This paper reviews what we currently know about the benefits and costs of different varieties of a living wage: a local government requirement, now adopted by over 50 local governments, for wages above the federal minimum imposed on employers with some financial link to the local government. The review includes economic theory, empirical research on local labor markets, and empirical research on the living wage. The paper concludes that moderate living wage requirements applied to the local governments own employees, and contractors and grantees employees who are funded by the local government, may do more good than harm. Excessive living wages or living wages applied to non-city funded workers are more likely to have negative side-effects. The merits of living wages applied to economic development assistance depend on the local economys strength and whether this assistance program is used by the citys competitors. In a weak local economy, living wages applied to

This Public Policy Source provides a review of the economics of minimum wage laws and, in particular, of the empirical literature on some of the economic impacts of minimum wage laws. It also provides an overview of the Canadian data on who earns the minimum wage. By examining the incidence of the minimum wage, it is possible to determine whether the minimum wage is likely to achieve its official objective of raising the incomes of the poor. Most economists would likely agree that high minimum wages reduce employment opportunities for young and unskilled workers. Most would probably also agree that high minimum wages do not necessarily raise the incomes of the poorest members of society. Yet, in spite of this consensus about the economics of minimum wages, the minimum wage continues to be touted by politicians and policy-makers as an effective way to help the poor. This is puzzling, since the adverse economic impacts of the minimum wage have been extensively documented ...

Link to the fact sheet. Raising the minimum wage is an effective strategy for reducing poverty in New Mexico, particularly given the erosion of its purchasing power since it was last raised in 2009. In the legislative session that begins in January 2017, New Mexico lawmakers should enact legislation to raise the minimum wage to $12.50 per hour by 2021, if not sooner. This would establish a minimum wage that is roughly 60 percent of the states median wage. While this level for the minimum wage could not be considered a living wage, thousands of families would benefit-as would the states economy as that money was spent at local businesses.. In recent years the cities of Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces have acted to raise the minimum wage in their communities above that of the state. If the state raised the states minimum wage to $12.50 an hour by 2021 in the upcoming state legislative session, it would be the first minimum wage increase for the whole state since the present minimum wage of ...
A fringe benefit is an extra benefit supplementing an employees money wage or salary, for example a company car, private health care, etc. In Australia it is a benefit in respect of employment - a benefit provided to an employee (or associates) by an employer in the respect of the employment of the employee. The employee may be a current, former or future employee, and treatment of the benefit will be the same whether it is received directly by the employee or by associate of the employee. Note that an employee is different from a contractor, and fringe benefits are only for employees or associates.[3] There are several specific types of benefits listed in the legislation, including car fringe benefits, loan fringe benefits, housing fringe benefits and others. For each fringe benefit type, one or more methods is prescribed for determining the taxable value of the benefit.[4] ...
Downloadable! This paper examines the effectiveness of minimum wages as an anti-poverty policy based on the textbook labor market model and recent empirical research. In a competitive labor market, it is well known that minimum wages either have a negative or no effect on employment. In a monopsony labor market, a rise in the minimum wage rate may increase both wages and employment. Although most of the empirical research on this topic overseas show that an increase in minimum wages decreases employment, some research show that there is no effect on employment. In Japan, the negative effects of minimum wages on the labor market increased around the late 1990s. The increase in minimum wages is politically preferred as an anti-poverty policy because it does not need fiscal expenditures in the short run. However, it is not an effective anti-poverty policy because most minimum wage workers are not household heads earning more than 5,000,000 yen in annual household income. In order to cope with the increase

Hong Kong had some legislation relating to the minimum wage as early as 1932; the Governor was granted the right, but was not obliged, to establish a minimum wage.[2] The Trade Boards Ordinance also gave the governor (and after 1997, the Chief Executive) the power to set minimum wages for piece-rate and time-rate work, and established penalties for non-compliance.[9] However, no governor exercised these powers.[2] In 2006, legislators floated a proposal for a voluntary minimum wage.[2] The executive branch formed a Minimum Wage Provisional Commission in February 2009 to research and eventually set a proposed wage floor.[10] More debate came about on the possibility of a minimum wage in 2010. Legislator Tommy Cheung, who represents the catering functional constituency, suggested that the minimum wage be no greater than HK$20.[11] This earned him the derogatory nickname Twenty-dollar Cheung.[fn 1] He later amended his proposal to HK$24.[12] Lam Woon-kwong of the Equal Opportunities Commission ...

