Title: Medical Music Therapy Based on Baby Science (Baby-Science-Based Music Therapy) and Assistive Technology for Children. VOLUME: 3 ISSUE: 3. Author(s): Tohshin Go. Affiliation:Department of Infants Brain and Cognitive Development, Tokyo Womens Medical University, 8-1 Kawada- cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 162-8666, Japan.. Keywords:Music therapy, baby science, developmental disorder, neuromuscular disorder, assistive technology, infant studies. Abstract: Music is a good tool to communicate with children no matter what kinds of disorders they have because therapists can interact with them via music and musical instruments without using a single word. Verbal and physical abilities are limited in patients who are physically, cognitively, and socially disabled. Babies also have a similar limitation. Baby science is interdisciplinary research investigating how infants understand and communicate with the surrounding world. Therefore, medical music therapy based on baby science (baby-science-based music ...
We worked with a research librarian to obtain guidance on scoping reviews, database choices, and development of search strings. Databases searched for this study were PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. RefWorks bibliographic software provided the platform for data storage and review. Acquired memory impairment commonly occurs after acquired brain injury such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, seizure disorder and encephalitis and is one the defining features of progressive disorders, such as Alzheimers disease. There is a growing body of knowledge about the use of compensatory memory aids in the rehabilitation of memory disorders. This study investigated the effect of the systematic training of compensatory memory aids on everyday memory performance within a Memory Aids Clinic, a specialised outpatient clinic which supplied and trained the use of memory aids. A comparison was made between subjects with acquired memory disorders in a treatment group (n=63) and control group (n = 28) in a between subjects design. All subjects underwent a baseline session which was comprised of a neuropsychological assessment, clinical interview and goal setting session. Treatment subjects then underwent three training sessions, matching memory aids to goals, across a six week period. Training ...

A US study from 2010 (see below) found that rollators is a useful tool to help COPD sufferers gain extra mobility.. It noted that A rollator improves the biomechanical efficiency of walking and breathing, repositioning the body forwards, anchoring the upper extremities, and assuming a small amount of the users weight.. The breathing difficulties caused by COPD can make it difficult for sufferers to exercise and even short strolls can be hard to manage - this in turn often leads to increasing isolation for people suffering from COPD.. There are however ways to safely include exercise, and this forms a big part of the treatment for COPD.. In addition to making it easier for the user to walk by offering balance support and stability, the rollator gave the people in the study an added sense of safety.. In the study, both users (86%) and infrequent users (91%) indicated that the rollator improved their quality of life.. ...

Congress has stated that it is the policy of the United States to provide assistance to individuals with disabilities to lead productive work lives.[1] Congress has also found that Americans with significant disabilities often are unable to obtain health care insurance that provides coverage of the services and supports that enable them to live independently and enter or rejoin the workforce.[2] Personal assistance services (such as attendant services, personal assistance with transportation to and from work, reader services, job coaches, and related assistance) may remove many of the barriers between significant disability and work. Coverage for such services is a powerful and proven tool for individuals with significant disabilities to obtain and retain employment.[3] For individuals with disabilities, the fear of losing health care and related services is one of the greatest barriers keeping individuals from maximizing their employment, earnings potential, and independence. Recognizing these ...
Forty-six years ago today, NASA Astronaut Leroy Gordon Cooper successfully returned to the Earth following a 22-orbit mission. Designated Mercury-Atlas No. 9 (MA-9), Coopers flight was the final orbital space mission of the Mercury Program. It began with lift-off from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 13:04 hours GMT on Wednesday, 15 May 1963. Splashdown of his Faith 7 spacecraft occurred 70 miles southeast of Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, 16 May 1963. Mission total elapsed time was 34 hours 19-minutes 49-seconds. While the first 19 orbits of the MA-9 mission were mostly unremarkable, the final three orbits tested Coopers mettle and piloting skills. By the time that he manually initiated ripple-firing of the retro motors at the end of the 22nd orbit, Cooper was flying a dead spacecraft. The electrical system was not functioning, the environmental control system was saturated with carbon dioxide, and even the mission clock was inoperative. Temperatures in the spacecraft exceeded ...

