Conference on Coast Redwood Forest Ecology and Management June 18-20, 1996
Note: This information is formatted for an 80 character screen in Courier or Monaco font Conference on Coast Redwood Forest Ecology and Management June 18-20, 1996 Humboldt State University The coast redwood forest type is unique to northern California and southwest Oregon. Society values the broad spectrum of natural resources inherent in the coast redwood forest including: natural history, wood products, aesthetics, and a rich diversity of plants and animals. The amount of published work on coast redwood forests, however, has not matched the interest of this unique resource. The conference on Coast Redwood Forest Ecology and Management is the first of its kind for the region. The plenary sessions will summarize existing knowledge about the coast redwood forest ecosystem, review social and human perspectives, and examine past and current forest management. Technical papers and posters will present the latest research on watershed processes, forest ecology and management, silvicultural systems, ...
Sequoia Research - Yosemite National Park (U.S. National Park Service)
Giant sequoias are the third longest-lived tree species with the oldest known specimen to have been 3,266 years old in the Converse Basin Grove of Giant Sequoia National Monument. (Note: Giant sequoias are only outlived by bristlecone pines-oldest aged at 4,844 years in the Great Basin-and by Alerce trees-oldest aged at 3,639 years in Chile.) Yosemites famous Grizzly Giant in the parks Mariposa Grove is best estimated to be about 3,000 years old plus or minus a few centuries, which is nothing to a giant sequoia.. Scientists currently rank the Grizzy Giants large size, or volume, as No. 25. (The largest by volume is the General Sherman tree in Sequoia National Park.) Remember that the largest giant sequoias, like the Grizzly Giant, often owe their size to rapid growth rather than age, so an old giant sequoia will not necessarily be the largest specimen.. Sequoia sempervirens - Plant Finder
Sequoia sempervirens, called coast redwood, is so named because it is native to moist, foggy, coastal plain areas along the Pacific coast, now being primarily confined to a narrow coastal belt (to 20 miles inland) extending from southern Oregon south to the San Francisco Bay area. This is a narrow-conical, evergreen conifer that is typically found, sometimes in magnificent pure strands, in high moisture coastal areas that are regularly blanketed with fog rolling in from the Pacific. In this native habitat, it is a magnificent, long-lived tree that is generally considered to be the tallest tree in the world, growing to 350 with a trunk diameter of 20-25. Although fast-growing in its native habitat, it still may take 400+ years for a redwood to reach maturity. But, it can live to 2000 years or more. In cultivation outside of its native habitat, it will grow much smaller, typically to 60-90 tall. Coast redwood features flat, bright green needles (to 1 long), oblong seed cones to 1.25 long and ...
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on Giant sequoia
Giant sequoias are in many ways adapted to forest fires. Their bark is unusually fire resistant, and their cones will normally open immediately after a fire.[12] The giant sequoias are having difficulty reproducing in their original habitat (and very rarely reproduce in cultivation) due to the seeds only being able to grow successfully in full sun and in mineral-rich soils, free from competing vegetation. Although the seeds can germinate in moist needle humus in the spring, these seedlings will die as the duff dries in the summer. They therefore require periodic wildfire to clear competing vegetation and soil humus before successful regeneration can occur. Without fire, shade-loving species will crowd out young sequoia seedlings, and sequoia seeds will not germinate. When fully grown, these trees typically require large amounts of water and are therefore often concentrated near streams.. Fires also bring hot air high into the canopy via convection, which in turn dries and opens the cones. The ...

Sequoia opens kimono with e-voting code handout • The Register
Sequoia Voting Systems has become the first electronic voting machine maker to publish the source code used in one of its systems, a move that computer scientists have praised.. On Monday, the Denver, Colorado company released the first batch of code for Frontier, an end-to-end e-voting system that it plans to begin selling in the near future. Sequoia has promised to release the blueprints for 100 per cent of its system software, including firmware, before the system is submitted for federal certification in June.. To be sure, the initial installment is fairly mundane: code written in Microsofts C# programming language that acts as a desktop publishing program of sorts for controlling the layout of a ballot. But the move represents a seismic shift in strategy for Sequoia, which in the past has gone to great lengths to keep third parties from reviewing the inner workings of its machines.. They completely reversed their viewpoint from a viewpoint that was very much closed source to a viewpoint ...