Your Metabolism Is Your Base Salary. Your particular metabolism is the same as your base salary. Your metabolism dictates the number of calories that you will burn on an average day. Your salary (metabolism) will likely be different than those around you, so the amount that you get paid (the number of calories you can burn) will also vary from those around you.. That being said, we can generalize for examples sake that an average female has a typical metabolism (salary) of approximately 2000 calories a day. The average male has a typical metabolism (salary) of approximately 2500 calories a day.. Your metabolism (salary) is a perfect break even point of the amount you are allowed to spend each day to stay on your budget (not gain or lose weight). If you spend less money (expend fewer calories) than your metabolism (salary) allows for a day, then you come in under budget and save money (lose weight). If, on the other hand, you use more money (consume more calories) than your metabolism (salary) ...

Minimum wage as a tool of welfare state is… detrimental. Economists word widely are quite unanimous with the fact that setting minimum wages for industries create unemployment and thus welfare losses. Usually this creates high barriers for especially young people and many immigrant groups to enter the job markets as they usually lack the experience in work life. The real problem with minimum wage is… that in the long run workers are paid according to their marginal productivity. In the case that marginal productivity of a worker is lower than the industry minimum wage, the worker gets unemployed against his or her will. Everyone should be allowed to work for a salary that they ...

Before we evaluate the merits of these new policies, lets first have a look at the detail.. By 2024, Mr Javid has committed to: Increasing the national living wage from £8.21/hour to £10.50/hour; Lowering the age at which a worker can start earning the national living wage from 25 to 23 by 2021 and Lowering the age at which a worker can start earning the national living wage from 23 to 21 by 2024.. These proposals would transform the British workforce into one of the most highly compensated in the world.. The Living Wage Foundation has welcomed this proposal as it brings the official wage rate into line with their estimations of a real living wage, currently set at £10.55/hour in London and £9.00/hour outside of London.. Furthermore, the treasury itself estimates that around 4m people will benefit positively from the proposals, each gaining on average an extra £4,000 per year.. However, the treasury is yet to say how much this will cost government and businesses, nor could the Chancellor ...

The idea is that to live a dignified life you need a living wage, enough money to live in a safe and decent home, eat healthy food, buy clothes when you need them, and pay for childcare and transportation.. Most importantly, it means not constantly stressing out about how to pay for all of that.. This is not a poverty wage. This is a wage that is very much about providing a decent quality of life to workers, Saulnier said at the launch. In order to calculate this living wage the CCPA researchers considered local conditions affecting the cost of basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, utilities transportation, childcare and emergencies.. The calculations are based on the needs of a family of four, two adult breadwinners working 35 hours per week, a four-year old in childcare, and a seven-year-old in before-and-after-school childcare. Taxes, EI deductions, as well as government benefits are included in the calculations. Tellingly, the budget includes the cost of two educational courses for ...
The average extra cost, across the world, to businesses in social security and other taxes of employing a worker is now almost 23% of an employees salary*, according to research by UHY, the international accounting and consultancy network.. UHY tax professionals studied data in 25 countries across its international network, including all members of the G7 and the emerging BRIC economies. Of major concern to the audience and panelists alike was the issue of a living wage, and there was a general consensus that minimum wage, perhaps even a guaranteed minimum income, should be about $15 or the equivalent salary. What is seldom understood in such discussions is that a minimum wage, or really anything measured in dollars, is a floating standard. Consider this. In 1964 the minimum wage was $1.25. Today minimum wage is $8. If you had a choice between the minimum wage of 2013 or the minimum wage of 1964, youd probably take the $8. But in 1964 US coins were made of silver, and the melt value of five silver quarters is about $20 today. So, $8 today actually purchases less than $1.25 did in 1964, despite the statutory trend always being to raise the minimum wage. We dont have a wage problem. We have a currency problem.. I have heard it said over and over that people are willing to pay higher prices if it means that employees are earning a living wage. But if companies raise prices there ...

