Germinated seeds floated on water for 3 d, and after were transferred to float on Yoshidas nutrient solution for 11 d. two weeks after sowing, the seedling was transferred to nutrient solution containing 51.19 mM NaCl (electrical conductivity 6 dSm-1) for 7 d, then NaCl concentration was increased to 163.8 mM (12 dSm-1) for further 7 d. After this period, the traits were measured. The linkage map was performed using F8 populations, 40 SSR markers, 16 ISSR markers (76 alleles), 2 IRAP markers (7 alleles) and iPBS marker (3 alleles). The map length was 1419 cM with an average distance of 13.07 cM between the 2 adjacent markers. Rice crop is sensitive to cold stress at seedling stage. A panel of population representing 304 shortlisted germplasm lines was studied for seedling stage chilling tolerance in indica rice. Six phenotypic classes were exposed to six low temperature stress regimes under control phenotyping facility to investigate response pattern. A panel of sixty six genotypes representing all phenotypic classes was used for ensuring genetic diversity, population structure and association mapping for the trait using 58 simple sequence repeat (SSR) and 2 direct trait linked markers. A moderate level of genetic diversity was detected in the panel population for the trait. Deviation of Hardy-Weinbergs expectation was detected in the studied population using Wrights F statistic. The panel showed 30% variation among population and 70% among individuals. The entire population was categorized into three sub-populations through STRUCTURE analysis. Salt stress is one of the major abiotic stress which severely limits plant growth and reduces crop productivity across the world. In the present study, the effects of exogenous pyridoxal-5-phosphate (vitamin B6, VB6) on seedling growth and development of wheat under salt stress were investigated. The results showed that exogenous application of pyridoxal-5-phosphate (VB6) significantly increased the RWC, biomass, the concentration of photosynthetic pigments, proline, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), together with decreasing the content of Malondiadehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in wheat leaves under salt stress. Rhynchosporium secalis can overcome a single resistance gene of barley in a relatively short period of time. Novel genes and quantitative trait locis (QTLs) are therefore vital to control scald in barley. A population of 220 double haploid lines was developed from a cross of Vlamingh and WABAR2147, where Vlamingh showed adult plant resistance (APR) and WABAR2147 showed seedling resistance to a group of isolates. The population was tested for APR to scald under natural infection in two consecutive seasons in addition to a seedling screen with three isolates. One single gene was mapped to chromosome 6H based on the seedling test, and two QTLs (QSc.VlWa.4H and QSc.VlWa.6H) were mapped to chromosomes 4H and 6H based on APR. Epistatic interaction was observed between the two QTLs, and environment/QTL interaction was only observed for QSc.VlWa.6H which co-segregated with the seedling resistance gene and contributed to basal resistance against scald during whole growth stages. We can measure the useful light to a plant (PAR - photosynthetically active radiation, or the parts of light that the plant can use to photosynthesize) in micromoles per meter square per second (micromoles/sec-m2) . The goal here is to deliver 120-150 micromoles/sec-m2 of PAR to your seedlings.. Some people will use a PAR meter to figure out how much PAR theyre getting to their seedlings, and will adjust the distance of their lights based on that measurement. In this paper, the dimensional synthesis of seedling pick-up mechanism with planetary gear train was studied based on the data of given key points and the trajectory of the endpoint of seedling pick-up mechanism. Given the positions and orientations requirements of the five key points, the study first conducted a dimensional synthesis of the linkage size and center of rotation. No matter what medium is used for starting seeds, it should drain well and have a fairly low pH. Mixes with a pH of 6.4 or less are not as susceptible to damping off as those with a higher pH.. They also bend out toward the light. Florescent lights are cooler with full spectrum light and you put the bulbs within an inch of the top of the plant. It does not burn the leaves and makes the seedling stems compact and strong. A cheap shop light will do the trick so no need to buy an expensive lighting system. We describe the results of four laboratory studies designed to measure the effect of temperature and wireworm appetence, weight, and degree of Metarhizium infection on their ability to damage wheat seedlings. Wireworm activity, measured from wireworm speed, increased linearly from 6 to 18 °C and leveled off thereafter. Plant