In personal accounts, humiliation is often reported as a very intense, painful, negative emotion. We report two scenario studies in which we explored two factors that may contribute to the intense character of humiliation: (1) unwanted, negative public exposure, and (2) a threat to central aspects of ones identity. Study 1 (N = 115) assessed emotional reactions to a public insult when an audience responded with either laughter or not and when someone from the audience offered support after the insult or no support was offered. Results showed that the intensity of humiliation increased when people laughed after the insult. However, support offered after the insult had no effect on reported humiliation. Study 2 (N = 99) focused on threats to different self-related values and showed stronger reports of humiliation when central self-related values were threatened than when less central self-related values were threatened. Study 2 also replicated the audience-effect from Study 1, but only when central self
The purpose of this study was to research and analyze the influencing factors that have led occupational therapy further away from mental health practice. The following research questions were used as a basis to analyze the shift of the OT profession away from mental health: 1. To what extent are education requirements and practices changing the focus of occupational therapy? 2. To what extent are public or occupational therapy student perceptions of mental illness affecting the use of occupational therapy as a therapeutic modality? 3. To what extent are there incentives or disincentives that have led occupational therapists to choose other fields of practice? 4. To what extent are current mental health policies changing the use of occupational therapy in treatment for the mentally ill? 5. To what extent are current insurance systems affecting the use of occupational therapy in treating the mentally ill? Occupational therapys roots were founded with a strong background in mental health ...
by Rik Loose , Vol 18 (3/4) 2000. Texts by Abraham, Rado, Glover and Gross are explored in order to investigate post-Freudian literature on the question of addiction. The reduction of the Freudian field is analysed in order to produce new foundation stones for a theory on addiction by confronting the (post-Freudian) reduced elements with each other. A reading of the post-Freudian literature shows that it is possible to distinguish between different periods in psychoanalytic thinking about addiction. These periods represent, in their own style, a reduction of Freuds work. A confrontation between the earlier drive-theory and the later ego(self)psychology period, interestingly enough, does not lead to a synthesis of the two into a higher order of thinking on addiction. Surprisingly, it results in the production of new theoretical elements and a shift in thinking about addiction. Thus, despite the lack of fecundity in most post-Freudian thinking on addiction, the possibility nevertheless exists to ...
In recent years the phenomenon of the battered wife has emerged as a serious social problem warranting criminologists attention in the context of victimology. In the present study, pertinent literature and the nature of intrafamilial violence are examined in some detail. To explore the subject empirically, structured interviews were conducted with 30 women in shelter care centers in Lyons, France, roundtable discussions were held with professionals treating battered wives, and a formal survey of professionals was performed. Institutional records were also consulted. Data analysis indicates that most of the women are still married at the point of their institutional contact, are 20 to 40 years old (in three-fourths of the cases), have an average of 3.3 children, and are often foreigners (25 percent). Women without professions are common, and many of the women are from geographically distant regions. In many cases the women have been hospitalized with injuries and fractures resulting from ...
National mental health policy identifies personal recovery as the intended orientation of mental health services [1]. Our review indicates that a shift from the dominant clinical recovery paradigm to personal recovery is underway, but not complete. However, the emergence of a new service-defined understanding of recovery has unknown implications for mental health systems. The clear differentiation between different understandings of recovery held by staff provides a framework for assessing the recovery orientation of mental health services and can be used to develop accreditation criteria and fidelity indicators.. Given the absence of nationally endorsed clinical guidelines for recovery-orientated care, it is not surprising that management tools and process indicators (throughput, discharge etc.) have been used by organisations to define recovery [10]. However, this attempt to operationalise recovery through the lens of organisational priorities has been criticised, both by people working in ...

