selected school adolescents in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Data were collected by an anonymous self administered questionnaire. Risky sexual behavior was assessed by asking question about sexual activity, consistent condom use and faithfulness to a single partner. Logistic regression analysis was done to identify factors related to sexual behavior using the ecological framework. Result: Overall 377(10.6%) of the 723 sexually active students were involved in risky sexual practices. Risky
TY - JOUR. T1 - Environmental factors in relation to unprotected sexual behavior among gay, bisexual, and other MSM. AU - Pollock, James A.. AU - Halkitis, Perry N.. PY - 2009/8. Y1 - 2009/8. N2 - This descriptive article illustrates the casual sexual behaviors of a diverse sample (N = 311) of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) regularly attending gyms in New York City. Approximately 88% of the sample noted sex with a casual partner in the previous 6 months. Participants reported the frequency of unprotected sexual acts, the perceived HIV status of their partners, and the contexts where they met their casual sex partners. The study findings suggest that the context in which MSM choose to meet casual sex partners has an effect on both the number of casual sex partners they meet and the number of casual sex partners with whom they engage in unprotected receptive anal intercourse and unprotected insertive anal intercourse. We found that the highest risk sexual behaviors took ...
Our primary objective was to assess the specific impact of paternal parenting processes on adolescent sexual behavior. Overall, we found a lack of research on the influence of fathers despite the well-documented importance of familial variables in shaping adolescent behavior.4,6 Critical paternal process variables apparent in the literature include paternal attitudes toward adolescent sexual activity, monitoring and discipline, paternal involvement in the life of their adolescent child, emotional qualities of the father-adolescent relationship, and father-adolescent communication about sex.. Our review suggests several plausible paternal mechanisms of import to adolescent sexual behavior and outcomes. The most consistent finding across reviewed studies, including those using both cross-sectional and intervention design, was the significant association between father-adolescent communication and adolescent sexual behaviors such as increased condom use and abstinence from sex.32,35 In general, ...
Background: South Africa is one of the countries with the highest Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevalence in the world. The main mode of transmission in South Africa is via heterosexual intercourse. Thus there is the need to identify factors associated with HIV high risk sexual behaviour to inform future intervention programmes. Objective: To determine the association between alcohol consumption and high risk sexual behaviour in South African adults in 2006. Methods: Secondary data analysis of cross sectional study involving 1544 adult males and females, between 16-65 years interviewed in the Soul City National Survey. A multi-stage, stratified and clustered probability sampling technique was used. Univariate and multivariate analysis was done using student t test, chi square test and logistic regression models. Results: The prevalence of alcohol consumption in the week prior to the survey was 24.4% (95%CI: 22.2-26.6). The prevalence of heavy episodic drinking in last one month was 17.5% ...
Young men in rural South Africa with early sexual debut exhibit a constellation of risk factors for HIV infection, and also later sexual risk.. Young men reporting sexual debut before age 15 were more likely not to use condoms at first sex, to have had multiple and casual partners, and to say they had not been ready and wanted to have sex. Young men with early sexual debut were 10 times more likely to have had multiple partners, even after controlling for duration of sexual activity, reinforcing evidence that early sexual experiences may determine sexual risk behaviours throughout the life course.9 Importantly, risk behaviours, once established, may be difficult to change.. Yet in-depth interpretation of these findings is difficult. Being in love and having been ready and wanted to have sex at that time are not mutually exclusive, nor is it clear how these are associated with other risk behaviours. Qualitative findings6,10 indicate reasons that young men initiate sexual activity: peer ...
Objective: This study examined gender, generational, cultural and social diversities in timing of sexual debut among Nigerian youths and determined factors influencing the timings. Methods: We extracted data of respondents aged 15-24 years from 2012 Nigeria nationally representative data. The outcome of interest was time at sexual debut while predictors included residence, marital status, zones, education, religion, age at first marriage. Data was censored, cox proportional hazard and generalized gamma models were used to model age at sexual debut with p=0.05. Results: The median survival time of sexual debut was 19 years, female youths were twice as likely to begin sexual activities than their male counterparts, HR=1.99, 1.87-2.11 while uneducated youths were more than twice likely to have earlier sexual debut than those with higher education, HR=2.19, 1.95-2.25. Likelihood of having had sexual debut was about 30% higher among those aged 20-24 years than those aged 15-19 years, HR=1.27, ...
Sexuality is a pivotal stage in adolescent development. Adolescents may engage in risky sexual behaviors (RSBs): early sexual initiation, multiple and non-monogamous relationships, contraception inconsistency, and greater age difference between partners. These youths are more likely to have negative outcomes later in life, like unplanned pregnancy, contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, and other issues. This project examines the relationship between various social and demographic factors and their implications on RSB with the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health data (N = 4135). Of the unmarried teenage sample, 37% of respondents engaged in at least one risky sexual behavior. Delinquency, substance use, friends substance use and sexual knowledge increase the odds of RSB. Parental support and involvement reduce the risk of RSB. Logistic regression found that African American boys and girls had higher rates of risky sexual behavior than their white counterparts, and ...
