Background: Health and disease exist in a continuum. Self-care is as old as illness if not as humans. Self-care is a lay behavioural response of individuals to promote or restore their health. One form of self-care is self-medication. Drugs are central to self-medication. Although there are arguments for and against self-medication, its contribution to promote health, and prevent and treat diseases is beyond doubt. Self-medication is the selection and use of medicines by individuals to treat self-recognized illnesses or symptoms of illnesses. Socio-demographic and socio-economic variables affect self-medication. In this study, an attempt has been made to assess self-medication practices with modern drugs and consumers drug knowledge in Addis Ababa. Methods: A multi-stage stratified sampling of drug retail outlets and drug consumers (actual drug users and messengers) was designed and used. Structured questionnaires to assess prospective self-medication practices and consumers drug knowledge were ...

A short article on two Canadian surveys (self-reporting by users) showing that many epilepsy and multiple sclerosis patients self-medicate with marijuana. The author states that social and legal obstacles have hampered clinical advances in the study of cannabis sativa for medical treatment of a variety of neurological symptoms.. "Cannabis use may be occurring in these settings but there is little scientific evidence of its effectiveness for neurological symptoms. No controlled data lend support to its use for epilepsy. Small studies in multiple sclerosis have shown variable results against spasticity and no effect for tremor. A large [660 subjects] randomized trial comparing oral THC, oral cannabis extract, and placebo showed no effect on spasticity (measured by the Ashworth scale), despite participants reporting fewer spasms and less pain.. "Some of the many variables facing clinical investigators include different drug formulations (cannabis extracts, synthetic cannabinoids), uncertain dose, ...

Zoopharmacognosy is a behaviour in which non-human animals apparently self-medicate by selecting and ingesting or topically applying plants, soils, insects, and psychoactive drugs to prevent or reduce the harmful effects of pathogens and toxins. The term derives from Greek roots zoo ("animal"), pharma ("drug"), and gnosy ("knowing"). A well-known example of zoopharmacognosy occurs when dogs eat grass to induce vomiting. However, the behaviour is more diverse than this. Animals ingest or apply non-foods such as clay, charcoal and even toxic plants and invertebrates, apparently to prevent parasitic infestation or poisoning. Whether animals truly self-medicate remains a somewhat controversial subject because early evidence is mostly circumstantial or anecdotal, however, more recent examinations have adopted an experimental, hypothesis-driven approach. The methods by which animals self-medicate vary, but can be classified according to function as prophylactic (preventative, before infection or ...

All of the above have to be treated like medication at school because they contain active ingredients and can cause allergic reactions and/or over-dosage. Parents need to bring them to school and sign a permission form.. For older students, in order to self carry the cough drops, a self medication form must be completed by the parent and student. The easiest way to avoid this is to use hard candy instead of medicated cough drops.. Consider medicating your child with Tylenol or Ibuprofen in the morning if they have tooth pain instead of sending medication to school. Be sure to access dental care as needed. If you need assistance with this, contact your school nurse. Some children are allergic to topical creams so they must be stored in the health room and a permission form signed by the parent. For older students who want to self carry, please complete a self medication form.. ...

Los Angeles, California 90024. The concept of drug use as self-medication has been extant for many years but has received considerably more attention in the last decade. This, of course, coincides with the influx of large numbers of mental health professionals into the drug dependence field and renewed efforts to explain the phenomena of drug use and to better understand the complex nature of drug dependence. Attempts have been made to provide a unifying theory of drug dependence, and individual investigator have approached the problem from one or another theoretical viewpoint, each providing a partial explanation for drug dependence.. Wikler in his 1953 paper, Psychiatric Aspects of Drug Addiction,1 discussed a multi-etiological basis of drug addiction and three formulations of the psychiatric aspects of drug addiction. He notes several different groups using narcotic drugs for differing reasons: neurotic individuals seeking relief from anxiety; psychopaths seeking a state of elation; ...

