STIM! STIM! STIM! | RUN!RUN!RUN! International Body for Research
RUN! RUN! RUN!s take is that stimming is not (necessarily) a negative activity, and that exercises like running could itself be a form of stimming. Ie, running as a form of meditation and self-medication.. Many people engage in a range of stimming activities to calm themselves.. → What is stimming? Stimming is short for self-stimulation behaviours. RUN! RUN! RUN! takes the view that every body stims, although the neurotypical world calls it fidgeting. Pen-twirling. Pen-chewing. Nail-biting. Feet-tapping. Hair, playing-with.. → People on the autistic spectrum engage in these and other fidgety activities too. For RUN! RUN! RUN!, they are not necessarily good or bad. Aspies however are more advanced and have more creative ways of stimming.. → See a wondrous crowd-sourced list of stims here (the compulsion to compile such a list is itself stimming! ). → See examples of stim toys and jewellery, designed by an Aspie and made for Aspies. Cynthia Kim is also an author of a popular book and blog ...
Anticholenergic Influences upon Habituation to Electrical Brain Stimulation,
Habituation has been defined as a response decrement produced by repeated or continuous stimulation (Harris 1943). Cain and Carlson (1971) have demonstrated that a response induced by electrical brain stimulation (EBS) can habituate. Carlton (1963) suggested that the physiological basis of habituation was accumulation of acetylcholine at central cholenergic synapses and that the effects of this accumulation could be blocked by anticholenergic drugs such as scopolamine. The present experiment was designed to test Carltons hypothesis by determining the effect of scopolamine upon habituation of EBS-induced running. (Author)(*SCOPOLAMINE

Inverse reinforcement learning with locally consistent reward functions
Existing inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) algorithms have assumed each experts demonstrated trajectory to be produced by only a single reward function. This paper presents a novel generalization of the IRL problem that allows each trajectory to be generated by multiple locally consistent reward functions, hence catering to more realistic and complex experts behaviors. Solving our generalized IRL problem thus involves not only learning these reward functions but also the stochastic transitions between them at any state (including unvisited states). By representing our IRL problem with a probabilistic graphical model, an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm can be devised to iteratively learn the different reward functions and the stochastic transitions between them in order to jointly improve the likelihood of the experts demonstrated trajectories. As a result, the most likely partition of a trajectory into segments that are generated from different locally consistent reward functions ...
Melbourne Airport third runway could change direction - Australian Aviation
The N/S option always had significant benefits such as less noise footprint over developed areas, flatter existing topography. What has come out now is that prevailing winds mean it will be operational more than another E-W runway. The main attraction of a new E-W runway was accessibility; with parallel E-W runways operational, planes could access or exit their runway without having to cross an operational runway. The terminal layout means with 2 N-S runways, planes will have to cross the existing operational N-S runway to get to the new runway or alternatively they face a very long taxi around, as yet non-existent, taxiways circling the old N-S runway.. ...

Rewarding Electrical Brain Stimulation in Rats after Peripheral Nerve Injury:Decreased Facilitation by Commonly Abused...
During initial acquisition sessions the frequency was held constant (156 Hz) and the intensity was adjusted by the experimenter to determine the lowest intensity that maintained high rates of responding (more than 40 responses/min). Once responding was established, frequency-response curves were generated. These 2-h sessions consisted of six 10-min components, which were further broken down into ten 1-min trials. Each 60-s trial consisted of a 5-s timeout, then a 5-s period during which five noncontingent stimulations were delivered, and finally a 50-s period in which lever presses resulted in stimulation and were recorded. During these sessions the intensity remained the same (unique to each animal) and 10 frequencies (156-45 Hz, 0.06 log increments) corresponding to each trial were presented in descending order. A 1-h timeout period between the third and fourth components permitted drug injections during test sessions. During test sessions when fentanyl was administered, the timeout period was ...
Electrical Brain Stimulation Offers Hope Against Dyslexia
THURSDAY, Sept. 10, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Electrical stimulation of a sound-processing area of the brain can briefly improve reading skills in adults with dyslexia, a new, small study has found.. Researchers say their results suggest that deficits in that brain region are a cause of the reading difficulties seen in dyslexia.. But whether thats the case -- or whether brain stimulation can help treat dyslexia -- remains an open question.. The study, of 30 adults with and without dyslexia, looked at the effects of electrically stimulating a brain area called the left auditory cortex. Altered activity in that brain region has been linked to the difficulty people with dyslexia have in processing the sounds of language.. Whats been unclear is whether that brain difference actually causes problems with processing language sounds, according to lead researcher Silvia Marchesotti, of the University of Geneva in Switzerland.. Her team found evidence that it does. When study participants were given 20 ...

