Faafafine are known for their hard work and dedication to the family, in the Samoan tradition of tautua or service to family. Ideas of the family in Samoa and Polynesia are markedly different from Western constructions, and include all the members of a sa, or communal family within the faamatai family systems.[10] Faafafine, as a third gender, have sexual relationships almost exclusively with men who do not identify as faafafine, and sometimes with women, but apparently not with other faafafine.[11] This third gender is so well-accepted in Samoan culture that most Samoans state that they have friendship relationships with at least one faafafine; it is, however, not totally accepted in other communities, such as some Catholic groups and traditional leaders. Traditionally, faafafine follow the training of the womens daily work in an Aiga (Samoan family group).[1][12] Faafafine state that they loved engaging in feminine activities as children, such as playing with female peers, playing ...

At birth, Samoan babies may be less heavy than expected, but they gain weight 20 percent faster than babies in the U.S. mainland. Breastfeeding appears to slow that gain for male babies but not for females. Credit: Mike Cohea/Brown UniversityStephen McGarvey, research professor of epidemiology and the studys senior author, said the babies were perhaps less heavy at birth than one might expect given the prevalence of obesity among their mothers, but the subsequent weight gain in early infancy was the studys most important finding. Rapid weight gain in infancy is widely understood to be a risk factor for adult obesity.. The median weight gain among the Samoan babies in the first four months of life was 978 grams a month, McGarvey said. That figure is almost 20 percent more than the 820 grams a month documented in a prior study of babies on the U.S. mainland.. The Samoan babies average weight gain curve, he said, resembled the trajectory epidemiologists see among undernourished babies who suffer ...

Tutuila Islands consists of five overlapping shield volcanoes. The lavas of all are predominantly olivine basalts, but picritic basalts, olivine-poor basalts, and olivine-free basalts also are present. Two flows of oligoclase andesite are found in the easternmost (Olomoana) volcano; both andesine and oligoclase andesites are present in the westernmost (Taputapu) volcano.. The pre-caldera lavas of Pago Volcano are predominantly olivine basalts, with less abundant olivine-poor basalts, and picritic basalts rich in olivine phenocrysts. The same types are present in the caldera-filling lavas, but the olivine-poor basalts are more abundant; andesites and olivine-free basalts also are present. The post-caldera lavas include olivine basalts, olivine-poor basalts, picritic basalts, andesine andesites, and oligoclase andesites. The picritic basalts differ from those in the earlier groups in containing numerous augite phenocrysts in addition to those of olivine. During the period of eruption of the ...

Hi, I love your blog. Seriously an answered prayer for an afakasi like me who grew up with my palagi side :) So my mother-in-law showed me how to make faapapa (shes Samoan, obviously)and she doesnt use the baking powder. I like the denseness that results in making it this way, but theres probably as many different ways of making most Samoan food as there are Samoans out there cooking it. Anyway, Ive never made pumpkin faapapa and I was just wondering if I could leave out the baking powder for this recipe without any serious consequences?? I plan on making faausi with it- which Ive never had, but REALLY want to try :) Faafetai lava & God bless!. ReplyDelete ...
A newly published study from the international Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) Consortium gives scientists a better look at the biology of height and offers a model for investigating traits and diseases caused by many common gene changes acting together.. Cambridge, Massachusetts - The largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) to date, involving more than 300 institutions and more than 250,000 subjects, roughly doubles the number of known gene regions influencing height to more than 400. The findings are published online in Nature Genetics.. Height is almost completely determined by genetics, but our earlier studies were only able to explain about 10 percent of this genetic influence, says Joel Hirschhorn, MD, PhD, of Boston Childrens Hospital and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, leader of the GIANT Consortium and co-senior investigator on the study. Now, by doubling the number of people in our study, we have a much more complete picture of how common genetic ...

Condom manufacturer Durex is urging New Zealanders to sign up online to become one of 100 condom testers. Already 3,000 New Zealanders, both men and women, have applied to become condom testers, according to Durex. Durex is recruiting the New Zealanders to test a new line of latex-free condoms. Durex claims it is using New Zealanders to test the new condoms because, according to the companys surveys, New Zealanders are adventurous in the bedroom. Victoria Potter, spokeswoman for Durex, said: The overwhelming response to date from Kiwis has certainly proven this. The 100 needed people for their tests will be selected in two weeks time randomly, the final date for sending in applications is January 31, 2007. The condom being tested is called Durex Avanti Ultima and is free of latex. Instead of latex, it is made of polyisoprene, the first condom to use it. Ms Potter said the new condom is exceptionally soft and will provide maximum comfort. The new condom will appeal to those who are ...