A physician, Prof. Christy Okoromah, has warned Nigerians against self-medication, as some of the elements included in drug products can endanger the heart.
Self-medication now prevails worldwide as a major trend in health care, partly as a remedy for saving government medical costs. On the other hand, self-medication is also a counteraction to side effects sometimes caused by the treatments of traditional Western medicine. While modern medical technology is important and crucial to save lives from serious illnesses or injuries, it is essential to prevent diseases as much as possible. Under the current environment, where self-medication is promoted and alternative medicine is well accepted, medicinal herbs can be widely used to enhance the immune system and support the body s natural self-healing power to maintain good health.
dependence-oriented groups that are so common in treatment programs. If someone was anxious before they got addicted and used opiates, at least in part, to self-medicate, several years of drug abuse and then drug withdrawal is not going to cure the problem. There are many ways to treat these problems without the use of addicting medications. Specifically, the use of benzodiazepines (Valium, Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax) should be avoided if at all possible. If they absolutely must are used, longer acting medication, such as Klonopin, taken on a set schedule and not in response to symptoms helps avoid the "feel bad-take a pill" problem. Many opiate addicts also are dependent on this class of drugs. Withdrawal from benzodiazepines causes severe anxiety and can be dangerous as seizures are possible. If this is the case a strategy to deal with this problem is vital.. This information is important as background for how to treat patients in these situations. First, we know that they will have some anxiety ...

Now, this is pretty shaky evidence for condemning a culture. While its possible that aspects of Mormonism are causing or compounding depression, there are plenty of alternate explanations for why Utah (which is not actually all Mormon, but lets ignore that for a moment) might have a high medication rate. One possibility is that Utah actually does have high depression rates--but because of another factor such as weather or high levels of some recessive Scandinavian depression-related gene. But since medication rates are not the same as depression rates, its also possible that Utahns are not actually more depressed than any one else, only better medicated. Its possible, for example, that because of Mormon influence, Utahns are more likely to go to doctors for medication than to self-medicate through substance abuse. Or else that Mormons are more likely to find voices that decrease the stigma of mental health treatment, either in official church publications or just through brothers and sisters ...

If the human desire to alter consciousness and self-medicate was simply accepted, I think we could find much better ways of addressing the issues of public health - both on a personal and societal level. We could have separate distribution centers for off-label products, with something on the order of a Pharmacy Tech or even a Pharmacist/Physician with special knowledge of the substances in question. They could inform the individual of the known and unknown properties of the substance, methods of administration, dosage, usage, where to get help if they are developing an addiction, and check on their general health. They could be regulated and monitored, if desired, to restrict distribution through unauthorized channels and to inexperienced or under-aged individuals. Any chemicals that did not have a history of use or study could be additionally labeled/categorized and distributed only to individuals that could demonstrate at least a basic understanding of that class of drugs and sign a waiver ...
There are multiple factors why a patient may experience difficulties swallowing pills. Even without a diagnosed illness, more than 65% of the elderly population suffers from dysphagia. Others, simply are unable to self-medicate - 40% of people who enter nursing homes do so in part for this reason. Even for those who receive assistance, 23% of caregivers report problems with medication management.
Regardless of why a person initially begins using drugs, people who have a great deal of fame, fortune or power often also have a great deal of stress. Which is better, abstinence or moderation? The answer to that question is within each person. Before I quit, I was feeling the same way you describe...anxious, depressed, fatter, less healthy, all of it. It was only after I quit that I was able to see what I had been doing to myself, even by drinking in what others might call a moderate way. The difference in my mood and outlook was shocking once I stopped putting alcohol in my system. So when I started to entertain the thought of going back to moderation, I asked myself Why? What does drinking offer me? Empty calories, depression, weight gain, and bloating, not to mention the low-level anxiety that I now realize was mostly caused by the alcohol itself. I drank to get that buzz, so whats the point of moderating if the very purpose to give myself permission to moderate is so I can continue to self-medicate? The answer for me is that there is no point in just having one now and then. Thats just like lighting matches near a gas can for me. ...

