Research Paper Title Gender-related differences in frontal-parietal modular segregation and altered effective connectivity in internet gaming disorder. Background Although previous studies have revealed gender-related differences in executive function in internet gaming disorder (IGD), neural mechanisms underlying these processes remain unclear, especially in terms of brain networks. Methods Resting-state fMRI data were collected from 78 subjects…
PMID: 30506014 Open Access MacMillan-Crow LA, Mayeux PR (2018) Intern Med Rev (Wash D C) Abstract: Given the inherent heterogeneity of the septic patient population and possible comorbid conditions, it is not surprising that the influence of gender on incidence and outcomes are still unclear. The goal of this study was to use a clinically relevant murine model of sepsis, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in CD1 mice, with and without uniphrectomy as a comorbid condition to investigate possible gender differences in renal mitochondrial function and dynamics. High resolution respirometry on fresh kidney biopsies was used to measure renal respiratory complex activities. At 18h post-CLP with nephrectomy male mice showed significant reductions in complex I, II, and III activities, while females were less effected; only complex I was significantly reduced from sham mice. Taken together, our studies revealed, for the first time, gender differences in mitochondrial respiratory activity even in the ...
In all industrialized countries, women outlive men at all ages, but women show much lower health indices than men of the same age, which is the so-called male-female-health-survival paradox. Research on sex differences in health and mortality has proliferated, yet there is still no full understanding of whether behavioral factors explain most of the gender gap or whether biological and social differences contribute more substantially to explaining sex differences in health and survival. The Max Planck Research group Gender Gaps in Health and Survival focuses on the question of whether gender-specific behavioral differences explain the differences in health and mortality between women and men. The researchers of the group investigate how universal the male-female-health-survival paradox across different countries and what is the role of biological, demographic, and social factors in driving the paradox is.. ...

To explore gender and intersectionality perspectives related to the pandemic, GLOBE organised a virtual roundtable on 26 January 2020. The two invited experts, Sarah Hawkes and Anna Triandafyllidou, took a special look at the impact of COVID-19 on people of all genders, analysing questions of health and migration.. The roundtable was introduced by GLOBE Fellow Andrea Bianculli (IBEI), who also moderated the event. First, Professor Hawkes presented the COVID-19 Sex-Disaggregated Data Tracker. This tool provides an overview of the worldwide data availability related to understanding and quantifying the pandemics gendered impact. It is spearheaded by the gender equity group Global Health 5050. Their findings show the various disproportionate effects that the virus can have on people depending on their sex and gender. Hawkes underlined the gaps in data availability, something governments around the world need to urgently address - not only in relation to the pandemic but to gendered health impacts ...

Background: Despite leading the world in tobacco control, smoking cessation remains a key health promotion focus in Australia. Characterising intention to quit by stages of change (SOC) can assist quit programmes.. Aim: To describe SOC and decisional balance (DB) by gender and identify factors likely to influence readiness to quit.. Methods: Cross-sectional study of Australians ≥40yrs; analysis restricted to current smokers. Smokers classified to three SOC: pre-contemplation (PC), contemplation (C) and preparation (P) to quit. Ability to balance positive (pro) and negative (con) consequences was measured using a DB scale. Body Mass Index calculated as weight/height2.. Results: 314 smokers (42% females), with 38% in PC, 38% C and 24% P stages; no significant gender differences. More con than pro attitudes present toward smoking especially in stages C and P [Fig 1] . ...

The association between patient sex and the tolerability of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) is increasingly being recognized. Several lines of evidence suggest that women are more likely than men to develop side effects to ARVs. On the other hand, it has been generally accepted that the efficacies of the ARVs are similar in both sexes. However, recent studies suggest that this may not always be the case. In addition to these observed sex-related differences in the effects of ARVs, there is growing evidence that the pharmacokinetic profile of some of these drugs may be different among male and female HIV infected patients.. The fact that female sex is a risk factor for enhanced antiretroviral effects (including toxicities) has an important implication, particularly from a global health perspective as women now represent the fastest growing segment of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Therefore, an understanding of the magnitude, clinical significance, and the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon deserves ...

