In February, Yugoslavia became a federal state called the Republic of Serbia and Montenegro. Through times of war, internal strife and economic hardship, health has taken a back seat. Now Serbia, emerging from international isolation, is on the brink of another catastrophe-an epidemic of tobacco deaths.. In Serbia, every second man smokes, as does every third woman, and every fourth teenager. The past three decades have seen a dramatic increase in smoking among women, and among secondary school and college students. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and lung diseases-already the leading causes of death in Serbia-are rocketing.. Although Serbia has a thriving domestic tobacco industry, the transnational companies are not far behind. Alongside local brands, Serbs puff on Lucky Strike, Marlboro, and-for those who can afford it-Davidoff. In spring, Belgrade hosted its International Film Festival. The main sponsor was BAT.. As former Yugoslavia, the country was a key destination and shipment route for ...

We are writing to urge you to use the upcoming European Union (EU) Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg to re-state clearly the EUs principled approach towards Serbia in relation to its cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). In particular, we believe that the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) should adopt conclusions insisting that Serbia fully cooperate with the ICTY, including through the arrest and transfer of Ratko Mladic, so that the Commission and eventually the Council can proceed with the signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA). This would strongly contribute to the strengthening of ties between the EU and Serbia. The lead up to the initialing of the SAA represents an important opportunity to press Serbia to increase its efforts to locate, arrest and transfer Ratko Mladic, one of the architects of the Srebrenica massacre, to the ICTY. As you know, Serbias previous non-cooperation with the ICTY ...

During October and November 2014, a survey was conducted in order to establish the presence of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931) on the territory of Serbia. Survey revealed the presence of this fly in four districts (Rasinski, Mačvanski, Raški and Pčinjski), in sampled raspberry and blackberry ripe fruits, as well as in common fig and grape. Collected fruits were used for the rearing of Drosophilid larvae to adults, which were subsequently subjected to morphological and molecular characterization. The presence of D. suzukii was confirmed in all surveyed districts, as well as in Zemun (City of Belgrade). This is the first report of the highly invasive fruit pest D. suzukii on the territory of Serbia ...
When EU leaders meet with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica this week, they should insist on Serbias full cooperation with the Yugoslav tribunal, Human Rights Watch said in a letter sent today. The EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), the Commissioner for Enlargement, and the President of the European Commission will meet Kostunica in Brussels on Wednesday, September 12, 2007.. In a letter to High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana, Commissioner Olli Rehn, and Commission President José Manuel Barroso, Human Rights Watch asked them to make clear to Kostunica that full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) - including the arrest and transfer of Ratko Mladic - remains a condition for signing a Stabilization and Association Agreement with Serbia.. "As EU negotiations with Serbia near completion, this is the moment for Belgrade to arrest and surrender Ratko Mladic and other fugitives wanted by The ...

Serbia and Montenegro was a confederated union which existed between 2003 and 2006. The two republics initially formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. The economy of Serbia and Montenegro entered a prolonged decline in 1989. Exacerbated by the economic embargo imposed during the Bosnian war, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) economys downward spiral showed no real sign of recovery until 1995. GDP was nowhere near its 1991 level, but the NATO bombing in 1999 of the basic infrastructure of the country and many factories, as well as a renewed embargo caused a further huge drop in GDP in relation to the 1991 level. The first sign of an economic recovery occurred in 2001 after the removal of Milošević on 5 October 2000. A vigorous team of economic reformers has worked to tame inflation (non-energy inflation is less than 9% in 2002, down from over 120% two years earlier) and rationalize the SCG economy. GDP, although only half of its 1997 level, is projected to increase steadily ...
B-Class articles may be reviewed by any user with no restrictions whatsoever. However, editors are urged to perform such an assessment strictly adhering to the B-Class article. The B6 criterion is normally interpreted conforming to Wikipedia:TECHNICAL guideline: Every reasonable attempt should be made to ensure that material is presented in the most widely understandable manner possible. By extension, for the purposes of the WikiProject Serbia fulfillment of this criterion also means that an average Wikipedia user with no specific knowledge about Serbia and/or the Serbs will be able to understand the context of the article and extract useful information (ideally, even insight) from it. For example, a well-written article on a historical topic will have a "Background" section where necessary, rather than just springing right off into details of the event. An article may be assessed as a B-Class article only if it meets all six criteria listed above. If the article fails one or more of the above ...
As a lovely, sparkling snow falls steadily over Chicagoland on this last day of 2013, December 31st, it seems most appropriate to pay tribute to those Serb military forces and civilians who embarked on a now legendary exodus from Serbia in the late fall and winter of 1915/1916 southward through Montenegro and Albania to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The Great Serbian Retreat, also known as the "Albanian Golgotha", was an extraordinary human event in the history of the 20th Century. Though it was a retreat, seen by the Serbian commanders such as Field Marshal Radomir Putnik who ordered it as the only viable alternative to complete annihilation in the wake of a devastating combined attack by the Central Powers of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Bulgaria against Serbia that began in October of 1915, this retreat would ultimately result in the salvation and resurrection of what was left of the Serbian Army. This vanquished Serbian army would rise again to fight another day, and this time it would be ...
Serbia, country in the west-central Balkans. For most of the 20th century, it was a part of Yugoslavia. Hungarian authorities have reported about significant increase of the number of migrants illegally crossing the border with Serbia. This year, tensions in the countrys southern border have significantly increased, says the report.. This month about 1,500 migrants tried to cross the border from Serbia illegally, and only 500 during the past weekend. It is important to note that we are not talking about the Syrians, but about the so-called "economic migrants" from Morocco, Iran, Palestine and other Middle Eastern states.. Balkan States, which are the first on the way of refugees to Europe, are still unable to agree on self-defense measures. In particular, Slovenia which today passes only those who are planning to move to Europe in transit, has offered to stop migrants in Greece and Macedonia. Those limits, according to the Slovenian authorities, are required in connection with the terrorist threat posed by the uncontrolled flow of migrants.. ...

