Refractive Changes After Scleral Buckling Surgery | IOVS | ARVO Journals
Abstract: : Purpose:A prospective study was conducted to compare the refractive changes after three different types of scleral buckling surgery. Methods: 100 eyes of 100 patients were divided into three groups according to the type of buckling procedure performed: Group 1, encircling scleral buckling (42 patients); Group 2, encircling with vitrectomy (30 patients); Group 3, encircling with additional segmental buckling (28 patients). Refractive examinations were performed before and at 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery. Results: The amount of induced astigmatism was more significant in Group 3. Changes in spherical equivalent and axial length were more significant in Group 3. No statistical significance was found between Groups 1 and 2.Conclusion: All three types of scleral buckling surgery were found to produce refractive changes. A correlation exists between additional segments and extent of refractive change. ...

Scleral Buckling Surgery for Retinal Detachment - North Kansas City Hospital, Kansas City, MO
Scleral buckling surgery is a common way to treat retinal detachment. It is a method of closing breaks and flattening the retina.. A scleral buckle is a piece of silicone sponge, rubber, or semi-hard plastic that your eye doctor (ophthalmologist) places on the outside of the eye (the sclera, or the white of the eye). The material is sewn to the eye to keep it in place. The buckling element is usually left in place permanently.. The element pushes in, or buckles, the sclera toward the middle of the eye. This buckling effect on the sclera relieves the pull (traction) on the retina, allowing the retinal tear to settle against the wall of the eye. The buckle effect may cover only the area behind the detachment, or it may encircle the eyeball like a ring. By itself, the buckle does not prevent a retinal break from opening again. Usually extreme cold (cryopexy) or, less commonly, heat (diathermy) or light (laser photocoagulation) is used to scar the retina and hold it in place until a seal forms ...
Study Trial of Dexamethasone Use for Alleviation of Symptoms After Scleral Buckle Eye Surgery - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials...
Dexamethasone is a medication that has been shown to have clear anti-nausea, anti-inflammatory, and painkilling properties. Dexamethasone is currently used to manage postoperative symptoms of a variety of surgical procedures. However, its effect has not been validated for scleral buckling surgery, which is used to treat retinal detachment, a medical emergency that can lead to permanent blindness. In this study, the investigators will randomly administer dexamethasone to half of scleral buckling surgery patients, and a placebo to the other half. The investigators will then compare the postoperative symptoms of the two groups in order to determine whether dexamethasone should be used for scleral buckling surgeries ...
Ocular circulatory changes following scleral buckling procedures. | British Journal of Ophthalmology
The effect of segmental scleral buckling (SB) on ocular circulation was evaluated by measurements of the ocular pulse amplitude (PA) and the ophthalmic artery pressure (OAP). In this study the OAP was defined as the intraocular pressure (IOP) at which the PA disappeared during increasing IOP. Twenty four patients with unilateral rhegmatogenous retinal detachment who underwent SB of varying extent were studied; the unoperated fellow eyes served as controls. Both the OAP and the ophthalmic perfusion pressures (OAP minus IOP) decreased significantly (p , 0.01) as the area of SB treatment increased. Follow-up measurements showed that the OAP was relatively lower up to 3 months postoperatively than after 3 months, and then remained stable. Our results indicated that SB affects the ocular pulse measurements and may decrease ocular blood flow because of decreased ophthalmic perfusion pressure, probably due to increased choroidal vascular resistance, and that the greater the extent of the SB treatment, ...

Scleral buckle - Wikipedia
A scleral buckle is one of several ophthalmologic procedures that can be used to repair a retinal detachment. Retinal detachments are usually caused by retinal tears, and a scleral buckle can be used to close the retinal break. The use of scleral buckling will occasionally limit pupil dilation or constriction with no clinically significant pattern. Scleral buckles come in many shapes and sizes. An encircling band is a thin silicone band sewn around the circumference of the sclera of the eye. Buckles are often placed under a band to create a dimple on the eye wall. The scleral buckle is secured around the eyeball under the conjunctiva. This moves the wall of the eye closer to the detached retina. It also may move the retina closer to the vitreous. This alteration in the relationships of the tissues seems to allow the fluid which has formed under the retina to be pumped out, and the retina to re-attach. The physics or physiology of this process are not fully understood. Retinal detachment surgery ...
Buckle, no cryo: scleral buckle with no cryotherapy for retinal detachment secondary to commotio retinae | British Journal of...
Two cases of retinal detachment in commotio retinae are presented. Both had a successful outcome with scleral buckling alone, without subretinal fluid drainage or retinopexy.. A 22-year-old man was referred to our unit 2 days after blunt trauma to his right eye. On examination, his visual acuities were 6/9 and 6/6 in the right and left eyes, respectively. Abnormal findings included mild right traumatic uveitis, a mild right vitreous haemorrhage, and a large area of superotemporal commotio retinae in the detached retina, and no posterior vitreous detachment. This was associated with a large peripheral retinal tear, extending from 10:00 to 12:00 h. As signs of progression were noted while the macula remained attached, the patient underwent scleral buckling surgery with a type 277 scleral buckle. To prevent further inflammation and breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier, neither cryotherapy nor subretinal fluid ...