So, the post title is clearly designed to pump up pageviews, but those of you who have come here hoping to see photos of me with dollar bills hanging out of my G-string are going to be sadly disappointed. The good news is the money youll save having your corneas scraped.. This post is actually about the evolution of sex, or recombination, as the biologists like to call it. The question is, why does sex exist? Or, at a genetic level, why would an organism do something that passes on only half of its genes (by mating with something that donates another half), rather than simply making a genetic copy of itself. This is often referred to as the two-fold cost of sex. Presumably, there must be an evolutionary benefit to sex that is great enough to overcome this two-fold cost.. As with everything in evolutionary biology, there are an enormous number of theories that have been proposed to explain the evolution of sex, but there are two major arguments. One is that sex allows beneficial mutations ...
Understanding the differences among drivers in different gender and age categories is crucial to preventing serious injuries, said researchers in a new study.
This is where I detect some contradictions. Arent we told that gender is just a biological designation, and it means nothing past your genitals and a few odds-and-ends on the inside? If thats the case, then how are people feeling like men or women? Im sure there are a few people who might be offended by my description above of what it means to feel like a women, but this is the same concept used by trans-gender people when explaining why they want to physically change into a different gender. Ive watched and read many interviews with trans-gender individuals, and Ive frequently heard some variation of while my friends were playing with tonka trucks I was playing with barbies ...

N2 - Sex differences in brain physiology and by inference various pathologies are generally recognized, however frequently ignored in epidemiological and experimental studies, leading to numerous data gaps. As a consequence, the mechanisms underlying sexual dimorphism of neurological diseases remain largely unknown. Several cellular and molecular pathways linked to the etiology and pathogenesis of various brain disorders have been recently described as sex-specific. Here, we review the evidence for sex differences in brain redox homeostasis, which is an important factor in brain physiology and disease. First, we focus on sex-specific differences in the healthy brain regarding popular redox ...
BACKGROUND: Sex-based differences in clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and outcomes of patients with acute chest pain are increasingly being recognized, but are not implemented in guidelines and clinical prediction tools. METHODS AND RESULTS: The HEART score was retrospectively assessed in 831 women and 1084 men presenting to the emergency department with acute chest pain, assigning patients to the low-, intermediate-, or high-risk category for the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) within 6 weeks. MACE, consisting of myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, and all-cause death, also included events during index visit. Six-week MACE rates were 2 times lower in women than men (10.0% versus 20.8%; P,0.01). Despite similar discriminatory ...
Purpose: We previously demonstrated sex-specific differences in corneal inflammatory reparative responses, which are mediated by estrogen modulation of protective lipid mediators derived from dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Sex-steroids have long been implicated in Dry Eye (DE) due to the prevalence of disease incidence in women. Sjogrens Syndrome causes DE by dysregulating immune responses in the lacrimal gland. A post hoc clinical study found a correlation between dietary ω-3 PUFA in women and decreased incidence of DE symptoms. ω-3 DHA is of interest to immune regulation as its metabolized into potent lipid mediators. We investigated whether lipid mediator pathways are present and functional in the lacrimal gland, if they exhibit sex-specific differences, and if a DHA-rich diet can confer protective actions against DE development. Methods: DE was induced using a model of desiccating stress and scopolamine. Mice were placed on a DHA-rich or DHA-deficient diet for 4 weeks before ...
We examined possible age- and gender-specific differences in the function and mass of left (LV) and right (RV) ventricles in 36 healthy volunteers using cine gradient-recalled echo magnetic resonance imaging. Subjects were divided into four groups (nine men and nine women in each): men aged under 45 years (32 +/- 7), women aged under 45 (27 +/- 6), men aged over 45 (59 +/- 8), and women aged over 45 (57 +/- 9). Functional analysis of cardiac volume and mass and of LV wall motion was performed by manual segmentation of the endocardial and epicardial borders of the end-diastolic and end-systolic frame; both absolute and normalized (per square meter body surface area) values were evaluated. With age there was a significant decrease in both absolute and normalized LV and RV chamber volumes (EDV, ESV), while LV and RV masses remained unchanged. Gender-specific differences were found in cardiac mass and volume (for men and women, respectively: LV mass, 155 +/- 18 and 110 +/- 16 g; LV EDV, 118 +/- 27 and 96 +/

