The objective of this thesis is to describe and analyse customs of science teaching in secondary schools and teacher education programmes in Sweden in relation to the notion of inquiry in science education. The main focus is on customs of language use and the educational goal of learning about scientific inquiry as distinct from the related goals of learning to do inquiry and learning canonical science content. There is also an exploration and description of different teaching approaches associated with inquiry. Previous research has noted that a key issue for reaching the goal of learning about scientific inquiry is the extent to which teachers are able to guide students to explicitly reflect upon this topic. This is at least partly due to scientists reluctance to speak about animal research, ironically stemming from anxiety about misrepresentation of their work, or even possible retaliation from animal rights activists.. Creativity facilitates scientists in their investigations of new problems or with a new orientation. However, K-12 science education typically does not acknowledge this aspect of creativity. Science/Technology/Society provides an avenue for creativity when addressing inquiry. The use of Cothron et al.s [1] four question strategy allows for a planning approach for inquiry.
The scientific method is an empirical method of knowledge acquisition which has characterized the development of science since at least the 17th century. It involves careful observation, which includes rigorous skepticism about what is observed, given that cognitive assumptions about how the world works influence how one interprets a percept. It involves formulating hypotheses, via induction, based on such observations; experimental and measurement-based testing of deductions drawn from the hypotheses; and refinement (or elimination) of the hypotheses based on the experimental findings. Tropical medicine revolves around empowerment, and sharing knowledge is a key concept regarding this. Many control programmes, such as mass drug administration programmes, will be undertaken in countries that have been previously neglected. Mass drug administration consists of distributing drugs in large numbers, often against worm infections, for prevention of a disease, rather than necessarily cure. Most commonly it is children in lower income countries that are infected heavily with worm infections. Daily practices, such as playing or not wearing shoes, unfortunately can increase the exposure of these children to certain worm infections. This constant exposure that is difficult to prevent has meant that mass drug administration has been highly successful in keeping the worm infections low, whether this is preventing reinfection, or treating an active one. I have a BS in biology with a specialization in neuroscience from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology from the University of Louisville. I originally came to the DC area for a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism where my research focused on the role of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in motor system development of zebrafish. During my postdoc at NIH, I developed an interest in science communication and policy. I co-chaired the Fellows Committee on Career Development and the Science Policy Discussion Group, and interned part-time in the Office of Research on Womens Health. The purpose of this case study is to reveal prospective science teachers knowledge and achievement levels in electricity-related subjects. The data for the study were collected from 44 prospective teachers using three measurement tools. The data were then analyzed using software developed for the Probability and Possibility Calculation Statistics for Data Variables method, developed by Yilmaz (2011). It was concluded that prospective science teachers achievement levels in mathematical logic in electricity-related subjects are influenced by their achievement levels in physics and basic mathematical procedures, as well as their knowledge levels. However, it was observed that the main influence on their achievement level in mathematical logic is the logical structure of knowledge, and not the knowledge level in the variables