A major strength of these findings is that the data come from a randomised, population-based sample of women living in Belgrade. This was the first study in Serbia that aimed to comprehensively assess prevalence of violence against women and related factors.40 Another strength is the robust methodology used (WHO Multi-country Study on Violence Against Women), which assures that findings are of high quality and internationally comparable with many other sites worldwide where the same method was and is being used.7. Another limitation is the relatively low household response rate (59.8%), compared to other countries where the same methodology was applied,7 even if this response rate was better than usually obtained in Belgrade (Dragisa Bjeloglav, Strategic Marketing, survey company in Belgrade, personal communication, 2003). The response rate could have been affected by the assassination of the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic at the time that the field work was starting, and the confusion ...

Over 120,000 refugees and migrants travelled through Serbia on their way to the EU. This significant decrease compared to 2015 was in part due to the closure of borders to irregular migrants in the south and north. Serbias refusal to provide beds to accommodate more than 6,000 people on the move at any one time resulted in thousands being stranded in informal makeshift camps in appalling conditions at the border with Hungary, in derelict buildings and parks in Belgrade and other locations across the country. Infections and serious diseases among refugees and migrants were reported by volunteer groups and medical organizations. In November, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, which is responsible for organizing accommodation and care for refugees and migrants, informed groups providing support that they should cease all activity outside the formal reception centres, which were overcrowded and mostly unsuitable for long-term accommodation. Many refugees and migrants were subsequently evicted ...

In September 2011, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. Big Beef) plants showing typical symptoms of powdery mildew were collected in a greenhouse in the vicinity of Padinska Skela (District of City of Belgrade) in Serbia. Numerous circular, white colonies of powdery mildew were observed predominantly on the adaxial surface of the leaves, the petioles, and the stems. The foliage of infected plants turned yellow and necrotic, which was followed by rapid defoliation. Disease incidence was estimated by counting plants with powdery mildew symptoms in a random batch of 100 plants in four replicates and estimated to be extremely high, approaching 90%. Tomato plants (Novosadski Jabučar) were inoculated with conidia released from diseased tomato leaves positioned above the tomato leaves and maintained at 25°C with a 14-h photoperiod. Healthy tomato plants from the same lot, which were not exposed to the conidia shower, were used as negative control. The first white fungal colonies appeared on the ...

