In February, Yugoslavia became a federal state called the Republic of Serbia and Montenegro. Through times of war, internal strife and economic hardship, health has taken a back seat. Now Serbia, emerging from international isolation, is on the brink of another catastrophe-an epidemic of tobacco deaths.. In Serbia, every second man smokes, as does every third woman, and every fourth teenager. The past three decades have seen a dramatic increase in smoking among women, and among secondary school and college students. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and lung diseases-already the leading causes of death in Serbia-are rocketing.. Although Serbia has a thriving domestic tobacco industry, the transnational companies are not far behind. Alongside local brands, Serbs puff on Lucky Strike, Marlboro, and-for those who can afford it-Davidoff. In spring, Belgrade hosted its International Film Festival. The main sponsor was BAT.. As former Yugoslavia, the country was a key destination and shipment route for ...

We are writing to urge you to use the upcoming European Union (EU) Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg to re-state clearly the EUs principled approach towards Serbia in relation to its cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). In particular, we believe that the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) should adopt conclusions insisting that Serbia fully cooperate with the ICTY, including through the arrest and transfer of Ratko Mladic, so that the Commission and eventually the Council can proceed with the signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA). This would strongly contribute to the strengthening of ties between the EU and Serbia. The lead up to the initialing of the SAA represents an important opportunity to press Serbia to increase its efforts to locate, arrest and transfer Ratko Mladic, one of the architects of the Srebrenica massacre, to the ICTY. As you know, Serbias previous non-cooperation with the ICTY ...

During October and November 2014, a survey was conducted in order to establish the presence of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931) on the territory of Serbia. Survey revealed the presence of this fly in four districts (Rasinski, Mačvanski, Raški and Pčinjski), in sampled raspberry and blackberry ripe fruits, as well as in common fig and grape. Collected fruits were used for the rearing of Drosophilid larvae to adults, which were subsequently subjected to morphological and molecular characterization. The presence of D. suzukii was confirmed in all surveyed districts, as well as in Zemun (City of Belgrade). This is the first report of the highly invasive fruit pest D. suzukii on the territory of Serbia ...
When EU leaders meet with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica this week, they should insist on Serbias full cooperation with the Yugoslav tribunal, Human Rights Watch said in a letter sent today. The EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), the Commissioner for Enlargement, and the President of the European Commission will meet Kostunica in Brussels on Wednesday, September 12, 2007.. In a letter to High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana, Commissioner Olli Rehn, and Commission President José Manuel Barroso, Human Rights Watch asked them to make clear to Kostunica that full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) - including the arrest and transfer of Ratko Mladic - remains a condition for signing a Stabilization and Association Agreement with Serbia.. As EU negotiations with Serbia near completion, this is the moment for Belgrade to arrest and surrender Ratko Mladic and other fugitives wanted by The ...

According to latest statistics, the number of children falling ill in Serbia is about twice as high as in the rest of Europe, i.e. 355 infants per million inhabitants, while in the rest of Europe there are 165 per million inhabitants. Before 1999 there were 160 children. Leukaemia in particular is on the rise among children between the ages of five and nine. According to the oncologist Professor Slobodan Cikaric, the proportion of leukaemia patients is 110 percent higher than before the bombing. (4). The serious radioactive contamination of humans and other living beings as well as the contamination of the environment are irreversible. But there is an urgent need to apologise to the people of Serbia for the crimes that have been committed and to make reparations, both material and immaterial, for the crimes that have been committed: these include the disclosure of the places of use and the composition of the weapons used, the cleaning of the soil and waters, financial compensation for all the ...

