The modern sculpture movement can be said to begin at the Rodin exhibit at the Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1900. At this event Rodin showed his Burghers of Calais, Balzac, Victor Hugo statues, and the exhibition included the first public showing of his Gates of Hell which included The Thinker.[6][7] Cubist sculpture, in the early 20th century, was a style that developed in parallel with cubist painting, and the formal experiments of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Beginning around 1909 and evolving through the early 1920s cubist artists developed new means of constructing works of art using collage, sculptural assemblage using disparate materials and traditional sculpture making from plaster and clay molds. Some sources name Picassos 1909 bronze Head of a Woman as the first cubist sculpture.[8] Artists like Raymond Duchamp-Villon (1876-1918), whose career was cut short by his death in military service, and Alexander Archipenko, whod arrived in Paris in 1908 and whose 1912 Walking ...

Exhibition. August 1-November 1, 2010. Since its birth in the first half of the 19th century, photography has offered an unprecedented way to analyze works of art for further study. Through crop, focus, angle of view, degree of close-up, and lighting, as well as through ex post facto techniques of darkroom manipulation, collage, montage, and assemblage, photographers not only interpret the works they record but create stunning reinventions. The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today presents a critical examination of the intersections between photography and sculpture, exploring how the one medium has become implicated in the understanding of the other. Through a selection of nearly 300 outstanding pictures by more than 100 artists from the dawn of modernism to the present, the exhibition looks at the ways in which photography at once informs and challenges our understanding of sculpture. Addressing how and why sculpture became a photographic subject, the exhibition examines pictures
TY - JOUR. T1 - Analysis of the body mass index and leg profiles of Asian women after total leg sculpture. AU - Tsai, Feng Chou. AU - Chen, Chien Hao. AU - Lin, Chan Yi. AU - Ho, Li Yung. PY - 2009/8. Y1 - 2009/8. N2 - BACKGROUND: In addition to the conventional methods used to improve leg contours, total leg sculpture, including liposuction, selective neurectomy, and transilluminated powered phlebectomy, provides a one-time solution of leg contour problems, which is a major aesthetic concern among Asian women. The authors present the postoperative results of total leg sculpture and determine any significance and correlation between the leg variables and body mass index by statistical analysis. METHODS: Thirty female patients who underwent total leg sculpture between 2005 and 2008 were included in the study, and prospective analysis of the patients data was performed during a follow-up period of 1 year. Local measurement variables and body mass index were recorded, and the correlation between ...

Ice Age Lion Man is world s earliest figurative sculpture Work carved from mammoth ivory has been redated and 1,000 new fragments discovered but it won t make it to British Museum show The star exhibit initially promised for the British Museum s Ice Age Art show will not be coming but for a good reason. New pieces of Ulm s Lion Man sculpture have been discovered and it has been found to be much older than originally thought, at around 40,000 years. This makes it the world s earliest figurative sculpture. At the London exhibition, which opens on 7 February, a replica from the Ulm Museum will instead go on display. The story of the discovery of the Lion Man goes back to August 1939, when fragments of mammoth ivory were excavated at the back of the Stadel Cave in the Swabian Alps, south-west Germany. This was a few days before the outbreak of the Second World War. When it was eventually reassembled in 1970, it was regarded as a standing bear or big cat, but with human characteristics. The ivory ...
The collecting of sculpture, including that of earlier periods, goes back some 2,000 years in Greece, China and Mesoamerica, and many collections were available on semi-public display long before the modern museum was invented. From the 20th century the relatively restricted range of subjects found in large sculpture expanded greatly, with abstract subjects and the use or representation of any type of subject now common. Today much sculpture is made for intermittent display in galleries and museums, and the ability to transport and store the increasingly large works is a factor in their construction. Small decorative figurines, most often in ceramics, are as popular today (though strangely neglected by modern and Contemporary art) as they were in the Rococo, or in ancient Greece when Tanagra figurines were a major industry, or in East Asian and Pre-Columbian art. Small sculpted fittings for furniture and other objects go well back into antiquity, as in the Nimrud ivories, Begram ivories and ...
The intermediate six-week course provides an introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of sculptural practice through individual student research, technical demonstrations, discussion of readings, technical exercises, and hands-on project development, within the context of a collaborative studio environment. As well, students develop a critical and constructive approach to critiques, time management skills, a professional attitude toward creating and presenting sculpture, and creative approaches to problem solving. The first and second year course is taught in a large studio with shared workstations and storage cupboards.. In third year, the twelve-week sculpture course provide students with an opportunity to explore their individual interests through an in-depth focus on development of conceptual ideas and technical skill. Students will create artworks related to three-dimensional space and the exploration of contemporary artistic practices, as well as advanced sculpture processes ...

