Committee Approves School Nurse, Response to Intervention Bills - New Jersey School Boards Association
On Monday, May 23, the Senate Education Committee held a hearing to consider several pieces of legislation impacting students and school districts. All of the bills were approved by the committee. The following provides a summary of each measure:. A-1256 / S-1381 would require State Board of Education regulations regarding school nurse certification to include certain minimum eligibility requirements. In June 2013, the State Board adopted amendments to the school nurse certification requirements, which reduced credit requirements for both instructional and non-instructional school nurse endorsements. The code amendments also eliminated the requirement that a candidate for a school nurse endorsement complete a college-supervised school nurse practicum. These changes stemmed from a recommendation of the Education Transformation Task Force, which released its final report in September 2012. The intent of these changes was to simplify certification requirements, address the mismatch between the ...

Also check out www.cdc.gov and flu.gov for more great resources to review before school starts--they are updated regularly.. Wallin: The best resource for planning is early immunization for regular seasonal flu. While the H1N1 vaccine may not currently be available, you should monitor the CDC for updates on your access to it. If you have sick kids in your school or class, review social distancing practices. I recommend that desks are pushed apart (at least 3 feet from each other on all sides) rather than in groups or pods. Paradise: I cant speak more highly of appointing a classroom health officer. GESTIÓN EN SALUD PÚBLICA: Teaming Up for Asthma Control: EPR-3 Compliant School Program in Missouri Is Effective and Cost...
This study demonstrates the substantial impact of educating school nurses on EPR-3 guidelines on FEV1, functional impairment, and quality of life. First, although other studies demonstrated application of asthma training for school nurses in single schools or small interventions (5,6,12,14), this study demonstrated a cost-effective, scalable approach to improving asthma control. Second, 7 of 10 children selected by school nurses who consented to participate had uncontrolled asthma. School nurses with EPR-3 training who used appropriate tools were successful in improving asthma control and lowering costs. Third, to our knowledge, few studies have effectively demonstrated both improvement in airflow (FEV1) and functional impairment, which may indicate that a weighted scale for functional impairment consistent with EPR-3 control criteria is necessary to correlate lung function and impairment. Fourth, this study demonstrated self-care education and coaching improved inhalation technique and ...

The doctor ordered a CT scan, and Robinson said she spent the rest of the weekend in the hospital alongside her son, who had suffered a cerebral contusion.. On Sept. 18, Michael was released from the hospital, and Robinson turned her attention to a school nurse, who Robinson said did not properly handle her sons injury.. My son is now traumatized. GoodTherapy | Addressing the Rising Mental Health Crisis in Public Schools
While school nurses are usually the most likely to catch any mental health issues early on, many schools only have one on-staff nurse, and many of these nurses only work part-time. It is not uncommon for entire school districts to share one nurse, meaning that one nurse may see hundreds or even thousands of students (depending upon the size of the district). This makes it more unlikely that a school nurse would be able to spot symptoms of mental health issues, as the nurse may not be available or have enough time with each student to address their needs.. According to the American Association of Pediatrics, schools function as the mental health system for approximately 80% of students. For this reason, school nurses play a critical role in identifying problems so they can be treated as soon as possible. Unfortunately, school nurses typically receive little to no training in mental health.. While nurses arent expected to be psychologists or therapists, they should be aware of emotional, ...
Self-mutilation in adolescents. | Center for Injury Research and Prevention
Self-mutilation is not a new trend or phenomenon in adolescents. Self-mutilation can be divided into three categories: major, stereotypic, and moderate/superficial. Moderate/superficial self-mutilation is the most common type in adolescents and includes cutting, burning, and carving. School nurses are positioned to identify, to assist, and to educate adolescents who are self-mutilating, as well as those who may be at risk. A crucial intervention by school nurses is referral of students who are self-mutilating, because it is a gateway to treatment. Treatment, which includes therapy and medication, may be a difficult and lengthy process. The adolescent who self-mutilates may find the school environment difficult during treatment. School nurses must become educated about adolescent self-mutilation in order to care for those who engage in this behavior. Prevention of self-mutilation should focus on increasing coping mechanisms, facilitating decision-making strategies, encouraging positive ...

More lenient school lice policies bug some parents | Serving Carson City for over 150 years
WASHINGTON - Some parents are scratching their heads over less restrictive head lice policies that allow children with live bugs in their hair to return to the classroom. And some school nurses are no longer sending home the dreaded lice note to other parents with kids in the classroom, alerting them to the possibility of lice in their own childs precious locks. The policy shift is designed to help keep children from missing class, shield children with lice from embarrassment and protect their privacy. Lice is icky, but its not dangerous, says Deborah Pontius, the school nurse for the Pershing County School District in Lovelock, Nev. Its not infectious, and its fairly easy to treat. Usually by the time an itchy child is sent to the nurse, Pontius says, the child has probably had lice for about three weeks to two months. She says classmates already would have been exposed. Theres little additional risk of transmission, she says, if the student returns to class for a few hours until the ...

Preparing families and institutions to manage anaphylaxis | Clinical and Translational Allergy | Full Text
Most (57-78%) of the recorded anaphylactic reactions in children occur at home and, second, in school or during school activities (5-22%). Children with food allergy are at the highest risk for death, especially if they also suffer from asthma, as most of the deaths attributed to anaphylaxis are due to severe unresponsive bronchospasm. There is a need of education of families and schools on how to prevent and manage anaphylaxis. The preparedness of schools is very variable across Europe, due to various health and education systems. In a national survey of school nurses in UK, more than 80% felt confident in the management of respiratory distress, airway obstruction and anaphylaxis, 77% had adrenaline and albuterol available, and 13% had oxygen. The situation in most countries of Europe is much worse than this, as school nurses are not present in many schools. The education for both families and schools must be directed to provide skills on how to identify severe reactions in children at risk, ...