Caulorhiza umbonata, the rooting redwood mushroom. Tom Volks Fungus of the Month for January 2004
Speaking of redwood trees, the photo to the right shows Dan Czederpiltz and I with a very large coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens. This particular tree is in Big Hendy Grove in Mendocino County, near the Navarro River. The coast redwood is restricted to a fog belt along the coast of California, from southern Monterrey County to just north of the Oregon border. It is an extremely long lived tree (up to 2,200 years) and one of the tallest trees. According to allref.com, the record coast redwood tree is 364 feet (110 m) in height and 20 feet (6.1 m) diameter at breast height (dbh, the standard place of measurement for tree width). Compare the coast redwood with the giant redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum), also known as the bigtree. Although not as tall (up to 310 ft, or 95 m in height), the giant redwood can have a much larger diameter, up to 35 feet or 11 m dbh. The giant redwood, restricted to about 75 groves in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern California, is thus much more massive than ...
Nothing Like a Sequoia to Make You Feel Young - Garden Betty
Every year, I like to get out of town for my birthday. Last year, the hubs and I headed down to our surf shack in Baja. The year before that, we hiked and hot tubbed in the wilderness around Florence Lake. And the year before that, we trekked through the snow in the Mammoth Basin.. This year? After an exhausting five months of cooking, shooting, and writing, I didnt even want to think about organizing an outing. I was very much content with bumming on the beach with a beer in hand, and had planned to do so up until two days before we decided to drive up to Sequoia National Forest.. As a California resident for the last 12-plus years, I couldnt believe that I hadnt made it to the sequoia groves yet. Id driven through the park many times on my way up to Kings Canyon or down to Kern River, and had heard of giant trees you could drive through and bears that freely roamed the roadside, but since it was right in my backyard, so to speak, I always set aside the trip for one day. Itll still be ...

Wayburn: A voice for the wilderness - SFGate
DR. EDGAR WAYBURN, prime mover in creating the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, has devoted most of his 92 years to efforts to preserve the worlds wild areas and to enhance the environment for future generations. In spotlighting his achievements, President Clinton is also underscoring the critical importance of environmental conservation in an era of scarce water, warming climates, sprawling populations, overcrowded parks, disintegrating habitats and declining species. The Wayburns were so captivated by the glories of the Alaskan landscape that he devoted a generous share of his life to preserving its majestic vistas, lofty mountains and free-flowing rivers. In the 1960s, the very notion of an urban national park was an alien concept to Congress and the National Park Service; but thanks to the tireless labors of Burton and Wayburn, along with the support of the local community and local environmentalists, the GGNRA finally emerged in 1972. Within its boundaries are redwood forests, beaches,
Pyramid: GURPS Dinosaurs Designers Notes
Carruthers swore profusely and unimaginatively as he trudged across the floodplain. It had cost him a small fortune in bribes to smuggle his grandfathers Kalashnikov back to the Cretaceous, and he was sure that smuggling his trophies home would cost more still assuming he got any. He hadnt seen any dinosaurs much larger than a turkey since his arrival, and all of those had escaped into the wetlands. The longer he took to bag a dinosaur, he knew, the more likely the Timecops were to catch him with the evidence. The weather was colder than hed expected, most of the plants and small animals hed seen had looked suspiciously modern, and he suspected that the insects were rapidly evolving a strain immune to his Pestguard. But his scanner indicated many large animals on the far side of the redwood forest ahead of him, so he tramped onwards. An hour later, he was staring at a huge herd of elephant-sized Triceratops horridus as they migrated south. From the side, they were dark gray mottled with ...

What you take on a hike largely depends on the kind of terrain youre hiking, the length of the hike, the weather conditions and time of year. Whether its a summer hike in Joshua Tree or a fall hike in Sequoia, there are some essentials youll need every time.. Water - The importance of water cannot be overstated, even on short hikes. Since you sweat anywhere from ½ to 1 quart of fluid every hour in the heat, youll need enough water to replenish what you lose. Two liters is enough for a day hike.. Maps - Having a trail book or topographical map will help ensure you know where you are at all times. A compass is also helpful and can make it easier to follow the map.. Sun Protection - If youre going to be out in the open, exposed to the sun, be sure not to forget sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and even lip balm.. Food - Take snacks that provide high energy such as dried fruit, granola, peanut butter, power bars, fruit bars, trail mix and beef jerky. Youll need at least 300 calories an hour, and ...