My main focus is the human figure. Im devoted to creating sculpture that is spontaneous and contemporary in its sensibility, yet reflects a love for the past, in particular classical Greek art and the great masters of sculpture throughout history. Clay and bronze are how I interpret human form, which allow me to speak visually.". Anthony Antonios was born in New York City and attended the High School of Art and Design. He studied at Pratt Institute, the City College of New York, the Art Students League, and the National Academy of Design. His teachers included Robert Beverly Hale and Evangelos Frudakis. Today his work ranges from three-dimensional to relief sculpture to figurative drawings.. Mr. Antonios recently completed a commission for Fordham Prep on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx-two 3-feet-wide by 7-feet-high reliefs cast in bronze. Each sculpture is handmade and painted with no more tools than fingers and a paint brush. By virtue of this primal process, each creation is completely unique and produced in a fluid and intuitive manner. The process begins with a handmade metal armature over which light weight clay is sculpted. The painting is executed with acrylic, mineral and oil pigments and the embedded eyes are glass. When complete the whole piece is glazed to intensify colour and strength. With inspiration derived from animal physiology and a love of the fantastic, grotesque and absurd, each sculpture is unique and personable. The detailed craftsmanship is rich and thoughtful and never cast molded or replicated. Despite appearances these sculptures ship extremely well, I ship internationally on a weekly basis. ...

April Flowers for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online. At the Tayinat Archaeological Project (TAP) excavation site in Turkey, archaeologists have unearthed two new and exciting sculptures. One is a large, semi-circular column base, ornately decorated on one side and the other is a beautiful and colossal human sculpture. These cultural treasures are both from a monumental gate complex that provided access to the upper citadel of Kunulua, capital of the Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina that existed from approximately 1000 - 738 BC.. "These newly discovered Tayinat sculptures are the product of a vibrant local Neo-Hittite sculptural tradition," said Professor Tim Harrison, the Tayinat Project director and professor of Near Eastern Archaeology in the University of Torontos Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. "They provide a vivid glimpse into the innovative character and sophistication of the Iron Age cultures that emerged in the eastern Mediterranean following the collapse of the ...
Dear Passenger, In keeping with classical 20th Century practice, this elevator has been retasked into a post modern sculpture for the Festival of Nations. We apologize for any conceptual or practical inconvenience this may cause. How to enjoy this sculpture: 1. From the outside of the sculpture press a button. As you are reading this you have already probably done this or someone has done this for you. 2. The elevator is a unique interactive sculpture in that it promises, like the highway and the gas chamber, the possibility of being somewhere else. 3. When the doors open, someone may magically appear already inside of the sculpture: this may even be someone you love, despise, or more likely, have no idea who they are, other than that they live in the same building. Act as appropriate. Do not blame the sculpture, which has, like life, simply presented these people to you. Indeed, when in doubt, this sculpture suggests you simply act as if they are somehow not there. 4. Press a button. Any ...
On Thursday, May 1, Parks & Recreation commemorated the completion of the Ralph Ellison Memorial with a dramatic dedication ceremony. Attended by numerous public officials, including Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris and former Council Member Stanley E. Michels, the event centered around the unveiling of the memorials sculptural feature, an enormous bronze structure designed by noted artist Elizabeth Catlett. The statue faces Ellisons former home-730 Riverside Drive-where his wife, Fannie Ellison, still resides and is located in an area where Ellison used to sit and walk. The monument stands 15 high and 10 wide with the body of the "invisible man" carved into its mass. It is the first new, permanent sculpture to be placed in a City park in over two years, and the second to celebrate the life of an African-American artist. Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe called the sculpture, "one of the most important artistic monuments to be added to New York Citys landscape in the past 100 ...

The desert is full of jackrabbits but none as big as this one.. A giant sand sculpture in the shape of a jackrabbit was made on site for the Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival on Saturday at the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitors Center in Palm Desert.. Professional sand sculptors Kirk Rademaker and Rusty Croft used 26 tons of sand for the piece. Croft said earlier in the week that it would be 6feet tall at its highest point and about 15 feet wide.. They started building the sculpture from a mound of sand on Wednesday and intended to keep working on it up until the festival, where it would be revealed. Depending on Mother Nature, it could remain in place for months.. Volunteers eventually will take it down.. The visitors center is located at 51-500 Highway 74, Palm Desert.. - Staff report. ...

Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho creates sculptures and 2D works that probe the tension between beauty and violence. Nugrohos life-size resin sculptures of gun-toting human figures in flower suits are unnerving at a first glance. Rebels or enemies in unlikely disguises, these characters elicit a mixed reaction of fear and surprise, even laughter. Combining text and images, Nugrohos elaborate tapestries put a surreal, folkloric spin on propaganda art. Take a look at some photos of Eko Nugrohos work by Desi Suryanto and Oki Permatasari below.. ...
Across her work in sculpture, photography, installation, and performance, Julie Rrap interrogates common symbols of femininity. Her somewhat disquieting work points to the idea of gender as a performance - one that is sometimes painful and uncomfortable to execute. Well-heeled feet are at the focus of many of Rraps works, such as her sculpture Stepping Out, which features a pair of severed womens feet that have grown fleshy heels like a sort of impractical evolutionary mechanism. The piece hints at the pressure women face to modify their bodies to fit impossible beauty standards.. In a photo piece called Walking on Water, Rrap dons high heels made out of ice. While the frozen shoes evoke supreme discomfort, her performance Loaded flips their meaning. For this work, she wore heels made out of frozen pigment and painted with her feet as the shoes melted, turning her footwear from cumbersome fetish object to functional artistic tool. Rrap began her career as a performance artist in the 1970s and ...
In September 1836 sculptor William Calder Marshall (1813-94) left Edinburgh for Rome to join the international community of artists studying and working in the city. He departed with a mind to meet the famous sculptors John Gibson (1790-1866) and Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) who were based there. He was disappointed to find marble was far more expensive than he had expected.. Marshall produced a number of sculptures during his eighteen-month stay, including Psyche (1836-7), Italia (1837) and Hero And Leander (1837). He also enjoyed all the pursuits of the tourist: drinking coffee, viewing The Colosseum by moonlight and visiting the theatre. The threat of cholera, however, was constantly at his heels.. Marshalls papers, housed in the Henry Moore Institute Archive of Sculptors Papers, provide a glimpse into his trip and demonstrate the pleasures and considerable risks of working abroad for the British sculptor. Precautions against cholera considerably delayed Marshalls journey to Rome - ...

About the memorial: Memorial sculpture group to the memory of prisoners of war and victims of concentration camps 1914-1945, c.1967-69 by Fred Kormis, sited at Gladstone Park, Dollis Hill. This group comprises five fibreglass resin sculptures with bronze powder. Four male seated figures occupy a series of stepped platforms, with a fifth standing at the margin of the group. The platforms are clad in dark brindled brick paviours and surrounded by a cobbled surface of pebbles set into cement with a paviour border. The group is set against a sloping wall of shuttered reinforced concrete, painted white. Although the seated figures are arranged in contrasting postures they depict male figures of similar appearance, with swaddling-like wound strips of clothing, as if the same individual is shown at different states or conditions. Kormis described the sequence of figures as a five-chapter novel, each chapter describing a successive state of mind of internment: stupor after going into captivity; ...

One of the more curious aspects of controversial - or, perhaps, just bare-breasted - art, is this: People want to view it.. Which, amid a flurry of publicity, likely accounts for an uptick in attendance this week at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens on West 179th Street in the southern reaches of Johnson County.. Since November, the 300-acre nature garden has displayed along one of it wooded walking paths 11 life-size bronze sculptures that were created and donated to the arboretum by Chinese sculptors.. One of them, titled "Accept or Reject" by artist Yu Chang, presents the disjointed body of a young, bare-breasted woman, one thin arm extended to snap a photo of herself. The sculpture so shocked a Stilwell mother, Joanne Hughes, who came upon it with her children in tow, that since May 9 she has been leading a campaign to have it hauled off to a more "appropriate venue" where children cant be inadvertently exposed.. Calls to Overland Parks mayor, city manager, council members, ...

If youve been penning a list detailing your reasons to visit Finland, heres another brick for that rationalization wall: cow sculptures. Miina Äkkijyrkkä is a Finnish sculptor who previously spent time studying dairy farming. Now she constructs gigantic sculptures depicting cows, but she builds these artsy towers with a unique material-cars. Based in Helsinki, Miina travels all over the country to source her old cars from scattered dealers. On her website, she includes cow photography. It appears as though this artist does, indeed, create straight from the heart, as she should. At first read, this might all seem a little ridiculous to you. But even if it is ridiculous in your books, her art is simply magnificent-innovative and, of course, huge. When I finally make it to Finland, which Im hoping will be sooner than later, Im going to seek out these multicolored, metal cow structures.. Thanks: Inhabitat.com ...