Gender-specific association of functional prodynorphin 68 bp repeats with cannabis exposure in an African American cohort Vadim Yuferov,* Eduardo R Butelman,* Mary Jeanne Kreek Laboratory of the Biology of Addictive Diseases, The Rockefeller University, New York, NY, USA *These authors contributed equally to this work Background: Cannabis use disorders (CUDs) cause substantial neuropsychiatric morbidity and comorbidity. There is evidence for gender-based differences in CUDs, for instance, a greater prevalence in males than in females. The main active component of cannabis is delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9-THC), a partial agonist of the cannabinoid type 1 receptor. Preclinical studies show that genetic or pharmacological manipulation of the kappa opioid receptor/dynorphin system modulates the effects of delta 9-THC. Methods: In this case-control study of adult African Americans (n=476; 206 females, 270 males), we examined the association of the functional prodynorphin 68 bp (PDYN 68 bp)
In this population-based analysis, sex-based comparisons of potential risk factors for SCA identified 2 distinct clinical factors that were unique to women who experience SCA. Women were significantly less likely than men to have severe LV dysfunction as a precursor to SCA. In addition, there was a significantly lower likelihood of women having an established diagnosis of CAD before SCA. These findings coincided with trends toward higher prevalence of DM and hypertension in women. There were no significant sex differences in the mean body mass index or prevalence of obesity, dyslipidemia, history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/asthma, or LV hypertrophy. After correction for age, significant sex differences disappeared for the sex-specific QTc categories that account for underlying male-female differences in the QTc interval, but remained for QTc measured continuously. This may imply that when the underlying longer QTc in women is taken into account, QTc does not appear to differentiate ...
Although sex-related differences of cardiovascular outcomes exist (16), this may relate to a sex-specific clustering of risk factors (17). Yet, differential treatment patterns for cardiovascular disease in men and women may also contribute to differences in clinical outcome between the sexes (18-20). Statins comprise the cornerstone of our current antiatherosclerotic armamentarium, yielding widespread clinical benefits. A consistent under-representation of women in randomized clinical trials, however, has led to the publication of meta-analyses reporting conflicting results regarding the efficacy of statins in women (21,22). This inconsistency has created confusion and controversy among physicians, resulting in some openly questioning the merits of prescribing statins to women (5,23,24), despite clinical trials that enrolled both men and women reporting benefit (25).. This analysis reports the novel finding of sex-related differences of the serial response of coronary atheroma following 2 years ...
But in her presentation during the session, Eva Bossano Prescott, MD (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), said it has become clear that while more women than men die from heart disease, they typically do so at an older age-9 years later on average-and this creates a challenge for clinicians.. Additionally, women are more likely than men to have symptoms without having a stenosis, leading many physicians to not even think of treatment, she said. Women presenting with this pattern, often called syndrome X, tend to have higher levels of both depression and anxiety than women actually found to have a stenosis, Bossano Prescott continued. Because many women with syndrome X are not treated, their symptoms can continue for long periods of time and their quality of life suffers.. So counterintuitively, for some patients coming out of the cath lab without a stenosis is more bad news than good, at least with regard to symptoms, Bossano Prescott surmised.. Looking back, COURAGE taught us that its not ...

Relative to developed countries, there are far fewer women than men in parts of the developing world. Estimates suggest that more than 200 million women are demographically missing worldwide. To explain the global missing women phenomenon, research has mainly focused on excess female mortality in Asia.. However, as emphasized in our earlier research, at least 30 per cent of the missing women are missing from Africa. This paper employs a novel methodology to determine how the phenomenon of missing women is distributed across Africa. Moreover, it provides estimates of the extent of excess female mortality within different age groups and by disease category. The empirical results reiterate the importance of excess female mortality for women in Africa.. ...