It is true that centrifugal force on earth has its counterpart in centripetal force, in gravity, but it would be pure foolishness to presume that centrifugal force -- i.e., fleeing away from the center of mass -- holds the wheat-stalk upright, or allows trees to dance lithely in the air, or causes millions of other plants, grasses and climbing vines to writhe ecstatically toward the heavens. Human ingenuity cannot produce the miracle of the wheat-stalk, the spiralling morning glory vine, or a massive sequoia tree. In terms of engineering these are living design miracles that defy both gravity and mechanical law. Nothing constructed by human skill could be so supple and yet so stable. Constructed on terrestrial principles, the wheat stalk is nevertheless incapable of standing tall and steady due to terrestrial laws alone. It needs the co-emergence of Andromedan physics. The plant-world on earth mirrors the physics of beauty, the aesthetic laws that prevail on Andromeda. Van Goghs sunflowers grow ...

a. Ease of rooting is a general property of juvenile compared to adult growth. b. Even though a scion from a mature tree tends to retain its adult growth phase. As pointed out in the previous section, an adult scion will be slightly rejuvenated by grafting onto a juvenile (seedling) understock. Because this rejuvenating effect is only slight a scion may have to be sequentially regrafted onto a series of juvenile rootstocks before a useful degree of rejuvenation has been achieved. Cuttings taken from this rejuvenated growth tend to root more easily than from mature growth.. c. This rootstock-influenced gradual rejuvenation of the scion is called serial grafting. d. Serial grafting is an extreme (last resort) method for facilitating the rooting of cuttings from the mature wood of extremely difficult-to-root species such as 100 year-old Sequoia ( ...

Presidents inspire round of drinks - Washington Times
Other presidents, he notes, overimbibed or changed favorites as the pace of time changed. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson, for instance, favored Cutty & branch from his Navy days, a mix of Scotch and water, but going from Austin to the ranch was a six-pack ride. It was longtime former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger who wrote about former President Richard M. Nixons fondness for scotch, but Mr. Nixon is listed at the Willard as serving up Bacardi rum and Cokes for guests on the Sequoia, the presidential yacht, and also for storing wines in the vault at New Yorks 21 Club. Among the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson is credited in Mr. Hewes research with liking meritage, which Mr. Hewes describes in an interview as a blended quality red wine, a kind of claret because, as he writes, our third president learned to love French wine while in Paris in the 1780s. He matches George Washington with Madeira wine, especially Malmsey, a fortified wine from that Mediterranean island, ...

Our current research focuses on the potential of TUUS in therapy guidance during transperineal interstitial permanent prostate brachytherapy (TIPPB). TUUS may complement or potentially replace x-ray fluoroscopy and TRUS in providing data for determining the prostate boundary and radiation source locations. Prostate boundary detection and source localization using TUUS were tested on an ultrasound-equivalent prostate phantom and in a patient during TIPPB. Data collection was conducted with a 10 French, 10 MHz ultrasound catheter controlled by an Acuson Sequoia™ ...

With this perk, you can repair items based on category instead of type. For example, you can repair the rare Ranger Sequoia with the common .357 magnum revolver. The same goes for armor and clothing as well. There are a total of thirteen categories of weapons that the perk will enable repairing within: unarmed, one-handed melee, two-handed melee, energy pistols, energy rifles (laser), energy rifles (other), energy weapons (heavy), one-handed guns, two-handed automatic guns, bolt/lever-action guns, miniguns, grenade launchers and missile launchers. Likewise, clothing can be used to repair each other within their category (light, medium, heavy). Finally, almost all headgear can be repaired with any other headgear. Weapons are categorized, to some extent, by the method in which they are fired. For example, an anti-materiel rifle cannot be repaired by a sniper rifle, because the sniper rifle is a semi-automatic firearm. The anti-materiel rifle can be fixed by weapons such as the hunting rifle, since ...

CiteSeerX - Understanding Soft Error Resiliency of BlueGene/Q Compute Chip through Hardware Proton Irradiation and Software...
CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): Abstract-Soft Error Resiliency is a major concern for Pet-ascale high performance computing (HPC) systems. Blue Gene/Q (BG/Q) is the third generation of IBMs massively parallel, ener-gy efficient Blue Gene series of supercomputers. The principal goal of this work is to understand the interaction between Blue-Gene/Qs hardware resiliency features and high-performance applications through proton irradiation of a real chip, and soft-ware resiliency inherent in these applications through applica-tion-level fault injection (AFI) experiments. From the proton irradiation experiments we derived that the mean time between correctable errors at sea level of the SRAM-based register files and Level-1 caches for a system similar to the scale of Sequoia system. From the AFI experiments, we characterized relative vulnerability among the applications in both general purpose and floating point register files. We categorized and quantified the

