Synovial sarcoma has traditionally been regarded as a high-grade sarcoma and treated as such. Recently, specific types of poorly differentiated synovial sarcoma have been defined and shown to affect prognosis adversely. We studied 104 primary synovial sarcomas of the extremities and trunk wall without metastasis at diagnosis that were retrieved from the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Registry (SSG) and the Swedish Cancer Registry from 1986 to 1994. Follow-up was available in all patients, median 6 (3-11) years for the survivors. There were local recurrences in 15% of patients and metastases in 33%. Histologically, the tumors were divided into favorable and unfavorable types. The favorable type had no significant cytologic atypia, and in most instances, no necrosis and a mitotic count of , 10/10 hpf. The unfavorable type included so-called poorly differentiated synovial sarcomas as well as recognizable biphasic and monophasic synovial sarcomas with prominent nuclear atypia, extreme cellularity and ...

The 6th and 5th centuries BC were a tipping point for exports and imports on the European continent. The ever-increasing conflicts and wars between the central European Celtic tribes and the Mediterranean cultures destabilized old major trade routes and networks between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean, eventually breaking them down, and changing the Scandinavian cultures dramatically. Now they had to be practically self-dependent and self-sustaining. Archaeology attests a rapid and deep change in the Scandinavian culture and way of life. Agricultural production became more intensified, organized around larger settlements and with a much more labour-intensive production. Slaves were introduced and deployed, something uncommon in the Nordic Bronze Age. The rising power, wealth and organization of the central European tribes in the following centuries did not seem to instigate an increased trade and contact between Scandinavia and central Europe before 200‒100 BC. At this point the Celtic ...

Students from undergraduate to PhD level have pooled their skills to publish two new books on Scandinavia.. Working with professional mentors, current and former BA, MA and PhD students have written, translated and edited the books, which will be published by UCL Scandinavian Studies Norvik Press.. Collaborating with software developers SourceFabric to test the new desktop publishing software BookType, a team of Nordic Cinema students wrote, peer-reviewed, edited, and published their own essays in Framed Horizons: Student Writing on Nordic Cinema.. The book is available as a paperback and will shortly be launched in e-book format. The production of Framed Horizons is a pilot project, with the longer-term ambition that students will be able to integrate transferable skills in publishing into learning and teaching. This project was made possible by funding from the UCL Enterprise Knowledge Transfer Champions scheme.. Meanwhile, another team has produced a series of new translations of Swedish ...

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are an emerging threat to cystic fibrosis (CF) patients but their epidemiology is not well described. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study we identified all Scandinavian CF patients with a positive NTM culture from airway secretions from 2000 to the end of 2012 and used national CF databases to describe microbiological and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: During the 13-year period 157 (11%) CF patients were culture positive for NTM at least once. Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABSC) (45%) and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) (32%) were the predominant species with geographical differences in distribution. Younger patients were more prone to MABSC (p,0.01). Despite treatment, less than one-third of MABSC patients with repeated positive cultures cleared their infection and a quarter had a lung transplant or died. CONCLUSION: NTM are significant CF pathogens and are becoming more prevalent in Scandinavia. MABSC and MAC appear to ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! A cost-benefit analysis of moose (Alces alces) harvesting in Scandinavia is presented within the framework of an age structured model with four categories of animals (calves, yearlings, adult females, and adult males). The paper aims to demonstrate the economic content of such a wildlife model and how this content may change under shifting economic and ecological conditions. Two different harvesting regimes are explored: landowner profit maximization, where the combined benefit of harvesting value and browsing damage is taken into account, and overall management, where the costs and damages of moose-vehicle collisions are taken into account as well. An empirical analysis of the Norwegian moose stock indicates that the present stock level is far too high compared with the overall management scenario, and that the composition of the harvest could be improved.