This selected issue explores how gender influences not only patterns and levels of drug consumption in Europe but also how responses to drug problems are planned and implemented. This is an issue of acknowledged importance, with gender issues at the core of some of the key objectives of the EU drugs action plan 2005-2008, which highlights the importance of providing accessible and good-quality drug services (4). Concerns in this area are not new: over two decades ago, a first call was made to European policy-makers to pay more attention to gender-specific issues, with particular focus on womens needs (5), and this theme has been taken up in a plethora of research papers and articles. It is now accepted that understanding gender differences in drug-related behaviours is a critical requirement for developing effective responses (6). Ensuring equality of access to services and sensitivity to gender-specific issues within services are two of the key themes for developing high-quality care in this ...
There is a substantial amount of research on the difference in the use of the Internet between men and women, as well as their online behaviour, however there is knowledge lacking on what the role of the medium is in this story. Therefore, this paper provides a deeper understanding of the extent to which personalised search engines, like Google, influence a users search results and how this has an impact on users decision making. Furthermore, DuckDuckGo, which does not personalise search results has also been included in this study. This study takes a gender perspective, looking at two topics - jobs and political participation - that still experience a rather conservative division between men and women. An online survey has been conducted, using t-tests to analyse the results. This research contributes to the literature by providing in depth knowledge of one specific part of a persons electronic profile. The findings suggest that personalised search engines do provide one-sided views on a ...

Why are boys at risk? To address this question, I use the perspective of regulation theory to offer a model of the deeper psychoneurobiological mechanisms that underlie the vulnerability of the developing male. The central thesis of this work dictates that significant gender differences are seen between male and female social and emotional functions in the earliest stages of development, and that these result from not only differences in sex hormones and social experiences but also in rates of male and female brain maturation, specifically in the early developing right brain. I present interdisciplinary research which indicates that the stress-regulating circuits of the male brain mature more slowly than those of the female in the prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal critical periods, and that this differential structural maturation is reflected in normal gender differences in right-brain attachment functions. Due to this maturational delay, developing males also are more vulnerable over a longer ...
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are key actors of innate immunity that produce high levels of interferon (IFN)-alpha after activation of their Toll-Like Receptors (TLR) by pathogens. A difference between men and women has recently been shown in the level of IFN-alpha produced by pDCs after TLR activation. The production of IFN-alpha in response to TLR7 activation is higher in the presence of estrogens. This could be responsible for gender differences in the level of plasma HIV-1 RNA, that is lower in female as compared to male by about 50%, and for the sex-based differences in the susceptibility to HIV infection. Besides the role of estrogens, X-linked genetic factors could also be involved in the sex-dependent differences in the TLR7-mediated responses of pDCs. TLR7 gene is located on the X chromosome. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the TLR7 gene, c.32A,T, have been associated with accelerated disease progression in male HIV patients, and was found over represented in female HIV ...
When I was in AP English in high school we learned about the types of conflict in a story. There was man vs. man (duh), man vs. nature (yawn), and man vs. himself. You will understand just how literal-minded I can be in that I actually believed that man vs. woman was the great overlooked conflict in literary criticism. I wrote a paper to that end. It got a merciful B.. Likewise I didnt quite internalize that for every man vs. himself story there might also be a woman vs. herself narrative. Women, I figured, werent fool enough to run around for an entire book wrestling with themselves when there are dragons to be slain or fathers to avenge or murders to solve. Sexist, perhaps, but Im not the only one who thinks this way: I still have trouble naming a literary lady quite as frozen in her own mind as Hamlet was, though Ibsen and Tolstoy offer us some reasonable approximations.. But as I was writing my first (never shall see the light of day) book, this attitude started to present problems. The ...
Over the past two decades, we have learned a lot about how men and women respond differently to medications. This knowledge came after a concerted effort in the early 90s to increase the number of women in NIH-funded clinical research. Today, just over half of NIH-funded clinical research participants are women. Unfortunately, experimental design in cell and animal research has not always followed suit. Over-reliance on male animals and neglect of attention to the sex of cells used in research can lead to oversight of key sex-related differences. These differences should guide clinical studies, and ultimately, clinical practice. In 2014, the NIH began instituting a new policy that requires applicants to report their plans for the balance of male and female cells and animals in preclinical studies in all future grant applications, unless sex-specific inclusion is unwarranted. A commentary published in Nature by NIH Director Francis Collins, M.D., PH.D, and Director for Research on Womens ...

