The diagnostic characters are reassessed and defined for the genera Lychas C. L. Koch, 1845, Mesobuthus Vachon, 1950, and Olivierus Farzanpay, 1987 (the latter is restored from synonymy with Mesobuthus). Four new genera are described: Aegaeobuthus gen. n. (type species Buthus gibbosus Brullé, 1832), Afrolychas gen. n. (type species Isometrus burdoi Simon, 1882), Janalychas gen. n. (type species Lychas srilankensis Lourenço, 1997), and Spelaeolychas gen. n. (type species Isometrus hosei Pocock, 1891). Type species are designated for subgenera Lychas (Distotrichus) Tikader & Bastawade, 1983 (type species Isometrus nigristernis Pocock, 1899), Lychas (Alterotrichus) Tikader & Bastawade, 1983 (type species Scorpio mucronatus Fabricius, 1793), and Lychas (Endotrichus) Tikader & Bastawade, 1983 (type species Isometrus scaber Pocock, 1893). All these three subgenera are now in synonymy with Lychas C. L. Koch, 1845. Lychas kaimana Lourenço, 2011 is synonymized with Lychas shelfordi (Borelli, 1904). ...

BmP02, a short-chain peptide with 28 residues from the venom of Chinese scorpion Buthus martensi Karsch, has been reported to inhibit the transient outward potassium currents (Ito) in rat ventricular muscle cells. However, it remains unclear whether BmP02 modulates the Kv4.2 channel, one of the main contributors to Ito. The present study investigated the effects of BmP02 on Kv4.2 kinetics and its underlying molecular mechanism. The electrophysiological recordings showed that the inactivation of Kv4.2 expressed in HEK293T cells was significantly delayed by BmP02 in a dose-response manner with EC50 of ~850 nM while the peak current, activation and voltage-dependent inactivation of Kv4.2 were not affected. Meanwhile, the recovery from inactivation of Kv4.2 was accelerated and the deactivation was slowed after the application of BmP02. The site-directed mutagenesis combined with computational modelling identified that K347 and K353, located in the turret motif of the Kv4.2, and E4/E5, D20/D21 in BmP02 are
Toxins that block voltage-dependent K(+) channels and those that modify Na(+) channel gating exhibit positive inotropic effect on skeletal muscle. We compared the effect of the venom of Tityus cambridgei (Tc) and Tityus serrulatus (Ts) scorpions on mouse diaphragm force, in vitro. In indirect and direct (using D-tubocurarine 7.3 mu M) stimulation, Tc, 10 mu g/mL increased the contractile force, an effect prevented by tetrodotoxin (TTX) while Ts, 0.5 mu g/mL, potentiated only indirectly stimulated diaphragm, thus indicating its activity is mainly mediated through acetylcholine release from nerve terminal. This effect is prevented by TTX and attenuated by the K(+) channel opener cromakalim. In conclusion, our data show that while the positive inotropic effect of both venoms appears associated to the activity of Na(+) and K(+) channels, only Tc venom acts also directly on skeletal muscle. This finding call for further studies on Tc venom to identify the toxin responsible for its direct inotropic ...

I first learned about scorpions growing up on the Arizona desert. It was not unusual for one to walk across our living room floor! The scorpion is yet another one of Gods amazing creatures. Though commonly thought of as desert animals, they actually live all over the world. Similar to spiders, mites, and ticks, scorpions have eight legs and belong to the Arachnidaclass with some 1,400 species worldwide. Scorpions have a long body and a segmented tail that is tipped with a venomous stinger. They have a pair of plier-like pincers (pedipalps) for grasping. At the end of the abdomen is the telson-a bulb that contains venom glands and has a sharp, curved stinger to inject the venom (see Revelation 9:5).. Evolutionists say that fossilized scorpions are found in the Paleozoic strata and date back 430 million years ago. But, of course, that is silly since God made the first ones only about 6,000 years ago. Even evolutionists admit that the fossilized scorpions "appear very similar to present day ...
Scorpions possess two types of visual organs, the median and lateral eyes. Both eyes consist of simple ocelli with biconvex lenses that differ in structure and function. There is little variation in the number of median ocelli across the order. Except for a few troglomorphic species in which the median ocelli are absent, all scorpions possess a single pair. In contrast, the number of pairs of lateral ocelli varies from zero to five across Scorpiones and may vary within species. No attempt has been made to homologize lateral ocelli across the order, and their utility in scorpion systematics has been questioned, due to the variation in number. A recent study examined the number of lateral ocelli among various Asian Buthidae C.L. Koch, 1837 and proposed a five-eye model for the family. This model has not been examined more broadly within Buthidae, however, nor compared with the patterns of variation observed among other scorpion families. An eyespot, referred to as an accessory lateral eye, ...