The authors conclude from the results that unmet GP need is associated with ethnicity, health need and financial and time constraints.. ...
This graph demonstrates changes in the origins of New Zealanders of overseas birth since 1961. Though migration from Britain and Ireland remained fairly consistent, it was proportionally less significant over time. Pacific Islanders were the first major group to arrive, and numbers of Pacific-born New Zealanders increased steadily into the 21st century. In the 2000s the growth in the Asian-born population was considerable, and migration from Africa, the Middle East and the Americas was increasingly significant.. ...

These questions are also crucial as part of scientific efforts to understand the role of early history of Pacific islanders on contemporary public health problems including obesity and associated non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and Type 2 diabetes.. A new study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences analyzed the genomes of 1,197 individuals in Samoa and found that the effective population size of the first Samoans was small - ranging from 700 to 3,400 people during the time period from approximately 3,000 to about 1,000 years ago. Starting about 1,000 years ago, population size rapidly increase to about 10,000 individuals, coinciding with increasing agricultural and socio-political complexity, but also with previously hypothesized contacts with other Oceanic peoples.. This population history scenario for Samoa is consistent with the existing archaeological evidence of few, widely scattered and small-sized settlements in the first 2,000 years after Samoas initial ...

The qualitative study, Eating less the logical thing to do? Vulnerability to malnutrition with advancing age, was recently published in the international research journal Appetite. It was completed by researchers at Masseys School of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition, led by Associate Professor Carol Wham.. The research explores the perspectives and experiences of older New Zealanders food intake to understand factors that may lead to malnutrition.. We know there is a problem with malnutrition among vulnerable older people who live in their own homes and this study goes some way to understanding this in more detail so we can begin to plan and implement strategies to address the problem.. Some participants reported they probably ate only half of what they had eaten in the past. Almost all participants ate less because they thought it was the logical thing to do given that they undertake less physical activity. Their low appetites mean they rarely feel hungry and many regarded eating as a chore. ...
New Zealanders are a fairly loose bunch - at least according to a recent study by Michele J Gelfand and co-authors [1] In a study involving 6823 people from 33 nations, participants were asked to rate the appropriateness of different behaviours in different situations (for example, is it appropriate to cry in a bank). Using the responses the subjects from each nation were then given a

Environment Minister David Parkers bull in a china shop approach to resolving freshwater issues in New Zealand is hindering progress on an issue of real importance to all New Zealanders, Nationals Environment spokesperson Scott Simpson says.. Kahui Wai Māori - the Māori Freshwater Forum was established just two weeks ago to resolve issues around Māori rights to fresh water and is now teetering on the verge of collapse after iwi leaders pulled the pin over a lack of consultation.. To be in this position at such an early stage is a defeat for a Minister who has stated he wants to be judged on his ability to make progress on water issues. This is only the start of a long, drawn-out legal battle that could put us back a decade or more in terms of progress on fresh water.. True to form Mr Parker has arrogantly dismissed the concerns of the iwi leaders. This Government continues to show that it thinks it knows best, that it does not want its ideas challenged, and that its quick to insult and ...
emk, your description of your B2 test as a party trick reminds me of the FSI 4 I got after 2 years in Samoa. I gamed the test every way I could, I pushed the test in directions I wanted to go; I distracted the tester when I was hitting a rough patch. After 6 years in Samoa, when I had scored 4+, when I would occasionally fake people out that I was some sort of native speaker, when I had written language textbooks in Samoan, when I had actually *edited* some writing done by native speakers, I still had solid areas of weakness. Drinking beer with the gang after work, when the voices, and my mind would get slurred, I could be completely lost sometimes in a conversation. I often could not get the point of Samoan comedians, and wouldnt even know when to laugh. Song lyrics could miss me completely. In no way was my Samoan as good as the English of many of the Samoans I knew, who had attended university in English ...

