Gender equality in couples and self-rated health : a survey study evaluating measurements of gender equality and its impact on...
Background: All over the world men and women show different health patterns, and therecan be many and various reasons for these differences. This thesis therefore evaluates theimpact of gender equality on health. To do this, we must be able to measure gender equality. In this thesis, we develop two new measurements of gender equality and evaluate the relationshipbetween gender equality and health.. Methods: Two cross-sectional studies, one register-based and one survey study, are used tocompare different measurements of gender equality and different measurements of health, and the relationship between them. Differences between men and women in relation to healthoutcome are also discussed in the thesis. The register study, comprising 1 097 202 individuals,is based on public registers and includes information on workplace, income, sickness absence,full-time/part-time work, level of education, parental leave and temporary parental leave.A gender equality measurement, the Organizational Gender Gap ...
Feminism and support for gender equality - new polarizing trends? - Institute for Social Research
Anti-feminism and anti-gender campaigns are central in alt-right mobilization in many countries. Current growing protest against feminism and gender equality opposes what for many years have appeared as an almost frictionless development towards increased gender equality.. We will explore how (an eventual) increasing polarization concerning feminism and gender equality is expressed in a - generally speaking - gender equality-friendly Norwegian public. We map the questions on gender equality support that have been included in surveys over time, and explore to what extent the selection and wording of questions affects the identification of tendencies of polarization on gender equality issues. These analyses will be the point of departure for an assessment of whether the tendencies we find express different views on what the current gender equality challenges are - and whether there is a challenge to address at all. Through our mapping and analyses, we aim to better understand whether gender ...
Women forestry professionals meaning making of gender and gender equality
In this paper we explore meaning makings of gender equality in forestry by drawing on a national survey of all women with an academic forestry education in Sweden. We analyse two open-ended questions concerning their experiences of being a woman in forestry and how gender equality in forestry could be improved. The aim is to investigate how these narratives construct norms and notions of gender equality in relation to forestry. We identify three dominant logics where gender equality is constructed: 1, in relation to women and concerning numerical representation. 2, as gendered power relations and organisational norms and culture. 3, as something distant from themself by emphasising that their position in the industry is motivated by competence rather than gender. While issues of gender equality has climbed the agenda of the men dominated Swedish forestry, little is known about how these initiatives are being received and understood among men and women working in forestry. On-going research on ...
Powerful dressing: Artfully challenging sexism in the academy by Linda Knight, Emily Gray et al.
#FEAS - Feminist Educators Against Sexism - is a feminist research collective that uses humour, performance and arts interventions to address sexism in the academic workplace. This chapter focuses on one particular #FEAS project: Power Dressing, a transdisciplinary feminist intervention that morphs photography, performance, textile art, personal narrative, and network-based collective activism to subvert the sexism entrenched in professional appearance and dressing. The Power Dressing project consists of a textile jacket that participants wear. Wearers are then invited to strike a pose of power however they interpret that word, and a photograph is taken of them in the pose. We curated the Power Dressing project because we see the negative impact that appearance politics has on women in the workplace. The Power Dressing project weaves transdisciplinary ideas, practices, strategies and methods together across politics, sociology, feminist theory, gender studies, photography, fashion design and

The Gender Equality Mainstreaming (GEM) Framework has two components:. The GEM Self-assessment: This assessment is composed of three surveys that allow companies to measure their own gender equality and inclusion performance across a series of environmental, social, and governance(ESG) criteria. After providing a gender score for each component of ESG, MEDA then offers a series of recommendations on ways that the business can mainstream gender within operations.. The GEM Framework: This comprehensive framework is presented as a manual and can be used by investors and capacity builders to assess gender equality and measure gender mainstreaming strategies within a business.. The six steps of the GEM Framework are:. Step 1: Identification: Determine whether a business is an appropriate candidate for GEM.. Step 2: Scoping assessment: Complete a high-level assessment of business performance in GEM and business practices and policies.. Step 3: Full assessment: Conduct an in-depth assessment of ...
A feminist post-structuralist analysis of an exemplar South African school history text
An analysis of the content of the text revealed that the overall gender representation in terms of the incidence of females (F1) and males (M1) is (#). (F1)0 (M1)5, and incidence of occupations and activities associated with females (F2) and males (M2) is (#) (F2)0 (M2) (D)40 (C)24. A denotative (D) analysis of the incidence of females (F) and males (M) in the text revealed that no reference was made to female characters, but that reference was made to five male characters. A denotative (D) analysis of the incidence of occupations and activities associated with females (F2) and males (M2) indicated that the activities associated with males only were centred. A connotative (C) analysis of the incidence of occupations and activities associated with females (F) and males (M) indicated invisibility in terms of females and emphasis on male attributes linked to masculine activity. An analysis of the structure of the text revealed that the overall gender representation in terms of narrative structure ...
Conference on gender, war and conflict reporting - War and Media Network
Call for paper submissions to a conference sponsored by the Norwegian UNESCO commission on gender relations in the area of conflict reporting. The conference will be held at the Department of journalism and media studies at Oslo and Akershus University College on the 6-7 October 2015.. The idea behind the conference is to draw attention to gender relations in war, peace and conflict reporting. The conference is a follow up of the project «Journalism under Pressure: A mapping of editorial policies and practices for journalists covering conflicts». This was a survey among more than 100 experienced journalists and editors in the field of war- and conflict reporting. The background for the project is the paradox that journalists in conflict areas never have had a better formal legal protection; and at the same time have never so many journalists been targeted and threatened doing their job as reporters. We need more knowledge of gender relation in the field of war and conflict reporting. To ...

