A significant achievement gap between students with disabilities and their peers without disabilities has led to increased inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education classroom. Assistive technology (AT) has the potential to improve access to the curriculum for students with high-incidence disabilities. Teachers are challenged with learning about, recommending, and implementing AT; yet little is known about how teachers in New Hampshire use AT or the needs for professional development (PD) in AT utilization. The purpose of this intrinsic case study was to understand how teachers in small rural New Hampshire schools utilized AT with students with high-incidence disabilities and teachers needs for PD in AT use. Data were collected via semistructured interviews of 5 general and 5 special education teachers from 6 small rural middle and high schools. Using levels of AT literacy as a conceptual framework, data were coded and analyzed to identify common themes. Findings showed that

by Darian Slayton Fleming. Over the years, I have discovered that more and more members have multiple disabilities including physical, psychiatric, intellectual and hearing loss. These additional disabilities are a natural part of life; they occur due to illnesses and accidents. Our military veterans have incurred multiple disabilities through their war action. Yet, my experience is that unless you are a spouse or family member, some of our peers who are blind seem unaware and intolerant of our needs to use mobility devices. I am writing specifically about the needs of those of us who have physical disabilities and use mobility devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, and scooters, and how people who are just blind can better understand and help us.. You may think we are unaware of how much space our devices take up and that we dont consider your needs to move freely without running into them. My experience is that those of us who use mobility devices are especially conscientious about looking for ...

Update (4/5/2017). The latest class of hearing assistive technology (HAT) trainers gathered from across the country at the HLAA national office in Bethesda, Maryland from March 31 - April 2 for the culmination of the coursework required to become an N-CHATT trainer.. N-CHATT (Network of Consumer Hearing Assistive Technology Trainers) is a volunteer train-the-trainer program. The programs goal is to build a network of consumer trainers with the knowledge and skills necessary to train others with hearing loss. We never cease to be amazed at how few consumers with hearing loss know and understand how they can benefit from hearing assistive technology. N-CHATT trainers throughout the country provide consumers with the information they need to help them find both technical and non-technical solutions for their hearing difficulties.. The weekend marked the end of the trainers intensive coursework, having spent the last eight months actively participating in our online program. They came together in ...

There is a political drive in the UK to use assistive technologies such as telehealth and telecare as an innovative and efficient approach to healthcare delivery. However, the success of implementation of such services remains dependent on the ability to engage the wider population to adopt these services. It has been widely acknowledged that low acceptance of technology, forms a key barrier to adoption although findings been mixed. Further, it remains unclear what, if any barriers exist between patients and how these compare to those who have declined or withdrawn from using these technologies. This research aims to address this gap focusing on the UK based Cambridgeshire Community Services Assistive Telehealth and Telecare service, an integrated model of telehealth and telecare. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted between 1st February 2014 and 1st December 2014, to explore the views and experiences of users and non-users using this service. Users were defined as patients who

The project aims to develop a new self-adapting interface device - a Laser Mouse - for use by severely mobility impaired persons.. The principal aim of this project is to study a new, self adapting interface device for use by disabled persons. The Laser Mouse can be used in place of the standard PC mouse or as an interface with communication aids and environmental control systems. An M3S interface is also included to allow interface compatibility with other aids and devices.. The project is concerned with the analysis of the diffraction pattern (speckle) of coherent light falling on a mobile surface. The displacement of this surface can be evaluated to a high level of accuracy. In this way the movement of the head or limb can be tracked and converted into the movement of a PC mouse. The interesting features of this approach to the interface problem, is that the motion detection system is adaptive, preserving the natural posture of the user, and is fully configurable for those with limited or ...
Anna Rourke argues that the country needs a new approach to giving disabled people a voice Technology that can change the lives of those who struggle to communicate or control their environment because of physical andor communication disabilities is known as assisstive technology. Anyone who has ever taught a child with special educational needs will know the huge difference gadgets such as touch-screens, switches and text-to-speech synthesisers can make to their quality of life. Assistive technology means that even people with severe physical disabilities can communicate, participate and learn with others in a classroom. Yet, despite its importance, it can be a lottery when it comes to assistive technology provision. For example, a child may get excellent provision in their primary years but find that there is little or no co-ordinated support when they move up to secondary school. What we need is consistent and coherent provision - for all. The first thing we need to do is make people aware of ...
The central pressure vessel of the command module was its sole habitable compartment. It had an interior volume of 210 cubic feet (5.9 m3) and housed the main control panels, crew seats, guidance and navigation systems, food and equipment lockers, the waste management system, and the docking tunnel. Dominating the forward section of the cabin was the crescent-shaped main display panel measuring nearly 7 feet (2.1 m) wide and 3 feet (0.91 m) tall. It was arranged into three panels, each emphasizing the duties of each crew member. The mission commanders panel (left side) included the velocity, attitude, and altitude indicators, the primary flight controls, and the main FDAI (Flight Director Attitude Indicator). The CM pilot served as navigator, so his control panel (center) included the Guidance and Navigation computer controls, the caution and warning indicator panel, the event timer, the Service Propulsion System and RCS controls, and the environmental control system controls. The LM pilot ...
The survey has identified barriers to clinical use of ATs, but understanding them is fundamental to overcoming them. Much can be learnt from the wider field. For example, Reynaud (2008), proposed different models of acceptance (an attitude) and adoption (a process) of technologies from the fields of information systems and sociology [38]. These models can be applied to any technology type, but can also be specialised to individual technologies. Acceptance models, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) [39, 40], suggests that when users are presented with a new technology a number of factors influence their decision about how and when they will use it, including perceived usefulness (the extent to which a person believes that using a particular system would enhance their performance) and perceived ease-of-use (the extent to which a person believes that using a particular system would be free from effort). This model, which has been updated several times [41-43], corresponds with the ...

