Gender inequality doesnt end at the workplace. For many women, a pronounced gender gap haunts them through their retirement years.
According to the latest Global Gender Gap Report, its going to take 217 years to achieve gender parity. Heres why more women in leadership roles is key to changing that.
Last week the World Economic Forum released its Global Gender Gap Report (Hausmann et al. 2010). As expected, the data in the report illustrates a significant and persistent pay and achievement gap between males and females around the world.
Gender gaps and biases continue in all spheres of life - wages, access to the internet, access to medicines, and medical research, just to name a few. Yet, data are not systematically collected and produced to understand these many gender gaps, especially those that persist in economy and trade.

In all industrialized countries, women outlive men at all ages, but women show much lower health indices than men of the same age, which is the so-called male-female-health-survival paradox. Research on sex differences in health and mortality has proliferated, yet there is still no full understanding of whether behavioral factors explain most of the gender gap or whether biological and social differences contribute more substantially to explaining sex differences in health and survival. The Max Planck Research group Gender Gaps in Health and Survival focuses on the question of whether gender-specific behavioral differences explain the differences in health and mortality between women and men. The researchers of the group investigate how universal the male-female-health-survival paradox across different countries and what is the role of biological, demographic, and social factors in driving the paradox is.. ...
We examined the association for rates of age- and sex-standardized body mass index (zBMI) gain between 0-3, 3-18, and 18-36 months with BP in children at 36-72 months of age. We collected repeated measures of zBMI and BP in 2502 children. zBMI was calculated using the World Health Organization standards. Each childs zBMI at birth and rates of zBMI gain in each period from birth to 36 months were estimated using linear spline multilevel models. Generalized estimating equations were used to determine whether zBMI at birth and zBMI gain between 0-3, 3-18, and 18-36 months were each associated with repeated measures of BP at 36-72 months of age. We sequentially conditioned on zBMI at birth and zBMI gain in each period prior to each period tested, as covariates, and adjusted for important socio-demographic, familial, and study design covariates. We examined whether these associations were modified by birthweight or maternal obesity, by including interaction terms. After adjusting for all covariates and

Where estimates are derived from the CURF, it is essential that they are calculated by adding the weights of persons in each category and not just by counting the number in each category. If each persons weight is ignored, then no account would be taken of a persons chance of selection or of different response rates across population groups, and the resulting estimates could be significantly biased and would only represent distributions within the actual selected sample and not the population of interest. The application of weights will ensure that the subsequent estimates conform to an independently estimated distribution of the population by age and sex, rather than to the age and sex distribution within the sample itself ...

IHME research used de-identified death records from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and population counts from the U.S. Census Bureau, NCHS, and the Human Mortality Database and small area estimation models in order to estimate county-level mortality rates from all cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, ischemic stroke, and other types. This dataset provides estimates for age-standardized mortality rates by CVD type and sex at the county level for each state, the District of Columbia, and the United States as a whole for 1980-2014, as well as the changes in rates for each location during this period. Also included are data on the 10 counties with the highest and lowest mortality rates for each CVD type in 2014 and the top 10 causes of death by CVD type for each county. Study results were published in JAMA in May 2017 in Trends and patterns of geographic variations in cardiovascular mortality among US counties, ...
Objective: We aimed to evaluate the changes in cardiovascular-related health care utilization (drug therapies, hospitalizations) and mortality for the diabetes population during a 9-year period in Saskatchewan, Canada.. Research Design and Methods: We identified annual diabetes prevalence rates for people ≥30 years between 1993 and 2001 from the administrative databases of Saskatchewan Health. Annual rates of evidence based drug therapies [antihypertensives, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, HMG-CoAse reductase inhibitors (statins)], hospitalizations for cerebrovascular and cardiac events, and all-cause mortality were estimated. Rates were direct age- sex-standardized using the 2001 Canadian population, and trends over time were assessed using Joinpoint regression.. Results: From 1993-2001, diabetes prevalence increased 34% (4.7% to 6.5%, p,0.001) with the highest rates in males and those ≥65 years. The rate of increase in diabetes prevalence appeared to slow in those ...

This commentary, by Leonard Sax, makes an interesting point. He says: The real gender gap is not in ability but in motivation--not in what girls and boys can do, but in what girls and boys want to do: specifically, in what they want to learn, and how they want to learn it. The number of women studying physics and computer science has dropped by 50 percent in the past 20 years, says Sax, and part of the reason may be that girls respond better to different teaching methods than boys do. They're more interested in the nature of things than...
At the start of the epidemic, the only people being tested were those who were being admitted to hospital, who were seriously ill. Many of them died. Which is why, in France, there was this very sharp, initial case fatality rate of 35%. In the UK the initial case fatality rate was I think 14%. Last time I looked at the UK figures, the case fatality was 5%, and falling fast.. This fall has occurred, and will occur everywhere in the World, because as you increase your testing, you pick up more and more people with less severe symptoms. People who are far less likely to die. The more you test, the more the case fatality rate falls.. It falls even more dramatically when you start to test people who have no symptoms at all. In fact, as you broaden your testing net, something else very important happens. You gradually move from looking at the case fatality rate to the infection fatality rate.. The infection fatality rate is the measure of how many people who are infected [even those without symptoms, ...

