IBNA Special Report. Pristina, May 6, 2014/Independent Balkan News Agency. By Elton Tota. Republic of Serbia has started negotiations for the accession in the European Union (EU). But, it has not yet given up on Kosovo and its Constitution.. Analysts and constitutional experts say for IBNA that in the near future, Serbia must make constitutional amendments in order to give up on Kosovo once and for all, if it aims EU accession.. Professor of constitutional law, Fatos Rushiti told IBNA that in the future, its necessary for Serbia to take the formal step and remove Kosovo as part of its territory from the Constitution. Rushiti says that EU has made it clear that Serbia cannot be part of this organization if it doesnt make this step official.. The Serb government will face great pressure from the EU in order to remove Kosovo from the preamble of its Constitution. In the period to come, this will turn into an ultimatum for Serbia, therefore, it must give up from Kosovo as soon as possible in the ...
In February, Yugoslavia became a federal state called the Republic of Serbia and Montenegro. Through times of war, internal strife and economic hardship, health has taken a back seat. Now Serbia, emerging from international isolation, is on the brink of another catastrophe-an epidemic of tobacco deaths.. In Serbia, every second man smokes, as does every third woman, and every fourth teenager. The past three decades have seen a dramatic increase in smoking among women, and among secondary school and college students. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and lung diseases-already the leading causes of death in Serbia-are rocketing.. Although Serbia has a thriving domestic tobacco industry, the transnational companies are not far behind. Alongside local brands, Serbs puff on Lucky Strike, Marlboro, and-for those who can afford it-Davidoff. In spring, Belgrade hosted its International Film Festival. The main sponsor was BAT.. As former Yugoslavia, the country was a key destination and shipment route for ...
As the result of dramatic political changes, civil wars, and a long-term refugee crisis from the end of the last to beginning of this century, the population of Serbia has experienced significant health problems. The aim of this study was to assess cancer mortality trends in Serbia. This nationwide study was carried out to analyze cancer mortality in Serbia during 1991-2015 using official data. The age-standardized mortality rates (per 100,000) were calculated by direct standardization, using the world standard population by Segi. The average annual percent change (AAPC) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were computed using joinpoint regression analysis. Age-period-cohort analysis was performed to address the possible underlying reasons for the observed temporal trends. Over the 25-year study period, there were 466,075 cancer deaths (266,043 males and 200,032 females) in Serbia. Overall cancer mortality increased between 1991 and 2009 in both males (by + 0.9% per year) and females (by + 0.8

The Acting Director of Serbian power utility EPS Milorad Grcic said that the price of electricity will not be increased in 2016.. As Grcic pointed out, the reason for this decision is that in the first three months of this year, EPS achieved saving in the amount of 48.6 million euros, while the companys profit amounted to 113.4 million euros which is 6.5 times more than expected. He added that the price of electricity on the market has never been lower and that electricity prices in Serbia are among the lowest in Europe.. The last electricity price increase of 12 % was in August 2015.. Last week however, Head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission to Serbia James Roaf said that Serbian citizens should get used to the adjustment of regulated electricity prices from year to year, noting that the increase in regulated prices of electricity from year to year is normal practice in many countries around the world. Last year, the Government of Serbia reached an agreement with the IMF to ...
Apart from Portugal and Serbia, the other countries that have been drawn into Group A are the Republic of Ireland, Azerbaijan and Luxembourg. It was also announced by UEFA that World Cup hosts Qatar will be joining this group and their games with the other teams will serve as friendlies as the Asian nation continues to prepare for the tournament scheduled to take place at the end of 2022. The tournament is scheduled to start on November 21, 2022 through to December 18, 2022.. Before the draw took place, Serbia were in the second pot alongside other countries like Wales, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, Turkey, Slovakia and Romania. Serbia might need to finish as either the group winners or the second-placed team to have a chance of making it to the World Cup tournament billed for Qatar in two years time. All the ten group winners will qualify automatically, while the teams in second place will go into the playoffs alongside the two teams from the UEFA Nations League. From the 12 ...
We are writing to urge you to use the upcoming European Union (EU) Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg to re-state clearly the EUs principled approach towards Serbia in relation to its cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). In particular, we believe that the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) should adopt conclusions insisting that Serbia fully cooperate with the ICTY, including through the arrest and transfer of Ratko Mladic, so that the Commission and eventually the Council can proceed with the signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA). This would strongly contribute to the strengthening of ties between the EU and Serbia. The lead up to the initialing of the SAA represents an important opportunity to press Serbia to increase its efforts to locate, arrest and transfer Ratko Mladic, one of the architects of the Srebrenica massacre, to the ICTY. As you know, Serbias previous non-cooperation with the ICTY ...