The Walking Bods are a set of seven steel sculptures crafted by Barrett DeBusk. They stand 9 feet tall, and are each a different, solid color. They are on permanent display on the Washburn University Campus in Topeka, Kansas (between Stauffer Commons and the Mulvane Art Museum). They were first put on display through the summer of 2004. DeBusk was inspired for these sculptures while walking down Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. He said "I was struck by the mass of people, all moving in different directions, so alike but so different. My Bods represent different people in their daily march of life." A twin set of "Bods" named Walking Bobs can be found on permanent display at the University of West Alabama. Star Liana York - Spring | Fabric of Life Suite. The suite consists of four sculptures that reflect the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Each represents a stage in the creation of a wool weaving. . . . from the raising of the sheep to the blankets use. Interwoven is the life of a Navajo woman, going from child, mother, grandmother and finally elder, I will call her Nizhoni. Spring In this first sculpture Nizhoni learns to care for and nurture the sheep and their lambs. From this responsibility comes an understanding of the rhythms of nature. Even today Navajo children raised in the cities are often returned to the reservation to live with and learn from the grandparents for a period of time. Having the experience of their traditional old ways that are the backbone of their culture can give them a strong foundation for life. Tending sheep is a valuable chore to the family that is part of this education. This is the beginning of the young girls life, as it is the necessary beginning

The first known sculpture in the Indian subcontinent is from the Indus Valley civilization (3300-1700 BC), found in sites at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa in modern-day Pakistan. These include the famous small bronze male dancer. However such figures in bronze and stone are rare and greatly outnumbered by pottery figurines and stone seals, often of animals or deities very finely depicted. After the collapse of the Indus Valley civilization there is little record of sculpture until the Buddhist era, apart from a hoard of copper figures of (somewhat controversially) c. 1500 BCE from Daimabad.[39] Thus the great tradition of Indian monumental sculpture in stone appears to begin relatively late, with the reign of Ashoka from 270 to 232 BCE, and the Pillars of Ashoka he erected around India, carrying his edicts and topped by famous sculptures of animals, mostly lions, of which six survive.[40] Large amounts of figurative sculpture, mostly in relief, survive from Early Buddhist pilgrimage stupas, above all ...
For a long time, Roman ideal sculptures have primarily been studied within the tradition of Kopienkritik. Owing to some of the theoretical assumptions tied to this practice, several important aspects of Roman visual culture have been neglected as the overall aim of such research has been to gain new knowledge regarding assumed Classical and Hellenistic models. This thesis is a collection of three studies on Roman ideal sculpture. The articles share three general aims: 1. To show that the practice of Kopienkritik has, so far, not produced convincing interpretations of the sculpture types and motifs discussed. 2. To show that aspects of the methodology tied to the practice of Kopienkritik (thorough examination and comparison of physical forms in sculptures) can, and should, be used to gain insights other than those concerning hypothetical Classical and Hellenistic model images. 3. To present new interpretations of the sculpture types and motifs studied, interpretations which emphasize their role ...
This commission is mainly comprised of two groups of sculptures. One is the series "Mushrooms Illuminated"; eight human-high fiberglass sculptures, which have been given their form based on Aspergillus fumigatus - a fungi that produces the antibiotic called fumigatin. "Mushrooms Illuminated" are lit from the inside with LED-lighting. The second group of sculptures "Nymphaea Luminis [gigantea]" is comprised of nine seatable black concrete sculptures in the shape of stylized giant water lily leafs along with three glowing lily buds on tall stalks. When dusk falls, the "buds" light up like a greeting from Victoria Regia - the giant water lily of the Amazon, which opens it´s flowers at night. The entire installation consists of 20 sculptures in Henriksdalsallén in Stockholm, Sweden. The cobblestone pattern of the street, steel details, planting beds, flowers and other plants was shaped in dialog between artist Nikolina Ställborn and architects Anders Jönsson and Birgitta Holmberg ...
The screenplay I-5 is about the trucking business, and about nuclear finance. When I was in the trucking business, we hauled a lot of big outdoor sculptures (which inspired Sculpture - A Short Story some years later.) One big outdoor sculpture gets hauled to LA in the screenplay, I-5. In the real world, I worked on a big sculpture thats for sale right now (October 1997). Take a look at. An Insanely Great Sculpture by Alan Rice and Richard Katz entitled Soap.. Two more pictures of Richard Katz hauling stuff around on the back of a truck. The Indo Arch on a truck; and heres the Indo Arch as it stands today and possibly forever at 16th and K Streets in Sacramento CA. Heres a scan of a color print of Hauling Tomatoes circa 1976. That picture is a little hard to interpret. Dont worry about it.. Heres something else Alan Rice and I built, something completely different. Its a forklift trailer , which Alan and I built from the elevator cab from that same soap factory. Alan never ever signed his ...