AU - Smiddy, William E.. PY - 1995/5/22. Y1 - 1995/5/22. N2 - Pilot studies for laser scleral buckling made it clear that quantification of scleral shrinkage was required for precision and reproducibility of the treatment. For the quantification either the Ho:YAG (2.10 μm) or the TmrYAG (2.01 μm) lasers were applied to the equatorial sclera of human cadaver eyes. Two slightly overlapping spots (2.8mmØ) were applied. Shrinkage rate was expressed as: {(Scleral length before treatment - Scleral length after treatment)/Scleral length before treatment} x 100 (%). Shrinkage rate was measured changing several parameters. Total fluence, energy/pulse, scleral thickness, tissue temperature, age, and intraocular pressure. Shrinkage rate was found to be mainly function of total fluence attaining a maximum of 26-30% in adult and ...
Retinal Tear and Detachment - Eyes Wide Bay
Retinal tears may be treated with retinal laser to seal the retina to the back wall of the eye. The laser creates small burns around the tear, and the resulting scar prevents fluid getting through the tear and so helps to prevent a retinal detachment. This treatment can be performed in rooms with minimal discomfort.. Retinal detachments will generally require surgery to reattach the retina. Without surgery the retina will lose function and blindness can result. The surgery may be either vitrectomy or scleral buckling surgery. Vitrectomy surgery is the removal of the vitreous jelly to remove traction on the retina and also to remove factors in the gel that contribute to retinal scarring. Retinal laser or cryosurgery is performed during the surgery, and a gas is also injected into the eye to apply pressure to the retina. In some cases silicon oil is used to flatten the retina. Vitrectomy surgery is often used together with scleral buckling surgery. This surgery involves the use of a flexible ...
Utility of Infrared Imaging For Visualizing Persistent Subretinal Fluid After Retinal Detachment Surgery | IOVS | ARVO Journals
Purpose: Persistent subretinal fluid (PSRF) located at the macula after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgery may be responsible for delayed visual recovery and may affect the final visual outcome. However, PSRF may be difficult to detect on clinical examination. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is useful to diagnose PSRF. In this study, the utility of infrared (IR) imaging for visualizing PSRF was explored and compared to other imaging modalities.. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on 4 eyes of 4 patients with PSRF following scleral buckling procedure (SBP) or pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for RRD repair. The IR images and spectral domain OCT images obtained were analyzed and qualitatively compared. Fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), autofluorescence (AF), and color fundus photography were also compared with IR images when available.. Results: Two patients had been treated with SBP and two patients with PPV. Initial imaging was ...

Glaucoma associated with the management of rhegmatogenous retinal deta | OPTH
Glaucoma associated with the management of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment George Mangouritsas, Spyridon Mourtzoukos, Dimitra M Portaliou, Vassilios I Georgopoulos, Anastasia Dimopoulou, Elias Feretis Eye Clinic, General Hospital "Hellenic Red Cross", Athens, Greece Abstract: Transient or permanent elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) is a common complication following vitreoretinal surgery. Usually secondary glaucoma, which develops after scleral buckling procedures, or pars plana vitrectomy for repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, is of multifactorial origin. It is essential, for appropriate management, to detect the cause of outflow obstruction. An exacerbation of preexisting open-angle glaucoma or a steroid-induced elevation of IOP should also be considered. Scleral buckling may be complicated by congestion and anterior rotation of the ciliary body resulting in secondary angle closure, which can usually resolve with medical therapy. The use of intravitreal gases may also

