Xerostomia is estimated to affect 30% of adults over the age of 65. The condition is characterised by a lack of saliva secretion, resulting in a range of health problems. A rise in the concentration of free cytosolic calcium (Ca²⁺) is essential to initiate saliva secretion. We construct mathematical models of saliva secretion and Ca²⁺ dynamics in salivary acinar and duct cells. We investigate how the distribution of K⁺ channels affects the rate of primary saliva secretion. Maximum saliva secretion is hypothesised to occur when a small amount of K⁺ conductance is located in the apical membrane, with the majority in the basolateral membrane. Apical K⁺ channels have since been experimentally located. For a range of applied agonist, the concentration of Ca²⁺ in salivary cells is seen experimentally to oscillate and to travel in waves across the cytosol. We construct a model of Ca2+ oscillations in parotid acinar cells that requires paired oscillations of IP₃. This ODE model ...
This Is The Salivation Army is a zine from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, created by Scott Treleaven. The first issue of this black and white, cut and pasted, photocopied zine was released in 1996. Eight issues were published until the end of the zine in 1999. During this time editor Treleaven was interviewed in zines such as Broken Pencil and Fanorama (in which he was featured as a pin-up boy). The zine incorporated a vivid mixture of punk, goth, the occult and industrial music aesthetics. Articles about filmmakers Derek Jarman and Kenneth Anger were featured. Contributors included REB from Fanorama, G.B. Jones, and Paul Zevenhuizen of Infantile, among others. In 1997, Scott Treleaven appeared in the documentary film Zined! by Marc Moscato, talking about his publication. In 2002, Treleaven presented an overview of his zine experience in a film entitled The Salivation Army which quickly became a cult hit, playing at film festivals across North America and Europe and counting as issue 9 of the zine. ...
1. Thirty-eight synthetic compounds, all of them esters of disubstituted acetic acids, have been tested for anticholinergic activity against acetylcholine-stimulated ileal strips. One of them (158) proved superior to, and two of them (154, 96) proved equal to atropine in activity. The quaternary alkamines were generally more potent than their corresponding tertiary alkamines. Two compounds (79, 95) also exhibited significant antispasmodic action against barium chloride induced contractures in vitro.. 2. Five of the more active compounds were tested in the cat for atropine-like action on the intact intestines, and on salivary flow in the rabbit. One compound (158), whose spasmolytic effects were superior to atropine both in vitro and in vivo, exhibited ¾ of the inhibitory effect of atropine on salivary secretion.. 3. Eight compounds were tested for anticholinergic activity on blood pressure.. 4. The paralellism between the antagonism of drugs to nicotine-induced tremors and the satisfactory ...
Periodontal disease − Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory response of the periodontium to bacterial plaque deposited on teeth. Porphyromonas gingivalis is most closely associated with periodontal disease. Salivary biomarkers used for diagnosis and prognosis of periodontal disease include inflammation-mediating enzymes, epithelial keratins, immunoglobulins, salivary ions, and hormones.. Levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) are elevated in periodontal disease. AST can be used as a marker to monitor periodontal disease.7 Researchers have developed saliva kits based on an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to specifically detect AST in saliva in 90 seconds with 92% sensitivity and 96% specificity.. Caries activity − Saliva has preventive functions like flushing and neutralizing the oral cavity (called salivary clearance).1 The helpful buffers in saliva are directly proportional to flow rate, meaning that low unstimulated salivary flow rate can lead ...

Pavlov noticed that the dogs in the experiment began to salivate in the presence of the technician who normally fed them, rather than simply salivating in the presence of food. Pavlov called the dogs anticipatory salivation psychic secretion. From his observations he predicted that a stimulus could become associated with food and cause salivation on its own, if a particular stimulus in the dogs surroundings was present when the dog was given food. In his initial experiments, Pavlov presented a stimulus and then gave the dog food; after a few repetitions, the dogs started to salivate in response to the stimulus. Pavlov called the stimulus the conditioned (or conditional) stimulus (CS) because its effects depend on its association with food.[7] He called the food the unconditioned stimulus (US) because its effects did not depend on previous experience. Likewise, the response to the CS was the conditioned response (CR) and that to the US was the unconditioned response (UR). The timing between ...

Saliva has manifold functions in maintaining the integrity of the oral tissues, in protecting teeth from caries, in the tasting and ingestion of food, in speech and in the tolerance of tenures, for example. Salivary secretion occurs in response to stimulation by neurotransmitters released from autonomic nerve endings. There are two secretory pathways: protein exocytosis and fluid secretion. Sympathetic stimulation leads to the activation of adenylate cyclase and accumulation of intracellular cAMP. The elevation of cAMP causes the secretion of proteins such as amylase and mucin. In contrast, parasympathetic stimulation activates phospholipase C and causes the elevation of intracellular Ca2+, which leads to fluid secretion; that is, water and ion transport. Ca2+ also induces amylase secretion, but the amount is smaller than that induced by cAMP ...