Summary The venom of the scorpion Centruroides sculpturatus Ewing has been responsible for more than twice as many deaths in Arizona than the venoms of all other venomous animals combined. Clinical experience indicated that patients stung by this scorpion and given meperidine hydrochloride (Demerol®) consistently experienced a more serious reaction from this venom. The hypothesis that synergism existed between this scorpion venom and Demerol, morphine sulphate, dihydromorphinone hydrochloride (Dilaudid®), codeine phosphate, N-allyl-normorphine hydrochloride (Nalline®) and 1-3-hydroxy-N-allyl-morphinan tartrate (Lorfan®), was tested. Albino rats of the Holtzman/Sprague Dawley strain were used as assay animals and the Thompson-Weil technique was used for obtaining the LD50. The assays confirmed the clinical observations that these substances act synergistically with the venom. Morphine sulphate, in doses of 50 mg/kg, and Dilaudid, at 20 mg/kg, increased the toxicity 7.14 times, while Demerol, in a

Selection should favor individuals that acquire, process, and act on relevant environmental signals to avoid predation. Studies have found that scorpions control their use of venom: both when it is released and the total volume expelled. However, this research has not included how a scorpions awareness of environmental features influences these decisions. The current study tested 18 Vaejovis carolinianus scorpions (nine females and nine males) by placing them in circular arenas supplied with varying numbers (zero, two, or four) of square refuges and by tracking their movements overnight. The following morning, defensive behaviors were elicited by prodding scorpions on the chelae, prosoma, and metasoma once per second over 90 s. We recorded stings, venom use, chelae pinches, and flee duration. We found strong evidence that, across all behaviors measured, V. carolinianus perceived prods to the prosoma as more threatening than prods to the other locations. We found that stinging was a common ...

Beta toxins bind voltage-independently at site-4 of sodium channels (Nav) and shift the voltage of activation toward more negative potentials thereby affecting sodium channel activation and promoting spontaneous and repetitive firing.
What happens when you mix more than 12,000 fans, extreme heat and bands like Scorpions, Kix, Cinderella, Warrant, Vince Neil and more? The answer, of course, is that you get a massive party. The second-annual M3 festival was held June 19 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. A suburb of Baltimore, the location meant fans could easily access the fest from all over … and they did. A stage announcement noted that fans had come from "just about every continent, including Australia.". Scorpions are on their farewell tour, and M3 was their first big stop. Lead singer Klaus Meine was very ill and the band went on around 30 minutes late. By the end of the day, fans were exhausted and restless and two false starts by the Scorpions technical team didnt assuage the agitated mood. When Scorpions finally burst on stage, they played a diverse mix of songs ranging from the beginning of their career to their new album Sting in the Tail. Even while sick, Meine belted through 40 years of hard rock ...
The best-studied components of scorpion venom are the polypeptides that recognise ion channels and receptors in excitable membranes. They are harmful to a variety of organisms including man (for reviews, see Possani et al., 1999a, 2000). The molecules responsible for the toxicity of the scorpion venom are polypeptides of 4-8 kDa that have been classified according to their receptor targets. Four different families of toxin have been found to interact specifically with ion channels: Na+ channels (for a review, see Catterall, 1996), K+ channels (for a review, see Garcia et al., 1997), Cl- channels (Debin et al., 1993) and Ca2+ channels (for a review, see Valdivia and Possani, 1998). Scorpion toxins that affect Na+ channels are basic proteins with 60-76 amino acid residues, are stabilized by four disulphide bridges and are capable of specifically recognizing the Na+ channels of mammals, insects and crustaceans (Possani et al., 1999a). Their molecular mechanism of action has been described as being ...
Tamulotoxin (or Tamulus toxin, Tamulustoxin, in short form: TmTx) is a venomous neurotoxin from the Indian Red Scorpion (Hottentotta tamulus, Mesobuthus tamulus or Buthus tamulus). The toxin has been classified as a short-chain scorpion toxin. It consists of 36 amino acids and is referred to as TmTx1. A peptide consisting of 35 amino acids has also been identified, referred to as TmTx2. It possesses three intra-molecular disulphide bonds (S-S), leading to a highly stabilized conformation. It also has six cysteine residues which is a characteristic shared by many short-chain scorpion toxins. TmTx belongs to the short scorpion toxin superfamily and the potassium channel inhibitor family. Adhering to the nomenclature of Tytgat et al., potassium toxins can be divided into four subgroups: alpha, beta, gamma and kappa. It belongs to the group of alpha potassium toxins (α-KTx: alpha toxin affecting potassium channels). This group contains short-chain peptides of 23-42 acids with three or four ...