We included six trials with a total of 137 participants. We found two studies with 45 participants examining the effects of tDCS compared to control (sham tDCS) on our primary outcome measure, impairment, as measured by the Unified Parkinsons Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). There was very low quality evidence for no effect of tDCS on change in global UPDRS score ( mean difference (MD) -7.10 %, 95% confidence interval (CI -19.18 to 4.97; P = 0.25, I² = 21%, random-effects model). However, there was evidence of an effect on UPDRS part III motor subsection score at the end of the intervention phase (MD -14.43%, 95% CI -24.68 to -4.18; P = 0.006, I² = 2%, random-effects model; very low quality evidence). One study with 25 participants measured the reduction in off and on time with dyskinesia, but there was no evidence of an effect (MD 0.10 hours, 95% CI -0.14 to 0.34; P = 0.41, I² = 0%, random-effects model; and MD 0.00 hours, 95% CI -0.12 to 0.12; P = 1, I² = 0%, random- effects model, ...

Marijuana is currently the most commonly abused illicit drug. According to recent studies, cannabinoid use occurring prior to pregnancy can impact brain plasticity and behavior in future generations. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether adolescent exposure of female rats to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) induces transgenerational effects on the reward-facilitating effects of Δ9-THC and d-amphetamine in their adult male offspring. Female Sprague-Dawley rats received Δ9-THC (0.1 or 1 mg/kg, ip) or vehicle during postnatal days 28-50. As adults, females were mated with drug-naïve males. We then assessed potential alterations of the Δ9-THCs (0, 0.1, 0.5 and 1mg/kg, ip) and d-amphetamines (0, 0.1, 0.5 and 1mg/kg, ip) reward-modifying effects using the curve-shift variant of the intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) procedure in their adult male F1 offspring. The reward-facilitating effect of the 0.1mg dose of Δ9-THC was abolished in the F1 offspring of females that were

Puma Runway Grip Bag
If you want a Speedy-like handbag at a more affordable price I have found the perfect handbag that is also quite beautiful! I present the Puma Runway Grip Bag and I must say this handbag is stunning! I consider Puma to be a casual/sport brand and for them to come out with a handbag this fabulous is kind of shocking. Only huge downfall about this handbag is that it is a faux-leather handbag but if you favor the no-killing of animals for handbags you may just love the Puma Runway Grip Bag! The handbag comes with a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap, gold hardware, has plenty of room with its height of 14 inches and length of 17 inches and it even has a Puma logo plate on the front of the bag. The Runway Grip Bag comes in two different colors: white and black. Both colors are fabulous but my favorite is the white! Yes, the white would be a maintenance problem but if this handbag was real leather I would snatch it up in a heart beat!. The Puma Runway Grip Bag retails for $120, but it is ...

Generalizing the Power-Seeking Theorems - LessWrong 2.0 viewer
It sure seems like Frank is more likely to start with the blue or green gems. Those give him way more choices along the way, after all. But the previous theorems only said at γ=0, hes equally likely to pick each gem. At γ=1, hes equally likely to end up in each terminal state. Not helpful.. Let me tell you, finding the probability that one tangled web of choices is optimal over another web, is generally a huge mess. Youre finding the measure of reward functions which satisfy some messy system of inequalities, like r1+γr21−γ,max(r3+γ1−γ2(r4+γr5),r3+γr51−γ,r31−γ).. And thats in the simple tiny environments! How do we reason about instrumental convergence - how do we find those sets of trajectories which are more likely to be optimal for a lot of reward functions? We exploit symmetries. ...

Attention and Preparatory Processes in the Central Nervous System.
Efforts were directed toward improved understanding of the slow potential SP of the brain. This electrically recordable dynamic differs from the conventional EEG in being nonrhythmic and of durations from 1 to many fold longer than the longest enduring components of the EEG. It is best elicited by use of motivating conditioned stimuli and by signals conditioning stimuli related to them in the learning process. A study was made of the relation of multiple firing potentials of neurons to the SP as both are related to temporal fixed interval conditioning controlled by medial forebrain bundle MFB electrical reward in the rat. A correlation was observed of the pacing of the level of expectancy in the trained subject with the SP, which, in this context, has been termed the Anticipatory Potential Gradient or APG.

