CITP addressed a comprehensive suite of topics and areas of research need. These efforts yielded invaluable information, tools, and technologies to improve environmental performance and foster conservation, prosperity, and resilience in the coastal areas of Texas. This months featured project was carried out by researchers at The Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University - Kingsville under the direction of Dr. David B. Wester, Professor and Research Scientist. The project focused on ways to improve site restoration practices for oilfield projects such as well pad and pipeline construction by studying topsoil stockpiles created during construction activity.. At the outset of construction activity such as well pad preparation or pipeline trenching, topsoil is usually stripped and stockpiled for later use in restoration. During trench excavation, valuable topsoil is usually separated from subsoil material. Even so, the topsoil and subsoil can become mixed, disrupting soil ...

Biomass harvesting refers to harvesting where more woody material is gathered than in a traditional sawtimber harvesting. Material down to four inches in diameter is harvested along with large trees for veneer logs and saw logs. Small trees and tops are chipped and used for paper pulp and boiler fuel.. During October of 2012, a biomass harvesting project was started by harvesting a 100 acre tract of hardwood timber at the Southeastern Purdue Ag Center (SEPAC). The tract was divided into several treatment areas demonstrating various forms of harvesting including traditional clearcutting, biomass harvesting, and areas left uncut. The goal of this project was twofold: to determine the volume and value of the products produced using biomass harvesting compared to the traditional methods, and to gain a more thorough understanding of what happens to a harvest site following biomass harvesting when restoration practices are used.. The harvest site has experienced a rapid recovery of new vegetation. ...
Should I Prune My Sequoia?. The two species of sequoia are the largest trees in the world. Sequoia trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum) grow to approximately 300 feet. These giant trees may live to be 3,000 years old. Also known as sierra redwood trees, sequoias make useful trees in windbreaks and screens. These big trees, native to California, thrive in moist, well-drained soils. Although sequoias grow ...

Speaking of redwood trees, the photo to the right shows Dan Czederpiltz and I with a very large coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens. This particular tree is in Big Hendy Grove in Mendocino County, near the Navarro River. The coast redwood is restricted to a fog belt along the coast of California, from southern Monterrey County to just north of the Oregon border. It is an extremely long lived tree (up to 2,200 years) and one of the tallest trees. According to allref.com, the record coast redwood tree is 364 feet (110 m) in height and 20 feet (6.1 m) diameter at breast height (dbh, the standard place of measurement for tree width). Compare the coast redwood with the giant redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum), also known as the bigtree. Although not as tall (up to 310 ft, or 95 m in height), the giant redwood can have a much larger diameter, up to 35 feet or 11 m dbh. The giant redwood, restricted to about 75 groves in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern California, is thus much more massive than ...
Giant sequoias are in many ways adapted to forest fires. Their bark is unusually fire resistant, and their cones will normally open immediately after a fire.[12] The giant sequoias are having difficulty reproducing in their original habitat (and very rarely reproduce in cultivation) due to the seeds only being able to grow successfully in full sun and in mineral-rich soils, free from competing vegetation. Although the seeds can germinate in moist needle humus in the spring, these seedlings will die as the duff dries in the summer. They therefore require periodic wildfire to clear competing vegetation and soil humus before successful regeneration can occur. Without fire, shade-loving species will crowd out young sequoia seedlings, and sequoia seeds will not germinate. When fully grown, these trees typically require large amounts of water and are therefore often concentrated near streams.. Fires also bring hot air high into the canopy via convection, which in turn dries and opens the cones. The ...
Members of Araucariaceae are typically very tall evergreen trees,[4] reaching heights of 60 m (200 ft) or more.[5] They can also grow very large stem diameters; a New Zealand kauri tree (Agathis australis) named Tāne Mahuta ("The Lord of the Forest") has been measured at 45.2 m (148 ft) tall with a diameter at breast height of 491 cm (16.11 ft). Its total wood volume is calculated to be 516.7 m3 (18,250 cu ft),[6] making it the third-largest conifer after Sequoia and Sequoiadendron (both from the Cupressaceae subfamily Sequoioideae).[4] The trunks are columnar and have relatively large piths with resinous cortices.[7] The branching is usually horizontal and tiered, arising regularly in whorls of three to seven branches or alternating in widely separated pairs.[8] The leaves can be small, needle-like, and curved, or they can be large, broadly ovate, and flattened.[9] They are spirally arranged, persistent, and usually have parallel venation.[4] Like other conifers, they produce cones. Each tree ...