The major aim of this study was to identify the overall effect of losing the job upon different dimensions of well-being, and possible gender differences related to this influence. METHODS: A sample of 800 Romanian cancer patients was screened in 2014 (461 female and 338 male). RESULTS: Our results indicate that losing ones job after being diagnosed with cancer affects male more than female patients on the physical, emotional, and functional dimensions of well-being ...
Research indicates that after advanced age, the major risk factor for late-onset Alzheimers disease (AD) is female sex. Out of every three AD patients, two are females with postmenopausal women contributing to over 60% of all those affected. Sex- and gender-related differences in AD have been widely researched and several emerging lines of evidence point to different vulnerabilities that contribute to dementia risk. Among those being considered, it is becoming widely accepted that gonadal steroids contribute to the gender disparity in AD, as evidenced by the
In this large cohort of patients with diabetes seen in five academically affiliated primary care clinics, one-third of whom had diagnosed CHD, women were significantly less likely than men to receive recommended treatments for several major modifiable CHD risk factors and, when treated, were less likely to achieve recommended goals of therapy. Even though all of the patients received, on the whole, above-average quality of care by NCQA standards, women did not uniformly receive as good care as men in unadjusted analyses and after adjusting for differences in age, race, clinic site, and other variables. Among patients without CHD, women were less likely than men to be prescribed lipid-lowering medications and aspirin and were less likely to have HbA1c and LDL at goal levels. Among patients with CHD (and likely to reap the greatest benefits from treatment of CHD risk factors), women were less likely than men to be taking aspirin or to have their HbA1c, blood pressure, or lipids controlled to ...

Evaluating age and gender related change is important to determine the abnormality happening to the soft tissues, incisors display with increasing age and in different gender. When we are aware of the normal profile, soft tissue, and incisor display during smile then only we will be able to treat abnormal changes in smile and incisor display and bring back to its normal condition. The sample sizes of 90 subjects were selected from the Uttar Pradesh population between the age group of 15 and 45 years. They were divided into three age groups. Esthetics in orthodontics has been defined mainly in terms of profile enhancement, but if we ask a lay person or a patient, their answer will usually include something about creating beautiful smiles. The study concluded that the lip commissure height, both left and right followed the same pattern of the lip length where-in, they show an increase in length as the age increases. This was markedly seen in males than in their female counterparts and aging leads ...
In this follow-up study of the offspring of women participating in an RCT for the treatment of mild GDM, we observed no difference in the overall frequency of obesity or metabolic dysfunction at ages 5-10 years according to whether treatment was undertaken. We did, however, observe sex-specific differences according to treatment with respect to childhood blood glucose levels. Mild GDM treatment was associated with a decreased frequency of impaired fasting glucose, lower fasting glucose, and lower log HOMA-IR in female offspring at ages 5-10 years but not in male offspring.. This follow-up study represents the largest of its kind in offspring from a randomized treatment trial for mild GDM. The follow-up rate of 55% in those eligible from the original RCT was accomplished despite this being an unplanned study at the time we conducted the RCT. However, enrollment of 500 children fell short of our goal of 600 needed to observe at least a one-third reduction in childhood obesity with treatment with ...