Predictive Reward Signal of Dopamine Neurons
CiteWeb id: 19980000092. CiteWeb score: 5133. Schultz, Wolfram. Predictive reward signal of dopamine neurons. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 1-27, 1998. The effects of lesions, receptor blocking, electrical self-stimulation, and drugs of abuse suggest that midbrain dopamine systems are involved in processing reward information and learning approach behavior. Most dopamine neurons show phasic activations after primary liquid and food rewards and conditioned, reward-predicting visual and auditory stimuli. They show biphasic, activation-depression responses after stimuli that resemble reward-predicting stimuli or are novel or particularly salient. However, only few phasic activations follow aversive stimuli. Thus dopamine neurons label environmental stimuli with appetitive value, predict and detect rewards and signal alerting and motivating events. By failing to discriminate between different rewards, dopamine neurons appear to emit an alerting message about the surprising presence or absence of rewards. All ...

Medial forebrain bundle - Distinction Essays
What is the medial forebrain bundle?Discuss the evidence for and against its involvement in reward. In addition, review the evidence showing that the brains dopamine pathways are critically involved in pleasure and reward.. The MFB goes by throughout the lateral hypothalamus and the basal forebrain inside a rostral-caudal route. The MFB does have its principal projections to those regions of Brodmann places (BA) 8, 9, 10, 11, 11m. The superior frontal place of MFB jobs to BA 8, 9, 10 the rostral midsection frontal tasks to dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (BA 9, 10) lateral orbitofrontal of MFB reveals its projections to nucleus accumbens septi (NAC) and ventral striatum as subcortical compensate linked constructions.[1]. It has both climbing and descending materials. The mesolimbic pathway, and that is a assortment of dopaminergic neurons that assignments from your ventral tegmental location to the nucleus accumbens, is a component pathway of the MFB.[2]. The MFB is among the two significant ...

Internal or mood-change motives of drinking to cope with negative mood, as well as drinking to enhance positive mood (get high), have also been implicated as risk factors. Social drinkers aged 18-45 years were recruited from an Australian university and the local community, with the final sample consisting of 155 participants (80 females, ...
Cannabinoid Modulation of Reinforcement Maintained by Stimulation of t by Jason Wiebelhaus
Cannabinoid agonists, including marijuana containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), are found rewarding by humans. In addition to human self-reports and experimental studies that show marijuana is rewarding, contributions from preclinical studies also have implicated cannabinoid receptors in reward-motivated behavior. One way to assess these preclinical effects of cannabinoids is intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS), where an animal performs a response to receive electrical stimulation of a specific brain area or circuit known to be involved in reward. Drugs of abuse, such as psychomotor stimulants, facilitate responding for ICSS. While a few studies have shown facilitating effects of cannabinoids in rats, several have shown the opposite effect, and no studies so far have evaluated cannabinoids in mouse ICSS. Furthermore there are no studies evaluating specific inhibitors of endocannabinoid catabolic enzymes in ICSS in any species. In these studies we assessed the cannabinoid agonist THC, as well

Scientists Improve Human Self-Control Through Electrical Brain Stimulation - Neuroscience News
A computer stimulated the prefrontal cortex exactly when braking was needed. This was done using electrodes implanted directly on the brain surface.. When the test was repeated with stimulation of a brain region outside the prefrontal cortex, there was no effect on behavior, showing the effect to be specific to the prefrontal braking system.. This was a double-blind study, meaning that participants and scientists did not know when or where the charges were being administered.. The method of electrical stimulation was novel in that it apparently enhanced prefrontal function, whereas other human brain stimulation studies mostly disrupt normal brain activity. This is the first published human study to enhance prefrontal lobe function using direct electrical stimulation, the researchers report.. The study involved four volunteers with epilepsy who agreed to participate while being monitored for seizures at the Mischer Neuroscience Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (TMC). thank you for your answer. as for your questions, your guess is as good as mine (well better) because my lecturer hasnt answered my queries yet (and may never judging from past experience). i only have my lecture notes and his powerpoint slides to go on, and i wrote down everything they say below. but i believe you must be right, because i have absolute faith in the competence of this lecturer. the former experiment must refer to cocaine being available concurrently with the ICSS, and the textbook experiment refers to the behaviour of rats during ICSS after cocaine has aleady been administered. theres a reference in my lecturers powerpoint slides, but its not in our library: Maldonado-Irizarry, C.S., J.R. Derivation and Validation of a Novel Risk Score to Predict Overcorrection of Severe Hyponatremia | American Society of...
Overcorrection is the most controllable risk factor for ODS but has no accepted criteria nor reliable knowledge regarding how its risk is influenced by baseline patient factors. This study used LCA to incorporate all published criteria for overcorrection and measure its association with baseline covariates. This model was summarized into the SHOR score which effectively stratified our cohort by overcorrection risk. Intravenous administration of both fluids and sodium during the first 24 hours increased significantly as SHOR score increased. The SHOR score was significantly associated overcorrection risk in an internal but not external validation cohort.. George et al. measured the association of baseline factors with hyponatremic overcorrection in a large (n=1490) multicenter study of patients with hyponatremia (31). Using criterion G3 to define overcorrection (Supplemental Table 2), they found that patient age, initial sodium, and hypokalemia were all independently associated with ...
Effort but not Reward Sensitivity is Altered by Acute Sickness Induced by Experimental Endotoxemia in Humans. - Wellcome Centre...
Sickness behavior in humans is characterized by low mood and fatigue, which have been suggested to reflect changes in motivation involving reorganization of priorities. However, it is unclear which specific processes underlying motivation are altered. We tested whether bacterial endotoxin E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) affected two dissociable constructs of motivational behavior, ie, effort and reward sensitivity. After familiarization with 5 effort levels, participants made a series of accept/reject decisions on whether the stake offered (1, 4, 8, 12, or 15 apples) was worth the effort (10%, 27.5%, 45%, 62.5%, and 80% of maximal voluntary contraction in a hand-held dynamometer). Effort and reward levels were parametrically modulated to dissociate their influence on choice. Overall, 29 healthy young males were administered LPS (2 ng/kg; n=14) or placebo (0.9% saline; n=15). The effort-stake task, and self-reported depression and fatigue were assessed prior to LPS/placebo injection, 2 and 5 h post