Three trials on new world scorpion stings met the inclusion criteria for inclusion in a meta-analysis [18-20]. Their methodological characteristics are discussed in Table 2, and risk of bias is shown in Fig. 2. A study included by Abroug et al. in their meta-analysis was excluded by us as both groups were retrospectively evaluated leading to a considerable degree of bias [21]. There was one new trial (which met the inclusion criteria) that had been published since the first meta-analysis [19].. The first of the included studies, conducted by Boyer et al. in Arizona, USA, showed a benefit of antivenom administration for Centruroides sp. stings [20]. This study was on children and had a very small sample size (n = 8 for antivenom group and n = 7 for placebo group). The antivenom used was developed against a venom mix of Centruroides sp. found in Mexico and was purported to be effective against C. sculpturatus prevalent in Arizona based on in vitro binding affinity studies. The outcomes assessed ...

Significant progress has been made in immunological studies of scorpion toxins and several formats of antibodies directed against scorpion toxins have been reported. Some of these are commonly used in a specific treatment against envenoming; others are primarily used for immuno-biochemical characterizations. The preparation protocol of the antibody or its fragments can be substantially different from one laboratory to another, which complicates a direct comparison of the potency of the antivenom. The use of immune sera, the total immunoglobulin fraction or Fab and Fab2 fragments as the therapeutic agent is widespread. A number of monoclonal antibodies have also been reported and used for engineering of Fv, ScFv or Fab fragments. Recently, a novel antibody format - known as nanobodies - derived from HCAbs of camelids and selected after phage display shows great potential to provide a more efficient therapy against scorpion envenoming. Subsequent bispecific derivatives have been designed and ...
Scorpions are carnivores and feed mostly on insects, but will eat small mice and lizards, too. They have three main ways of catching their food. One, they hide and wait for their prey to come to them. Two, they stalk their prey. Three, they dig a hole in the sand and wait for their prey to fall through. Once their prey is captured, they crush it up with their pincers and inject an enzyme that dissolves its insides. Scorpions do this, which may take an hour, because they can only suck liquid due to their small mouths. Scorpions dont eat very often. They can slow their metabolism down to one third its normal rate, enabling them to survive on 1 insect per year! This is not typical, however, and usually eat every couple of weeks ...

Adult size: males 30-70mm, females 35-55mm. Color: entire body yellow with variable dusky pattern: usually there are two longitudinal dark bands over the mesosoma and the pedipalps, prosoma, chelicerae, legs and venter of the metasoma are spotted; the dusky pattern may be absent in some specimens or populations. Females mate a single first time, and then gave birth 3-4 times a year during 1-2 years. Lifespan in captivity: 2-3 years from birth to natural death. This species is very distinctive: its light, smooth & polished tegument makes it look as if it was a crystal scorpion.. This species is probably not kept in captivity by hobbyists. In captivity it will do fine under the same conditions as C. gracilis.. The information on this page is supplied by Dr. Rolando Teruel. ...
A disappointing result - but not nearly as bad as last years season opener, when the Scorpions were ravaged 4-0 by Puerto Rico at Heroes Stadium. The Scorpions generated 13 shots and flubbed multiple quality chances in front of Tampa Bays net. An array of dignitaries, including mayor Julian Castro and Miss USA 2012 Nana Meriwether, descended upon the soccer-specific stadium to find an ambience suitable for Fiesta. A powerful sound system pumped music before kickoff while fans milled about drinking beer and absorbing the moment. NASL commissioner Bill Peterson, a guest of Scorpions owner Gordon Hartman, couldnt help but imagine similar openings in the second division of U.S. soccer.