Primary endpoint consists of a composite endpoint concerning meaningful improvement across 2 of 3 Sjögrens syndrome disease domains: oral, ocular, and laboratory tests. Oral improvement will be defined as ≥20% in the patients assessment of dry eyes (on a 100 mm VAS) or ≥20% improvement in total unstimulated salivary flow. Ocular improvement will be difined as ≥20% improvement in either the patients assessment of dry eyes by VAS or the results of the Schirmer test without anaesthetic. Laboratory improvement will be defined as ≥20% improvement in the serum IgG or the ESR ...
The sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system secretes adrenaline (epinephrine) in the core of the adrenal glands. The adrenaline passes into the blood, increasing the heart rate, increasing blood pressure, dilatating the pupils, opening the bronchi, etc. This is the fast, immediate path of stress. The one that facilitates fighting or the flighting.. After about 10 minutes, the slow path of stress begins to work. That of glucocorticoids (cortisol in humans). Cortisol is secreted in the cortex of the adrenal glands. Mainly it serves to generate energy from the reserves of the body (fats and proteins). The slow way replaces the lack of activity of the parasympathetic branch, whose function is to favor the recovery of energy with rest and digestion: lowering the heart rate, contracting the bronchi, closing the pupils, promoting salivation, etc.. We usually talk about sympathetic activation and we forget parasympathetic deactivation. But symptoms like dry mouth, difficulty breathing, ...

Remember that it will take time to adjust to the feel of your new bite. When the bite is altered or the position of the teeth is changed it takes several days for the brain to recognize the new position of your teeth or their thickness as normal. If you continue to detect any high spots or problems with your bite, call our office so we can schedule an adjustment appointment.. It is normal to experience some hot and cold sensitivity. The teeth require some time to heal after removal of tooth structure and will be sensitive in the interim. Your gums may also be sore for a few days. Warm salt water rinses (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) three times a day will reduce pain and swelling. A mild pain medication (one tablet of Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Motrin) every 3-4 hours) should ease any residual discomfort.. Dont be concerned if your speech is affected for the first few days. The first noted benefit of Coluracetam is in ameliorating the effects of glutamate neurotoxicity; cortical cultures were taken from fetal rats that had been treated with a substance that causes glutamate toxicity and these cultures were treated with Coluracetam for 12 to 24 hours. After this exposure period, it was found that Coluracetam ameliorated the effects of the exposure [1].. The second noted benefit of Coluracetam was in reducing the effects of learning deficits in rats, using the Morris Water Maze as a test. Adult rats in the experimental group were treated with a cholinergic neuron-specific neurotoxin and the control group was a population of healthy rats. In the experimental group, Coluracetam greatly reduced the learning deficits associated with the administration of the neurotoxin without causing any expected side effects such as tremor, hypothermia, or salivation. It would appear from this study that Coluracetam had less of an effect on the control group (the healthy rats) than it ...
The first step in making the diagnosis is to learn the pattern for each of these transgressions and then to ask if the pattern meets the necessary and sufficient criteria for a specific diagnosis. By using these conditions practitioners can ask if any signs exhibited by the patient-even if the signs are odd and, or rare-meet these definitional criteria. If the signs meet the criteria-even if the signs are not commonly associated with the condition-the dog is likely afflicted with the condition, regardless of whether it involves aggression, elimination, obsessive-compulsive behavior patterns, et cetera.. Necessary and sufficient conditions for defining selected behavioral conditions listed above:. 1. Separation anxiety-Necessary conditions: Physical or behavioral signs of distress exhibited by the animal only in the absence of, or lack of access to the client. Sufficient conditions: Consistent, intensive destruction, elimination, vocalization, or salivation exhibited only in the virtual or actual ...
General : Outside of a well-designed clinical study, ZINOTECAN Injection should not be used in combination with the Mayo Clinic regimen of 5-FU/LV (administration for 4-5 consecutive days every 4 weeks) because of reports of increased toxicity, including toxic deaths. Irinotecan should be used as recommended (see In patients receiving either Irinotecan/5-FU/LV or 5-FU/LV in the clinical trials, higher rates of hospitalization, neutropenic fever, thromboembolism, first-cycle treatment discontinuation, and early deaths were observed in patients with a baseline performance status of 2 than in patients with a baseline performance status of 0 or 1.. Diarrhea : Irinotecan can induce both early and late forms of diarrhea that appear to be mediated by different mechanisms. Early diarrhea (occurring during or shortly after infusion of Irinotecan) is cholinergic in nature. It is usually transient and only infrequently is severe. It may be accompanied by symptoms of rhinitis, increased salivation, ...