Pretend Play Podcast - Social Behavior Solutions
Welcome to the pretend play podcast. A podcast focusing on the research and application of pretend play and language skills. We begin by discussing deficits in play identified in children diagnosed with autism, language delays, or other developmental delays. We talk about functional play, the absence of elaborated play acts, and the use of gestures and vocalizations in play. We go on to discuss the correlations between play and language and the importance of targeting them simultaneously. In addition to language, play effects other developmental domains including cognition, social, self-regulation, school readiness, and more.. Looking more toward applications we address some common barriers we have encountered to teaching children appropriate play skills. As well as the necessary components that need to be in place when programming for pretend play. These components include looking at the developmental sequence and the importance of a systematic approach. To close things out we look at the ...

Direct amygdala stimulation can enhance human memory. The findings, from Cory Inman, Jon Willie and colleagues from the Department of Neurosurgery and Joe Manns from Psychology, were the first published example of electrical brain stimulation in humans giving an event-specific boost to memory lasting overnight. The research was conducted with epilepsy patients undergoing an invasive procedure for seizure diagnosis. However, the technology could one day be incorporated into a device aimed at helping those with memory impairments, such as people with traumatic brain injury or neurodegenerative diseases.. Extra note: you may have seen similar neuroscience research in a recent Nature Communications paper, which was described in the New York Times. Cory Inman had some comments below - he and neurosurgeon Robert Gross were co-authors:. The localization to the left lateral temporal cortex was interesting, because it hadnt been identified as a region that modulates episodic or hippocampus-dependent ...

Autocrine signalling - Wikipedia
Autocrine signaling is a form of cell signaling in which a cell secretes a hormone or chemical messenger (called the autocrine agent) that binds to autocrine receptors on that same cell, leading to changes in the cell. This can be contrasted with paracrine signaling, intracrine signaling, or classical endocrine signaling. An example of an autocrine agent is the cytokine interleukin-1 in monocytes. When interleukin-1 is produced in response to external stimuli, it can bind to cell-surface receptors on the same cell that produced it.[citation needed] Another example occurs in activated T cell lymphocytes, i.e., when a T cell is induced to mature by binding to a peptide:MHC complex on a professional antigen-presenting cell and by the B7:CD28 costimulatory signal. Upon activation, low-affinity IL-2 receptors are replaced by high-affinity IL-2 receptors consisting of α, β, and γ chains. The cell then releases IL-2, which binds to its own new IL-2 receptors, causing self-stimulation and ...
Keith Frankish - Uncommon Descent
Earlier, Frankish explained that Dennett accounts for consciousness as a temporary level of organisation-a virtual system-that we create for ourselves through certain learned habits of self-stimulation. But what are the concepts we, ourselves, and self- even doing in this discussion? If consciousness is an illusion, these concepts are illusions that cannot create anything. ...

Althouse: Project Runway--one week youre in....
My random thought on Project Runway: Daniel just seems like such a nice kid. And I always liked his stuff until this week. I thought Andrae was going to win, too, Ann, so dont feel bad. His was just as beautiful as Daniels but MUCH more wearable and flattering to his model. Jay was annoying. I have a crush on Nina Garcia, I love the way she talks. I liked Chloes and my wife has loved everything Chloes done (although they tell her shes not ambitious enough). I could have designed Karas dress. Bo. Ring. It SUCKS for Nicks model to get stolen and then, BOOM youre out. Too bad, because she was definitely better than the blond, skinny Rachael. Oh, well ...