Let me point out that there is no idea or concept more destructive and devastating to employment than the idiotic living wage one. Oh, it may sound noble and imply that the people pushing it care, but the reality is that the concept has about as much of a chance to exist in reality as a unicorn does. WTF is a living wage? Its the whole idiotic marxist concept that labor is what really is valuable, and not the end product or the demand for and ability to afford said product. This nonsensical approach to commerce is why marxists feel paying a doctor and a turd polisher the same amount makes for some kind of right and justice.. I will again state the blatant hypothetical situation. A turd, even when some idiot has spent 50 hours laboring to polish it, remains a turd. Nobody will pay any kind of money, let alone big money, for it. Marxism believes that because some fucking retard spent hours polishing the thing, it now suddenly has value. Not only that, but that someone wants to buy the stupid ...

Did you know that salary packaging could reduce the amount of income tax you may have to pay as an individual?. If you agree to salary packaging, you and your employer can package your salary into an arrangement of less income received after-tax, in return for your employer paying for benefits out of your pre-tax salary (which could include things such as a car or a phone).. If you, for example, received a yearly salary of $100,000, you and your employer could come to an arrangement of packaging the salary into $80,000 per year as income, and $20,000 as a car benefit. What this arrangement does is reduce the actual taxable income to $80,000, which may benefit you in that you may end up paying less income tax.. Benefits that you may be able to receive in a salary packaging arrangement can include fringe benefits, exempt benefits and super. In the case of fringe benefits, your employer will pay Fringe Benefit Tax on those benefits, whereas exempt benefits will not require them to do so.. If you ...

On August 18, 2015, the Birmingham, Alabama, City Council passed an aggressive wage and hour ordinance that raises the minimum wage to $10.10 by July 1, 2017. Presently, the minimum hourly wage in Alabama is $7.25, which is the minimum an employee must be paid under federal law. The State of Alabama does not have any laws that require payment of a minimum wage. Birmingham is the first and only city in Alabama to pass a minimum wage law, and in so doing, it follows the trend of other states and larger cities which have raised the minimum wage above the federally-mandated rate.. But Birminghams ordinance goes far beyond raising the minimum wage, imposing fines on employers who violate the law and creating private causes of action to allow employees to file lawsuits against their employers for wage violations and retaliation. The key provisions in the ordinance are as follows:. ...

Businesses looking to reward and retain staff members may wish to consider offering an electric vehicle (EV) salary sacrifice scheme.. Not only are many EVs better for the environment, but they could also offer businesses considerable savings.. Businesses can use employee salary sacrifice - similar to schemes offered for pension contributions, cycle to work schemes and childcare vouchers - to fund the purchase of new EVs in a tax-efficient manner.. In principle, salary sacrifice is simple, the employee sacrifices part of their salary and the employer invests this in a benefit - in this case, an EV. Using salary sacrifice saves the employee National Insurance Contributions (NICs) and Income Tax.. However, in recent years HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has taken a tougher approach to many salary sacrifice schemes, which has often made them less effective.. Thankfully, a special exemption was put in place for ultra-low emission vehicles to encourage motorists to swap their petrol and diesel cars for ...

Data source: author.. According to the National Education Association, starting teachers salaries clocked in at around $41,163 in the 2020-2021 school year. Thats about $3,430 per month. As a result, theres a potential path to multimillionaire status that involves starting out as a 22-year-old teacher fresh out of college, investing around 7% of your salary in the market, and just holding on.. Thats where automatic enrollment is such a powerful tool. In Minnesota, for instance, teachers contribute 7.5% of their salary toward their retirement plan - with the school system also contributing. As a result, its quite possible for a career teacher to wind up with $2 million by retirement at 65.. Most teacher retirement plan contribution formulas are based on a percentage of the teachers salary, so as that salary increases over time, so will the actual dollar amount getting invested. Those increases are important for any teacher looking to retire with $2 million, as market returns are not ...
If we look at the salaries of associate professors, we discover that there was relatively the same number of them making below $100,000 from 2004 to 2008 (949 in 2004; 960 in 2006; 936 in 2008). Once again, this points to relatively flat salaries for everyone else except full professors at the top. It is also important to note that the numbers of faculty in each of the ranks stayed almost the same between 2004 and 2008. For instance, there was 3,112 full professors in 2004, and in 2008, there was 3,208. This statistic tells us that the increase of compensation was not caused by an increase in the number of full professors; rather, we find that the average salary in this rank went up $18,000 during this period, and the biggest increases went to the people at the very top. In comparison, the average assistant professors salary increased by $5,000 from 2004 and 2008, and the average associate professors salary increased by $11,000 ...

