The association between the consumption of seafood and its benefits on cardiovascular (CVD) risk can be challenged by its heavy metal (HM) content. This study aimed to explore the association of seafood consumption and its estimated HM contents with the lipid profile and lipid oxidation biomarkers in adults from a Spanish Mediterranean area who do not present risk factors for CVD. In this cross-sectional study, the clinical history, three-day dietary record, lipid profile (LDLc, HDLc, APOB/A, and triglyceride levels), plasma oxidised LDL (oxLDL) and 8-isoprostane levels of 81 adults without risk factors for CVD [43% men, with a mean age of 43.6 years (95%CI: 40.1-47.1)] were assessed. The HM [arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb)] contents of seafood were estimated according to data from analyses of marine species in the same Mediterranean area. Moderate adherence to the Mediterranean diet (score: 4.6 of 9) with a mean seafood consumption of 74.9g/day (95%CI: 59.9-89.9), ...

This lecture will discuss risks, benefits, sustainability, and cost as they relate to different species of seafood; gaps in the scientific literature; and the Long Island Study of Seafood Consumption, an ongoing study at Stony Brook University, to assess risks and benefits among avid fish consumers. Jaymie Meliker Choosing which types of seafood to eat is not simple, says Dr. Meliker. In addition to balancing cost and quality, as we do for all foods, the educated consumer might also consider sustainability of the fish species, and human health risks and benefits. Seafood provide important nutrients, most notably n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have been shown to confer benefits to brain and visual system development, and reduce risk of heart disease. However, seafood can also be a source of contaminants, perhaps most importantly, methylmercury, a known neurotoxicant ...