Nuestra historia (EN) - FAD - Fathers Against Discrimination a.s.b.l.
The society has gone through significant changes in the last decades. The roles of a mother and father are no longer defined as they were in the 1950s. Yet, there are hundreds of children and parents in Luxembourg and thousands across Europe whose rights are violated every year. Children are being separated by Family Courts and told it is in their best interest not to have equal access to both mother and father.. Luxembourg government must find courage to set example for other members of the European community and put a stop to gender-parental discrimination in Luxembourg courts.. Gender-equality of chance is equally important to women and men but equality at work can only be reached if there is equality at home. Our organization promotes gender equality of chance in all aspects of the Luxembourg society. We support the rights of fathers and mothers to equal parenthood and successful professional career. We address the importance of family values promoting the positive impact a full and healthy ...
Video game culture - Wikipedia
In conjunction with the changing demographics of video game creators and players, issues related to women and video games, including sexism in video gaming and gender representation in video games, have received increased attention by academia, the media, the games industry and by gamers themselves. The Gamergate controversy of 2014, which involves issues of sexism, misogyny, and journalistic ethics, is an example of this. Benjamin Paaßen has argued that because video game culture has long been a space dominated by heterosexual men, the video game industry tends to cater to this particularly lucrative audience, producing video games that reflect the desires of the heterosexual male gaze. He further argues that this lack of representation of alternate identities in video games has caused gamers who divert from the dominant demographic are often relegated to the margins of the culture. This process is thus seen perpetuates the stereotypical image of the geeky, heterosexual male gamer as the ruler ...
Greens to fix glaring omissions in Abbott Governments workplace gender equality reporting requirements | Larissa Waters
The Australian Greens will work to save key parts of the workplace gender reporting requirements that the Abbott Government announced today it wants to cut. We are firmly opposed to the Abbott Governments changes that remove reporting on CEO salaries, perks, job applications and interviews, Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens spokesperson for women, said. The government needs to restore these important gender equality indicators before tabling this legislative instrument in the Senate, or it runs the risk of these changes being disallowed. Data on job applications and interviews is especially important at the manager level as it exposes where women are facing the glass ceiling. Just a fortnight ago the gender pay gap reporting data revealed that the gap is widest at management level - yet this is exactly the area that the Abbott Government is watering down the most. Without transparency on the gender equality of perks, CEO pay and who is getting interviewed for promotions or senior ...

Islamism and gender relations in the Muslim world as reflected in recent World Values Survey data in: Society and Economy...
Ever since Goldin (1995) proposed the idea that there is a U-shaped female labor force participation rate function in economic development, empirical research is stunned by the question why the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are characterized by such low rates of female labor force participation. This gap in labor economics research is all the more perplexing since gender equality, particularly in education and employment, significantly contributes to economic growth. The research strategy of this paper is within a relatively new tradition in labor market research, initiated by Besamusca et al. (2015), which does not exclude the religious factor and what the authors call gender ideology. Our analysis of the gender ideology of Islamism and gender values is based on an empirical analysis of World Values Survey data. In recent economic theory, Carvalho (2013) maintained that Muslim veiling is a strategy for integration, enabling women to take up outside economic ...
ECHIDNE OF THE SNAKES: 3/5/06 - 3/12/06
But still, to have a special day for the majority of this worlds citizens is insulting. It tells us that sexism is well and alive, that women are a subcategory of the human race and one which is not expected to demand very many special days. At the same time, it is equally insulting when this special day of ours comes and goes and hardly anybody bothers to even make a note of it. In recent years I have noticed that racism is still a BAD thing but sexism, well, not so much, and this is one of the reasons why we are in such deep shit in regard to reproductive rights and why our president can talk about sexism in Iran and remain mum on the topic of sexism in the United States. The politically correct use of sexism here is all about how unfair the world is to men and boys. If anything at all seems to be unfair to women and girls its caused by a) the immovable will of God, b) the unchangeable rules of nature or c) womens own desires to be trampled upon. Maybe thats why The International ...

But what about all this we hear how she has no support among the young, among young women? Surely, young women havent absorbed any messages about whos cool and whos old school? There certainly is a problem, but its not coming from Hillary. Its coming from having fifty, sixty, seventy years of your life yet to live, from just starting out, from being incapable of seeing what youre in for without being crushed. Its a survival instinct. Guidelines To Use In A Gender Equality In Education Essay Topic | Queen Street Treatment Clinic
Gender equality in education essay is required to present information and arguments which are in line with the equal participation of both genders in educational institutions. The termsex refers to the classification of human beings into two classes namely, female and male. There are instances when biological factors cause the birth of an anomaly like the existence of a sex chromosome disorder. Such instances might affect the development and behavioral patterns of the children affected by these kinds of anomalies. In situations like this, gender schooling or associations help such children and their guardians to attain their goals through educational facilities.. A gender perspective helps individuals recognize the existence of sex roles that influence the behaviour of individuals. By way of instance, there are certain stereotypical gender roles which were embedded in our social structure. The demand for this type of awareness and understanding arises when theres a failure to admit the ...