SAN ANTONIO - Up a man for the final hour, pouring wave after wave of pressure on FC Edmontons besieged defense, it seemed only a matter of time before the Scorpions netted the decisive goal Saturday at Toyota Field. [...] with their finishing touch once again lacking, the Scorpions were forced to settle for a frustrating 0-0 draw that dropped them five points off the top with just three matches left in the NASLs spring season. Even without him, the Scorpions had little trouble generating chances, particularly after Edmonton defender Mallan Roberts was sent off with a straight red card in the 27th minute for kicking Stephen DeRoux in the head in pursuit of a loose ball.

1. There are extraocular photoreceptors in the metasoma of different species of the scorpion Heterometrus (H.fulvipes var. I, H. fulvipes var. II and H. gravimanus).. 2. The relative sensitivity of the different parts of the metasoma differs in the different species of Heterometrus studied.. 3. The telsonic nerves, although sensitive to light, are not solely responsible for the extraocular perception of light, and cutting of the telsonic nerves does not abolish the response in any of the species of Heterometrus used.. 4. With increase in the intensity of light stimulus the latency of response decreases and the impulse frequency increases in the responding units; and a greater number of units are excited.. 5. With prolonged exposure of the receptors to light some units become adapted, and the rate of adaptation is different in the telsonic response as compared to the ganglionic response in H. gravimanus.. 6. Spectral sensitivity is the same in the different species of Heterometrus tested, and the ...

You are a fool, Mr. David Ramsey. You promise me things I have and offer me trinkets, trinkets, while I am the one who has the antidote for the venom of the thousands of nearly-microscopic scorpions stinging you right now. You thought that was a rash, but in in fact you have been stung thousands or perhaps millions of times by Scorpiones pestis, a near-microscopic predator whose poison is 10,000 times more deadly than rattlesnake venom. Scorpiones pestis, found in a tropical/semi-tropical range from the northern part of the Indochine Peninsula to the southern parts of Indonesia, is a shy predator that subsists primarily on very small aphids and fleas. A retiring creature, interactions with humans are rare and are almost never fatal, as the species prefers to use its stinger sparingly, the stinger can only barely penetrate the topmost layer of epidermis, and the amount of poison the scorpion can inject is minute. That having been said, swarms of Scorpiones pestis can take down very small birds ...
Red scorpionThe red scorpion (mesobuthus tamulus) is common in rural India, especially in the coastal areas where about 10-12 cases are seen every month in primary health centers. Red scorpion venom contains a potent cardiotoxin which when given to guinea pigs and mice causes pulmonary edema and death. Despite the use of digoxin, diuretics, aminophylline and medical phlebotomy, Dr. P. M. Mundle
Weve been living in Guanajuato, Guanajuato for about 4 and a half months. I have never seen a tarantula but I have seen a few scorpians around the house. We recently had the house fumigated and havent seen one recently, though. Are you planning on living in the city of Guanajuato or somewhere else within the state of Guanajuato? I ask, because what I have heard from the locals is that the scorpians in the city of Guanajuato are not dangerous, but a species of scorpian that is found in Leon requires the person thats bitten to have to go to the hospital.. I did a web search on scorpians and came up with the following statistic:. "There are at least 1,500 scorpion species, and only 25 of them produce a venom that causes serious harm to adult humans.". I wouldnt let a few scorpians deter you from coming down to Guanajuato. Its an amazing place.. ...

Dr. Todd Zalut, Director of the Emergency Medicine Department at Shaare Zedek explains, "Scorpions can be divided into black and yellow scorpions and all bites can cause allergic reactions. While the bite from a black scorpion hurts a lot, the yellow scorpion has poisonous venom. People stung by a yellow scorpion may experience pain, swelling, tingling or numbness around the area of the bite, the person may have difficulty swallowing, blurred vision, roving eye movements, seizures, salivation, thick tongue, nausea, vomiting, respiratory distress, or agitation… Antivenom is one treatment option, however, we only use it in very severe cases since there is a potential for complications from the antivenom. Generally, we calm the patient, treat the pain and give muscle relaxants. Please be sure to seek immediate medical attention if you have been stung by either type of scorpion." ...