Most usually the roles that one enacts are sex-linked. The term role is used to indicate that the behavior patterns exhibited are learned or acted as if according to some sort of social script (Gagnon and Simon 1973). Men and mens roles are typically associated with strength and dangerous occupations while woman and womens roles are more often associated with child rearing and nurturing pursuits. But even so, these distinctions are increasingly being blurred. What was seen as a mans job at one time came to be seen as a womans job and now anyones job today (e.g., telephone operator). Since these aspects of life are seen to vary in different cultures and to be changing at different rates the society and learning-bound nature of culture is acknowledged. Many of the cultural and social differences in behavior patterns associated with the two genders, man and woman, have came to be accepted and recognized as societal constructs -notions or abstractions which carry with them certain expectations ...

Many of us have gone to, seen a video, or at least heard of a gender reveal party/event. The most frequently asked question parents-to-be hear is Is it a girl or boy? or Do you know the gender yet? Everyone wants to know whether to get pink or blue presents.. There is just one small issue with these questions and with the gender reveal thing. We should be asking for the sex of the baby and it should be called a sex reveal. Some may be asking you, Arent they the same thing? The answer is no. Thats right, sex and gender are different.. Let us break this down. Sex refers to chromosomes, internal and external organs and other biological differences. Gender is a lot more complex.. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines gender as: Referring to the socially constructed characteristics of women and men, such as norms, roles, and relationships of and between groups of women and men. It varies from society to society and can be changed.. Gender can be further broken down into gender roles ...

The analysis also revealed that cancer death rates during the mention period for male children and adolescents aged 1-19 years were continually higher than for their female counterparts. During this period, the male-to-female rate ratios ranged from 1.1 to 1.3, and the rate ratio was 1.3 in 2014.. Going back to the finding regarding brain cancer, if we look at the years 1999 and 2014, more than one-half of all cancer deaths among children and adolescents aged 1-19 years were attributable to either leukemia or brain cancer. These two sites combined accounted for 53.4% of all cancer deaths to persons aged 1-19 years in 1999 and 54.8% in 2014.. Further, three out of 10 cancer deaths among children and adolescents aged 1-19 years in 1999 were due to leukemia (29.7 per cent), the most common site, whereas about one in four were due to brain cancer (23.7 per cent). By 2014, these percentages reversed and brain cancer was the most common site, accounting for 29.9 per cent of total cancer deaths.. Other ...

Note: Brevity is not my friend, so bear with me. This was kind of a response to Paloma Stainier on the Girl Group Poll (Btw, Sohee can never become a main vocalist, especially with Yenny around. It think that she has improved a bit so WG is trying to give her more lines, but her lives still are mediocre.) but I got a little crazy writing it and thought that it would be better to post it where more people can see (aka the boys page). Also, regardless of whether you do or dont agree with me, please bring up any insightful comments! I would love to hear your opinion, since this is just a basis for discussion. If I am completely off, I would love to know why! Plus, forgive any infraction I may have made towards the English language. Disclaimer: Any comment i have made about any group is neutral. No bias…at least I hope not.. I feel like comparing the visual roles in male groups with those in female groups under the same rules doesnt make sense. In male groups, the visual does not make the ...
There is a striking and statistically significant difference in how women and men are treated following a heart attack. These gender differences are reflected in the rate of risk factor control, which was lower in women, and in the rate of hospital readmission for a further heart attack, which was higher in women than in men.
Background: Physical inactivity is often reported in youth and differs among boys and girls. The aim of this study is to assess sex/gender considerations in intervention studies promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior in youth using a sex/gender checklist. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in August 2018 to identify all relevant controlled trials. Studies screened must have reported a quantified measure of physical activity and/or sedentary behavior, and identified participants by sex/gender at baseline. For evaluation of the sex/gender consideration, the authors used a sex/gender checklist developed by expert consensus. Results: The authors reviewed sex/gender considerations in all aspects of intervention development, implementation, and evaluation in 217 studies. Sex/gender aspects were only rudimentarily taken into account, most frequently during statistical analyses, such as stratification or interaction analysis. Conclusions: Sex/gender effects are not ...
