Louisville, KY 40292. MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?. Response: In 2010, our team at the University of Louisville with colleagues from Spalding University, were awarded a Tier 2 grant from the Office of Adolescent Health to study innovative teen pregnancy prevention interventions. We assembled a fantastic team of staff, students, community members and twenty three community based organizations to work together collaboratively to recruit and retain close to 1450 youth from the most distressed areas of our metropolitan area in order to conduct a randomized controlled trial.. We tested the efficacy of two interventions compared to a control condition. Our reason for this was to see how a new type of teen pregnancy intervention would perform compared to a more typical comprehensive sex education program, Reducing the Risk, which was already on the OAH list of evidence based interventions as well as to a control condition, which focused on community building but had no ...
Teens who take virginity pledges are just as likely to have sex as those who do not, and they are less likely to use condoms or other forms of contraception when they become sexually active, according to an analysis in the January 2009 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Pediatrics. Because virginity pledge programs do not reduce the number of young people becoming sexually active, the number of pledgers they enlist should not be used to measure the effectiveness of abstinence-only sex education programs, the study concludes.
TY - JOUR. T1 - Teachers professional identities in the context of school-based sexuality education in Uganda-a qualitative study. AU - de Haas, Billie. AU - Hutter, Inge. PY - 2020/12. Y1 - 2020/12. N2 - School-based sexuality education makes teachers important gatekeepers of students access to information about sexual and reproductive health and rights. The school setting has the potential to reach large numbers of students. However, teachers professional identities may go beyond, differ from or even conflict with the qualities required of sexuality educators. To gain a better understanding of the role of professional identity in the delivery of school-based sexuality education, this study used cultural schema theory to study teachers professional identities, and how these motivate them to provide sexuality education. In-depth interviews were conducted with 40 sexuality education teachers at secondary schools in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Sexuality education lessons were observed to ...
Reproductive health is a part of a comprehensive definition of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Sex education is an important aspect of public health. Ignorance, due to the lack of sex education leads to risky sexual behaviors. The data were collected by face-to-face interviews and an anonymous electronic questionnaire. The study group involved 20,002 respondents. Most of the women were of reproductive age (mean 27.7), parous (60.8%), of higher education (71%) and living in large cities (| 500 k citizens, 36.8%). 62.2% of the women gave correct answers to at least 5 of 7 questions concerning the physiology of the menstrual cycle. The state of sex education for students with developmental disabilities is a story idea that's been on my plate for ages, and I now may have a good hook: Researchers in Philadelphia have tracked rates of treatment of sexually transmitted infections among more than 50,000 Medicaid*-eligible 12- to 17-year-olds, including about 8,000 receiving special education services, in the Philadelphia school district. In Philadelphia, unlike in many districts, students who are gifted are also provided with an individualized education program, and thus were included in this count. The study found: For males, being classified as [learning disabled] was associated with a...
On the surface, HB2035 is just an attempt to limit access to sex education. It kicks every child in Arizona out of sex education without written permission, and bans teaching sex education at all before 5th grade.. Under the surface, HB2035 is even worse.. HB2035 is yet another attempt to re-institute no promo homo policies in schools, on par with SB1456 vetoed by the Governor last month. Its coded language would result in teachers being banned from discussing sexuality in any course other than sex education unless parents opt in.. This means that discussing the very existence of LGBTQ+ people in social studies, literature, and more would require a permission slip. This type of policy is meant to intimidate minority students and staff, and roll back progress AZ has made to reduce bullying and suicide among impacted groups.. Committee chairwoman Nancy Barto (R-15) said she consulted with stakeholders groups on HB2035, but only met with groups who supported HB2035 - and sprung a surprise ...