Abstract. HIV disproportionately affects African American men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. To inform this epidemiological pattern, we examined cross-sectional sexual behavior data in 509 African American MSM. Bivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the extent to which age, education, and sexual identity explain the likelihood of engaging in sex with a partner of a specific gender and the likelihood of engaging in unprotected sexual behaviors based on partner gender. Across all partner gender types, unprotected sexual behaviors were more likely to be reported by men with lower education. Younger, non-gay identified men were more likely to engage in unprotected sexual behaviors with transgender partners, while older, non-gay identified men were more likely to engage in unprotected sexual behaviors with women. African American MSM do not represent a monolithic group in their sexual behaviors, highlighting the need to target HIV prevention efforts to ...
Many school going adolescents still thought to face issues regarding risky sexual behaviours and this has been attributed to drug abuse they are exposed to through peer pressure while they are still young as well as exploring with their lives that is assumed to make them vulnerable to risky sexual behaviours. This research set out to examine the relationship between peer pressure, drug abuse and risky sexual behaviours among adolescents. A correlational study design that is quantitative and descriptive was adopted to establish the relationship between the variables. A total of 100 respondents, both male and female participated in the study. Data collected was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), where Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to test the significance of the hypotheses. The study revealed that there is no significant relationship between peer pressure and drug abuse among adolescents; the study also revealed that there is no significant relationship ...
We conducted a systematic review to assess the impact of school-based condom availability programs (CAPs) on condom acquisition, use and sexual behavior. We searched PubMed to identify English-language studies evaluating school-based CAPs that reported process (i.e. number of condoms distributed or used) and sexual behavior measures. We identified nine studies that met our inclusion criteria, with the majority conducted in the United States of America. We judged most studies to have medium risk of bias. Most studies showed that school-based CAPs increased the odds of students obtaining condoms (odds ratios (ORs) for individual studies ranged between 1.81 and 20.28), and reporting condom use (OR 1.36-3.2). Three studies showed that school-based CAPs positively influenced sexual behavior, while no studies reported increase in sexual activity. Findings suggest that school-based CAPs may be an effective strategy for improving condom coverage and promoting positive sexual behaviors.. ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Sexual behavior of male pigs. AU - Hemsworth, Paul Hamilton. AU - Tilbrook, Alan John. PY - 2007. Y1 - 2007. N2 - Two major characteristics of males that affect the likelihood of achieving copulation are the sexual motivation and mating competency of the male. The behavior of domestic animals, including their sexual behavior, is dependent upon a complex interaction between the organism s internal and external environment. In male pigs, as in other mammalian species, it is clear that testicular steroids are required to maintain sexual behavior and testosterone plays a critical role. Consistent with studies in other species, it is apparent in male pigs that there is a threshold circulating concentration of androgens and/or estrogens required to maintain sexual behavior and that the level of sexual motivation is unrelated to levels of sex steroids providing these are adequate for normal sexual behavior. Key aspects of the external environment that affect the sexual behavior of the ...
Homosexuality means attraction towards same gender and making sexual relation with her or him. In this reference, a man makes sexual relation with man and a woman make sexual relation with woman.
Background: There are considerable efforts towards reducing new HIV infections in key affected populations such as fishermen. Assessing changes in sexual behaviour and HIV prevalence is an important feedback to these prevention efforts. We evaluated changes in sexual behaviour and HIV prevalence among married fishermen in fish-landing beaches in Kisumu County, Kenya. Methods: We analyzed data from two surveys conducted in 2005/6 with 164, and 2011/2 with 545 married fishermen to evaluate changes in their sexual behaviour and HIV prevalence at two time points. The participating fishermen in both surveys were randomly sampled from all 33 fish-landing beaches in Kisumu County. The numbers sampled from each beach were proportional to the population size of the beaches. In both surveys, we collected data on socio-economic, sexual behaviour and HIV sero-status. Results: A higher proportion of fishermen in 2011/2 survey compared to 2005/6 survey reported drinking alcohol before sex with extra-marital ...

N2 - Background: To examine differences between lower and higher frequency alcohol users in sexual behaviors and psychosocial correlates of risk for HIV among young African-American females. Methods: Data were collected from sexually active African-American females aged 15-20 years, seeking services at a STD clinic in Atlanta, GA, to assess sexual behavior, correlates of risk, and a non-disease biological marker of unprotected vaginal sex. Results: Number of drinking occasions was significantly related to three of four psychosocial correlates and with all selfreporting sexual behavior measures. Also, heavier drinking per occasion was associated with the presence of semen in vaginal fluid. ...

We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 477,522 individuals, revealing five loci significantly associated with same-sex sexual behavior. In aggregate, all tested genetic variants accounted for 8 to 25% of variation in same-sex sexual behavior, only partially overlapped between males and females, and do not allow meaningful prediction of an individuals sexual behavior. Comparing these GWAS results with those for the proportion of same-sex to total number of sexual partners among nonheterosexuals suggests ...
