How does social comparison within a self-help group influence adjustment to chronic illness? A longitudinal study - Surrey...
Despite the growing popularity of self-help groups for people with chronic illness, there has been surprisingly little research into how these may support adjustment to illness. This study investigated the role that social comparison, occurring within a self-help group, may play in adjustment to chronic illness. A model of adjustment based on control process theory and response shift theory was tested to determine whether social comparisons predicted adjustment after controlling for the catalyst for adjustment (disease severity) and antecedents (demographic and psychological factors). A sample of 301 people with Ménières disease who were members of the Ménières Society UK completed questionnaires at baseline and 10-month follow-up assessing adjustment, defined for this study as functional and goal-oriented quality of life. At baseline, they also completed measures of the predictor variables i.e. the antecedents (age, sex, living circumstances, duration of self-help group membership, ...
Self-help groups for mental health - Wikipedia
Self-help groups for mental health are voluntary associations of people who share a common desire to overcome mental illness or otherwise increase their level of cognitive or emotional wellbeing. Despite the different approaches, many of the psychosocial processes in the groups are the same and they share similar relationships with mental health professionals. Mutual support or peer support is a process by which people voluntarily come together to help each other address common problems. Mutual support is social, emotional or instrumental support that is mutually offered or provided by persons with similar mental health conditions where there is some mutual agreement on what is helpful. Mutual support may include many other mental health consumer non-profits and social groups. Such groups are further distinguished as either Individual Therapy (inner-focused) or Social Reform (outer-focused) groups. The former is where members seek to improve themselves, where as the latter set encompasses ...

Vision Exchange: A New Online Resource for Support Group Leaders - VisionAware
Polly Abbott believes peer support groups are a very important component in the rehabilitation process. Low vision support groups are unique in that they try to address emotional needs as well as educational needs of the members. She has worked closely with support group leaders and sees the benefits of these groups. Polly observes there are three types of group members. New people enter the groups looking for understanding and support. Then there are the members who are focused on finding answers and solutions. Eventually, group members become knowledgeable and experienced in their adjustment to vision loss and then can share it with other members. Benefits of attending a support group are seen over time as it takes 6 months to a year to build relationships and for cumulative learning to take place, says Polly.. Polly is passionate about support groups and wants to provide leaders with support too. She created Vision Exchange, an online community for support group leaders. To date, there are ...

Estimating the effectiveness of self-help groups on the adoption of secondary preventive measures by people living with HIV in...
According to UNAIDS, the HIV epidemic has stabilized. This as a result of increased condom use and greater access to coverage for antiretroviral therapy (ART). In Central America, civil society organizations work with self-help groups (SHGs) organized in conjunction with public health services to implement interventions seeking to increase condom use and ART adherence for people living with HIV (PLH). To analyze the effectiveness of SHGs in Central America aimed on increasing condom use and ART adherence in PLH, We conducted a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire and a random sample of 3024 intervention group and 1166 control group. Based on propensity scoring and one-to-one matching (with replacement), we formed a comparison group to help estimate the effectiveness of the above-mentioned intervention on two outcome variables (condom use and ART adherence). The internal consistency of the results was tested through weighted least squares (WLS) and instrumental variable (IV) regression. Although
Healthcare seeking behaviour among self-help group households in Rural Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, India | BMC Health Services...
This paper examined healthcare seeking behaviour among households where at least one female member is affiliated to a womans self-help group in rural parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, India. Consistent with recent evidence from rural Odisha, a state in Eastern India [21], we found that the majority of rural households do access some form of care. In the case of acute illnesses only 14 percent of respondents forego care and in the case of chronic illnesses about 30 % do not seek care.. Analysis of provider usage patterns shows overwhelming use of private care for both outpatient and inpatient services. In the case of acute illnesses, private care is sought by 90 % of those who seek care while the corresponding figures are 83 % in the case of chronic illnesses and 78 % in the case of hospitalization. This study confirms the findings of Ager and Pepper [18] and Gautham et al. [21] that non-degree allopathic providers account for a substantial proportion of health care. In this study such providers ...

MUMBAI, AUG, 2017- Equifax India, registered as Equifax Credit Information Services Private Limited (ECIS), a global information solutions company, and International Financial Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, have signed a cooperation agreement to work together to deepen coverage of Self-Help Group (SHG) member data in credit bureaus and enable banks to use this data in credit appraisals.. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in women across the globe today. Over the years many radical treatments have improved the survival rate of breast cancer patients. However, these treatments often yield complications like anxiety, menopausal symptoms, fatigue, nausea, lymphedema, and dermatitis. These complicated side effects can lower the patients quality of life and impair their vitality.. Breast Cancer Support believes that dietary supplements namely vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids, and herbs can complement the conventional cancer treatment . They lessen the side effects of this exhaustive treatment, help improve the quality of patients life, and reduce overall stress. ...

Support Groups for Improving Quality of Life in Men with Prostate Canc by Aaron Fordice
Background: Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer affecting men today. Currently, 98% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer survive for 10 or more years after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The prolonged course of the disease makes interventions aimed at improving quality of life an essential component of prostate cancer treatment. There is a significant body of literature that suggests that support groups can improve the quality of life of cancer patients. However, because the bulk of the studies regarding cancer support groups focused on women with breast cancer, it is unclear how applicable the results are to men with prostate cancer.
Methods: A thorough search of the medical literature was conducted using, Medline (Ovid), CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Web of Science with the keywords: prostate cancer, prostate neoplasm, support group, peer group, and self-help group. Articles that reported primary data, included only men with prostate cancer, and measured changes in quality