Long term use of prednisone - Asean Breaking News
NEW DELHI: Soon after Snapdeal closed a $500-million (about Rs 3,300 crore) fundraising round led by Foxconn, Alibaba Group and SoftBank, another unlikely investor was making moves to acquire stakes in the ecommerce company. Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (Teachers), Canadas largest single-profession pension plan with an investment portfolio of over $152 billion, avoided the scramble to get on board Snapdeals rapidly expanding cap table. Instead, it acquired shares in Snapdeal from some of its investors, providing Saama Capital, Ebay and Sequoia Capital with complete or partial exits, a rare occurrence in the countrys consumer internet sector. The transaction was the only the first by a global pension fund in an Indian ecommerce company, highlighting the increasing attractiveness of the consumer internet sector even for long-term, conservative investors such as pension funds and endowments. These entities typically put their money in safe investment … [Read more...] about Searching for ...

Frosh Giants Win Pitchers Duel Against Marin Catholic | Redwood Baseball
5/2: The frosh Giants pushed across a single run late to defeat a game Marin Catholic squad by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Endriss Field.. Jake Zesiger started on the mound for the Giants and held MC scoreless through five innings. He was matched zero for zero by MC lefty Van Larson, who worked out of a few jams to keep Redwood off the board through the Giants first four at-bats.. In the bottom of the fifth, Bodie Jehling led off with a single to left and Charlie Ginsburg laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance him to second. After taking third on a wild pitch, Jehling scored on Ben Cohens sacrifice fly to center, and through five innings Redwood was up 1-0.. A terrific game took a dark turn in the top of the sixth when Zesiger suffered what all in attendance could see was a serious arm injury while throwing a pitch to MCs first batter of the inning. X-rays would later reveal a complete fracture of the humerus bone in Zesigers throwing arm. It was a sad ending to a great season ...

Mountain laurel
The mountain laurel are close to bloom throughout the county. Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is an evergreen shrub that naturally occurs on dry upland sites where the soils have a low, acidic pH. Mountain laurel often grow in dense groves along the east slope of Catoctin Mountain or other dry sites. The laurel has a single stem and more of a tree shape in the south; in Maryland, and northward, it looks more like a shrub with multiple stems. The sap of this plant is poisonous to many animals and quite flammable so that the plants can cause very dangerous flare ups during forest fires. Many ornamental varieties of Mountain laurel have been developed since it is a very deer resistant plant. However, this plant needs drier, well-drained sites with acid soils to grow well. Also, this plant should. It be placed too close to a house since it is very flammable. The blooms should be on these trees for a few more weeks. ...

North Coast Regional Manufacturers Network & Directory - Redwood Coast Rural Action
Activities will build on successes and link efforts to develop integrated career pathways, develop innovative apprenticeship programs, and increase the regional capacity for innovation through the long term development of regional technology centers, rapid prototyping capability, and entrepreneurial support systems.. Why is this important?. Domestic manufacturing revenues in California and throughout the rest of the country are often lost to other countries economies when the good or service is imported. The Redwood area is not immune from such economic realities, and has identified targets of opportunity to increase reliance on non-imported goods. The initiative fills in the import gaps within three targeted industriesNiche Manufacturing (small, specialized firms and some of the infrastructure manufacturers that support them)Forest Products (a mature, heavily concentrated mix of businesses), and Specialty Agriculture, which includes food, flowers, and beverages.. Acarodomatia - Plant Parasites of Europe
The word acarodomatium means something akin to house for mites. The term is used for structures in plant leaves that seem to have been developed to enable mites to withdraw, or even establish. The best known acarodomatia are the hair bundles in the axils of lateral veins, like for instance in Lime. Thick veins can be widened to form a sort of side shelter (often in Hawthon), or intricate flaps (like in laurel leaves, look in the kitchen). The assumption is that the acarodomatia are advantageous for plants because they especially harbour predatory mites, that hunt for spider mites and young stages of insects like thrips. It appears that also vacated mines play a role as acarodomatia, because when opening an old mine very often mites are seen inside.. An interesting aside is that also gall mites, Eriophyidae, now and then may profit from the presence of mines. In the blotches of Phyllonorycter platani on London Plane a specialised gall mite has been discovered that within the protection of the ...