A recent advisory from the American Heart Association adds to existing guidelines on the heart-health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.. Published in the journal Circulation, this statement focused specifically on the benefits of seafood consumption in an effort to provide clear recommendations for a heart-healthy diet.. Omega-3 fatty acids, formally known as n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, are healthy fats naturally contained in certain foods like flaxseed and fish. Theyre believed to have a protective effect on heart health and are currently recommended to reduce risk for heart disease.. But how much seafood should be consuming to achieve those heart-health benefits?. According to the latest statement, experts recommend consuming seafood at least one to two times a week-especially species that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon and tuna. Evidence has linked 1-2 servings of seafood a week to reduced risk of heart disease, stroke and death. The benefits could be especially promising ...
With seafood prices going through the roof, finding the best deal is key.. While there are a variety of ways to find seafood in the marketplace, the first thing you need to know is where its from.. For starters, you want to know where the fish is grown.. You can get a good idea of the quality of a fish by taking it to a commercial breeder or buying it from a wholesale market.. Then you need a way to compare it to the other seafood available.. How do you compare a raw, frozen or canned fish to the seafood youre buying?. Here are the three key factors that determine the quality and price of seafood in a store or online: Size and weight The size and weight of the fish, which can vary by size and species, are critical for determining how much the fish will cost.. For example, frozen fish will generally be more expensive than fresh, and the price will likely vary depending on the size of the freezer.. Scottish seafood processors have not be left without government support during the COVID-19 pandemic. A £10-million scheme, called the Scottish Seafood Business Resilience Fund, provides a combination of grants and loans to seafood-processing businesses suffering severe hardship following the shutdown of international markets and the food service industry across the UK.. Shellfish and seafood processing businesses have been greatly impacted owing to early collapse of Chinese and Asian export markets, as well as of the EU market. They have also suffered the brunt of global impacts on the hospitality markets for Scottish seafood.. Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said, Our seafood processors are the lifeblood of many rural and coastal communities, supporting thousands of local jobs and producing some of the finest seafood in the world. The industry has been very clear that cashflow is the critical issue facing businesses and this new fund seeks to inject capital into businesses to help them ...
Tropic Star Seafood, Inc. was established in Lakeland, Florida in 1993. Kevin Coats, the owner, is a seafood expert with over 35 years experience importing and selling seafood. The business originally started out as an importer and distribution center for fresh seafood from Central and South America. Over the past 20 years, Tropic Star Seafood has grown its facility, brought in North American supplies, enabled processing (including filleting, gutting, deboning, skinning and packing) and boosted its refrigerated truck fleet to increase distribution range from Florida to the Midwest. Today, the company is one of Floridas largest seafood-only specialty distributors and the states leader in wild Florida tilapia processing.. The company deals with over 50 local artisanal fishermen who, on a daily basis, unload their catch of Florida wild-caught tilapia. In its state of the art facility, Tropic Star Seafood has made many additions to ensure a grade A product. Aside from importing various other ...
It appears consumers who are not eating or are avoiding seafood simply are unaware of the screening process, said Lucina Lampila, seafood technology specialist with Louisiana Sea Grant and the LSU AgCenter. Currently, Gulf of Mexico seafood is among the most scrutinized foods in the world. When it comes to seafood safety jurisdiction, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries oversees oysters and fish species harvested within state waters, which extend three miles from shore. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) oversees fish species caught in federal waters beyond that three-mile boundary ...
This is a great opportunity for the seafood community to have a seat at the table where trade decisions are made, DeHaan said in an NFI press release. Im thrilled to be able to bring our industrys perspective and guidance to the people in charge of trade policy.. China tariffs tank Alaska seafood. Its been two years since President Trump started a trade war with China by imposing taxes on U.S. seafood going to that country - taxes that are paid by Americans and not the Chinese, as he would have you believe. Seafood comprises well over 30 percent of Alaskas export volume and the ongoing tariffs have added up to huge losses from our biggest trading partner.. An analysis by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute shows that exports to China reached the highest level ever in 2017, at nearly $1 billion ($988 million). By 2018, Alaska seafood exports dropped by $204 million, the largest year over year decrease ever. And by 2019, sales to China were at the lowest level since 2010 at $702 million. ...
January 25, 2021 - If you could peek inside Americas cupboards and refrigerators, youd see tableaus that capture changes wrought by the pandemic: Towers of paper goods, loads of comfort food, caches of upmarket coffee. You might also be surprised to see an unusual amount of seafood.. Frozen seafood sales at U.S. supermarkets and other food retailers rose 26% in the four weeks ended Dec. 27 from a year earlier, according to market research company IRI, far stronger than the 6% growth for consumer packaged goods overall. Fresh seafood sales rose 25% in the same period. That strong result wasnt just a holiday binge: Since the onset of the pandemic, seafood sales growth has tended to outpace that of the grocery store as a whole by a comfortable margin.. The seafood spending surge is an example of the hard-to-foresee ways the pandemic continues to displace and redirect consumer demand. Typically, an outsize share of Americans spending on seafood is at restaurants. Consumers spent $69.6 billion in ...

As a result of diminishing fish stocks and technological advancements, seafoods such as shrimp, salmon, and tilapia are increasingly grown on farms (relatively small tanks or bodies of water) rather than caught in the wild. While beneficial for natural fisheries, this type of aquaculture can pose serious health risks to consumers. Seafood farms are generally extremely crowded and the use and abuse of antibiotics to increase survival rates is prevalent. Additionally, many of these farms are located in lightly regulated countries and regions. The FDA, using the authority provided to it by the Food, Drugs, and Cosmetics Act, has thus taken a significant interest in monitoring the quality and safety of incoming seafoods.. Anresco performs all seafood analyses required by the FDA and has trained personnel across the country ready to sample product from your warehouse or cold storage facility. Getting the texture right was a big focus for every team. Creating a plant-based seafood product with a uniform texture (think tofu) is not going to cut it if the solutions are really hoping to displace seafood. A light and flaky texture that melts in your mouth is one of the signature elements of many seafoods.. We mention collagen above as a potential source of protein, but even more critical is its role in creating the appropriate texture for many seafoods. But to replace collagen is not easy. Gelatin is a readily available substitute, but is not plant-based. Some possible ideas for replacing this vital component include using gelatinous and fibrous foods such as agar, algae, seawood, and lychee. One group also suggested the novel idea of using yeast to make a synthetic form of gelatin.. Other groups sought to fully investigate seafood texture by using advanced tools such as electron microscopes and hyperspectral imaging cameras. With the hyperspectral imaging camera, for example, the team ...