Sequoia Voting Systems has become the first electronic voting machine maker to publish the source code used in one of its systems, a move that computer scientists have praised.. On Monday, the Denver, Colorado company released the first batch of code for Frontier, an end-to-end e-voting system that it plans to begin selling in the near future. Sequoia has promised to release the blueprints for 100 per cent of its system software, including firmware, before the system is submitted for federal certification in June.. To be sure, the initial installment is fairly mundane: code written in Microsofts C# programming language that acts as a desktop publishing program of sorts for controlling the layout of a ballot. But the move represents a seismic shift in strategy for Sequoia, which in the past has gone to great lengths to keep third parties from reviewing the inner workings of its machines.. "They completely reversed their viewpoint from a viewpoint that was very much closed source to a viewpoint ...

Background/Question/Methods. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can improve restoration outcomes by facilitating establishment of native plants. Yet, we know little about the effects of restoration methods on AM fungal communities. We examined how herbicide application and mowing (with thatch removal) of invasive Brassica nigra (black mustard) or adding topsoil from a reference ecosystem (i.e., salvage topsoil) might alter AM abundance and fungal communities in a coastal sage scrubland. Black mustard is a non-mycorrhizal plant that produces chemicals which may inhibit AM fungi. Removing mustard plants and burying mustard seeds via the addition of salvage topsoil, which includes AM propagules, AM host-plant seeds, and organic matter, could potentially improve AM growth and diversity. However, some restoration practices, such as stockpiling salvage topsoil or removing thatch might harm AM fungi. Indeed, removing thatch may expose soil surfaces to increased solar radiation and stockpiling salvage ...
Cattle exclusion fencing has been recommended as a best management practice for the control of sediment, phosphorus, and nitrogen pollution in agricultural streams for several decades. The effectiveness of this practice for water quality improvement is varied. This review summarizes the findings of seventeen water quality studies where monitoring extended for up to 5 years. In general, cattle exclusion fencing decreased TSS and TP. The effect on dissolved forms of nutrients is more tenuous. Grazing cattle impact streams by damaging stream banks, kicking up streambed sediment, directly defecating into the water, and increasing polluted runoff risk in riparian areas. Improved study design and stream restoration practices may aid in increasing the understanding of the connection between riparian ecosystem recovery and water quality ...
The coast redwood DNA came from a tree at Butano State Park in San Mateo County. The giant sequoia DNA came from a tree in Sequoia National Park.. The ancient species have odd, large and uniquely challenging genetics.. Redwood trees genomes are 10 times larger than the human genome, said Neale. The coast redwood is especially tricky, with six sets of large chromosomes. Humans only have two sets.. In 2014, Neale conducted a pilot effort to prove that sequencing the redwood genome was feasible. Then his team produced a preliminary sequence for the coast redwood that is serving as the foundation for the project.. Recent innovations in sequencing technologies make the project possible, he said.. For many years, DNA was sequenced by a method that was developed in 1975 and used to sequence the first human genome in 2003, at a cost of at least $500 million.. Now so-called "next generation sequencing" technologies have made the process faster and cheaper.. The first phase of the sequencing project, ...

Ive already explained my issues with Petrified Forest, but Capitol Reef and Sequoia make the list for far different reasons. Matt and I drove through Capitol Reef without even realizing it - we were too busy looking for the Capitol-like dome that we never saw. Ive heard theres some good hiking to be had in the park, and theres was an interesting looking orchard just outside the gates, but after visiting Bryce, Zion and Death Valley, perhaps were too hard to impress. Sequoia makes our list of disappointments only because we drove six hours to reach it and didnt see a single Sequoia. Sadly, we failed to fully research our trip and didnt realize that the only access road through the centre of the park (you know, the bit with all the giant trees) would still be closed in mid-April. Sadly, the Ranger we spoke with at the visitors center didnt think to mention this fact either. Bummer. Im sure the trees are impressive but, sadly, we may never get to see them. Top tip: Please, please, check ...