In some form, sexuality education has been part of the curriculum in U.S. public schools for many years. A 1988 survey of public school teachers in grades 7-12 found that 93% worked in schools offering sexuality education.1 Among women aged 18-19 in 1995, 96% had received some formal sexuality education instruction.2 The term sexuality education, however, can span a broad
May 14, 2008-Led by Chairman Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), on April 23 the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held the first oversight hearing on the effectiveness of federally funded abstinence-only-until-marriage programs.. Three panels of witnesses testified on the ineffectiveness of the programs, including leading medical and sexual health experts. Representatives from other organizations also submitted written testimony to the committee, including amfAR CEO Kevin Frost.. Abstinence-only programs are a cornerstone of the federal governments teen pregnancy prevention and HIV prevention strategies. Since 1982, more than $1.5 billion in federal funds has been spent on these programs, which prohibit discussions of contraceptives, including condoms, except in the context of failure rates.. But mounting scientific evidence over the course of the past several years has shown that abstinence-only programs have no positive effect on the sexual behavior of youth. Instead, research reveals ...
In the light of its general comment No. 4 on adolescent health and development, the Committee reiterates its recommendation and urges the State party to: (a) Take urgent measures to reduce maternal deaths relating to teenage abortions and ensure by law and in practice that the views of the child are always listened to and respected in abortion decisions; (b) Adopt a comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education policy for adolescents, including sex education, inter alia making health education part of the school curriculum, and improve knowledge of and the availability of reproductive health-care services with a view to reducing teenage pregnancies and preventing HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections; (c) Provide accessible, age-appropriate and adolescent-friendly health information and services for boys and girls, including confidential services, relating to sexual and reproductive health, with a focus on preventing pregnancy and making modern contraceptives available; (d) ...

Ishrat Naher Erina is a pharmacist and health science practitioner from Bangladesh. She has started her early career in the extensive research on sex education, reproductive organs, infertility management, and mental health at a foreign research firm. Currently, she has been running a non-profit pilot project, Prescription Bangladesh, to promote sex education in order to provide young minds with the facts of reproductive health and associated topics, including relationships, and at the same time to encourage a responsible and sensible attitude to these issues. She believes that sex education is an integral part of the lifelong learning process, and should be begun in early childhood and continue into adult life in order to encourage personal and social development and foster self-esteem, self-awareness, a sense of moral responsibility, and the confidence and ability to resist abuse, social taboos and unwanted experience with a view to ensure a good and secured mental health condition. In 1975, the first modern definition of sexual health appeared in an official document of the World Health Organization (WHO), which also made some recommendations for its protection (2). Since then, several additional definitions have been provided by the WHO and other sources (3), and there is now general agreement that the promotion of sexual health should be considered a priority in every country. This insight has been growing for many reasons, but one of the most important is the current AIDS pandemic which threatens the economic and political stability in several regions of the world. Since, so far, there is neither a vaccine nor a cure for AIDS, global sexual health education is the only promising option left. On the present occasion, I do not want to go into the details of sexual health definitions, WHO recommendations or suggested AIDS prevention measures. Instead of talking about problems, I would like to call your attention to possible solutions, i.e. to the enormous potential of the ...

By Carol Church, Writer, Family Album. Reviewed by Kate Fogarty, PhD, Department of Family, Youth, and Community Sciences, University of Florida. This post is honor of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.. Parents often find it uncomfortable to think about their teenagers dating or possibly becoming sexually active. Fortunately, research shows that communication and education can help teens make responsible choices.. However, theres no denying that irresponsible sexual behavior and teenage pregnancy are still major problems in the US. In recent years, US policy has often been focused on promoting and funding abstinence-only sex education-but some question its efficacy.. Data on Abstinence-Only vs. More Comprehensive Programs. With this in mind, researchers writing in the journal PLOS ONE recently compared teen pregnancy and teen birth rates in states where school sex ed is abstinence-only to rates in states where sex ed programs also include information on contraceptive use and STD prevention. ...