The sea hosts a handful of curiosities in the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of the ocean at approximately 33,000 ft. below sea level. Prior to the 1990s, few thought that an equipment emulating a 198,000 ft. sea immersion or 6 times the depth of the Mariana Trench, would disrupt the seafood industry - until High Pressure Processing (HPP) was introduced.. High Pressure Processing (HPP) is a non-thermal technology that eliminates common seafood pathogens such as Vibrio and Listeria, and slows down the growth of spoilage microorganisms. The use of cold water to generate pressure minimally alters the delicate sensory and nutritional properties of seafood. Therefore, HPP is highly regarded among consumers and processors alike, as it achieves a perfect balance between safety and quality, with a natural approach. The technology has had great success with applications including: fresh pre-cooked crabmeat, desalted cod, marinated tuna, elaborate seafood-based dishes, ready-to-eat seafood meals, the ...
A survey of Gulf Coast seafood consumption habits released today by the Natural Resources Defense Council reveals that many Gulf residents are eating far more seafood, far more often, than the federal government has acknowledged, bringing seafood safety standards under renewed scrutiny. | Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)
LIVING in Andalucia certainly opens up a tasty range of seafood options, and the good news is that the health benefits of eating it are well proven.. Studies show that including one portion of seafood in your weekly diet can reduce the chances of having a heart attack by half.. And while oily fish like salmon and cod is known for its high content of omega-3, seafood options such as prawns, crabs, squid and octopus also contain high levels of this essential fatty acid which is key to a healthy heart.. When consumed in seafood, omega-3 has also been shown to help reduce the risk of dementia and memory problems late in life.. Moreover omega-3 is not the only benefit - seafood also contains many other important vitamins and minerals.. ...
Its clear that environmental activists are not health experts. And when reporters quote activists on health concerns, theyre frequently wrong - especially on seafood.. For example, Got Mercury grossly exaggerates the hypothetical risk of mercury present in commercial seafood. These trace amounts of mercury occur naturally - the byproduct of thermal vents and volcanoes on the ocean floor - and have been present in seafood for millions of years. In fact, the infinitesimal amount of mercury in seafood is the same as it was 90 years ago, according to the FDA.. The fish Americans order at their favorite restaurant or buy from their local grocer is safe to eat. Ten species of fish account for close to 90 percent of the seafood we eat in the United States, and all have low levels of mercury.. For years, medical organizations, government agencies, and independent experts have stressed that eating a variety of fish at least two to three times per week is essential for optimal brain, heart and eye ...

July 29, 2020 - Two major global environmental issues are food contamination and waste disposal. Professor Wong Ming-hung, Advisor (Environmental Science), and Dr. Brian Man Yu-bon, Assistant Professor, at the Department of Science and Environmental Studies at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) have a solution for both.. Contamination and waste disposal are particularly relevant to Hong Kong, which ranks second in per capita seafood consumption in Asia and where, in 2018, over 1.5 kg of waste was sent to landfill sites each day. Eating fish and seafood has important health benefits. They are recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as being important for optimal brain and neurodevelopment in children, as well as lowering the risk of coronary heart disease among adults.. However, contamination can bring along health and environmental risks. This doesnt merely come through polluted seas and rivers: it can also be present in the feed used in fish farms, ...