In this study, we evaluated the effects on subjective discomfort among cooks during food preparation through use of a standing aid that we developed to alleviate the workload on the low back in the forward-bent posture. Twelve female cooks who worked in a kitchen in a nursing home were asked to prepare foods in 2 working postures: (a) supported by the standing aid (Aid) and (b) without the aid (No aid). They were instructed to evaluate discomfort in 13-body regions during food preparation and the degree of fatigue at the days end and to enter their ratings after the end of the workday. Since a significant correlation was observed between body height and the improvement effect of discomfort through use of the standing aid, cooks were divided into two groups according to the height, and ratings were analyzed in each group. Among the tall cooks, subjective discomfort in the low back and the front and back of thighs was significantly less with the Aid posture than with the No aid posture. However, in short

Broken bones and head trauma, with only 5% of patients wearing helmets, are among the serious injuries documented by a UCLA Medical Center study of electric scooter riders seeking emergency room treatment in Westwood and Santa Monica - findings that support anecdotal reports by local doctors and lawyers that scooter injuries have become an ongoing problem.. The UCLA study published Jan. 25 in the peer-reviewed medical research journal JAMA Network Open accounts for 249 patients treated for scooter-related injuries at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica and UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center between Sept. 1, 2017, and Aug. 31, 2018. The vast majority of patients had been riding scooters, but 11 were pedestrians hit by a scooter, five had tripped over a parked scooter, and five had been attempting to lift or carry a scooter not in use.. The average age of the patients was 33, 10.8% were younger than 18, and 4.8% had a blood alcohol level higher than 0.05 or were perceived to be intoxicated by a ...

Cognitive deficits in executive functioning are among the most frequent sequelae after traumatic brain injury (TBI) at all levels of severity. Due to these functional deficits in cognition, individuals with TBI often experience difficulties in performing instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), especially those IADLs that involve a sequence of goal-directed actions. We obtained updated information on the use of assistive technology for cognition (ATC) through a survey study among twenty-nine participants with TBI. Results highlighted the needs to support the development and evaluation of ATC in assisting multi-step tasks. Cooking tasks were selected as a representative for they are cognitively demanding and have been identified essential for living independently. With the recent advance in sensing and smart home technologies, its possible to provide context-aware prompts with minimal user inputs. However, limited information is known regarding what types of context-aware prompts are ...
If youve had to watch your parents transition into assisted living, you may have no desire to call such a place home. You are not alone. According to the Aging in Place Housing Survey conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), more than 90 percent of seniors want to remain in their home.. Many survey respondents said that they would rather use nursing home funds towards purchasing a home that is suited for aging in place or making accessible home modifications. Youve probably heard the buzzwords - aging in place, non-assisted living, universal design - these phrases mean the same thing: growing older in your home. Today, home modifications can help you continue to live in your home as you age. Plus, aging-in-place home modifications are much less expensive than moving into a nursing home or assisted living facility.. The problem is that most existing homes are not conducive to aging in place. There are more than 100 million homes in the United States. However, only one ...

Have you often wondered how an OT can be involved in helping someone determine the environmental changes they need in their home?. OT s work with a range of clients of all ages from different backgrounds and they bring their knowledge of health conditions and disabilities to this home modification process.. OTs can visit a persons accommodation to interview and observe them doing a range of activities within and outside the home. The OT notes the barriers that the person may experience as they use their equipment and/or manage with carers. When appropriate, measurements are taken of the persons reach range, eye height, their equipment and the space required to accommodate the equipment and carer. The OT can come up with a range of options to consider prior to recommending a home modification. These options may include suggesting an alternative way to do an activity, recommending the use of a piece of equipment or considering carer support. OTs often collaborate with architects and/or builders ...
The main findings show that the majority of assistive devices were in use, but half needed repair. Patients were most dissatisfied with the comfort and dimensions of their assistive device. They reported pain related to use of assistive devices as a major problem and pain was the variable most strongly associated with satisfaction with assistive device; this needs to be addressed. Participants had difficulties or could not walk at all on uneven ground, walk up and down hills, and on stairs; improvements to low-cost technology need to be made. The strongest association with satisfaction with service was country. In Sierra Leone, participants were less satisfied than in Malawi with service delivery and follow-up services and had less ability to walk on uneven ground.. When investigating the usage of prosthetic and orthotic devices, about 90% of the prosthetic and orthotic devices were in use by participants. Our study showed similar results to those of preceding studies, and confirmed that the ...

Moritoh is developing POPO, a walking aid that enables walking practice while reducing the load from the users body weight.. Until now, there hasnt been a load-reducing walking aid - a device that lets users walk while reducing the load from their body weight. During the last 2-3 years, suspension walking lifts have become commonly used for rehabilitation in Japan. A machine that suspends from overhead to reduce the load from body weight needs to be large. So were developing POPO as a new kind of walking aid - one thats as compact as possible.. In Japan, when people start having difficulty walking, they end up using wheelchairs at a comparatively early stage. Thats true in hospitals as well. People use all kinds of walking aids, but if theres concern that theyll have an accident and make their condition worse, they immediately switch to a wheelchair. When that happens, theres a strong tendency for whatever core functionality people have to deteriorate. Weve developed this machine to ...
Much attention was paid on human centered design strategies for environmental control systems of indoor built environments. The goal is to achieve thermally comfortable, healthy and safe working or living environments in energy efficient manners. Normally building Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems have fixed operating settings, which cant satisfy human thermal comfort requirements under transient and non-uniform indoor thermal environments. Therefore, human thermal physiology signal such as skin temperature, which can reflect human body thermal sensation, has to be measured over time. Several trials have been performed by minimizing measuring sensors such as i-Button and mounting measuring sensors into wearable devices such as glasses. Infrared thermography technology has also been tried to achieve non-invasive measurements. However, it would be much more convenient and feasible if normal computer camera could record images, which could be used to obtain human thermal ...