Stroke patients often suffer from persistent physical, psychological, and motor dysfunction, which severely affect their independence in daily life. Therefore, restoration of independent ambulatory ability is one of the most important goals in stroke rehabilitation. To achieve such a goal, ambulation aids are important and necessary devices to assist their ambulatory ability or ambulation training. Whereas the use of ambulation assistive devices promotes early mobility and facilitates early restoration of function for these patients, improper or prolonged use of these devices may inevitably cause negative training effects, such as patients may become over-dependent upon the assistance offered by these devices. The formation of such dependence would hinder the progress of stroke patients to achieve the ultimate goal of independent walking without any assistive devices. To assess the influences of using ambulation assistive devices, it is therefore imperative that clinicians closely and ...

Baby science is interdisciplinary research investigating how infants understand and communicate with the surrounding world. Therefore, medical music therapy based on baby science (baby-science-based music ...

A US study from 2010 (see below) found that rollators is a useful tool to help COPD sufferers gain extra mobility.. It noted that A rollator improves the biomechanical efficiency of walking and breathing, repositioning the body forwards, anchoring the upper extremities, and assuming a small amount of the users weight.. The breathing difficulties caused by COPD can make it difficult for sufferers to exercise and even short strolls can be hard to manage - this in turn often leads to increasing isolation for people suffering from COPD.. There are however ways to safely include exercise, and this forms a big part of the treatment for COPD.. In addition to making it easier for the user to walk by offering balance support and stability, the rollator gave the people in the study an added sense of safety.. In the study, both users (86%) and infrequent users (91%) indicated that the rollator improved their quality of life.. ...

Congress has stated that it is the policy of the United States to provide assistance to individuals with disabilities to lead productive work lives.[1] Congress has also found that Americans with significant disabilities often are unable to obtain health care insurance that provides coverage of the services and supports that enable them to live independently and enter or rejoin the workforce.[2] Personal assistance services (such as attendant services, personal assistance with transportation to and from work, reader services, job coaches, and related assistance) may remove many of the barriers between significant disability and work. Coverage for such services is a powerful and proven tool for individuals with significant disabilities to obtain and retain employment.[3] For individuals with disabilities, the fear of losing health care and related services is one of the greatest barriers keeping individuals from maximizing their employment, earnings potential, and independence. Recognizing these ...
Forty-six years ago today, NASA Astronaut Leroy Gordon Cooper successfully returned to the Earth following a 22-orbit mission. Designated Mercury-Atlas No. 9 (MA-9), Coopers flight was the final orbital space mission of the Mercury Program. It began with lift-off from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 13:04 hours GMT on Wednesday, 15 May 1963. Splashdown of his Faith 7 spacecraft occurred 70 miles southeast of Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, 16 May 1963. Mission total elapsed time was 34 hours 19-minutes 49-seconds. While the first 19 orbits of the MA-9 mission were mostly unremarkable, the final three orbits tested Coopers mettle and piloting skills. By the time that he manually initiated ripple-firing of the retro motors at the end of the 22nd orbit, Cooper was flying a dead spacecraft. The electrical system was not functioning, the environmental control system was saturated with carbon dioxide, and even the mission clock was inoperative. Temperatures in the spacecraft exceeded ...

In this study, we evaluated the effects on subjective discomfort among cooks during food preparation through use of a standing aid that we developed to alleviate the workload on the low back in the forward-bent posture. Twelve female cooks who worked in a kitchen in a nursing home were asked to prepare foods in 2 working postures: (a) supported by the standing aid (Aid) and (b) without the aid (No aid). They were instructed to evaluate discomfort in 13-body regions during food preparation and the degree of fatigue at the days end and to enter their ratings after the end of the workday. Since a significant correlation was observed between body height and the improvement effect of discomfort through use of the standing aid, cooks were divided into two groups according to the height, and ratings were analyzed in each group. Among the tall cooks, subjective discomfort in the low back and the front and back of thighs was significantly less with the Aid posture than with the No aid posture. However, in short