|p|Plants from genus Seseli, have been widely used in European traditional medicine, exhibiting antibacterial, antifungal, insect repellent, emmenogogue, antiflatulence, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, anti-tumor, antirheumatic activities and protective effect on human lymphocytes DNA. They usually grow on mountain rocky terrains. Part of their habitat on Vidlic Mountain, located in South-east Serbia, was struck with a large wildfire. Seseli rigidum fruit essential oils (from post fire and control areas) compositions were analyzed by GC and GC-MS, identifying monoterpenes α-pinene and sabinene as most abundant. Statistical tests showed a non-significant difference in chemical composition of these two oils, but a significant difference in comparison with the herb from a geographically different origin. Antimicrobial tests showed strong activities of the oils against tested bacteria, thus confirming its administration in various inflammation processes as a quite effective remedy. Applying DPPH. and
Downloadable! The influence of demographic variables on household consumption level and structure is understood but insufficiently studied in Serbia. This paper analyzes the connection between age as a demographic variable, and the size and structure of household consumption as economic phenomena. We discuss the research results, trying to explain the intensity and direction of the shown connection. The economic variables are usually set as determinants of demographic processes, but we set age as an independent demographic variable shaping household consumption without ignoring the household income level. It seems that the age structure of a household, particularly the age of the household head, has a significant influence on consumption structure.

Serbia has strict laws and regulations around imports, making it tricky to bring donations into the country. Taxes charged at the borders are often so high that it sometimes makes more sense to instead purchase cheap items once youre in the country.. Technically, the procedure for getting second clothes into the country is as follows:. You will need a sender and receiver organisation with matching paperwork on both ends. Áll items need to have been cleaned by a professional cleaning company and signed off as such. All items must be inventoried by item type and number, and boxed and clearly labelled according to the contents (1 box of trousers, measured by number and also by weight, to be on the safe side). New goods do not require cleaning but do require the same paperwork and packaging procedure.. Once your items are up for inspection at customs, you will need to pay import taxes. Your items will then be held there until claimed by the receiver organisation. If you simply turn up at the ...

If wackyfooty like the above is your cuppa, then the second half continued to oblige. The ref allowed Philipp Lahm to be tripped right outside the penalty area despite moments earlier whistling him for a dainty challenge that actually got the ball. I was making fixing cracks on the Twitter when Nemanja Vidic made a great diving save on the ball for Serbia. The only problem? Hes not the keeper. What the hell was he thinking? He threw his arms up like a Touchdown Jesus begging for lightning. Even Undiano, after an inexplicable hesitation, had to call for the penalty. That set up Lukas Podolski for the game-tying opportunity.. [Pause.]. The first thing (and probably only thing) people will remember from this game is the refereeing. But when this game died, its final whisper was not "Undiano" but rather, "Podolski." Fear not, game, for I hear you! This match, especially the second half, was all about Podolski. When the game started, I made a dork joke about whether Podolski would live up to the ...

Belgrade is the capital of the Republic of Serbia and is, as such, the countrys largest city with a population of about 1.7 million people [https://zis.beograd.gov.rs/upload/Beograd_u_brojkama_2010.pdf]. It lies on the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The city has a long history, dating back to the 4th century BC, when the area was settled by Celtic tribes. Later on, it became the Roman city of Singidunum, and relics of that era can still be seen in the city, particularly at Kalemegdan Fortress. During the Middle Ages the town became a Serbian stronghold until the Ottoman invasion. In 1878, when Serbia got its independence, Belgrade became the capital of the new country.

Serbian road network carries the bulk of traffic in the country. Total length of roads is 45,419 km of which 782 km are "class-Ia state roads" (i.e. motorways); 4,481 km are "class-Ib state roads" (national roads); 10,941 km are "class-II state roads" (regional roads) and 23,780 km are "municipal roads".[224][225][226] The road network, except for the most of class-Ia roads, are of comparatively lower quality to the Western European standards because of lack of financial resources for their maintenance in the last 20 years. There are currently 124 kilometers of motorways under construction: two sections 34 km-long of the A1 motorway (from south of Leskovac to Bujanovac), 67 km-long segment of A2 (between Belgrade and Ljig), and 23 kilometers on the A4 (east of Niš to the Bulgarian border).[227][228][229] Coach transport is very extensive: almost every place in the country is connected by bus, from largest cities to the villages; in addition there are international routes (mainly to countries of ...

The Western media presented the recent events in Serbia as peaceful and bloodless - another Velvet Revolution - despite the mayhem presented on television screens during the revolution. However, the organisers of the 5th October events were happy to admit that they drew inspiration from less cosy upheavals. The quasi-official historians of the revolution, Dragan Bujoevic and Ivan Radovanovic take it for granted that the Fascist seizure of power in Italy was a model for the march from Cacak. (1). Introduction Following the violent events in Belgrade on 5th October, especially the ransacking of the federal parliament and the seizure by force of the main state television station, the man who had dominated Yugoslav politics for a decade, Slobodan Milo evic, conceded defeat to Dr. Vojislav Ko tunica, leader of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia. If Milo evic had not been forced from power in this way, his term would have ended in June 2001 even if he had lost the elections. This disruption of ...