By 2050 the world will need 60 per cent more food to feed 9 billion people.. Food production is already increasing and, on average, there is actually enough food for everyone, however the distribution of this food is very uneven, explained Dr Anderson.. With wild fish catches stagnating, future growth in seafood production is expected to come from aquaculture.. By 2030, 50 per cent of the total fish harvest will come from aquaculture. Tilapia and shrimp farming will likely increase by 90 per cent and most of the major growth (around 100 per cent increase) will come from India, Latin America and South East Asia.. China is expected to consume 40 per cent of all seafood produced and the biggest tonnage gains will be in mollusc production.. In the US, most of the seafood consumed comes from aquaculture and around 95 per cent is imported.. So how do we get the market to grow?. Firstly we need to increase market share through consistent availability and quality, explained Dr Anderson.. It is also ...
A novel, moderately halophilic, Gram-positive coccus, designated strain S2R53-5T, was isolated from jeotgal, a traditional Korean fermented seafood. The organism was strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-sporulating and catalase- and oxidase-positive. Strain S2R53-5T grew in the presence of 0.5-15 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 6.5-11.0, with optimum growth at 5 % (w/v) NaCl and pH 7.0. The temperature range for growth was 20.0-30.0 °C, with an optimum temperature of 30 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain S2R53-5T belongs to the family Staphylococcaceae and was most closely related to Salinicoccus roseus DSM 5351T (96.8 % gene sequence similarity), Salinicoccus hispanicus DSM 5352T (96.1 %), Salinicoccus alkaliphilus T8T (95.2 %) and Jeotgalicoccus halotolerans YKJ-101T (95.1 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.0 mol%, which is in the range of 46-51 mol% that is characteristic for the genus Salinicoccus. Levels of DNA-DNA relatedness between strain S2R53-5T and S.
Gathering seafood by hand can be as easy as picking shellfish or kelp up off the beach, or doing some digging for clams or crabs, or perhaps diving under the water for abalone or lobsters.. Shellfish can be collected from intertidal areas using a spade or rake and put through a sieve to extract the ones of marketable size.. Seafood can be found in coastal zones as well as rivers and lakes around the world. Seafood suitable for gathering by hand includes aquatic invertebrates such as molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms as well as aquatic plants. Some molluscs (shellfish) commonly gathered are oysters, clams, scallops and cockles. Some crustaceans commonly gathered are lobster, crayfish, and crabs. A common plant gathered is kelp. Echinoderms are not gathered as much as mollusks and crustaceans. In Asia, sea cucumber and sea urchins are gathered. In parts of the United States, mainly the South, catfish, primarily of the flathead species, are occasionally caught by hand in a technique most often ...

Tom Bailey has recently written a wonderful book called The Complete Guide to Northern Gulf Seafood. As a life long chef, I often forget that many people dont have the same amount of knowledge that I do when it comes to all things food related so often my first reaction books such as this is to immediately dismiss it not offering up anything new, but to do so would be to miss the point entirely. Mr. Bailey offers up an encyclopedia of the most important game and commercial seafood found in the northern Gulf waters, but more than that he walks the reader through, not only purchasing and storing the seafood, but goes into detail about the proper way to clean and dress these fish, often giving a number of different options for butchering those same fish. I was impressed in the amount of knowledge Mr. Bailey stuffed into this book and found tidbits of information or tips and techniques that can even help the more experienced of us ...

article{7d0e9995-d18d-4bc3-a2ce-7421358f5b4e, abstract = {,p,Best use of scientific knowledge is required to maintain the fundamental role of seafood in human nutrition. While it is acknowledged that genomic-based methods allow the collection of powerful data, their value to inform fisheries management, aquaculture, and biosecurity applications remains underestimated. We review genomic applications of relevance to the sustainable management of seafood resources, illustrate the benefits of, and identify barriers to their integration. We conclude that the value of genomic information towards securing the future of seafood does not need to be further demonstrated. Instead, we need immediate efforts to remove structural roadblocks and focus on ways that support integration of genomic-informed methods into management and production practices. We propose solutions to pave the way forward. Advancements of genetic technologies now allow the collection of genome-wide data in nonmodel species in a ...

Some of the long-time vendors there told me that the crowds were smaller this year, but that could have been due to multiple reasons. From what we were told, in the past it was tied to a boat festival on the Ohio River, and last year turn out was very good. However, the boat show was cancelled this year due to the economy, and its anyones guess as to if it will come back at all. If thats the case, my vote would be to move this to either late spring or early fall - for me, the thought of buying fresh seafood in 90 degree heat just doesnt appeal, and I LOVE seafood! Personally, I dont understand the reasoning behind having a festival like the Great Inland Seafood Festival during the hottest month of the year.. ...