Serbia and Montenegro was a confederated union which existed between 2003 and 2006. The two republics initially formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. The economy of Serbia and Montenegro entered a prolonged decline in 1989. Exacerbated by the economic embargo imposed during the Bosnian war, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) economys downward spiral showed no real sign of recovery until 1995. GDP was nowhere near its 1991 level, but the NATO bombing in 1999 of the basic infrastructure of the country and many factories, as well as a renewed embargo caused a further huge drop in GDP in relation to the 1991 level. The first sign of an economic recovery occurred in 2001 after the removal of Milošević on 5 October 2000. A vigorous team of economic reformers has worked to tame inflation (non-energy inflation is less than 9% in 2002, down from over 120% two years earlier) and rationalize the SCG economy. GDP, although only half of its 1997 level, is projected to increase steadily ...
B-Class articles may be reviewed by any user with no restrictions whatsoever. However, editors are urged to perform such an assessment strictly adhering to the B-Class article. The B6 criterion is normally interpreted conforming to Wikipedia:TECHNICAL guideline: Every reasonable attempt should be made to ensure that material is presented in the most widely understandable manner possible. By extension, for the purposes of the WikiProject Serbia fulfillment of this criterion also means that an average Wikipedia user with no specific knowledge about Serbia and/or the Serbs will be able to understand the context of the article and extract useful information (ideally, even insight) from it. For example, a well-written article on a historical topic will have a Background section where necessary, rather than just springing right off into details of the event. An article may be assessed as a B-Class article only if it meets all six criteria listed above. If the article fails one or more of the above ...
As a lovely, sparkling snow falls steadily over Chicagoland on this last day of 2013, December 31st, it seems most appropriate to pay tribute to those Serb military forces and civilians who embarked on a now legendary exodus from Serbia in the late fall and winter of 1915/1916 southward through Montenegro and Albania to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The Great Serbian Retreat, also known as the Albanian Golgotha, was an extraordinary human event in the history of the 20th Century. Though it was a retreat, seen by the Serbian commanders such as Field Marshal Radomir Putnik who ordered it as the only viable alternative to complete annihilation in the wake of a devastating combined attack by the Central Powers of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Bulgaria against Serbia that began in October of 1915, this retreat would ultimately result in the salvation and resurrection of what was left of the Serbian Army. This vanquished Serbian army would rise again to fight another day, and this time it would be ...

Hungarian authorities have reported about significant increase of the number of migrants illegally crossing the border with Serbia. This year, tensions in the countrys southern border have significantly increased, says the report.. This month about 1,500 migrants tried to cross the border from Serbia illegally, and only 500 during the past weekend. It is important to note that we are not talking about the Syrians, but about the so-called economic migrants from Morocco, Iran, Palestine and other Middle Eastern states.. Balkan States, which are the first on the way of refugees to Europe, are still unable to agree on self-defense measures. In particular, Slovenia which today passes only those who are planning to move to Europe in transit, has offered to stop migrants in Greece and Macedonia. Those limits, according to the Slovenian authorities, are required in connection with the terrorist threat posed by the uncontrolled flow of migrants.. ...

Gernot Rohr will be hoping to keep up his record of having never lost a friendly match with the Super Eagles when his team confronts Serbia on Tuesday at The Hive in London.. His current record is three wins and a draw from four friendly matches since he took over in August 2016.. When Serbia was revealed as one of the opponents for the Super Eagles on their way to Russia, it was a surety the Eagles would be well tested because the Serbians boast a powerhouse midfield even though Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is unavailable due to injury.. The Mladen Krstajic-tutored team is on the way to Russia and will look to show that the 2-1 loss to Morocco last Friday was a fluke.. They have a formidable spine with former Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, making sure things are tight at the back; Nemanja Matic providing cover and ammunition from midfield, while Aleksandar Mitrovic will ruffle many a defenders feathers. ...

A major strength of these findings is that the data come from a randomised, population-based sample of women living in Belgrade. This was the first study in Serbia that aimed to comprehensively assess prevalence of violence against women and related factors.40 Another strength is the robust methodology used (WHO Multi-country Study on Violence Against Women), which assures that findings are of high quality and internationally comparable with many other sites worldwide where the same method was and is being used.7. Another limitation is the relatively low household response rate (59.8%), compared to other countries where the same methodology was applied,7 even if this response rate was better than usually obtained in Belgrade (Dragisa Bjeloglav, Strategic Marketing, survey company in Belgrade, personal communication, 2003). The response rate could have been affected by the assassination of the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic at the time that the field work was starting, and the confusion ...