Age-Adjusted Death Rate: When comparing rates over time or across different populations, crude rates (the number of deaths per 100,000 persons) can be misleading, because differences in the age distributions of the various populations are not considered. Since death is age-dependent, the comparison of crude rates of death can be especially deceptive.. Age-adjusted rates take into account the diverse age distributions of the populations. Valid comparisons between age-adjusted rates can be made, provided the same standard population and age groups have been used in the calculation of the rates. The direct method of adjustment was used to produce the age-adjusted rates for this report. In this method, the population is first divided into reasonable homogeneous age ranges, and the age-specific rate is calculated for each age range. Then, each age-specific rate is weighted by multiplying it by the proportion of the standard population in the respective age group. The age-adjusted rate is the sum of ...
Data analysis. The average annual incidence of cancer in Gipuzkoa for the period 1998-2002 is presented for all sites together, and also for specific sites, and expressed in rates per 100,000 persons at risk per year. Crude, agespecific and age-standardized incidence rates were calculated by gender, using the direct method and adjusted with European and World population data3. Furthermore, cumulative incidence rates were calculated for each site and gender, from birth to 65 and 75 years of age.. The cancer incidence trend for the period 1986-2002 was studied for all tumours and the most frequent sites. The general trend was quantified by applying the Poisson regression12, after adjusting for age, with separate models for men and women. In this model, a linear trend was assumed for the logarithm of the rates. Goodness of fit was assessed by devianceand its degrees of freedom. The significance level was set at 0.05. In the case of prostate cancer, the Poisson model did not fit correlated as a ...
We show that the narrowing gender gap and the growth in earnings inequality are consistent with a simple model in which skills are heterogeneous, and the growth in skill prices has been particularly strong for skills with which women are well endowed. Empirical analysis of DOT, CPS, and NLSY79 data finds evidence to support this model. A large increase in the prices of cognitive and people skills--skills with which women are well endowed--and a decline in the price of motor skills account for up to 40 percent of the rising inequality and 20 percent of the narrowing gender gap. (Contains 12 footnotes, 11 tables, and 1 figure.)
This report presents worldwide estimates of annual mortality from all cancers and for 18 specific cancer sites around 1985. The following dashboard provides figures for observed (or limited duration) cancer prevalence in England. This observed prevalence counts the number of people that were diagnosed with a cancer between 1995 and 2017 and were still alive on the 31st December 2017. Cancer prevalence is useful to understand how many people in the population are living with a cancer diagnosis. There are different ways to measure different types of cancer prevalence - a summary of the different methods is available here . Cancer prevalence is a product of both cancer incidence and survival and should be interpreted with these factors in mind, especially if making comparisons across tumour groups or populations. For example, a cancer with high incidence but poor survival outcomes could have similar prevalence to a tumour type with lower incidence but high survival rates. The dashboard presents prevalence counts and rates for Clinical Commissioning Groups, Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships and Cancer ...

European age-standardised rate (per 100,000), directly age standardised using the European standard population (2013). Please note changes from previous Health Maps Wales publications. For this release, data has been standardised using the new 2013 European Standard population. Eurostat, the statistical institute of the European Union, decided at the end of 2012 to bring the artificial European Standard population (ESP) structure up to date. The new ESP has replaced the existing 1976 ESP. This change will cause age-standardised rates to increase in most cases because the new ESP gives much greater weight to older age-groups to better reflect the ageing population. As most deaths/hospital admissions occur at older ages, mortality and admission rates will generally be higher when calculated with the 2013 ESP compared to the 1976 ESP. The data produced here is therefore not directly comparable to previous publications (which were calculated using 1976 ESP), and the newly produced figures within ...

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta recently issued a very disconcerting report on teen suicide. The report indicated the suicide rate among girls between the ages of 15 and 19 reached a 40-year high in 2015. The suicide rate for teen girls doubled between 2007 and 2015.By comparison, the 2015 suicide rate for boys in the same age group was lower than in the peak years of the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s. Substantial increaseThese data show that between 2007 and 2015, theres substantial increases in suicide rates for both young males and young females, said Tom Simon, an author of the report and associate director for science in the division of violence protection at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which published the new data Thursday. For young males, there was a 31 percent increase in suicide rates, and for young females, the suicide rate doubled, Simon said. The suicide rate for males between 15 and 19 increased from 12 per 100,000 ...

There is no problem with learning anything other than keeping in mind that taking the time to learn one thing means that you wont have the time to learn something else. Unless, as I pointed out in my other comment, you do it in your spare time instead of another activity in that same time. People make these tradeoffs all the time with their time. For the record although I only took 1 required course in programming in college [1] I was able to learn enough programming in my spare time [2] because I enjoyed playing with computers as it used to be called. And what I learned has been tremendously helpful to me and has allowed me to make money although not from writing programs for other people. I can directly tie what I am doing today to earn a living to the time that I spent many years ago just trying to write some helpful programs (for myself) or otherwise just playing around. I am probably the poster child of what can be done with a little knowledge and exposure.[1] I didnt like the course I ...