I was born in Vučitrn, Serbia, in 1984. Vučitrn is within Kosovo. Of course I dont live there anymore. Now, I dont wish to speak about many details, and I am not an expert in war, all I really want to say, is that I have seen it happen. And I am seeing it happen again. Unless I die tomorrow, I am going to see another war. The Muslim Albanians in Serbia do not want to live with us. They are trying to claim their territory, and they are very happy to kill Serbian civilians. In many parts of Kosovo you do not want to be heard speaking Serbian, it is very dangerous. And these Albanians look very similar to us, they are from similar geographical location, but in West Europe, their Muslims comes from very far away, so they have even less in common ...

Magia Posthuma is the title of a book written by the Catholic lawyer Karl Ferdinand von Schertz in 1704. In the book von Schertz examines the case of a spectre that roamed about and harmed the living. Several of these cases were known in Moravia where von Schertz published his book, as well as in neighbouring areas. Only two decades later, a similar case was investigated by Austrian officials in North Eastern Serbia. The local people called the spectre a vampire. This incident inspired the deacon Michael Ranft to publish a study on the mastication of the dead. Just a few years later, in 1732, another case of vampirism was investigated in Serbia. Reports of this investigation were published throughout Europe with the consequence that the interest in vampires exploded. Vampires became the topic of numerous learned articles and books. Cases of magia posthuma or vampirism, however, kept occurring. In 1755 empress Maria Theresa aided by her court physician Gerard van Swieten began passing laws ...

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease. In the majority of patients the course is progressive and leads to destruction of joints, functional disability, reduced quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. Advances in treatment for RA have been associated with an improvement in the health status of patients with RA in recent years.1 While the management of RA varies widely across Europe,2 the underlying pathophysiology does not differ between countries. A cross-sectional comparison of patients with RA in 15 different countries (largely European) revealed great variation in the drug management of patients with RA, including the delay in starting a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) ranging from ,6 to ,12 months, use of methotrexate (,80% of patients in the UK and Serbia had received methotrexate) and use of biological agents (,40% in France and Ireland vs. ,10% in Serbia and Poland).3 It is also noteworthy that disease activity scores varied and ...
Email: [email protected] Abstract. The current list of occupational diseases in Serbia contains 56 professional diseases and is of a closed type. As such, it is closer to the legalistic apprehension of the problem of occupational diseases, implying the attitude that only the diseases that are on the list may be recognized as occupational. Option to be strived for is an open list, which is much closer to the medical definition of occupational diseases. Official statistics show that there is a small number of occupational diseases in Serbia relative to the environment and the countries of Western Europe, but it does not mean that local working conditions are better than in other parts of the world. The verification of occupational diseases in our country is greatly complicated - difficult for many reasons, but also because of the lack of guidelines - procedures for proper regulation. Guidelines are not legally binding, but professional attitudes, which have the force of regulations in professional ...
After meeting each other for the first time at the OpenArch meeting in Modena (IT), April 2012, Viminacium and Archeon representatives met in the Netherlands to get a better understanding of their work together in OpenArch. Plans for the Dialogue with the Visitor were critically analysed by both parties. In the end, every superfluous detail was removed and a clear path forward was identified. There will be three workshops, the first one in Archeon in April 2013, but much preparation needs to be done. Also, all partners are involved in a visitor survey - we need these details to know what our starting point is. The personal contact between Viminacium and Archeon was also very important so the two museums know each other better and will know where they can complement the other.. ...

Im lucky - just last year, on 22 November 2015 I received a liver transplant and I am recovering well. I had a supportive team of doctors, nurses and other staff, which had a positive impact on me during the healing process and the medical care was beyond my expectations here in Serbia.. But this is not the case for all people. Since information on viral hepatitis - including surveillance and measurement of the burden - is not strong, we do not have enough policies in place to support those who need the highly expensive medication, transplants and care. For example, antiviral care medication is not available in my country and in many European countries the cost is very high - around €50 000. This was a barrier for me, and so many others, but thankfully I was able to purchase a generic cure.. I was diagnosed just by chance when I applied for a new job and had to go through routine medical checks; I had low levels of thrombocytes in my blood and they wanted to check why this was. It was about a ...