The ancient Greeks and other early civilizations somehow managed to find time to memorialize their gods, triumphs and tragedies in statuary that would for the most part endure for all time. In Texas, on the other hand, it took about half a century -- longer if you start counting from Texas days as a Spanish province -- for folks to start putting up sculpture. But as an interesting new book by Carol Morris Little demonstrates, Texas has made up for its slow start since then. More than 1,200 pieces of outdoor sculpture are included in Littles "A Comprehensive Guide to Outdoor Sculpture in Texas." Published by the University of Texas Press, the 499-page book sells for $14.95 in paperback, $34.95 in hardcover. Little begins her study with an overview on sculpture in Texas, which had its beginning with the first monument to the Battle of the Alamo, a work commissioned by the Texas Legislature and later destroyed in the fire that gutted the Capitol in 1881. Monument building in Texas was slow until ...

Like acrylics and alkyds, polyurethanes (PUs) represent an important class of industrial paints adopted by 20th and 21st artists; primarily by those creating outdoor painted sculptures (OPS). Because PU coatings offer a compromise between aesthetic and performance expectations, unachievable with other types of paints, they are commonly recognized as the most appropriate option for painted artworks intended for an outdoor setting. However, the PU class includes various systems and subgroups possessing very different properties. Through the FTIR-ATR study of 137 PU coating references from the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) reference collection, this paper outlines the differences and the similarities existing, in terms of the composition, of two package solvent-borne, two package water-borne, one package water-borne and fluoropolymer polyurethanes. The comparison of the obtained FTIR-ATR results allowed determining markers helpful to discriminate specific PU subgroups by means of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy
Buy: SNAIL RACER (2018) Original Art, Sculpture 17.7x13.8x13.4 in by Artūras Tamašauskas (Lithuania) Buy the original: $1,300.08 Prints available from $19.00 https://www.artmajeur.com/en/arturas-tamasauskas/artworks/11737577/snail-racer I am a regular visitor of scrap yards where I can find different items for my work. This time I was attracted by a turbine - I fought it could serve as a snail house, and the body could be perfectly made of an engine cover from an old soviet motorcycle. The parts suggested an idea this must be no ordinary snail, but rather a snail-racer. I even had to install a speedometer and a ringleted metal trumpet issuing an audio signal. I made the head of the snail from two water-pipe body sets. In general, Ive made a very slowly hurrying racer. Main parts: The snail house - a car turbine, a teapot, parts of a lamp The snail body - a motorcycle engine cover The head - a water-pipe The wheel protection - from a childrens scooter #Figurative #Aluminum #Metal #Animals

John Rogers: American Stories, On View November 2, 2012 - February 17, 2013. NEW YORK, NY, October 29, 2012- By far the most popular American sculptor of his eventful era, John Rogers (1829-1904) was an astute and tireless maker and marketer of artworks for a broad audience. From the beginning of the Civil War to the end of the Gilded Age, he sold more than 80,000 narrative figural groups in plaster, reaching the American public en masse and addressing the issues that most touched their lives. His arresting and memorable subjects included scenes from the front lines and the home front of the Civil War, insightful commentaries on domestic life, and dramatic episodes from the stage and literature. Often selling for $15 apiece, Rogerss works became commonplace in the homes of middle- and upper-class Americans in the later nineteenth ...

FREDERICK, Md.-The work of two ceramic artists will be displayed in the Hodson Gallery in the Tatem Arts Center at Hood College from June 29 to July 15.. A reception for both exhibits will be June 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Controlled Disasters showcases the work of Jon Verock, a Washington, D.C.-based ceramic artist. His sculptures are metaphors for the historical destruction of four populations: Pompeii and Herculaneum following Mt. Vesuviuss eruption in the first century and Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. The busts are depicted without eyes or ears, symbolizing the peoples inability to see the threats or heed the warnings; the mouths are bolted shut to indicate, like those who fell victim to the disasters, they cannot tell their story.. Verock has taught art at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md., since 2007. He earned a bachelors degree from Muskingum University in Ohio. His work is in private collections in ...