BELGRADE - Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the NATO air campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) and the former regime of Slobodan Milošević. Nowadays, Serbia, Kosovo, and NATO member states continue to interpret these events in different ways, although everyone agrees that such things must not be repeated again. However, in spite of the good relations and cooperation that Serbia has with NATO, problems from the past that are related to 1999 are hindering deeper cooperation.. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić perceives the bombing as aggression and he specifies that we should not be afraid to call things by their real name. I am sending a message that such things should never be repeated and that nowadays we need a good and decent relationship with NATO in order to prevent Serbia from getting into such a position again. But it is also important for us that we dont forget the crimes that have been committed against our people and our children, ...
Once again this March, the Belgrade Forum for a World of Equals, the Club of Generals and Admirals of Serbia and other independent non-party associations in Serbia pay tribute to the victims of NATO 1999 aggression on Serbia (FRY). This aggression took lives of more than thousand defenders, military and the police and their officers, and also of thousands of civilians, including 87 children. Regrettably, the final list of the civilian casualties has not been determined as yet, although the number is estimated to stand at over 3,000. About 10.000 people were wounded. However, the number of those who lost their lives after the end of the aggression due to sustained heavy injuries, or from unexploded cluster bombs, chemical poisoning that resulted from the destruction of refineries, transformer stations, chemical factories and, in particular, due to the delayed effects of the use of missiles with depleted uranium, most likely, will never be precisely determined. There is a certainty, though, of a ...
On the occasion of the United States Independence Day, on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia and on my own behalf, I would like to send you my most sincere congratulations and best wishes for the prosperity of your country and the well-being of American citizens, Selaković said in his congratulatory message.. Minister Selaković reminded that this year, Serbia and the United States of America mark the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and that our two countries were allies in crucial moments in history, guided by faith in truth, justice and progress.. Selaković pointed out that more than a century ago, the Serbian flag fluttered over the White House and that many American citizens, in the difficult days that Serbia went through during and after the Great War, expressed support for the Serbian people worthy of admiration, which is why their charities remained deeply rooted in the memory of our people.. I use this opportunity to ...

So here is our verified soccer prediction for today and it is for the match between the teams of Serbia and Scotland.. Serbia often do well at home in important matches.. The Serbs started their campaign in the League of Nations quite badly this year and have only 2 points from their first 4 games with a minimal chance of 1st place. Between these matches, however, Serbia managed to win 2-1 after extra time as a guest of Norway in the most important match that brought them here. In addition, the Serbs played very well throughout the match and perhaps deserved to win in regular time against the strong team of Norway with Holland.. ...

During October and November 2014, a survey was conducted in order to establish the presence of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931) on the territory of Serbia. Survey revealed the presence of this fly in four districts (Rasinski, Mačvanski, Raški and Pčinjski), in sampled raspberry and blackberry ripe fruits, as well as in common fig and grape. Collected fruits were used for the rearing of Drosophilid larvae to adults, which were subsequently subjected to morphological and molecular characterization. The presence of D. suzukii was confirmed in all surveyed districts, as well as in Zemun (City of Belgrade). This is the first report of the highly invasive fruit pest D. suzukii on the territory of Serbia ...
When EU leaders meet with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica this week, they should insist on Serbias full cooperation with the Yugoslav tribunal, Human Rights Watch said in a letter sent today. In a letter to High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana, Commissioner Olli Rehn, and Commission President José Manuel Barroso, Human Rights Watch asked them to make clear to Kostunica that full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) - including the arrest and transfer of Ratko Mladic - remains a condition for signing a Stabilization and Association Agreement with Serbia.. As EU negotiations with Serbia near completion, this is the moment for Belgrade to arrest and surrender Ratko Mladic and other fugitives wanted by The ...

According to latest statistics, the number of children falling ill in Serbia is about twice as high as in the rest of Europe, i.e. 355 infants per million inhabitants, while in the rest of Europe there are 165 per million inhabitants. Before 1999 there were 160 children. Leukaemia in particular is on the rise among children between the ages of five and nine. According to the oncologist Professor Slobodan Cikaric, the proportion of leukaemia patients is 110 percent higher than before the bombing. (4). The serious radioactive contamination of humans and other living beings as well as the contamination of the environment are irreversible. But there is an urgent need to apologise to the people of Serbia for the crimes that have been committed and to make reparations, both material and immaterial, for the crimes that have been committed: these include the disclosure of the places of use and the composition of the weapons used, the cleaning of the soil and waters, financial compensation for all the ...