emergence and growth increased exponentially from 6 to 22 °C for wheat cultivars AC Barrie and AC Unity VB. Discussion. Pythium myriotylum and P. volutum were identified as the most aggressive species causing root rot of tobacco seedlings. Pythium myriotylum has been previously reported as the principal species causing this disease (2,4,7). In our study P. volutum was the second most frequently observed species. This is the first report of this Pyhtium species affecting tobacco seedlings. P. dissotocum, P. irregulare, and P. spinosum were also isolated from seedlings that developed root discoloration, but these species did not significantly reduce the production of usable transplants. The pathogen was not recovered in a large percentage of seedlings with visual root discoloration. We conducted a two-year study to assess the aboveground interactions between Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), grand fir (Abies grandis) and noble fir (Abies procera) seedlings planted in closely spaced (stems 10 cm apart) conspecific and heterospecific pairs. Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) seedlings were placed in three grades based on number of first-order-lateral roots. The grades were poor, medium, and good and had numbers of 0 to 6, 7 to 11, 12, and > 12, respectively. Eighty seedlings from each group were either underplanted or established in an adjacent clearcut on a high-quality mesic site in North Carolina. There were 240 seedlings outplanted on each area. A greenhouse research was conducted at the research area of Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad to evaluate 20 accessions for the identification of salt tolerant genotypes of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) as well as their characteristics. The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design with three repeats. Salinity was developed with NaCl to achieve the final levels of 3, 6 and 9 dsm-1 salinity, whereas control contained tap water. After 60 days of planting, 10 seedlings of each accession from each treatment and replication were uprooted and data was recorded. Sunflower genotypes G-36, G-61, A-23, A-61 and A-185 performed better in both controlled and saline conditions. These genotypes showed better shoot and root growth and biomass by least concentration of Na+ and higher concentration of Cl- in leaf sap.   Key words: Tap water, NaCl, replication, leaf sap.

The effect of defoliation and consecutive defoliation (condefoliation) of rye seedlings on the allocation patterns of biomass and hydroxamic acids (Hx) was evaluated five days after treatment. Growth of condefoliated seedlings was lower than that of defoliated and nondefoliated ones. Concentration of Hx decreased in shoots of condefoliated seedlings compared to nondefoliated ones, while concentration of Hx in root exudates increased. Allocation of Hx to roots and root exudates increased at the expense of allocation to the shoots in condefoliated seedlings. The ratio of Hx-aglucone to Hx-glucoside was higher in shoots of defoliated and condefoliated seedlings. The decrease in quantity of defense in shoots was accompanied by an increase in its quality, given that aglucones are more toxic than glucosides. The increase in concentration of Hx-an allelopathic compound also involved in mineral uptake by roots-in root exudates of condefoliated seedlings was suggested to lead to an advantage in the acquisition
Seedling root traits of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) have been shown to be important for efficient establishment and linked to mature plant traits such as height and yield. A root phenotyping pipeline, consisting of a germination paper-based screen combined with image segmentation and analysis software, was developed and used to characterize seedling traits in 94 doubled haploid progeny derived from a cross between the winter wheat cultivars Rialto and Savannah. Field experiments were conducted to measure mature plant height, grain yield, and nitrogen (N) uptake in three sites over 2 years. In total, 29 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for seedling root traits were identified. Two QTLs for grain yield and N uptake co-localize with root QTLs on chromosomes 2B and 7D, respectively. When we first moved onto acreage, we were in the great rolling hills northeast of Colorado Springs. Our property was not treed and the only growth to speak of was weeds. Radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. Redondo Vermelho) seedlings were analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy to characterize the anatomical and morphological changes caused by the exposure to 0.5 or 1.0 mM CdCl2 for 24, 48 and 72 h. The analyses showed changes in the anatomical and morphological characteristics of roots, stems and leaves of two-week-old seedlings. In all tissues, loss