Assistive software that recolors images for individuals with color vision deficiency relies on models of the color differentiation abilities of its intended users. Situation-specific models address the shortcomings of current assumption-based models by using in-situ calibration to capture the color differentiation abilities of a specific user in a specific environment. However, this calibration procedure is time consuming, and when the user is unable to perform it, the assistive software fails to recolor properly. To address this problem, we propose a collection of situation-specific models--Multiple Model Aggregation (MMA)--that can be used to instantly provide the best previously-generated model to the assistive software with no input required from the user. Design challenges for extending MMA to any model-based system are also presented.. ...
Although I recommend getting input from many sources before purchasing big ticket items like wheelchairs and scooters, I want to provide you with enough background knowledge so you will know what questions to ask. As with any new subject, sometimes we arent aware of what we dont know and a little advance information can help you to formulate some questions.. You need to anticipate what your physical condition will be in the future. A power scooter requires enough leg and trunk strength to transfer on and off the seat. You also need adequate trunk balance, arm strength to reach forward to the tiller and hand strength to operate the tiller. If you are experiencing increasing weakness in any of these areas, consider purchasing a power wheelchair.. When choosing a scooter, safety issues are the top priority. Be sure the base is very sturdy and cant be tipped over easily. Four-wheel scooters give greater stability for outdoor use but have a larger turning radius which makes them inappropriate for ...

Whether at home or work, PAS can be essential to employment success. Recognizing this, ODEP works to expand and raise awareness of employment-related PAS options. Because allergies develop over time with continued exposure to allergens, the doctor also may suggest taking precautions now so your child doesnt develop new allergies. For example, dust mites might not be a trigger, but could become one with continued exposure - so controlling them now could help prevent them from becoming an allergy trigger.. Here are suggested environmental control measures for different allergens and irritants:. ...

At the same time, the GENIUS girls are working on developing a more complex backup camera system for another friend with SMA (and a fellow Girl Scout), 14-year-old Chessa Birrell of Acworth, Ga.. Unlike Quinn, who can move his arms and push buttons, Chessa has limited use of her arms and hands, and will need to utilize a special switch to activate her backup camera.. Weve learned that the way the system was mounted on Quinns chair wont work on Chessas, Lydia Kedzierski said. The GENIUS girls have been learning about assistive technologies for people with limited use of their hands as they gather the materials for Chessas camera, which they plan to install in the next few weeks.. The girls received donations and discounts to obtain most of the materials needed for both backup camera systems. Other components were purchased with money they raised for the project. The estimated cost for the camera and monitor was about $120.. The project has been tremendously beneficial, Kedzierski said, not ...

Advances in medicine and technology are helping people live longer despite advanced age and previously life-ending traumatic injuries. Assistive technology has provided some independence and improved quality of life, but many chronic conditions lack effective preventative medical treatment or cure, and strain our healthcare systems. An increasing array of technological innovations are available to patients and care givers to support self-management, maintenance of functional abilities and care delivery, but their practical application remains critical targets for research, education and service. The Disability, Aging and Technology Cluster will take advantage of Floridas ideal living laboratory to design, develop and disseminate practical and affordable interventions to help reintegrate people while promoting health and well-being. The cluster also will enhance positive physical and psycho-social determinants of health, inform policy and develop technological innovations through ...

Eight years ago, Robyn Winston Cohen, CTRS, founded Kids in Action after families expressed frustration with the lack of opportunities for kids with disabilities to play sports and participate in other recreational activities. Cohen funded the first adaptive T-ball and soccer sessions out of her own pocket. The kids-and their parents-loved it. Soon the program was formalized through HSC and sponsors came on board.. Today, Kids in Action provides a variety of adaptive sports and social activities for children and young adults with disabilities four years and older and their siblings. The events, supervised by recreational therapists, physical therapists, (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), speech therapists, and assistive technology practitioners, aim to increase physical abilities, including gait, stamina, strength, and balance. The programs provide more than exercise, however.. If you ask any of my kids if they are doing any sort of therapy they would say, No, Cohen said. If you were to ...