This paper argues that duality accounts of time, as exemplified by Henri Bergsons, Edmund Husserls, and John McTaggarts ideas, parallel the decomposition of temporal experience in depressive psychosis into objective and subjective dimensions of time. The paper also proposes to comprehend the full-fledged depressive temporal delusion, in which the subjective flow of time comes to a standstill, via the idea of a double orientation to reality characteristic of schizophrenic delusions. In the depressive temporal delusion a person claims that time is not moving while simultaneously her cognitive orientation in temporal surroundings remains largely unaffected, hence the double orientation. The juxtaposition of temporal experience in depression with the temporal disorientation in dementia enables us to situate the depressive delusion regarding the flow of time in the middle of a proposed scale of the disintegration of normal temporal experience ...
anzellot at mit dot edu I am interested in the human ability to acquire and process knowledge about other people, and in the underlying neural mechanisms. This includes recognizing person identity and representing associated semantic information, as well as processing information that is orthogonal to identity, such as emotions and mental states. My research focuses on the use of neuroimaging methods together with machine learning techniques and mathematical models to characterize (1) what information is represented in brain regions involved in processing knowledge about people, and (2) how these brain regions dynamically interact, working as a network during information processing. In addition to its importance for guiding social interactions, knowledge about people is a promising case study for understanding the mechanisms underlying human knowledge about the world. This paper will explore relationship aspects of social exclusion and consider their implications for mental health and for social work mental health practice. Current understandings of the impact of exclusionary social relations tend to focus on their implications for peoples capacity to achieve need satisfaction, and thus seek to address the denial of inner and outer resources. However, a further dimension of these relations is that of their meanings for people, arising in discourses involving exclusion from relationships of respect. Evidence indicates that these meanings result in the experience of trauma, which can be shown to make its own contribution to disempowerment in the mental health context. In accordance with this, research suggests that relationships between the worker and service user which involve respect result in good mental health outcomes, and simultaneously provide a foundation for anti-discriminatory practice. The paper suggests that social work education in respect of ...
The study of the effect of exceptional experiences and beliefs on health-including anomalous, placebo, or hypnotic healing and mystical, religious, transpersonal, and creative experiences-is attracting increasing academic and public interest. This collection of essays explores the nature of mind, its impact on the body, and the relationship between exceptional experiences and physical health, mental health, and the potential for other types of perception. Examining the influence of spiritual practices, mental imagery, and alternative healing methods such as Reiki and Johrei, the essays encourage the expansion of mental health practice to include the full range of exceptional experiences. By normalizing experiences that are often pathologized, this book recognizes that exceptional human experiences can and do have value for physical and mental health.. ...

The USPSTF reviewed 11 good- or fair-quality systematic reviews on behavioral interventions, including complementary or alternative therapies, and smoking-cessation outcomes.8 Evidence on increasing smoking abstinence was strongest for physician and nurse advice, tailored self-help materials, and telephone counseling. Based on a 2013 systematic review of 28 studies (n = 22,239),20 rates of smoking abstinence at 6 months or more were 8.0% in groups that received physician advice compared with 4.8% in groups that received no advice or usual care (risk ratio [RR], 1.76 [95% CI, 1.56 to 1.96]). Based on pooled analyses of 35 studies from a 2013 systematic review that evaluated advice delivered by nurses, 13.3% of participants who received interventions from nurses achieved smoking abstinence at 6 months or more compared with 11.3% of those who received usual care or minimal intervention (RR, 1.29 [CI, 1.20 to 1.39]).21 When stratified by intensity level, both minimal advice (defined as a single ...
I love how motherhood demands that I keep stripping away my self-focus. Im at my best when Im not stomping around, but rather, just enjoying these constant acts of service. But Im also human and sometimes I dont allow myself the negative feelings, at least not with a whole lot of shame. Its hard. Impossibly hard. The exhaustion and constant needs to be met. And yet, I expect perfection from myself. For me to feel always serene and in control. Why do I do that? It makes no sense. It just leaves me failing and focusing on THAT. I guess Im just trying so hard to learn to be more gentle with myself in these days, too. That way, my soul is not too tired and beat up and guilty to be gentle to them.. ReplyDelete ...
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. 21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen. - Ephesians 3:20-21. Have you ever wished to be a part of something far bigger than your own small existence? Have you wanted to invest yourself in something truly worthwhile? As Christians, we all long to live transcendent lives. But we live in a culture that has institutionalized self-focus and personal entitlement. Often times that means we need to be rescued from ourselves. Things like debt, addiction, etc. are the results of an inward focus for meaning in our lives. But God wants so much more for us. He wants us to live transcendent lives. Living a transcendent life means that what you think, desire, say, and do is driven by something bigger than personal wants, needs, and feelings. Gods purpose for our lives is to transcend our self-oriented existence and ...
The Need for a Mind in Repose. Not only have we lost our natural rhythm, we cant even remember that we had one, says author and spiritual teacher David Less.. David Less talks about the mind that has lost its natural rhythm:. • The world we live in is continually pulling our minds and our psyches outward into intense mental activity.. • The pressures and stresses of daily life can strain and twist our sense of inner well-being so that it is difficult to find true relaxation unlesswegoonvacation,andsometimeseventhenwedontfindit.. • Over time, this lack of ease in our lives strains our relationships, distorts our needs, and dulls our vitality and creative energy.. • It can drive us into behaviors and decisions we sense are wrong but dont know how to correct.. • The constant, even relentless, activity of the mind is a reflection of this strained state. With our many daily responsibilities and obliga- tions at work and at home, we rush out and keep a fast pace as we multi-task our ...