Thailands 300-baht-per-day ($9) national daily minimum wage will be scrapped next year to be replaced by the old system where wages vary by each province based on the cost of living, labour ministry permanent secretary Nakhon Silpa-archa was quoted by Thai media as saying at a seminar of wage committee members on June 5.. The minimum wage came into effect on January 1, 2013. Since then all of Thailands employers had to pay all employees at least 300 baht a day. If they didnt, they faced six months in jail and/or a 100,000 baht fine for not complying. The policy was the fulfillment of a 2011 election campaign pledge by Yingluch Shinawatras Pheu Thai party.. It remains undecided whether the daily minimum wage will be higher but the Wage Committee decided on December 8, 2014 to reinstate the old regime where wages vary by the cost of living and the economy of each province, he said.. The ministry is studying the feasibility of floating wages and an appropriate way to set the rates, he ...

But it would cost jobs, Republicans warned.. The political divide over raising the federal minimum wage is deep, driven by politics, ideology and demographics. Democrats represent more low-wage workers than Republicans do.. According to the Census Bureau, nearly every congressional district with a large concentration of poor people is represented by a Democrat. There are 40 House districts where at least 20 percent of families live in poverty. Thirty-eight are represented by Democrats. The government defines poverty as an annual income below $11,670 for a single person living alone, and below $23,850 for a family of four.. Of the 100 poorest districts, Democrats represent 73.. The Census Bureau says 43 congressional districts have per capita incomes under $20,000 a year. All but 10 are represented by Democrats.. Obama and Democrats in Congress are making a big push to raise the federal minimum wage. Its part of their effort to highlight income inequality, an issue they plan to emphasize in ...
In 2013, the minimum wage rose to 30 HKD and a further 32.50 HKD in 2015. In 2017, the government increased the rate to 34 HKD, which was 6.2 % from the previous increase (in 2015).. Even though there is an increase in the minimum wage, this amount is far lower than in most developed countries. For instance, the minimum wage in Australia (which is the highest worldwide) is $13.60 per hour. In Germany, the minimum wage is $10.10 an hour while in Taiwan, the minimum wage stands at $4.90.. Hong Kong government has promised to increase the minimum wage to 44 HKD if the countrys GDP improves in the future. This directive follows the 17 % economic growth since 2011, which contributed mainly to the increase of minimum wages per hour from 28 HKD in 2011 to 37.5 HKD in 2019.. Despite the increase in wages, the new rates cannot substantially change the prevailing living standards of many workers. Unless this rate increases to a minimum of 54.70 HKD, the lowest-paid employees may not achieve the living ...

Damn LJs Blog Interface…But I have the rest of the post, saved…arg. its jsut bad reposting like this all the time…. I saw another survey on Library Journal comparing the average salary for men in this field to the average salary for women. Men: ~46,000; Women ~41,000. The reason behind this disparity is already known by avid AL readers as the Girls Club Syndrome. In short, this phenomenon occurs when librarians gather around the water cooler and in the break room and generally anywhere there is a place to chat. However, since this is a Female dominated profession, these groups stare down their noses at the male librarians, as they are either below them, because they hold a womans job, or against them, because they hold a womans job. As such, these male librarians have nothing left to do but focus on their work and either go up the ladder into management or progress to a much better job elsewhere. Either way, this average mans salary goes UP and the womens salary stays ...