Incarceration of vitreous in the wound during cataract or vitreous surgery can lead to many postoperative complications. Following cataract surgery with vitreous incarceration, there is increased risk of infectious endophthalmitis, epithelial ingrowth, hypotony, shallow anterior chamber, peripheral anterior synechiae, and secondary glaucoma. Incarcerated vitreous in the wound and iridovitreal adhesions may cause chronic ocular discomfort with inflammation, cystoid macular edema, and optic nerve head edema (Irvine-Gass syndrome). These complications may be reduced by disconnecting any vitreous from anterior adhesions and incarcerations through vitrectomy.. Retinal detachment can be caused by contraction of vitreous incarcerated in cataract or vitrectomy incisions. Such detachments may be rhegmatogenous or tractional and may require treatment with vitrectomy and/or scleral buckling surgery (see Chapter 20).. The risk of complications from vitreous loss during cataract surgery can be sharply ...

Mechanics of microtubule buckling in living cells | iMechanica
As the most rigid cytoskeletal filaments, microtubules bear compressive forces in living cells, balancing the tensile forces within the cytoskeleton to maintain the cell shape. It is often observed that, in living cells, microtubules under compression severely buckle into short wavelengths. By contrast, when compressed, isolated microtubules in vitro buckle into single long-wavelength arcs. The critical buckling force of the microtubules in vitro is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the microtubules in living cells. To explain this discrepancy, we describe a mechanics model of microtubule buckling in living cells. The model investigates the effect of the surrounding filament network and the cytosol on the microtubule buckling. The results show that, while the buckling wavelength is set by the interplay between the microtubules and the elastic surrounding filament network, the buckling growth rate is set by the viscous cytosol. The model quantitatively correlates the microtubule bending ...

دانلود مقاله Buckling analysis of carbon nanotube bundles under bending loading via a structural mechanics model
The effects of boundary conditions on the buckling behavior of CNT bundles of three SWCNTs are investigated using a structural mechanics model. Due to the application of carbon nanotubes in different fields such as NEMS, where they are subjected to different loading and boundary conditions, an investigation of buckling behavior of nanotubes with different boundary conditions is necessary. To evaluate the buckling torques of carbon nanotube bundles, the effects of Van-der Waals forces are further modeled using a nonlinear spring element in the CAE space of ABAQUS. The structural mechanicssimulations reveal that CNT bundles comprising longer SWCNTs will exhibit lower critical buckling moment. In addition, the critical buckling moments when torque is applied in the Y direction are less than the X direction for all ...

A Medline search was made of all reports that were identified by the search terms retinal detachment, segmental buckling, minimal extraocular surgery, and nondrainage. Reports published in English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and in some East European journals were reviewed and analyzed. The majority of reports did not contain homogenous data suitable for the analysis. Many included both complicated and uncomplicated detachments, primary detachments and reoperations, or no preoperative characteristics. In many series, primary segmental buckling was combined with a cerclage. The buckling was performed with or without drainage of subretinal fluid. Primary segmental buckling was sometimes combined with an injection of air, an expanding gas, or silicone oil.. After excluding these reports, an analysis was made of a relatively homogenous series of mostly primary retinal detachments, some with preoperative PVR stage C1-C2. The primary procedure in all eyes was minimal segmental buckling ...

This paper presents a method and procedure of sensing and determining critical shear buckling load and corresponding deformations of a comparably large composite I-section using strain rosettes and displacement sensors. The tested specimen was a pultruded composite beam made of vinyl ester resin, E-glass and carbon fibers. Various coupon tests were performed before the shear buckling test to obtain fundamental material properties of the I-section. In order to sensitively detect shear buckling of the tested I-section, twenty strain rosettes and eight displacement sensors were applied and attached on the web and flange surfaces. An asymmetric four-point bending loading scheme was utilized for the test. The loading scheme resulted a high shear and almost zero moment condition at the center of the web panel. The web shear buckling load was determined after analyzing the obtained test data from strain rosettes and displacement sensors. Finite element analysis was also performed to verify the experimental
Buckling of nanotubes under compression considering surface effects
In this paper, the modified Euler-Bernoulli beam model is presented to examine the influence of surface elasticity and residual surface tension on the critical force of axial buckling of nanotubes in the presence of rotary inertia. An explicit solution is derived for the buckling loads of microscaled Euler beams considering surface effects. The size-dependent buckling behavior of the nanotube due to surface effects is well elucidated in the obtained solutions. The critical forces are evaluated for axial buckling of cantilever beams. The results are compared with those corresponding to the classical beam model. The influences of the surface effects on the critical forces are discussed in detail.