CRE finds 15 government departments failing in race equality - Personnel Today
To continue reading please register or login to your OHW+ account.. Whitehall departments are close to being subjected to enforcement action for failure to deliver on legal duties to ensure racial equality, according to the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE).. Under the Race Relations Amendment Act (2000), central government departments are required to assess new policies and legislation for their impact on race equality. After an investigation, the CRE - which can enforce compliance of the Act - found that 15 Whitehall departments had failed in their duty to put race equality at the heart of their service delivery.. Nick Johnson, CRE director of policy and public sector, said race equality should not be treated as an add-on, but put into the mainstream of all policies. The consequences of ignoring it can be dramatic - whole communities faced with unmanaged discrimination, he said. Who would believe that health, education and business policies, for example, would not have an impact on ...

Gender Bias Narratives in Medicine | Physicians Weekly
Where Do We Go Now?. The vulnerability and experiences women shared in response to Dr. Stieglers tweet demonstrate what its like to be a woman physician in 2019. While there may be less overt sexism now than in the past, women continue to be treated as second-class citizens. Women of color, transgender men and women, and members of the LGBTQIA community all face additional obstacles over and above those faced by white women.. As in other fields, there is growing recognition of the potential benefits of diversity for patient care. In recent years, several studies have suggested that women may provide better care for patients than do men. One study evaluated the outcomes of patients admitted to hospitals with common problems such as pneumonia or heart failure. Patients who were taken care of by women were less likely to require hospital readmission and were less likely to die within 30 days of their hospitalization. A similar study looked at the outcomes of patients operated on by men and women ...

Review of CoNZealand - The 78th World Science Fiction Convention [SteveDRice.net]
After the general technical issues that plagued the start of the convention things went quite smoothly with a number of excellent talks and lively discussion throughout on Discord particularly following on from the panels. The biggest thing I missed was the wandering around the dealers hall and the art gallery which really is next to impossible to recreate digitally (CoNZealand did create a VR version of the dealers hall but it was no where near as engaging and full of pictures and flat surfaces…). There was the controversy of Martins hosting at the Hugos which will likely effect conventions to come (Washington DC, who host the convention next year, have already indicated positive steps to avoid a repeat) and there was the continuing conversation about a more diverse racial and gender representation in the industry that pervaded many panels (perhaps to the point where the SF of the convention was pushed aside). At the end, I was talking with the chairs from next years convention where ...

The Myth of Misogyny - Quadrant Online
Womens historically unequal social status is systematically misunderstood by feminist theory. Status, womens status included, is best explained by reference to the pressing problems a society needs to solve to preserve itself and flourish. Simply put, those who are recognised to represent the solution to societys problems enjoy high status, while those who are dependent on the problem-solvers suffer lower status. This explanation completely sidesteps the commonplace feminist explanations in terms of sexism, misogyny, and so on. Social worlds are never ideal-but we have been trapped, by our own lack of imagination, into regarding them as therefore malign.. It is a cornerstone of feminist social theory that sex and gender relations in human society have been defined by the harmful effects of patriarchy, a system of male power. This system is intrinsically hostile to womens interests, and so oppression has been womens lot. Feminist social theory has thus understood relations between the sexes ...

I was going to say its the problem of crying wolf. But The Boy Who Cried Wolf is also a bad analogy. Its about a specific alarm that demands immediate action and a boy who outright lied when there was no cause for alarm at all (and as a consequence was not believed when the cause for that specific alarm was true). But sexism is not like a wolf. Theres no continuum of wolfism. There is only a wolf or no wolf. Sexism is a continuum, and some people - perhaps including McArdle - might like to say that it would be best only to use the important word sexism to refer to the obvious things about which there will be consensus, like that jaunty announcement that women just dont have the brains for politics ...

Feeling relatively poor increases support for women in the workplace - but men still dont want them making household decisions...
Feeling poor relative to others can spur families to support women in pursuing work outside the household and to invest more in girls schooling, according to our new study. But that does not mean women become more empowered.. In 2018, we conducted a survey experiment in Papua New Guinea to see how feeling economically left behind affects gender attitudes. We used a special type of survey technique to subtly alter respondents perception of their economic well-being in relation to other households. Half of the study participants were randomly primed to feel that they were at the bottom of a wide income distribution.. We then surveyed both women and men in both groups about their attitudes toward womens roles to assess the effects of our experiment on gender attitudes, specifically. We found that attitudes about womens proper roles are sensitive to perceptions of their relative poverty. When those surveyed felt relatively poor, they were more likely to support womens economic participation, ...
