Speed, Accuracy, and Comprehension of Adolescent Braille Readers in a Specialized School, Online, Abstract: All 30 adolescent braille readers at the Tennessee School for the Blind were interviewed using a questionnaire developed by the authors, and their reading rates, accuracy, and comprehension were determined via the Gilmore Oral Reading Test. The questionnaire tapped information on onset of blindness, early reading experiences, service delivery systems, cause of blindness, and acceptance and use of braille. The most important factor related to braille reading speed was age of onset of blindness. No direct relationships were found between reading speed and comprehension or reading speed and reading for pleasure in braille.

Tunnel vision syndrome - What is tunnel vision? Loss of peripheral. In tunnel vision, the peripheral portions of the retina lose their sensitivity and only the central portion remains (a tunnel straight ahead). Most often found in inherited degenerations like retinitis pigmentosa, some drugs can do this as well as rare retiinal infections. Advanced tunnel vision is very handicapping as victims cannot see their feet, or objects in view.
That is the question people often ask when having a document transcribed into braille. They are surprised to learn that a simple one page print document can result in many more pages than they expected when it is produced in braille. To find the answer to this question one needs to understand a bit about the idea behind braille.. Braille is a system of raised dots for blind users to read printed material. It is based on a concept similar to Morse code. The dots are arranged in groups or cells. Each cell in braille contains six or eight dots (depending on the country of origin). The dots are arranged in two columns of three (or four) dots each. American and British braille use a six-dot system with each cell being equal to a 29 point font character in print - approximately .4 inches high and .25 inches wide. The size of the dots is standardized and cannot be changed, unlike print fonts that can easily be adjusted with the click of a mouse.. A page of paper used for braille embossing is wider than ...

Tunnel Vision was a Brunel200 commission and collaboration between Luke Jerram and composer Dan Jones.. In the 1/2km long dissused railway tunnel of Stapelhill Bristol, Tunnel Vision was a fusion of architecture, candlelight, surround sound and the visiting public. A vast array of speakers were mounted in the ceiling of the 8m high tunnel, lit at night by over 500 candles.. Considering the problems faced by Brunel with his failing project the Atmospheric Railway the artwork aimed to evoke the imagery experienced in worry and problem solving as he lay in bed at night on the edge of sleep. An atmosphere of the industrial age was created with sound and a beautiful sense of loss was described through music. Through the use of surround sound, trains appeared to move along the length of the disused railway track passing through any visitors present.. ...

In general, only the assignments of the basic 26 letters of the French alphabet are retained in other braille alphabets. For example, among the additional letters, in German Braille only ü and ö coincide with French Braille. However, there are several alphabets which are much more closely related. Italian Braille is identical to the French apart from doubling up French Braille ò to Italian ó and ò, since French has no ó. Indeed, a principal difference of these alphabets is the remapping of French vowels with a grave accent (à è ì ò ù) to an acute accent (á é í ó ú), as the French alphabet does not support acute accents apart from é. Spanish changes all five of these vowels, as well as taking ü. Portuguese Braille is also very similar to the French, though the shift of grave to acute accents necessitated a chain of other changes, such as circumflex to grave, and the Portuguese tildes were taken from French diaereses (Portuguese ã õ for French ä ö/œ). The continental ...

by Fredric F. Schroeder. The following is an excerpt from an address delivered at the annual conference of the California Transcribers and Educators of the Visually Handicapped, March 14, 1992, by Fred Schroeder, then Director of the New Mexico Commission for the Blind and President of the International Council on English Braille and now Commissioner of the U.S. Rehabilitation Services Administration. Dr. Schroeder is one of the most knowledgeable and influential figures in the field of work with the blind. Here in part is what he said to teachers and Braille transcribers in the spring of 1992; it is still relevant:. Much is happening nationally and internationally concerning Braille. Certainly we live in a time when it is getting more emphasis, which has resulted in greater availability and increased attention to instruction. We must recognize what is cause and what effect. When discussing Braille, it is easy to focus on the changes that have taken place. But all of this increased attention is ...
When on an edit field, you can switch to the Talkback braille keyboard by selecting the Next Keyboard, or switch keyboard icon, depending on what keyboard you are using. This icon is typically located at the bottom right corner of the screen. Once you select this, locate Talkback Braille Keyboard. The first time you load this, you will be presented with a tutorial. It is recommended you try this tutorial if you are a first time user. As mentioned above, the iOS and Talkback braille keyboards are quite similar. All the editing commands such as deleting words, characters, adding spaces and new lines are exactly the same gestures. There are a few minor differences here. For instance, to re-calibrate the dots, press and hold all six of your fingers on the screen for three seconds until you hear, dot positions activated. You can also use Table top and screen away mode on Android, but you cannot lock the orientation with a gesture. You must goe into the Talkback settings under Braille ...