During Kindergarten and First Grade all of Joes care was done in the Health Office. Those classrooms are in close proximity to the Health Office. While Joe did all of his physical care at that time, he relied on the school nurse to guide him verbally with blood sugar and carb count entries into his pump. In Second Grade, Joe continued to grow with his self-care and had made the calls when he should boost, when he should do a combo bolus of 0%;100% over 30 minutes when he was going into lunch with a borderline low (70s) blood sugar, and his carb counting and nutrition label reading were progressing. At the beginning of Second Grade, the school nurse came to his classroom for his morning snack check and bolus; he would go to the Health Office for his lunch blood sugar and bolus; the nurse would come to the classroom for the afternoon blood sugar check. The care in the classroom was taking the school nurse away from the Health Office too much, so all of Joes care was transitioned back to ...

On the other hand, some children feel very ill with small temperature elevations.. Conditions making students too uncomfortable to participate in class are also reasonable grounds for remaining at home. Examples are urinary tract infections, painful injuries, and nagging coughs. Sometimes the school nurse can help make students more comfortable and keep them at school. An example is the administration of pain medication as needed for healing fractures (see the section on Medications at School). Parents may also consult the school nurse with ...

TUESDAY, Sept. 19, 2017 (HealthDay News) - In the school setting, epinephrine injection training for individuals other than nurses may be beneficial, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics, held from Sept. 16 to 19 in Chicago.. Debbie Fischer has been a nurse for 34 years. She is the head nurse in her school district, but also is the school nurse for the 4 elementary schools in her district. During the summers, she teaches a class for new school nurses at the Department of Education. She values the time a child spends in the classroom, so she groups screenings together whenever possible. This minimizes the amount of time a child spends out of the classroom. Debbie measures the students by grade level and by classroom. By state law, certain grade levels require certain screenings. For example, with first graders Debbie measures height and weight and also conducts vision and hearing screenings. Generally, if the grade level has no additional screenings, it takes only 15 minutes for her to measure a classroom of 18-22 students. This year she has measured 1,300 students (4 elementary schools). Good Tips. ...

School Nurse Delays Teen From Using EpiPen After Major Allergic Reaction To Peanuts - Scary Mommy
Once on the phone with the nurse, her mom asked if her daughter had been given the EpiPen and if 911 had been called. The nurse had done neither. I was shocked that a trained medical professional was either unaware of the most up-to-date protocol for anaphylaxis, or unwilling to follow it, the mom explained. I told her administer the EpiPen and call 911 immediately. Sadly, even after the school called 911 the stress compiled when school officials sent Lia to the hospital alone.. It is ludicrous that a minor would be sent alone to a hospital during school hours with no personnel to represent her, her mom shared. I am horrified and saddened by the complete lack of common sense and compassion that predicated this decision. Its unclear what responsibility school administrators have when a student needs to go to the emergency room, but in such a life-threatening situation wouldnt we all want someone to be with our child?. We were in middle school when we learned how to use an EpiPen. My ...

Special Education Medical Review, Requirements Beginning July 1, 2016 PDF format (6/28/16) updated Registered Nurses (RN) who do not hold ISBE Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed as school nurse are prohibited from providing educational evaluation and instructional judgment of public school students. RNs who do not hold the PEL have been eligible to obtain the designation that permits them to provide such evaluation and judgment for students being evaluated for special education through a process maintained by ISBE. Since March, 2014, more than 700 Registered Nurses working in public schools have completed that process and obtained credentials as non-PEL RN with IEP privileges PreK-21.. Districts that still have need for an RN to perform the special education student medical evaluations are directed to first seek a RN with PEL, as outlined in the attached message, and if unable to secure a RN with that credential, read the announcement for additional information. ISBE will again offer ...

The school nurse has the authority to possess and administer epinephrine as a stock medication to use in the event of anaphylaxis, a severe and life threatening allergic reaction. There are students who experience their initial allergic episode during the school day and having access to epinephrine has prevented serious life threatening results. An Epi-pen provides a safe and easy delivery system of epinephrine that can be used by an unlicensed person. This module has been developed as a training tool for school staff and includes essential information about anaphylaxis and the use of an Epi-Pen. Each school nurse maintains a list of those staff members trained. We would like to thank the senior nursing students from the University of New Hampshire for participating in this project. ...

Beyond height and weight: a programme of school nurse assessed skinfold measurements from white British and South Asian origin...
Evidence increasingly suggests that South Asians have a characteristic phenotype of proportionately greater adiposity, increased insulin resistance and an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease compared with white Europeans.9 ,25 Using data from the BiB cohort (as used here), we have previously shown that similar ethnic differences appear to be present at birth.12 Specifically, we showed that, despite being born smaller and lighter, for a given birth weight Pakistani infants had similar triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness measurements to white British infants suggesting greater relative fatness; they also had higher cord leptin levels even without taking birth weight into account.12 ,14 In light of this, and in the knowledge that this greater fatness may underlie the increased risk of type 2 diabetes among South Asian populations,26 our aim was to develop a programme of growth monitoring to compliment routine height and weight assessments, that would be feasible to implement by school ...

Any medical records submitted to school districts automatically become educational records AND are no longer protected by HIPPA. If you submit psych records to the district as part of your childs eval, they become educational records, not health records. HIPPA does not cover schools. Even school nurse records are not considered health care records under federal law, and are not covered by HIPA. An exception is health care clinics inside schools, generally run by outside organizations. These would be subject to HIPPA, but generally speaking health care records sent in to a school district are no longer recognized as such when submitted. They are covered by FERPA ...