Polymerization force driven buckling of microtubule bundles determines the wavelength of patterns formed in tubulin solutions. ...
We present a model for the spontaneous formation of a striated pattern in polymerizing microtubule solutions. It describes the buckling of a single microtubule (MT) bundle within an elastic network formed by other similarly aligned and buckling bundles and unaligned MTs. Phase contrast and polarization microscopy studies of the temporal evolution of the pattern imply that the polymerization of MTs within the bundles creates the driving compressional force. Using the measured rate of buckling, the established MT force-velocity curve and the pattern wavelength, we obtain reasonable estimates for the MT bundle bending rigidity and the elastic constant of the network. The analysis implies that the bundles buckle as solid rods.

The origin of this phenomenon is unknown. Excessive extracellular potassium in the retina has been hypothesized, but not proven as the pathophysiological basis of the Mizuo-Nakamura phenomenon.(5) A case report of retinal detachment seen in a patient with Oguchi disease reported that the detached retina lost its golden reflex, but partially regained the reflex 7 months after segmental buckling surgery. The area of the golden sheen had enlarged during the following 14 months. This result suggested that a connection between the retinal pigment epithelium and sensory retina must be necessary for the abnormal fundus reflex to occur.(8) In another patient with Oguchi disease, diffuse, fine, white particles, which do not exist in normal subjects, were clearly demonstrated in the light-adapted retina with helium-neon laser. These particles were not seen by scanning laser ophthalmoscopy with the use of argon and infrared lasers, suggesting that they appear to be located in the outer retina, retina ...

Retinal Detachment
A retinal detachment is a medical emergency occurring when the sensory retina separates from the retinal pigment epithelium. It often arises after a retinal hole appears.. Retinal detachments are divided into 2 types, namely: rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and non rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment occurs due to retinal breaks. Non - rhegmatogenous retinal detachments are either tractional or exudative.. The following symptoms may be observed; reduction of vision, floaters and flashes of light. Retinal detachments may occur as a result of a posterior vitreous detachment.. Retinal detachments are treated by means of surgery, usually the kind of surgery involving working inside the back of the eye. A pars plana vitrectomy entails the surgical removal of the vitreous from the eye and replacing with silicone oil or gas. Patients may be advised not to travel in airplanes for up to 6 weeks after retinal surgery is performed.. ...
Spectral domain OCT changes after anatomically successful repair of macula-off retinal detachment | Archivio Istituzionale...
Purpose:To evaluate foveal microstructural changes in eyes with anatomically successful repair of macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) by Spectral domain OCT. Methods:Retrospective, consecutive, observational case series of twelve eyes of 12 consecutive patients with macula-off RRDs after anatomically successful surgical repair (pars plana vitrectomy or scleral buckling). Each patient underwent the following examinations on the same day: BCVA, ophtalmoscopic fundus examination and Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). We divided all patients in 4 groups considering SD-OCT abnormalities. The correlation between the postoperative BCVA and foveal microstructural findings was evaluated. Results:: We obtained SD-OCT images a mean of 9.5 months (range, 2-23) after surgery. All patients presented foveal anatomic abnormalities: absence of the SD-OCT hyper-reflective structure between RPE and IS/OS junction (attributable to the junction between RPE cells and outer segment ...

Retinal Detachment:Types,Causes,Symptoms & Treatment » How To Relief
Small holes and tears are treated with laser surgery or a freeze treatment known as cryopexy. Through laser surgery, tiny burns are made around the hole to weld the retina back into place. Cryopexy freezes the area around the hole and assists reattach the retina. These methods are normally performed in the doctors office.. Retinal detachments are treated with surgery(Scleral buckle surgery) that may need the patient to stay in the hospital. In some instances, a scleral buckle, a tiny synthetic band, is connected to the outside of the eyeball to gently thrust the wall of the eye against the detached retina. If necessary, a vitrectomy may also be performed.. With modern treatment, over 90 percent of those with a retinal detachment can be favorably managed, although sometimes a second treatment is needed.. ...