Jellyfish could be a resource in producing microplastic filters, fertilizer or fish feed. A new 6 million euro project called GoJelly, funded by the EU and coordinated by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Germany and including partners at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNNU) and SINTEF [headquartered in Trondheim, Norway, is the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia; more about SINTEF in its Wikipedia entry], hopes to turn jellyfish from a nuisance into a useful product.. Global climate change and the human impact on marine ecosystems has led to dramatic decreases in the number of fish in the ocean. It has also had an unforseen side effect: because overfishing decreases the numbers of jellyfish competitors, their blooms are on the rise.. The GoJelly project, coordinated by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Germany, would like to transform problematic jellyfish into a resource that can be used to produce microplastic filter, ...

Occupational welfare is a distinctive solution to contemporary social policy dilemmas. Though it plays a substantial role in many countries, especially in pension provision, occupational welfare and its subtle links to the welfare state have been largely neglected by social scientists. This book, a collaborative effort by a distinguished group of experts, offers in-depth studies of occupational welfare in the US and Scandinavia. These chapters are complemented by discussions of two partially contrasting cases (Canada and Japan), an introductory overview, and a concluding comparative analysis.

Objective. The prevalence of anemia in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been broadly described. The recurrence, type and burden of anemia remain unenlightened. The primary objective was to describe this. The secondary objective was to evaluate the implementation of European guidelines. Materials and methods. This longitudinal follow-up study included 300 IBD outpatients from six centers in Scandinavia. Patients were enrolled in a research cohort, in which each center included 5% of their IBD cohort. The study was prospectively planned, while data were retrospectively collected. The burden of anemia was calculated as number of months with anemia. A Markov model was used to calculate the probabilities of transitioning between stages. The European guidelines were used as the standard for anemia management. Results. Anemia affected andgt; 50% of IBD outpatients during the 2-year observation period. Totally, 20% of the total observation time was spent in anemia. Over the 7200 months of ...

Asbestos-ceramic is a type of pottery manufactured with asbestos and clay in Finland, Karelia and northern Scandinavia c. 1900 BC-200 AD. These pottery exhibit adiabatic behaviour. A certain vessel-type with insulating properties is also sometimes called asbestos-ceramic although it does not contain any asbestos. The most probable origin of this style of ware is the shores of lake Saimaa in Finland, which is the only place for richer easily accessible natural deposits of asbestos in its area of distribution. Finds from inland Finland are the oldest. In Finland real asbestos-ware is known from ca. 3900-2800 BC to ca. 1800-1500 BC. In northern Scandinavia, asbestos ware appears apparently from ca. 1500 BC to ca. 500 BC. Asbestos ware is usually classified under comb ceramic ware. From the times of the earliest comb ware (ca. 5000 BC) in Finland, asbestos was mixed with clay as an adhesive. At some point, people started to make use of the characteristics of asbestos: its long fibres allowed large ...
Currently, mesothelioma mortality surveillance is based on territorial cancer registries in Germany [50], on death certificates in Great Britain [9], and on both in the United States [51,52], whereas Italian ReNaM is one of the largest extent system of epidemiological surveillance for MM and also in the field of occupational disease monitoring [24]. By the early 1960s, while in the Great Britain, the United States and Scandinavian countries, asbestos consumption was already decreasing, unfortunately, the Italian consumption rose in the same period and began to decrease only when it was known a ban would be put in place [24]. The development of a complete national cancer incidence registry in the Scandinavian countries contribute to systematic linkage with occupational information archives [53-55]. The Italian ReNaM dataset has some critical limitations because its development has been non-homogeneous [24]. In Taiwan, the majority of asbestos used was imported with the amount peaking at 35,000 ...
Figure 3. Probabilities of Obtaining the Observed Genetic Differences, as Measured by FST, between Ancient PWC and Modern Population Samples under a Model of Population Continuity. Population sample comparisons are (A) PWC hunter-gatherers versus modern Norwegians, (B) PWC hunter-gatherers versus modern Swedes, and (C) PWC hunter-gatherers versus modern Saami. Probabilities were calculated by comparing observed FST values to those obtained by coalescent simulation across a range of combinations of ancestral effective female population sizes at the start of farming in Scandinavia 6,200 years ago (x axis) and the initial colonization of Europe 45,000 years ago (y axis). Observed FST values are indicated, and black shaded areas indicate p values , 0.05. View Within Article. These results indicate that the PWC hunter-gatherers are unlikely to be the main ancestors of either modern Scandinavians or Saami, despite their presence in Scandinavia at the early stages of Neolithization. On the contrary, ...