The motivation for this piece arose from my having become aware of a new trend in psychoanalysis, begun in the 1980s, called relational psychoanalysis. Pioneered by the late Stephen Mitchell and others, it views the separation of modern psychoanalysis into competing schools as foolish and advocates an intelligent integration of such approaches as Kohuts self psychology, the object relations school of psychology, the interpersonal approach of Harry Stack Sullivan, ego psychology, drive psychology, inter-subjective analysis, and other sub-types of psychoanalytic thought. I concur and go further, advocating a continuing expansion of a depth-psychology approach that also can include other dimensions, such as further dynamics of interpersonal relations, small and larger group dynamics, work in communications theory, and research in social psychology. All these have profound dynamics and should be recognized as being part of a true depth psychology. For example, Ive realized that the dynamics of ...
Its not so easy to find biographical detail regarding Schores training or his own experience of analysis or analytic training, so I am not sure how they shaped his way of being as a therapist. The strongest influences - always in the background of Schores thinking - seem to be attachment theory and the self psychology tradition within psychoanalysis (the titles of his first books followed Kohuts on the origin, disturbances and repair of the self). In terms of neurobiology he is, of course, an interdisciplinary giant, drawing on a wide range of neuroscientists, but high-profile in the lecture were references to Ian McGilchrists book The Master and his Emissary.. Bringing together infant studies, attachment and the intersubjectivity of early development with affective neuroscience is what Schore is famous for, leading to the crucial recognition that the development of the childs brain (right down into the detail of anatomy and brain chemistry) and mind are dependent on the early emotional ...

The concept of mental health recovery promotes collaborative partnership among consumers, carers and service providers. However views on mental health recovery are less explored among carers and service providers. The aim of this review was to analyse contemporary literature exploring views of mental health consumers, carers and service providers in relation to their understanding of the meaning of mental health recovery and factors influencing mental health recovery. The literature review questions were: How is mental health recovery and factors influencing mental health recovery viewed by consumers, carers and service providers? What are the differences and similarities in those perceptions? How can the outcomes and recommendations inform the Australian mental health practices? A review of the literature used selected electronic databases and specific search terms and supplemented with manual searching ...
Research demonstrates that mentally healthy students are more successful in school. It is important to recognize that mental health is not simply the absence of mental illness; it also means having the skills necessary to cope with lifes challenges. Developmental research since the 1970s demonstrates that mental health and psychological wellness are not ancillary to school success but are integral to it (Doll & Cummings, 2008; Haertel, Walberg & Weinstein, 1983; Masten et al., 2005;Wang, Haertel, and Walberg, 1990). Adelman and Taylor (2000) promote the full integration of mental health practices in the instruction and management of schools because social and emotional competence enables students to be academically competent. In addition, social and emotional education, which may include instruction in conflict resolution, problem solving, empathy, and emotional self regulation is a primary prevention strategy likely to prevent the onset of negative developmental outcomes including violence. ...

These quotes come from the book entitled Who Moved My Cheese, written by Dr. Spencer Johnson. I can totally relate to the insight provided here. I never planned for nor did I dream of a career in outpatient mental health. I was in a temporary job ten or more years ago and needed a full time job. I had faith that God would direct me accordingly. I had plenty of office experience, but no medical or mental health experience when I received a call from an office manager in a mental health practice that they were having difficulty finding someone for a position in their practice. Mind you, I was simply doing my job when this call came in to the office. I was working in a personnel office at the time. I needed a full time job and knew in my heart I was the person to fill this position. I didnt seek out that full time job. However, the job found me, because I believed without a doubt ...

MAIN RESULTS: We found 40 RCTs meeting inclusion criteria in total (21 trials were new in this update, 5 new trials contributed to long-term results (more than 12 months)). Interventions consist of behavioural therapeutic approaches, telephone support and self-help material and were either focused on smoking cessation alone or addressed several risk factors (eg. obesity, inactivity and smoking). The trials mostly included older male patients with CHD, predominantly myocardial infarction (MI). After an initial selection of studies three trials with implausible large effects of RR , 5 which contributed to substantial heterogeneity were excluded. Overall there was a positive effect of interventions on abstinence after 6 to 12 months (risk ratio (RR) 1.22, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13 to 1.32, I² 54%; abstinence rate treatment group = 46%, abstinence rate control group 37.4%), but heterogeneity between trials was substantial. Studies with validated assessment of smoking status at follow-up had ...

Medical studies have demonstrated that ambien may not work well for everybody, who has a problem of insomnia. The sleeping tablets do not address the fundamental cause behind the loss of sleep, meaning when a person tries to stop the medication, insomnia returns as primary causes were not fixed properly. Therefore, they go back to the pills or decide to take them for many months or even years.. The longer you take the drug, the more the body adjusts and additional doses are then required. When this occurs, addiction can result. An individual becomes excessively dependent on the relaxing effects of medicine. To obviate addiction or side effects, buy Ambien 10mg or other dosage after getting proper medical recommendation.. People who attempted to stop the medication sometimes experienced an elated state of mental activity, such as being on overdrive, which left them anxious and restless. So, they developed an addiction and went back to the medicine to feel relaxed or calm again, instead of working ...