Background: One of the most common causes of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto´s Thyroiditis (HT). Early detection of dry mouth is critical in preserving and promoting systemic and oral health. In this study we have assessed, for the first time, salivary function and xerostomia in HT patients who have not been involved with Sjögren´s syndrome. Material and Methods: HT was diagnosed in 40 patients based on clinical findings and positive anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO). Controls, matched by sex, age and body mass index (BMI), and with no history of thyroid disease, were selected. A questionnaire was used for diagnosis of xerostomia. Saliva samples were taken between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and at least 2 hours after the last intake of food or drink. The flow rate was calculated in milliliters per minute. Results: Xerostomia was significantly higher in patients with HT. Unstimulated salivary flow rate was significantly lower in the HT group. Stimulated salivary flow rate was lower in HT ...

Over-the-counter availability of drugs in developing countries poses the risk of their abuse and overdosing in animals by the owners themselves. This report describes ivermectin toxicosis and its treatment with neostigmine methylsulfate in two kittens and an adult cat that had been massively overdosed by their owners. Of the two 4-wk-old 300g kittens, one (case-2) injected with 1.5ml (15mg; corresponding to 250 times that of general therapeutic dose) ivermectin by the owner became comatose, started salivation and died after two and a half hours. The other kitten (case-1) treated with about 0.75ml (7.5mg; corresponding to 125 times that of general therapeutic dose) of ivermectin by the same owner developed ataxia and salivation after two hours but went into coma next morning and was presented for treatment. Clinical examination of this kitten revealed mydriasis, coma, slight fever (102.4 °F), tachypnea (respiration rate 48/min) and severe tachycardia. This kitten treated twice at half hourly ...

8 NCCN Guidelines for Patients ® Nausea and Vomiting, Version 1.2016 1 Nausea and vomiting What can nausea and vomiting do to your body? How it starts Vomiting is when your stomach empties what is inside. Vomiting is caused by signals that come from: The CTZ ( c hemoreceptor t rigger z one) in the brain that helps the body recognize and get rid of toxic or dangerous substances Throat and GI tract ( g astro i ntestinal tract- organs through which food passes) The outer layer that coats the brain (cerebral cortex) The signals go from the vomiting center in the brain to your salivation center (where saliva is made) in your mouth. They then go to your stomach muscles, your breathing center, and the nerves in your brain. Your doctor can give you anti-nausea and vomiting drugs (antiemetics) to stop these signals. This is the science behind the nausea and vomiting you have. Nausea and vomiting can be hard to stop, which is why the word prevent is important in side effect care. Your medical team is ...

Teething is a natural phenomenon that usually occurs with little or no problems. Nevertheless, some infants or teething babies exhibit signs of stress or complications which includes rising of temperature, diarrhea, dehydration, increased salivation, skin eruptions and stomach disturbances. Increased fluid consumption, a non aspirin analgesic and palliative are consisting of the use of teething rings to apply cold and pressure to the affected areas generally reduce the symptoms and results in happier babies. Do not try to puncture or lance the gum tissues to aid the eruption of the baby teeth. If the symptoms mentioned above continue to persist for more than 24 hours , the baby should be examined by a physician to rule out any upper respiratory tract infection and any other disease conditions. RATIONALE FOR OUR APPROACHES TO NON-TOXIC REVERSAL OF CANCERS, PROFOUND IMMUNE SUPPRESSION, AND OTHER SYNDROMES: TRACK RECORD OF MAINSTREAM RATIONALIST APPROACHES TO CANCER. Early detection of cancer as many statistics can show, has had a significant impact on general morbidity and probably survival. Advanced cancers that become established may constitute a different disease than operable cases, and therefore our focus over the years has been more acutely focused on those cancers deemed terminal syndromes. However, it is generally acknowledged in the cancer community that directed and often-aggressive chemo-therapies, radiation therapies, or immune therapies constitute assaults on the cancer patient. Not only do these rational, target-directed approaches not increase life expectancy in most cancer patients, they cause significant harm in the form of bone marrow suppression, immune dysfunction, epithelial cell destruction, nervous system stress or destruction, loss of salivation and taste in ...

With the publication of the Gymnasium des Pferde by Gustav Steinbrecht in 1884, the first epoch of horse training is heralded. The recommendations contained in it were included in Army Service Regulation No. 12 for the training of cavalrymen. These form the basis of the Guidelines for Riding and Driving of the FN.. In the second epoch of horse training; conditioning takes place from the perspective of a predator. The basis is a reward system over the administration of food after showing the desired reaction. Pavlov observed salivation in dogs in 1905 as a reflex and used this uncoordinated reaction by coupling with a neutral stimulus to elicit a stimulus-response association (Pavlovian effect).. By observing the natural behaviors of wild horses since 1998, a possibility of communication between a human and a horse has been established. The basis is the body language (horsemanship, horse whisperer).. With the introduction of EBEC in 2010, the horse can be trained from a science-based, ...