This years twenty-second International Review of Composers was conceived under the slogan A step into the unusual. Even though, perhaps, every annual Review could be treated in a similar way - as a kind of a step into the unusual, the reason behind this years slogan can, primarily, be found in the diverse range of instruments the audience has not had the chance to encounter at the Review yet. The entire evening programmes will, for the first time, be performed on instruments such as analogue synthesizers, saxophones, accordions, guitars etc.. Even though the majority of concerts will be held in already residential premises of the Review - Hall of the National Bank of Serbia, it has become a tradition of the Review to search for new, interesting and attractive concert venues in the city. One of those steps into the unknown shall be taken in the Americana Hall of the Belgrade Youth Centre. Furthermore, holding a concert at the premises of Studio 6 of the Belgrade Radio could also be unusual. ...
Over 120,000 refugees and migrants travelled through Serbia on their way to the EU. This significant decrease compared to 2015 was in part due to the closure of borders to irregular migrants in the south and north. Serbias refusal to provide beds to accommodate more than 6,000 people on the move at any one time resulted in thousands being stranded in informal makeshift camps in appalling conditions at the border with Hungary, in derelict buildings and parks in Belgrade and other locations across the country. Infections and serious diseases among refugees and migrants were reported by volunteer groups and medical organizations. In November, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, which is responsible for organizing accommodation and care for refugees and migrants, informed groups providing support that they should cease all activity outside the formal reception centres, which were overcrowded and mostly unsuitable for long-term accommodation. Many refugees and migrants were subsequently evicted ...

In September 2011, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. Big Beef) plants showing typical symptoms of powdery mildew were collected in a greenhouse in the vicinity of Padinska Skela (District of City of Belgrade) in Serbia. Numerous circular, white colonies of powdery mildew were observed predominantly on the adaxial surface of the leaves, the petioles, and the stems. The foliage of infected plants turned yellow and necrotic, which was followed by rapid defoliation. Disease incidence was estimated by counting plants with powdery mildew symptoms in a random batch of 100 plants in four replicates and estimated to be extremely high, approaching 90%. Tomato plants (Novosadski Jabučar) were inoculated with conidia released from diseased tomato leaves positioned above the tomato leaves and maintained at 25°C with a 14-h photoperiod. Healthy tomato plants from the same lot, which were not exposed to the conidia shower, were used as negative control. The first white fungal colonies appeared on the ...

Chicory (Cichorium intybus, Asteraceae) is a typical Mediterranean plant indigenous to Europe, western Asia, Egypt, and North America (3). It is commonly consumed as a fresh vegetable in salads. In rural areas of Serbia it grows as a weed in crops, but it is used in folk medicine to treat skin disorders due to its antihepatotoxic activity (3). Methanol extracts of chicory leaves showed moderate antibacterial activity against enteric bacteria (3). A phytoplasma-like disease, expressed as proliferation of chicory shoots and flowers, was observed on wild plants for the first time in Obrenovac vicinity (44°40′ N, 20°20′ E) in July 2012. A flattening of the stem with a large number of filamentous leaves, contortion and abnormal growth of flowers on the stem (typical fasciation symptoms) were observed. Diseased plants did not produce seeds. Total DNA was extracted from the leaf midveins of 15 symptomatic and five symptomless plants (4). PCR amplification of 1.5-kb 16S rDNA fragment was performed ...

Authors: JADRANKA ZUTIC, DJORDJE CVETOJEVIC, LJUBISA VELJOVIC, OLIVER RADANOVIC, SLOBODAN STANOJEVIC, BRANISLAV KURELJUSIC Abstract: The objective of this work was to present the first case of Brucella suis biovar 2 isolation in outdoor reared pigs in Serbia. B. suis biovar 2 has not previously been detected in Serbia, from either wild boar or outdoor reared pigs. In our case, brucellosis was discovered in the region of Srem, which geographically constitutes a part of northwestern Serbia. Outdoor reared pigs in the Srem region are part of an extensive breeding system in the field and woods. In the course of a random visit to a herd in the above-mentioned area, the animals owner discovered two aborted fetuses, thereafter presented for laboratory examinations. B. suis biovar 2 was isolated from both fetuses. Isolated strains were identified using both classical and molecular techniques, including genomic sequencing. Based on epizootiological data, we were unable to establish the source of ...
So the ICTY Judges were very sure to make it clear that both Milosevic and Karadzic were on the same page generally in seeking a Greater Serbia, a thread running throughout the Prosecution case against Milosevic in his case. Milosevic denied it in his trial since it was nothing but NATO propaganda.. Both Karadzic and Milosevic wanted to preserve the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as much as possible. That was their goal, not to create a Greater Serbia by ethnically cleansing non-Serb areas in the republics which had split off from the Federal Republic. But that is the mantra still chanted in the Karadzic case and the thesis of the prosecution case is that this alleged desire to create a Greater Serbia, was a joint criminal enterprise and, that from this ambition, all the crimes they allege against them were the consequence.. I will not go deeply into the concept of joint criminal enterprise since it is a concept unknown to law anywhere in the world and is an invention by the prosecution of ...