Serbia and Montenegro was a confederated union which existed between 2003 and 2006. The two republics initially formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. The economy of Serbia and Montenegro entered a prolonged decline in 1989. Exacerbated by the economic embargo imposed during the Bosnian war, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) economys downward spiral showed no real sign of recovery until 1995. GDP was nowhere near its 1991 level, but the NATO bombing in 1999 of the basic infrastructure of the country and many factories, as well as a renewed embargo caused a further huge drop in GDP in relation to the 1991 level. The first sign of an economic recovery occurred in 2001 after the removal of Milošević on 5 October 2000. A vigorous team of economic reformers has worked to tame inflation (non-energy inflation is less than 9% in 2002, down from over 120% two years earlier) and rationalize the SCG economy. GDP, although only half of its 1997 level, is projected to increase steadily ...

As a lovely, sparkling snow falls steadily over Chicagoland on this last day of 2013, December 31st, it seems most appropriate to pay tribute to those Serb military forces and civilians who embarked on a now legendary exodus from Serbia in the late fall and winter of 1915/1916 southward through Montenegro and Albania to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The Great Serbian Retreat, also known as the Albanian Golgotha, was an extraordinary human event in the history of the 20th Century. Though it was a retreat, seen by the Serbian commanders such as Field Marshal Radomir Putnik who ordered it as the only viable alternative to complete annihilation in the wake of a devastating combined attack by the Central Powers of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Bulgaria against Serbia that began in October of 1915, this retreat would ultimately result in the salvation and resurrection of what was left of the Serbian Army. This vanquished Serbian army would rise again to fight another day, and this time it would be ...

Hungarian authorities have reported about significant increase of the number of migrants illegally crossing the border with Serbia. This year, tensions in the countrys southern border have significantly increased, says the report.. This month about 1,500 migrants tried to cross the border from Serbia illegally, and only 500 during the past weekend. It is important to note that we are not talking about the Syrians, but about the so-called economic migrants from Morocco, Iran, Palestine and other Middle Eastern states.. Balkan States, which are the first on the way of refugees to Europe, are still unable to agree on self-defense measures. In particular, Slovenia which today passes only those who are planning to move to Europe in transit, has offered to stop migrants in Greece and Macedonia. Those limits, according to the Slovenian authorities, are required in connection with the terrorist threat posed by the uncontrolled flow of migrants.. ...

In 1991, Croatia, Slovenia, and Macedonia declared independence, followed by Bosnia in 1992. The remaining republics of Serbia and Montenegro declared a new Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) in April 1992 ...

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a widely cultivated cereal in Serbia, with average production of approximately 4.3 t ha−1 in the period from 2015 to 2017 (Statistical Yearbook оf the Republic of Serbia, 2018). The main growing area for wheat production in Serbia is Vojvodina (Northern Province of Serbia), where average total production of wheat for the mentioned three-year period amounted to 1 526 425 t. In the recent years, an ancient wheat subspecies - spelt (Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta L. Thell) - has received growing production interest due to its superior nutritional and pro-health properties.. According to IARC classification, aflatoxins are in the first group as carcinogen compounds for humans and animals (IARC, 2002). Aspergillus flavus and associated toxins have occurred mainly on maize in temperate regions of Serbia when the weather conditions were dry and warm (Kos et al. , 2013; Janıć-Hajnal et al., 2017). However, a high incidence of A. flavus (45.8%) on wheat was recorded ...

Chicory (Cichorium intybus, Asteraceae) is a typical Mediterranean plant indigenous to Europe, western Asia, Egypt, and North America (3). It is commonly consumed as a fresh vegetable in salads. In rural areas of Serbia it grows as a weed in crops, but it is used in folk medicine to treat skin disorders due to its antihepatotoxic activity (3). Methanol extracts of chicory leaves showed moderate antibacterial activity against enteric bacteria (3). A phytoplasma-like disease, expressed as proliferation of chicory shoots and flowers, was observed on wild plants for the first time in Obrenovac vicinity (44°40′ N, 20°20′ E) in July 2012. A flattening of the stem with a large number of filamentous leaves, contortion and abnormal growth of flowers on the stem (typical fasciation symptoms) were observed. Diseased plants did not produce seeds. Total DNA was extracted from the leaf midveins of 15 symptomatic and five symptomless plants (4). PCR amplification of 1.5-kb 16S rDNA fragment was performed ...
The crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic deepens the already serious social and economic problems the societies in the region of former socialist Yugoslavia face. Our struggle must include solidarity politics, stated the four leftist parties that adopted the Declaration on Regional Solidarity.. The initiators of the Declaration on Regional Solidarity are the Social Democratic Union (Serbia), the Left (Slovenia), the Workers Front (Croatia) and the New Left (Croatia). They point to the fact that the societies of the former Yugoslav republics share a number of problems, stating that an effective response to them should therefore also be common.. We will either passively witness a further decline in living standards and working conditions, together with a growing dependence on domestic tycoons and foreign capital whose sole interest is profit extraction - or fight actively for the basic needs of the majority of the people. That struggle is impossible without joint efforts and regional ...