But I didnt really come into my illness until I moved away from home. I had my first serious manic phase followed by my first serious depressive phase. I failed my freshman year of college and had to move back into my parents house. For the next few years, I went through several short and mild episodes. I lost friends who said that I made them uncomfortable. My boyfriends would line up to warn anyone who showed any interest in me to stay away from the crazy girl. I told her how sad it was growing up for me feeling abandoned and unwanted. I explained to her the desperate measures my mother went to for me and how they all backfired and landed her in jail making me suffer yet another loss. I tried to tell her how these children live lives so full of chaos and struggle that it makes them grow up angry, depressed and desperate so that they self-medicate with drugs, turn to violence and engage in all sorts of other self destructive behaviors. I attempted to paint a picture for her of how it feels to have a fractured identity where you feel as if bits and pieces of yourself are all broken up and scattered around never able to fuse. Then I tried to explain to her how it feels to know that one of the people who made you has gone off and created an entire replacement family in your absence who you dont even know so that there are brothers and sisters that you have never even had a conversation with. I told her about how the boyfriends of single mothers commonly ...

1. You are over-confident and fearless.. Many people, and especially high achievers, cope with depression by acting in ways opposite to how they feel. (Shrinks call this "escapism.") Engaging in daredevil pursuits, be it mounting a takeover of a rival company or quitting your job to open a restaurant, makes you feel invincible, when youre really in the dumps. There is a method to this madness: The major cause of depressions, those not born of biochemical imbalances, of which there are plenty, is feeling out of control or helpless. Achievers loathe that feeling and fight like hell to deny it through action. But that, ultimately, wont work.. 2. Youve gone from one drink with dinner to three before appetizers.. "Alcohol is the anesthesia by which we endure the operation of life." Bernard Shaws observation is as true now as it was then. Drinking alcohol is the most common tactic people take to self-medicate emotional pain. The problem with this strategy is that when you finally recognize the ...

While many students who abuse stimulants are indeed healthy, some of them may actually be suffering from undiagnosed ADHD and "self-medicating" with stimulants as well as alcohol and marijuana.. Parents and students can work to prevent unnecessary use of stimulants. Colleges do not want to create an environment where "everyone" needs to use stimulants to keep up. It may be important to identify nutritional deficiencies that may lead to ADHD. Such deficiencies can be uncovered by appropriate testing. Orlando, FL - March 30, 2015 - Arthritis is an increasing problem, with millions of sufferers in the United States alone. Some experts are now concerned that there is also a growing trend of individuals self-medicating with potentially dangerous pharmaceuticals to manage their pain. According these experts, sufferers need to learn how they can properly discuss their pain with their healthcare provider to ensure they are getting proper treatment.. "Arthritis is not a condition that should be taken lightly. Sufferers should be seeking help from their doctor to determine the right pain management option for them," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle OSullivan.. According to experts, there are 4 steps to discuss pain with ones doctor properly. Individuals are encouraged to first keep a journal to document their pain. It can help to record the level of pain at various times of day, as well as what they were doing at the time. These steps can truly be helpful in allowing a doctor to ...
It is common for individuals who suffer from mental illness, whether it is formally diagnosed or not, to begin self-medicating to cope with the symptoms of their mental health.
To be honest, I barely remember testing positive in 1985, when the test became publicly available (my doctor and I estimate my infection occurred as far back as 1981). I was already self-medicating with a growing drug addiction -- it was Los Angeles, I was young and stupid, and people started dying; cocaine seemed like a reasonable response at the time -- and the test result felt like my license to continue using.. Today, its hard for me to recall a time in which I was afraid of becoming infected. I only know a life living with the virus, and my fears of HIV itself are long past. I hope my light touch will give them a needed lift or bring them a smile.. Its easy for me to make the mistake of assuming new infections only happen to younger people, and I even make an apologetic joke in the video about my being "old." The fact is, most new infections ...

Howdy, folks. This may be a first for this thread, but I am writing you from inside the major regional neuropsychiatric hospital I was checked into a few days ago for opiate abuse - specifically, self-medicating with tramadol the last 3-4 years so I could live a relatively normal and productive life without wanting to jump in front of every passing bus. Here are some facts I can share with some confidence. First, notwithstanding the good fortune of having access to top notch psychiatric care, and all of the wonder drugs available to those of us with some resources to treat those of us identified as severe bi-polar 2 victims, tramadol is the first and only thing that ever worked for me. And by "worked," what I mean is that it enabled me to live a normal family life, supporting my wife and kids as an upper middle class professional person, finding some reasonable enjoyment in life again, etc., etc. Second, tramadol is addictave. But Id rather live addicted to tramadol than be roadkill under a bus ...