In 1992, Anoaʻi was contacted by Vince McMahon of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and offered a roster spot along with The Samoans (Fatu and Samoan Savage). On an August 17, 1992 episode of Prime Time Wrestling the Samoans (soon to be the Headshrinkers) made their debut. Commentator Gorilla Monsoon made mention of another, larger Samoan that they would soon be seeing in the WWF.[10] Anoai would make his initial debut as Kokina in an untelevised match on September 1, 1992 at a WWF Superstars taping in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Wrestling as Kokina, he defeated Ron Neal.[11] This would be the only time that Anoai wrestled under his former gimmick. Shortly after he was offered a new gimmick: Yokozuna. Managed by Mr. Fuji, Yokozuna debuted on the October 31, 1992 edition of Superstars and portrayed a sumo wrestler competing under the Japanese flag.[2] He wore a sumo thong as part of his ring attire, but wore long tights underneath the thong, something that Vince McMahon and Yokozunas own cousin ...

One possible explanation is what evolutionary psychologists call the kin selection hypothesis. What that means is that homosexuality may convey an indirect benefit by enhancing the survival prospects of close relatives. Specifically, the theory holds that homosexual men might enhance their own genetic prospects by being helpers in the nest. By acting altruistically toward nieces and nephews, homosexual men would perpetuate the family genes, including some of their own.. Two evolutionary psychologists, Paul Vasey and Doug VanderLaan of the University of Lethbridge, Canada tested this idea for the past several years on the Pacific island of Samoa. They chose Samoa because males who prefer men as sexual partners are widely recognized and accepted there as a distinct gender category-called faafafine-neither man nor woman. The faafafine tend to be effeminate, and exclusively attracted to adult men as sexual partners. This clear demarcation makes it easier to identify a sample for study.. Past ...
There is general agreement that frailty is common and important in later life, but there is less agreement about what frailty is. Little is known about the extent to which practicing health professionals and older people hold a mutual understanding of frailty. Focus groups were held to engage older people and health professionals in discussion about what made them think that someone was frail. Eighteen older people took part across three focus groups, and se'venteen health professionals took part across another three focus groups. Both the health professionals and the older people talked about the experience of frailty as an interplay of physical, psychological, and social dimensions. Older people with frailty were seen as needing help and being vulnerable to adverse outcomes, but accepting help was positioned by older people as an adaptive choice. The experience of frailty was described as being mediated by the individual’s psychological mindset, highlighting the importance of approaches
A New Zealand breast cancer survivor, who suffered years of pain from a ruptured silicone implant, has finally received her payout from a multibillion-dollar compensation fund - a paltry $600.. The woman, who did not want to be named, said she was surprised to get anything at all, after a decade of legal wrangling. Frankly, I had stopped hoping and just put it behind me.. In 1999, a United States judge approved a $US6.4 billion ($NZ9.3 billion) settlement deal for worldwide compensation claims (including 1200 New Zealanders) against the American manufacturer Dow Corning. But overseas claimants, including the New Zealanders, were offered only 60% of the amount offered to Americans because they were unable to sue in the US. They appealed, but lost the case in 2002.. Now 564 claims by New Zealand women of between $NZ872 and $17,442 have been settled. It is not known how many claims are still outstanding because some individuals had more than one claim.. In November, the United States Food and ...
NEW ZEALAND - Pressure is piling on Kiwi dairy farmers going into the 2015/16 season in the shape of further drops in world dairy prices and the possibility of Fonterras lowest farmgate price in thirteen years.
Well lie on the lawn. This is the job of the great lyric of course, to get into your brain and take up residence. Many New Zealanders will respond to Linn Lorkins classic Family At The Beach (1985) because it so wonderfully catches the feeling of Kiwi summer holidays. She brilliantly pulls this off by listing the names of uncles, aunts, cousins and siblings who came along to her family Christmas holidays. It helps that she also mentions how, at the Te Kaha Hall, she and her sister were second best in the local talent quest.. When Split Enzs Six Months In A Leaky Boat with its monster chorus -Aotearoa, rugged individual - became a hit in Australia, it was the first time many there knew we had a Māori identity. Finn also gave us a much-needed reminder of an unsavoury chapter in our history with his song ...
Friday 3 July 2009 12:22pm. Cost has been a major factor in causing thousands of New Zealanders to defer primary health care treatment according to a new study by the University of Otago Wellington.. The study by Dr Santosh Jatrana and Professor Peter Crampton shows that in 2004/5 there were significant financial barriers to people accessing GPs, prescriptions and dental care, and this was probably having an effect on the general and dental health of New Zealanders.. The study of over 18,000 people entitled Primary health care in New Zealand has recently been published in the international journal Health Policy. The data came from the Statistics NZ Survey of Family, Income, Employment and Health (SoFIE-Health) and carried out in 2004/5.. It shows that 16% of respondents at that time deferred visiting a GP, 23% put off going to the dentist and 7% deferred picking up a prescription in the last 12 months. This was even though the primary sector was 60% funded by the Government at the time of the ...