The hepatitis C infection can only occur if the blood of an infected person is able to enter another persons body. It is the blood that is infectious, not the person. The virus cannot be transmitted by touching, kissing, hugging or by sharing cutlery. Am I sexually infectious?. The risk of sexual transmission is debated, but it is generally accepted as being very low - much lower than many other identified transmission routes for hepatitis C.. Choices about sexual behaviour are personal and some couples decide that such a low risk is acceptable and continue to have unprotected sex. Other couples, however, decide to use protection.. Unprotected sexual intercourse could be a risk but the likelihood of transmitting the virus without any blood contact is considered very small.. The risk of sexual transmission is increased if blood is present, if you have multiple sexual partners, or if you have other sexually transmitted infections.. In addition, the risk of sexual transmission is increased if the ...
KAP surveys have been proposed as a means to gather quantitative information on AIDS-related sexual behaviors, but the validity of survey results has not been tested. The validity of data gathered during a KAP survey in a rural district in Northern Uganda (N = 1486) was examined analyzing expected behavioral patterns, agreement of partner reports, and concordance of number of sexual contacts across gender. Patterns of sexual behavior and age trends are as expected. More men (50%) than women (18.5%) reported premarital sex. The likelihood of sexual intercourse before marriage increases with age at first marriage and with education. Women marry 5 years earlier than men, and the number of marriages increases with age. Peak incidence of casual sex occurs before age 25. The male/female ratio of casual sex is 4, as compared to about 3 in other African surveys. Single men are 2.5 times more likely to engage in casual sex than married males. Agreement of partner reports was examined for 392 couples ...
Gender power inequities are believed to play a key role in the HIV epidemic through their effects on womens power in sexual relationships. We hypothesized that lack of sexual power, measured with a four-point relationship control scale and by a womans experience of forced sex with her most recent partner, would decrease the likelihood of consistent condom use and increase the risk for HIV infection among sexually experienced, 15- to 24-year-old women in South Africa. While limited sexual power was not directly associated with HIV, it was associated with inconsistent condom use: women with low relationship control were 2.10 times more likely to use condoms inconsistently (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-3.78), and women experiencing forced sex were 5.77 times more likely to inconsistently use condoms (95% CI 1.86-17.91). Inconsistent condom use was, in turn, significantly associated with HIV infection (adjusted odds ratio 1.58, 95% CI 1.10-2.27).

Sexual risk behavior declined most dramatically among black youth over the 20-year study period. The gap in risk behavior between these students and their white counterparts has narrowed considerably. In 1991, black students were nearly two-thirds more likely to have had sexual intercourse and almost three times as likely to report having multiple partners, as compared to white students. By 2011, the disparity between black and white students who ever had sex was cut in half, and the difference in the likelihood of having multiple sex partners declined even more (58 percent).. While declines in risk behavior among black students generally persisted over the entire two decades analyzed, progress among youth overall was significant only through the early 2000s, and has stalled since that time. Since 2001, there has been no significant overall change in the proportion of U.S. high school students who reported ever having sex or who had multiple sex partners, and the percentage of sexually active ...
NEW YORK [January 18, 2007] - amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, has awarded nearly $1 million for eight new research grants and fellowships aimed at increasing understanding and prevention of rectal HIV transmission, Dr. Rowena Johnston, amfARs vice president of research announced today.. Twenty-five years after the first identification of AIDS, the taboos that surround an open discussion of sexual behavior are still haunting us in our efforts to contain this pandemic said Dr. Johnston. It is time for us to take an honest and unflinching look at how HIV is spread and how to minimize the risks. This new research should help us to further untangle this riddle.. Sexual transmission accounts for the majority of HIV infections both in the United States and around the world, but how much of that transmission is due to anal intercourse remains unclear.. Although not often acknowledged, many heterosexual couples engage in anal intercourse and may not be aware that they are placing themselves ...

In age-adjusted univariate analysis, women who had given birth to ≥1 child had a higher overall CMV seroprevalence (66.0%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 63.1-68.9%) compared to those who had not (49.0%; 95% CI: 44.4-53.7%) (p,0.001). Higher CMV seroprevalence was independently associated with increasing number of live births (adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR]=1.2, 95%CI=1.1-1.3, for each additional live birth), age at first sexual intercourse ,18 vs. ≥18 years (aOR=1.3, 95%CI=1.1-1.6), number of life time sexual partners ≥10 vs. ,10 (aOR=1.4, 95%CI=1.1-1.9), and herpes type II positivity (aOR=1.9, 95%CI=1.5-2.6) after controlling for age group, race/Hispanic origin, place of birth, poverty index ratio, and education level (p,0.05 ...
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a growing problem nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2009), there are approximately 19 million new STIs each year, and almost half are among young people ages 15 to 24. Untreated STIs are estimated to cause at least 24,000 women to become infertile each year (CDC). Students with low self-esteem, consumed more alcohol, had more sexual partners, and had more HIV risk-taking behaviors than other students (Gullette & Lyons, 2006). What is not clear from the literature is how psychological variables affect risk behaviors in a nationally representative sample. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between self-esteem, alcohol use, and sexual risk behaviors. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of data from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) database, which is a longitudinal study of a nationally representative sample of adolescents. The Add Health cohort has been ...