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has announced that Shellfish De La Mer Ltd. is recalling batches of various seafood products because of a possible link with reported cases of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP).. Initially, two batches of frozen Cooked Mussel Meats in 500g packs sold in Ireland through Dunnes Stores and Tesco Ireland were recalled. The company later extended the recall to include other products containing the implicated mussels. The extended recall now covers 15 batches of a range of Chowder Mixes, a Seafood Mix and Mussel Meat, mostly distributed to caterers or wholesalers.. DSP is a foodborne intoxication caused by okadaic acid toxins produced by marine algae, which then accumulate in filter feeding shellfish like mussels. Symptoms can include diarrhoea and vomiting lasting for several days, but are rarely serious. More information about okadaic acid toxins and DSP can be found in our factsheet.. More details about the product recall can be found on the FSAI ...
The US is one of the largest seafood markets for imported seafood-importing more than 5.3 billion pounds of seafood per year-worth almost $18 billion annually. Unfortunately, there is a problem with the seafood that hits our plates. Right now we simply cannot tell if the fish we eat was legally caught because our current laws are not strong enough to trace from bait to plate. But there is great momentum for change. In December 2016, the US government officially established the Seafood Import Monitoring Program to address illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing products entering the market. The new rule, in effect as of Jan. 1, 2018, sets up reporting and record-keeping requirements for certain seafood products to prevent IUU-caught and/or misrepresented seafood from entering US commerce. This first phase of the program applies to an initial list of imported fish and fish products identified as particularly vulnerable to illegal fishing and fraud. With its influence in the market place the US

We have described the epidemiology of infections associated with seafood consumption in the United States from 1973 to 2006. Seafood-finfish, marine mammals, mollusks, and crustaceans-is an important cause of food-borne illness and outbreaks in the United States. Our analysis identified specific seafood vehicles frequently associated with illness. This information can help to guide future prevention efforts. Seafood-associated outbreaks of infection were most often attributed to consumption of molluscan shellfish, particularly raw oysters, and most often caused Vibrio illnesses and norovirus infections. Over the study period, both the absolute number of outbreaks and the proportion of outbreaks caused by molluscan shellfish increased. Botulism cases associated with fish were also reported frequently, although these outbreaks were reported almost exclusively from Alaska. Etiologies and implicated seafood commodities changed over time during the study period. The cause of these changes is likely ...
Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed Nigeria is still far behind in meeting the set standards of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in fish consumption.
Greater collaboration is needed to secure sustainable seafood. Retailers and suppliers should work together in the interests of securing more sustainable seafood to their customers.. This is one of the key messages in the latest WWF South Africas Sustainable Seafood Initiative (WWF SASSI) Retailer/Supplier Participation Scheme report which was released this week.. The sixth report, which was delayed due to Covid-19, focuses on progress made by the 10 participants in the scheme in 2019. Participants include leading seafood retailers, major supermarket and seafood restaurant chains.. The Retailer/Supplier Participation Scheme was initiated in 2008 as a platform for companies to make public commitments about the responsible sourcing and selling of sustainable seafood. The aim was also to create a strong market incentive for both commercial and small-scale fisheries to improve their production practices so that suppliers could buy from responsibly managed sources hence transforming the seafood ...
Problem statement: Formaldehyde was classified as a potential human carcinogen, identified by the US Environmental Protection Agency and International Agency for Research on Cancer as a Class 2A carcinogen. It also can cause irritation to human. However, formaldehyde present in biological fluids or tissues and environment as a result of natural processes or from man-made sources and can be emitted slowly into the air. Formaldehyde was used in many industries, hospitals and research as a sterilizing and preserving agent. The utmost concern of this study was about the present of formaldehyde in seafood product. Approach: A review was done on the health effect adverse by formaldehyde, formaldehyde toxicity to human, formaldehyde in seafood and methods to control formaldehyde in food and seafood. Google, Pubmed, Science Direct and Scopus were used in preparation of this review. Results: This review clarified that one of the formaldehyde source to human was seafood. Fish consumption is the major dietary source of EPA and DHA, which according to rodent experiments may reduce body fat mass and prevent obesity. Only a few human studies have investigated the association between fish consumption and body-weight gain. We investigated the association between fish consumption and subsequent change in body weight. Women and men (n 344 757) participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition were followed for a median of 5.0 years. Linear and logistic regression were used to investigate the associations between fish consumption and subsequent change in body weight. Among women, the annual weight change was 5.70 (95% CI 4.35, 7.06), 2.23 (95% CI 0.16, 4.31) and 11.12 (95% CI 8.17, 14.08) g/10 g higher total, lean and fatty fish consumption per d, respectively. The OR of becoming overweight in 5 years among women who were normal weight at enrolment was 1.02 (95% CI 1.01, 1.02), 1.01 (95% CI 1.00, 1.02) and 1.02 (95% CI 1.01, 1.04) g/10 g ...
The consumption of marine fishes and general seafood has long been recommended by several medical authorities as a long-term nutritional intervention to preserve mental health, hinder neurodegenerative processes, and sustain cognitive capacities in humans. Most of the neurological benefits provided by frequent seafood consumption comes from adequate uptake of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, n-3/n-6 PUFAs, and antioxidants. Optimal n-3/n-6 PUFAs ratios allow efficient inflammatory responses that prevent the initiation and progression of many neurological disorders. Moreover, interesting in vivo and clinical studies with the marine antioxidant carotenoid astaxanthin (present in salmon, shrimp, and lobster) have shown promising results against free radical-promoted neurodegenerative processes and cognition loss. This review presents the state-of-the-art applications of n-3/n-6 PUFAs and astaxanthin as nutraceuticals against neurodegenerative diseases associated with exacerbated oxidative