Food sustainability and gastronomy in the Nordic countries have in recent years been combined in several different aspects. Initiatives from fine-dining professionals have been supported by the Nordic Ministerial Council and further developed over a number of years. The welfare model with and increased focus on democracy and equality as well as reduction of poverty is emphasized in the Nordic strategy for sustainable development, which also discusses issues of the environmental load from food production, issues of biodiversity and waste reduction. Attempts to combine food production and export with healthy and sustainable aspects have been emerging during the last decades in the Nordic Countries. Assessment tools for evaluating sustainability as well as nutritional quality have been developed. The New Nordic Cuisine Manifesto has served as a platform for several of the sustainability developments in the region from fine dining to public meals. Another important initiative is the EAT Initiative,
So who is Joe Hill? Youd be forgiven for not knowing, many Swedes dont, but he is a hugely significant figure in the music universe. A son of Gävle, about 100 miles north of Stockholm, Hill, born Joel Emmanuel Hägglunde, migrated to the USA in 1902, making his way across the country and becoming a labour activist through membership of the Industrial Workers of the World movement. He became a songwriter and cartoonist for the IWW, releasing popular songs such as The Rebel Girl and The Preacher and the Slave, in which he first coined the phrase "pie in the sky" in the line "youll get pie in the sky when you die". He has come to be regarded as an icon of the workers movement in the U.S., the father of protest music and the Bob Dylan of his day.. In 1915 he was executed following a controversial trial for murder (some say he was "fitted up" by bosses and even by one of the unions) despite local and international appeals for clemency, two of which came from the then-President Woodrow ...
In the Devonian, the Old Red Sandstone continent (British term for sedimentary rocks of North Americas northeastern seaboard, Great Britain and Scandinavia) was built primarily via a collision of Laurentia (North Americas Precambrian cratonic core) and the continent of Baltica (Europe, Scandinavia and Siberia). The event uplifted the Caledonides Mountains of northern Britain and Scandinavia. In the Permo-Carboniferous, the South Hemispheric megacontinent of Gondwana collided with Laurentia at the expense of the intervening Rheic Ocean. Oceanic plate subduction triggered back-arc extension within the overriding plate. The extensional, fault-controlled basin that formed had the structure of an ancient rift valley with sedimentation, basaltic magmatism and sill intrusion of sediments in the Midland Valley region of central Scotland. Arthurs Seat represents the time-eroded and Ice Age glaciated remnants of a volcanic plug where magma lithified within its vent. ...

The richly decorated hilt and pattern-welded blade indicate that this sword was carried by a warrior of high rank, perhaps a Viking chieftain or a Frankish nobleman. The braided copper wires on the pommel may represent an earlier Scandinavian custom of tying a protective talisman to a sword hilt

In the least religious nations-which include Estonia, the Scandinavian countries, Hong Kong and Japan-the role of faith in public life can still be surprisingly complex, however. Phil Zuckerman, a sociologist at Pitzer College, spent 14 months interviewing people in Denmark, one of these hallowed lands where religious belief is low, yet peoples spirits are high. Just 19 percent of the population considered religion important, according to Dieners survey... ...Denmark and Sweden buck conventions in more ways than one. They have the lowest church attendance in the world. Ask them if they believe the basic tenets of Christian doctrine, and by and large they say they do not. "Even the vast majority of the clergy dont believe in God," Zuckerman says. Yet most Danes and Swedes baptize their babies, get married in churches and pay a tax that supports the church.. How the presence of the church contributes to Scandinavians well-being is an open question. The institution likely represents a sense of ...