Nearly all of the abstinence-only programs reviewed in the literature share many of these characteristics. In particular, abstinence-only programs focus attention on a small number of behavioral goals--that is, reducing teenage sexual activity, include basic information on the risks of sexual activity, and target young, pre-teen students. However, only a few were sufficiently long and intense, lasting at least three months and requiring more than one hour of time per week. However, several abstinence-only programs that meet most of the criteria, especially those that are sufficiently long and intensive, have currently not been fully evaluated. (Best Friends meets more of the criteria for success than any other abstinence-only program). At this point in time, most evaluations of abstinence-only programs have themselves been short in duration and they have been of programs that were of relatively short duration and intensity. Should we care about whether abstinence programs work? Yes, absolutely. ...
The CDC reports that over 76,000 youth are living with HIV and 60 percent dont even realize it.. Medical experts believe the reason why HIV rates are as high as they are among Latino/a youth have to do with a variety of reasons unique to Latinos: cultural stigma, traditional attitudes of machismo, which stresses virility for Hispanics/Latino men, and marianismo, which demands purity from Latina women; immigration status, fear of discrimination - and perhaps the biggest reason, lack of education.. Though some school districts across the country resist teaching medically accurate sexual education and most prefer to advocate for an abstinence-only approach, the numbers show that Latino youth continue to engage in sex - on their own terms.. However, they do want to know how to protect themselves. The CDC reports that 50 percent of Millennials want more information about HIV. One method to educate youth about HIV/AIDS is via the annual bilingual Lets Stop HIV Together/Actúa contra el SIDA ...

Parenting. As parents we provide sex education for our children. Each mother and father teaches his children about sex through attitudes, behavior and verbal comments. Sex education is a lifelong process. Children get their first feelings about sex from their parents who are the most important people in the childs life.. What are your feelings about sexuality? Is sex a topic for scorn and dirty jokes? Is sex a topic to be avoided altogether? Is sex so secret or private or frightening that you cant talk about it? Some adults feel this way. Then they convey to their children the feeling that sex is bad and these children are unaware that human sexuality is a normal part of human personality and can provide some of lifes most enriching experiences. Powerful sexual feelings cannot be ignored. Even if parents refuse to relate information about sex, children listen to the stories of friends or read in wonder the comments about movies or news items or covers of books and magazines.. By Birdie McNeill. Wouldnt it be great if sex education helped students feel comfortable and informed when they (eventually) pursued healthy, sexual relationships? Unfortunately, sex education in the US often does the opposite, ignoring the most essential safety information and promoting a sense of shame around body, gender, and sexuality using scare tactics.. On the last day, the teacher dimmed the lights and had us write out a letter explaining to our friends and family that we had just been given the news that we had AIDS, and explained how we had contracted it. After an hour of people crying in class and thinking about death, she tried to encourage us to keep that letter with us.. The above story represents one of many ways students are taught to feel fear and shame in response to their own sexual impulses, a form of body oppression that is rarely included in body politics. Here are five ways that todays sex ed programs impinge students emerging sexual freedom.. 1. It Places a Premium ...

Female reproductive system is essential for sustaining human race. Moreover, many women feel motherhood makes her complete. Being better informed on female reproductive health will help in understanding the care that is needed for a woman.
Thankfully, there are better options for women (Catholic or not) that do not include pumping hormones into our bodies, killing our offspring or inserting torturous-looking devices into our nether regions. These options are the various natural planning methods (NFP): Billings, Creighton, Sympto Thermal Method (STM) and Marquette to name a few. Hormonal contraception manipulates the uterine environment to avoid pregnancy. This fact alone proves that there is science behind what makesa woman fertile or not. The various NFP methods involve tracking certain fertility measures (mucus consistency, cervix location, waking body temperature for example). Look at that. This is not the Rhythm Method! No moon or hocus pocus mentioned. Scientific evidence exists to help a woman not only know her body better, but to avoid pregnancy or conceive successfully. The best part about this option, is that once you have the instruction, the costs are minimal. Depending on which method works best for you, you are ...