Linaman serves it seared as a filet and even as a grilled salmon BLT. But the biggest thing, he says, was getting the hospital away from farmed Atlantic salmon and farmed Columbia River steelhead. A lot of that fish is fed fish chow full of genetically modified ingredients and other garbage that I dont want to eat. So why would I serve it to my customers?. In August, Overlake began to purchase wild albacore tuna from the Seafood Producers Cooperative and also serves Oregon shrimp certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, the worlds leading seafood certifier. And thats where determining whats sustainable runs into head winds for hospitals and consumers alike. Last year MSC came under criticism by environmental organizations and researchers for slapping its blue-and-white fish logo on fisheries that, the critics said, were not always sustainable because they ignored fishing methods and ecosystem health.. Claire Christian, director of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition, was a ...

Fish Factor: Seafood Speciality Products Could Be Worth $700 Million By LAINE WELCH - State seafood marketers are rebranding fish parts as specialty products and mapping a path for millions more dollars in sales. Alaskas fisheries produce more than five billion pounds of seafood each year. When all the fish is headed and gutted or filleted and all the crab legs are clustered, it leaves about three billion pounds of trimmings. Some is turned into meal and oil, but for the most part, the gurry is ground up and discharged into local waterways. Whether thats heads or guts, milt, or meal or oil or something else, it should be held in high regard, said Andy Wink, a seafood economist formerly with the McDowell Group. These are products that are out of our normal range but they are specialty items serving niche markets.. A new Analyses of Alaska Seafood Specialty Products report compiled for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute takes a look at uses for fish heads, oil, meal, internal organs, ...
WASHINGTON, DC October 13, 2020 - The World Trade Organizations authorization of $4 billion in tariffs on U.S. exports to the European Union, as part of a dispute over aid to airplane manufacture Boeing, is bad timing.. Businesses in both the U.S. and EU are focused on economic recovery from the ongoing pandemic. Meanwhile, Trump Administration trade policy makers are working to open more markets for things like iconic American lobster. A levy on seafood, that stems from an unrelated aircraft dispute, distracts from that important work.. A new tariff fight will not help economies rebound or grow the global seafood market.. The National Fisheries Institute calls on negotiators to work to keep these trade barriers from hindering the important progress that has already been made.. John ...