of cell turgidity was observed. Premature death with disintegration of the epidermis and an increase in number of root hairs were observed in roots exposed to the heavy metal. The stems of seedlings exposed to cadmium exhibited an increased number of cells in the cambial layer. The main effects observed in leaves were stomatal closure, increase in chloroplast size and number, followed by a decrease in number of chloroplasts in response to the metal toxicity. I transplant the seedlings at this point into the 4x6 plastic flats used by nursery men for bedding plants. The seedlings are planted on 1 centers in rows one inch apart using a mixture of fine leaf mold and peat. This mixture is porous and the small seedlings seem to start out fast. The little plants are watered in when they are planted and the flats are covered for one or two days to avoid shock. Again, Captan is used if needed. After one to two months, the seedlings are transplanted again into regular cedar flats on two or 2½ centers in rows 2 to 2½ apart. I use the same mixture of leaf mold and peat moss, watering the plants in and at this time using Millers Booster Powder either added to the soil mixture or in the water used to water the plants in. I try to get the flats into a lath house quite early, to get the largest plants possible by fall as the larger the plants the better the chances of them surviving their first winter. The effect of three moisture levels and three shade regimes on the growth of D x P ex Kusi oil palm seedlings was investigated at the Oil Palm Research Institute, Kusi between July 1998 and February 2000 in a factorial experiment laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. The moisture treatments investigated were W1 (50-60 % field capacity), W2 (65-75 % field capacity) and W3 (80-90 % field capacity). The shade treatments investigated were S1 (0 % shade), S2 (50 % shade) and S3 (75 % shade). Data was collected on leaf number per plant, plant height, butt circumference and leaf area as well as dry weight of plant parts and total dry matter. There were significant effects due to shade and shade x moisture interactions on seedling growth. Seedlings under 50% shade (50% full sunlight) in combination with low moisture supply (50-60% field capacity) were comparable in growth to those under 0% shade (100% full sunlight) with high moisture supply (80-90% field capacity). The goal of this research is to develop automatic techniques for identifying defects in Douglas-fir veneer. To achieve this goal, computer vision techniques, in particular image-processing, will be applied. Several pre-processing steps may be required to enhance images in making further analysis easier, faster, and more reliable. Pre-processing is often necessary when analyzing natural materials due to the amount of complex variation present. However, if such analysis is associated with several compute-intensive passes over a large data set, the possibilities of what can be achieved, is very limited. It is advantageous to reduce the data in a way that little or no information is lost that may affect the image analysis. This reduced image is then used in subsequent analysis to determine the actual type of defect, its extent and exact location. In dicot Arabidopsis thaliana embryos two cotyledons develop largely autonomously from the shoot apical meristem (SAM). Recessive mutations in the Arabidopsis receptor-like kinase RPK1 lead to monocotyledonous seedlings, with low (10 %) penetrance due to complex functional redundancy. In strong rpk1 alleles, about 10 % of these (i. e. 1 % of all homozygotes) did not develop a SAM. We wondered whether RPK1 might also control SAM gene expression and SAM generation in addition to its known stochastic impact on cell division and PINFORMED1 (PIN1) polarity in the epidermis. SAM-less seedlings developed a simple morphology with a straight and continuous hypocotyl-cotyledon structure lacking a recognizable epicotyl. According to rpk1s auxin-related PIN1 defect, the seedlings displayed defects in the vascular tissue. Powders from germinated seedlings of wheat, barley, rapeseed, maize, and linola synthesized low molecular weight flavor esters in an organic medium (hexane). Direct esterification of acetic, butyric, and caproic acids, with ethanol, butanol, isopentanol, or (Z)-3- hexen-l-ol was achieved. Of the systems examined, germinated rapeseed showed the highest degree of flavor synthesis. (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl butyrate and (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl caproate were produced with yields of about 96%. Butyl butyrate, isopentyl butyrate, butyl caproate and isopentyl caproate were produced at 80% yield. Linola seedling powder gave yields of ≤63% for ethyl acetate and butyl acetate. More moderate (40%) yields were obtained with barley and maize seedling powders.