10 Fascinating Reattachment Surgeries - Listverse
10 Fascinating Reattachment Surgeries^10 Fascinating Reattachment Surgeries^ In the last several years thanks to the advancement of medical equipment and improved microsurgery techniques the success rate for limb reattachment surgeries has improved dramatically compared to when it was fist performed successfully almost 50years ago. This list includes some of the more interesting and dramatic reattachments of body parts due to accidents and assaults. (This is not to be confused with the recent success of transplanting body parts from donors.) According to what I have read if you wish to help someone in this situation the best course of action is to wrap the digit or limb in wet paper towels, then wrap it in plastic, and then pack it in ice. Remember: save the patient, save time and save the limb.^Blogball

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in Scotland: research design and methodology | BMC Ophthalmology | Full Text
Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a potentially blinding ophthalmic pathology caused by a separation of the neurosensory retina (NSR) from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium and the accumulation of fluid within this potential space. It is responsible for up to 2% of blind and partial sight registrations in Ireland, Scotland and south west England [1-3]. The mainstay of RRD treatment is surgical, accounting for an important proportion of ophthalmic hospital in-patient admissions at an annual cost of over £1.3 million in the U.K [4]. The principles defining an epidemiology study are the careful delineation of the study population from which cases are derived and the effort to ascertain every eligible case from the study population [5]. To date there have been no large-scale systematic epidemiology studies of RRD in Scotland. Previous population based estimates of the incidence of RRD have varied considerably, with overall annual incidence rates reported between 5-17.9 per 100,000 ...
Thermal Buckling of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Nonlocal Elasticity | Journal of Applied Mechanics | ASME DC
The small internal length scales of nanomaterials/nano-devices may call the direct application of classical continuum models into question. In this research, a nonlocal elastic shell model, which takes the small scale effects into account, is developed to study the thermal buckling behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The multi-walled carbon nanotubes are considered as concentric thin shells coupled with the van der Waals forces between adjacent nanotubes. Closed form solutions are formulated for two types of thermal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube: Radial thermal buckling (as in a shell under external pressure) and axial thermal buckling. The effects of small scale effects are demonstrated, and a significant influence of internal characteristic parameters such as the length of the ...
Examining the effects of wall numbers on buckling behavior and mechanical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes via...
Molecular dynamics simulations are performed on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) under axial compression to investigate the effects of the number of walls and their van der Waals (vdW) interaction on the buckling behaviors and mechanical properties (Youngs modulus and Poissons ratio). The Brenner second-generation reactive empirical bond order and Lennard-Jones 12-6 potential have been adopted to describe the short-range bonding and long-range vdW atomic interaction within the carbon nanotubes, respectively. In the presence of vdW interaction, the buckling strain and Youngs modulus of MWCNTs increase as the number of tubes is increased while keeping the outermost tube diameter constant, whereas Poissons ratio was observed to decrease. On the other hand, when the MWCNTs are formed by progressively adding outer tubes while keeping the innermost tube diameter constant, Youngs modulus and buckling strain were observed to decrease, whereas Poissons ratio increases. The buckling load ...
Lattice Degeneration Treatment in India | Sanjeevan
Lattice Degeneration is an atrophic disease of the peripheral retina which is marked by the presence of linear patches of retinal thinning. By the second decade of life, the prevalence of lattice degeneration is at the peak level. It is considered to be minimally progressive but retinal detachment may result as its rare complication.. The retina is the layer of specialized nerve tissue lining the back of the eye that allows you to see. Generally, only a small part of the center of the retina is used to view most of the things. The far peripheral retina, responsible for the extreme side vision can degenerate and become very week and thin in some cases. Lattice degeneration is the most common type of peripheral retinal degeneration. It is seen in about 1 out of every 10 people in the general population. It is common for the condition to be found in both eyes. Lattice degeneration also commonly leads to the development of retinal holes.. The pathogenesis of lattice degeneration is not well ...
Investigation of buckling of double-walled carbon nanotubes embedded in an elastic medium using the energy method | ScholarBank...
Elastic buckling of a long double-walled carbon nanotube embedded in an elastic medium and subjected to a far-field hydrostatic pressure is analyzed using the energy method. The study is on the basis of elastic-shell models at nano-scale, and the effect of van der Waals forces on the buckling is considered. The double-walled carbon nanotube is assumed to be thin and the tube is taken to be perfectly bonded to the surrounding medium. Both normal and shear stresses at the outer tube-medium interface are included. The difference between the Poissons ratio of the tube and that of the elastic medium is taken into account. An expression is derived relating the external pressure to the buckling mode number, from which the critical pressure can be obtained. As a result, the critical pressure is dependent on the inner radius-to-thickness ratio, the material parameters of the elastic medium, and the van der Waals force. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Vitrectomy - wikidoc
Conditions which can benefit from vitrectomy include: Vitreous floaters - deposits of various size, shape, consistency, refractive index, and motility within the eyes normally transparent vitreous humour which can obstruct vision. Here pars planar vitrectomy has been shown to relieve symptoms[3], however, because of possible side effects it is only used in severe cases. Retinal detachment - a blinding condition where the lining of the eye peels loose and floats freely within the interior of the eye. Steps to reattach the retina may include vitrectomy to clear the inner jelly, scleral buckling to create a support for the reattached retina, membranectomy to remove scar tissue, injection of dense liquids to smooth the retina into place, photocoagulation to bond the retina back against the wall of the eye, and injection of a gas or silicone oil to secure the retina in place as it heals. Macular pucker - formation of a patch of unhealthy tissue in the central retina (the macula) distorting vision. ...