Back to donate. Thank you for considering donating to the New Zealand Labour Party or to one of our campaigns.. This document contains responses to the questions we get most asked by potential donors. If you have a specific question, or one which isnt answered below, please call us on: 0800 4522687 or email us on [email protected]. Why does Labour fundraise?. We fundraise for a number of reasons! Our goal is for a Labour-led government to lead New Zealand on behalf of all New Zealanders, not just the few. A large proportion of the donations made to us by our supporters goes towards the work needed to achieve that.. However, the Labour Party is also committed to campaigning across the country on behalf of New Zealanders, on the issues which matter most to us all.. Our headquarters team is small and efficient. Running HQ is not an expensive operation. However, there are some costs we cant avoid: we need a few full-time members of staff, and keeping IT systems up to date, and accessing printers ...

Today the universitys Wellington campus hosts the first major conference of mental health scholars since the Government issued its response to the inquiry.. The University of Otago has a spotlight series event annually so is always looking for areas of interest to New Zealanders, senior lecturer in psychological medicine Giles Newton-Howes said.. The mental health inquiry highlighted a number of really important issues for all New Zealanders, so this was clearly a sensible time for the university to think `what can we add to the conversation?.. Researchers from throughout New Zealand would be at todays meeting, and would discuss how to progress the inquirys recommendations and the Governments response to it, Associate Prof Newton-Howes said.. The interest from the Government in the sector is there, the money is there, and there is a drive to engage in some kind of change.. This is a way to ensure any change is evidence-based, efficient, and is going to deliver the best for New ...
Richard Wagstaff, Public Service Association (PSA) National Secretary, said This report shows that public servants want to make a difference, but are held back by poor workplace culture,. An incredible 1 million hours per year of unpaid overtime are worked to ensure New Zealanders can access quality public services, which demonstrates the commitment of public servants to their job goes way beyond what they are contracted to do, and is also a sign of unmanageable workloads.. Public servants say they are committed to making a difference and to their job and to the public they serve, but that commitment does not extend the organisations they work for.. Of real concern is the fact that one third of public servants have experienced bullying in the last six months, adding to the pressure faced by public sector workers.. Public service productivity, and the public services New Zealanders value, are continually hurt by harmful workplace culture including bullying and overwork, said Richard ...

Here is how a conversation for me goes in Iva where everyone speaks K. After the initial greetings which I understand, I try to catch a few familiar sounding words in K (where the K sound is substituted for the T sound in T). I convert the K word to a T sounding word. I translate the T word into English. From that one word or short phrase, I try to imagine the full context of the conversation. I then try the reverse response, thinking of an English word which I know in T and converting it to K. By that time, the speaker has already gone on to another subject. Rather than looking like an ass, I usually do the time tested response which is to smile and nod in agreement, like I understand what is said. The Samoan is amazed that even though I can hardly speak Samoan, I fully comprehend what he is saying. Of course, the reverse also happens when I speak in English ...

Now for the good news, the updated Long Tail chart shows a clear turning point about 40 days ago. A zero percent weekly growth rate represents a stabilisation of case growth, not a reduction of new cases. But stabilisation has to come first. There are clear signs that the pandemic in the Americas - the highest incidence countries in June and July - is now slowing.. My sense is that death growth rates will rise again before persistently falling in September; this is because deaths lag infections.. It is looking that, in August, increased testing globally is yielding fewer cases per test. Chile now has performed almost as many tests per person as New Zealand; and Australias testing rate is now double New Zealands. Likewise, the percentage of Americans tested is now double the percentage of New Zealanders. Brazils testing rate is now two-thirds that of New Zealand. Even sceptical Sweden is catching up to New Zealand. (New Zealands present rate of testing is about right for a country which has ...