Epidemiology of Oral Cavity and Pharyngeal CancersOral cavity and pharyngeal cancers (OCPc) encompass malignancies arising in variety of anatomical subsites and are homogeneous regarding epidemiology, clinical presentation, associated risk factors and treatment modalities (Robinson and Macfarlane, 2003; Conway et al., 2006). Worldwide, they are the sixth most common type of cancer, with an estimated 529,500 new cases and 292,300 deaths globally during 2012, accounting for 3,8% of all cancer cases and 3,6% of cancer deaths (Shield et al., 2017; Ferlay et al., 2015). The regions with the highest incidence of OCPc include South and Southeast Asia (India, Pakistan, Shri Lanka), Eastern and Western Europe (Hungary, Slovakia, France, Portugal), Latin America (Brazil, Uruguay, Puerto Riko) and the Pacific (Papua New Guinea) (Warnakulasuriya 2009; Chaturvedi et al.,2013; Weatherspoon et al., 2015). OCPc are the eighth most common cancers among the European countries with an incidence of 73,856 new cases and
European plum (Prunus domestica L.) is a significant commercial crop in Serbia in terms of total fruit production, and it is traditionally processed into slivovitz brandy. The annual plum yields in Serbia is strongly affected by Monilinia laxa, causing brown rot in stone fruits. The fungal communities associated with leaves and fruits of four local Serbian plum cultivars (Požegača, Ranka, Lepotica and Rodna) were investigated in two phenological stages during early (May) and late (July) fruit maturation. Alpha diversity indices showed that fungal communities were heterogeneous and Beta diversity indicated that autochthonous fungal communities depended upon seasonal changes and the cultivars themselves. The phylum Ascomycota was the most abundant in all samples, with relative abundance (RA) between 46% in the Požegača cultivar (May) and 89% in the Lepotica cultivar (July). The most abundant genus for all plum cultivars in May was Aureobasidium, with RA from 19.27 to 33.69%, followed by ...

Material and Methods: 3 patients (2 men and1 women, aged 31 to 47 yrs.) having devitalized fractured teeth with infrabony lack of a part of root-dentin substance were selected for fabrication of fixed restoration. ¾ of root filling were removed in root canal preparations. Mock-up of cores was formed directly in the mouths using self-curing resin (Palavit G, Kultzer, Germany) Bounding surface and borders were prepared in resin material as a shoulder surface of core in supragingival i.e. subgingival areas of dentin-root defects, using retraction cord (Ultrapack #1 and #2, U.S.A.), but as the form of chamfer respecting remained coronal surface of devitalized teeth. After casting, 4 cores made of precious alloys (Golden alloy type III, Zlatara Majdanpek; M-Palador cast, Galenika, Serbia) were decidedly polished and cemented, using normal-set zinc-phosphate cement (Cegal-N, Galenika, Serbia). Temporary crowns were not positioned onto cemented cores and these teeth. After finishing of bounding ...