Barriers to Low Vision Rehabilitation: A Qualitative Approach, Online, Structured Abstract: Introduction: This study sought to describe and better understand barriers to accessing low vision rehabilitation services. Methods: A qualitative description research paradigm was employed. Focus group participants were recruited through their involvement in the Montreal Barriers Study in Montreal, Canada. Six focus groups (n = 21 participants) were conducted to assess perspectives (both positive and negative) about accessing low vision rehabilitation services, and in particular the barriers to accessing these services. Interview transcripts were prepared and analyzed using content analysis. Results: Analyses revealed barriers inherent to the person (perceived ability to comfortably engage in activities of daily living and gradual participatory losses); the clinic (inefficiencies in educating clientele about low vision rehabilitation services, and problems and dissatisfaction associated with ophthalmic
Low vision rehabilitation research is a quickly growing area, due in part to the increase in the demand for services geared at older adults with age-related vision loss. Various professions collaborate to provide such rehabilitation services; however, it is currently unclear which profession takes the leading role in advancing the frontiers of low vision rehabilitation research. A recent review article proposed that in Canada, this role is held by physicians. The present study was conducted to replicate these findings under conditions of a systematic review ...

Our team is interested in what can be done to improve the functioning of patients who suffer from glaucoma, a chronic and irreversible eye disease. Patients with vision loss as a result of this disease may feel like they have been given up on, or lost to our medical system when no further interventions can be offered to treat their eye disease. It is our intent to investigate what alternatives we can provide our patients, instead of simply saying, nothing more can be done. We have learned from studies done on other chronic eye diseases, like age related macular degeneration, that low vision rehabilitation can improve visual function.. What exactly is low vision? It can involve a loss of visual acuity, making activities such as reading or writing a challenge; it can involve loss of contrast sensitivity, making shapes and edges hard to discern, like those of a stair edge, or persons face. It could also involve a loss of peripheral, or side vision which is a symptom common to most glaucoma ...

Purpose : One in three vision impaired older adults has subclinical symptoms of depression and/or anxiety and is at risk of full blown psychiatric disorders. This puts a burden on quality of life of patients and on societal resources. Recently our stepped-care program proved to be effective in preventing development of disorders (relative risk: 0.63), however, evidence of cost-effectiveness is not yet available. We performed an economic evaluation alongside a multicenter randomized clinical trial to investigate the cost-effectiveness from a societal perspective of this new intervention to prevent depressive and/or anxiety disorders. Methods : Vision impaired adults (,50 years) having subclinical symptoms of depression and/or anxiety (mean age 74, 70% women, 46% macular degeneration) from 17 Dutch and Belgian low vision rehabilitation centers were randomized to stepped-care (n=131) or usual care (n=134). If symptoms persisted as assessed every three months, patients moved to the next more ...

Im thrilled to announce something new today that has nothing to do with Sparky the Music Theory Dog (though Im sure hed approve): Braille Music Notator, an online system Ive been working on since early last year. Its still in development - Im calling it an alpha version because there are still a few features Id like to add - but its at the point where I could use some more folks tinkering with it.. What is it? Well, there are a few utilities out there - free and otherwise - that will translate a music score from a program like Finale or Sibelius into braille music notation, and they work pretty well as far as automatic translation systems go. But even if a translation system is advanced enough to avoid sometimes hilarious mistranslations, the result still often feels clunky and inefficient.. The idea behind Braille Music Notator is to encourage us sighted folk to learn a little braille music - its really not that hard - so that we can create legible, well-designed braille scores from ...

Visual aids enable millions of people who suffer from low vision to be able to function and live relatively normal lives, by maximizing their remaining eyesight. An optometrist can do a low vision eye exam and provide specialized glasses or tints to optimize vision, or recommend quality magnifiers with appropriate magnification and working distance. Full spectrum lighting or magnifiers with an attached light source are often used to aid individuals with low vision. You can also get special lens tints, which are used to enhance contrast and reduce glare, with special coatings for specific conditions. Other low vision aids act as guides to help the person focus on non-visual cues, such as sound or feel. Many people unfortunately try a trial and error or dollar store readers or magnifiers when it comes to vision aids which can lead to frustration. In fact, there is a systematic approach. to finding the right visual aid, which is a matter of consulting with a professional to determine what works ...