Resveratrol inhibits transforming growth factor-β2-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in human retinal pigment epithelial cells by suppressing the Smad pathway Ching-Long Chen,1,2 Yi-Hao Chen,1,2 Ming-Cheng Tai,2 Chang-Min Liang,2 Da-Wen Lu,1,2 Jiann-Torng Chen1,2 1Graduate Institute of Medical Science, National Defense Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan; 2Department of Ophthalmology, Tri-Service General Hospital, National Defense Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan Abstract: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is the main cause of failure following retinal detachment surgery. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β2-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an important role in the development of PVR, and EMT inhibition decreases collagen gel contraction and fibrotic membrane formation, resulting in prevention of PVR. Resveratrol is naturally found in red wine and has inhibitory effects on EMT. Resveratrol is widely used in cardioprotection, neuroprotection, chemotherapy, and antiaging

79-year-old woman has noticed decreased vision in the top half of her vision in the left eye for two months. It has been waxing and waning. VISUAL ACUITY: Vision OD is 20/30, OS is 20/100. IOP: OD 23, OS 21. There is 3+ nuclear sclerosis in both eyes. EXTENDED OPHTHALMOSCOPY: OS: Vertical C/D ratio is 0.3. There is a posterior vitreous separation and an inferior retinal detachment splitting the macula. There are multiple demarcation lines suggesting parts of the detachment are very old. There appear to be some retinal holes at 6:00 oclock, but it is difficult to see because of the cataract. IMPRESSION: 1. INFERIOR CHRONIC RETINAL DETACHMENT WHICH HAS NOW EXTENDED THROUGH THE MACULA - LEFT EYE 2. CATARACT DISCUSSION: I explained to the patient that she does have a retinal detachment in the left eye. There are even some preretinal membranes and some of the retinal detachment is very old. Because of that, I suggested vitrectomy and scleral buckle that will allow me to adequately flatten the retina ...

The Formation of Tracheae and Tracheoles in Rhodnius prolixus | Journal of Cell Science
The formation of tracheae in Rhodnius is described by the hypothesis of expansion and buckling. The cuticulin lining is at first a smooth-walled cylinder. Later it expands equally in each direction, increasing in diameter but buckling in the axis. An engineering expression describing symmetrical buckling in a cylinder under uniform axial compression has been applied to this process. Agreement was obtained between the expected and observed values for buckling frequency and tube-wall thickness. The taenidia are formed within the buckles, their amplitude being proportional to the increase in diameter. The axial orientation of the chitin micelles in the lining membrane and the tangential orientation in the taenidia are consistent with their being oriented by the stresses expected during expansion and buckling. The formation of tracheoles may also be described by the expansion and buckling hypothesis.. ...

Small holes and tears are treated with laser surgery or a freeze treatment called cryopexy. These procedures are usually performed in the doctors office. During laser surgery, tiny burns are made around the hole to weld the retina back to into place. Cryopexy is a similar procedure that freezes the area around the hole.. Retinal detachments are treated with surgery that may require the patient to stay in the hospital. In some cases a scleral buckle, a tiny synthetic band, is attached to the outside of the eyeball to gently push the wall of the eye against the detached retina. If necessary, a vitrectomy may also be performed to treat more severe cases. During a vitrectomy, the doctor makes a tiny incision in the sclera (white of the eye). Next, a small instrument is placed into the eye to remove the vitreous. Salt solution is then injected to into the eye to replace the vitreous.. Early treatment can usually improve the vision of most patients with retinal detachments. Some patients, however, ...