To examine the prognosis of patients who present with very advanced HIV-induced immunodeficiency, and their response to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), a series of 101 treatment naïve patients from the Serbian cohort of HIV infected patients, who presented with a CD4 count of ≤ 50/µL before commencing HAART, was retrospectively analyzed and factors influencing response to HAART and survival investigated. After a mean of three years (range 1-9) of treatment with PI-based and/or NNRTI-based regimens, a favorable response was achieved in 54.5% of the patients, treatment failure occurred in 13.9%, while 31.7% had a dissociative immunological/virological response. The overall estimated survival was eight years. Achievement of undetectable viremia during treatment appeared life saving (OR = 42.5, 95% CI 7.1 - 251.9, P = 0.000, as was a rise in CD4 cell count to over 200/μL (OR = 6.4, 95% CI 1.2- 31.8, P = 0.023). However, undetectable viremia was the single predictor of longer ...
DIV Trades Ltd. was founded by Zoran Knezevic in Celarevo, Serbia, 1996. The activities of the company during the first two years was sales of paper. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder, still somewhat poorly understood by science, which causes sudden and unpredictable hair loss. It usually begins as a round patch, and can spread to the entire hair (alopecia totalis) or cause complete loss of body hair (alopecia universalis). There is still no single therapy, and the results of treatment are largely unpredictable. The most commonly applied therapies, which are relatively successful, are very expensive and must be repeated, and so many patients suffering from this type of hair loss cannot afford it. The Foundation provides free diagnosis and therapy for patients suffering from alopecia areata, so that we can attempt to restore the lost hair.. If you want to be placed on our list of patients needing any of the procedures that the Foundation can provide, please contact us at [email protected] You can read about the experience of one patient whose treatment was provided for via our ...
Migszol November update (December 22, 2016): The border policy of the Hungarian government has been successful in closing the border to most people seeking international protection. In the late 1980s this struggle reached a climax as Slobodan Milosevic, now President of Yugoslavia, played the Kosova card in his rise to power in Serbia. He turned the eyes of the Serbs to the south, to their medieval heartland, and fueled the fires of nationalism with a call for a return to Serbian hegemony over Kosova. His ideological campaign climaxed in March of 1989 when a new constitution was adopted in Kosova, ending fifteen years of nominal autonomy within the Republic of Serbia.

Single sequence repeats (SSR) developed for Sorghum bicolor were used to characterize the genetic distance of 46 different Sorghum halepense (Johnsongrass) accessions from Argentina some of which have evolved toward glyphosate resistance. Since Johnsongrass is an allotetraploid and only one subgenome is homologous to cultivated sorghum, some SSR loci amplified up to two alleles while others (presumably more conserved loci) amplified up to four alleles. Twelve SSR providing information of 24 loci representative of Johnsongrass genome were selected for genetic distance characterization. All of them were highly polymorphic, which was evidenced by the number of different alleles found in the samples studied, in some of them up to 20. UPGMA and Mantel analysis showed that Johnsongrass glyphosate-resistant accessions that belong to different geographic regions do not share similar genetic backgrounds. In contrast, they show closer similarity to their neighboring susceptible counterparts. Discriminant ...

Background: Adult height can be a marker of living conditions in early life. The aim of this study was to assess relationship between adult stature, overweight and central obesity in Backa and Banat - Vojvodina (Serbia). 4,504 adults, average age 40.62 ± 10.74, were tested. Methodology: The analysis of differences in morphological variables, BMI, WHR in stature, age and educational groups was carried out using t-test and chi-square test. Models of logistic regression were used to estimate the risk (OR; 95% CI) of obesity in different stature groups. Results: This study showed that education was a significant factor that influences stature. Most short stature subjects had primary education. The highest percentage of those with university-level education was in the tall stature group. Among men, short stature did not correlate with overweight/obesity while a smaller correlation was observed in relation to central adiposity. It, however, had a more marked influence among women. Short stature women ...
This page by Seán Williams]. Melinda Nadj Abonji. Melinda Nadj Abonji was born in 1968 in a Hungarian minority community in the Vojvodina, which at the time was part of Yugoslavia and now lies within Serbia. She moved to Switzerland with her parents in 1973, going on to study in Zurich before she began to write and become a musician. Nadj Abonji rose to prominence as an author in 2010, when she won both the Swiss and the German Book Awards - for her second novel, Tauben fliegen auf (pigeons fly away). It is a lyrical work of long sentences, and yet a book with political punch - though little plot.. Tauben fliegen auf is in part a story of relations across three generations of the Kocsis family (a Familienroman or Generationenroman). In part it is about fragmented memories - of childhood holidays spent with extended family in the homeland, as well as memories of trauma during the regime changes in the region, from fascism to nationalism via communism, and passed down as stories from ...