With Trump in the White House, the Doomsday Clock was moved to two minutes until global catastrophe in January of this year. Yesterday we were moved even closer to global nuclear war.. Following the 19th century Napoleonic Wars, Europe settled into decades of peace guaranteed by a doctrine of Balance of Powers. It notion was that with each side possessing equal military forces no nation could win a war and so would not start a war. That peace ended on on 28 June 1914 when Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo, Serbia, on 28 June 1914. That caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. Because Serbia had a mutual defense agreement with Russia, Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary and ordered a general mobilization. That posed a threat to Germany which declared war on Russia. That, in turn, lead to France and England declaring war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. In a sense, the doctrine of Balance of Powers worked in that the war ...

Authors: JADRANKA ZUTIC, DJORDJE CVETOJEVIC, LJUBISA VELJOVIC, OLIVER RADANOVIC, SLOBODAN STANOJEVIC, BRANISLAV KURELJUSIC Abstract: The objective of this work was to present the first case of Brucella suis biovar 2 isolation in outdoor reared pigs in Serbia. B. suis biovar 2 has not previously been detected in Serbia, from either wild boar or outdoor reared pigs. In our case, brucellosis was discovered in the region of Srem, which geographically constitutes a part of northwestern Serbia. Outdoor reared pigs in the Srem region are part of an extensive breeding system in the field and woods. In the course of a random visit to a herd in the above-mentioned area, the animals owner discovered two aborted fetuses, thereafter presented for laboratory examinations. B. suis biovar 2 was isolated from both fetuses. Isolated strains were identified using both classical and molecular techniques, including genomic sequencing. Based on epizootiological data, we were unable to establish the source of ...
So the ICTY Judges were very sure to make it clear that both Milosevic and Karadzic were on the same page generally in seeking a Greater Serbia, a thread running throughout the Prosecution case against Milosevic in his case. Milosevic denied it in his trial since it was nothing but NATO propaganda.. Both Karadzic and Milosevic wanted to preserve the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as much as possible. That was their goal, not to create a Greater Serbia by ethnically cleansing non-Serb areas in the republics which had split off from the Federal Republic. But that is the mantra still chanted in the Karadzic case and the thesis of the prosecution case is that this alleged desire to create a Greater Serbia, was a joint criminal enterprise and, that from this ambition, all the crimes they allege against them were the consequence.. I will not go deeply into the concept of joint criminal enterprise since it is a concept unknown to law anywhere in the world and is an invention by the prosecution of ...

Epidemiology of Oral Cavity and Pharyngeal CancersOral cavity and pharyngeal cancers (OCPc) encompass malignancies arising in variety of anatomical subsites and are homogeneous regarding epidemiology, clinical presentation, associated risk factors and treatment modalities (Robinson and Macfarlane, 2003; Conway et al., 2006). Worldwide, they are the sixth most common type of cancer, with an estimated 529,500 new cases and 292,300 deaths globally during 2012, accounting for 3,8% of all cancer cases and 3,6% of cancer deaths (Shield et al., 2017; Ferlay et al., 2015). The regions with the highest incidence of OCPc include South and Southeast Asia (India, Pakistan, Shri Lanka), Eastern and Western Europe (Hungary, Slovakia, France, Portugal), Latin America (Brazil, Uruguay, Puerto Riko) and the Pacific (Papua New Guinea) (Warnakulasuriya 2009; Chaturvedi et al.,2013; Weatherspoon et al., 2015). European plum (Prunus domestica L.) is a significant commercial crop in Serbia in terms of total fruit production, and it is traditionally processed into slivovitz brandy. The annual plum yields in Serbia is strongly affected by Monilinia laxa, causing brown rot in stone fruits. The fungal communities associated with leaves and fruits of four local Serbian plum cultivars (Požegača, Ranka, Lepotica and Rodna) were investigated in two phenological stages during early (May) and late (July) fruit maturation. Alpha diversity indices showed that fungal communities were heterogeneous and Beta diversity indicated that autochthonous fungal communities depended upon seasonal changes and the cultivars themselves. The phylum Ascomycota was the most abundant in all samples, with relative abundance (RA) between 46% in the Požegača cultivar (May) and 89% in the Lepotica cultivar (July). The most abundant genus for all plum cultivars in May was Aureobasidium, with RA from 19.27 to 33.69%, followed by ...
