Safety considerations are very important when conducting any research with recombinant DNA technologies to control or prevent possible adverse outcomes of the research. When designing our project, we asked ourselves if our project ideas would raise safety issues in terms of researchers safety, public safety or environmental safety. While it is not necessary to steer completely clear of research agendas that might pose safety risks because of their possible positive benefits, it is important to account for those risks by implementing safety protocols to protect the health of the researchers, public and environment. Because no organism or biobrick part we used is from an infectious organism, we use no human cell lines or cultures, no biological toxins or toxin coding regions and do not release our organisms into the environment for testing, the safety considerations of our project are less than the projects of many other teams. Our project is done in two phases. First, the construction of genetic ...

A key element of our efforts to increase safety is the global Brenntag Enhanced Safety Thinking (BEST) programme. It focuses on the safety behaviour of Brenntag employees at all levels within the company, which is the primary cause of accidents in more than 80% of cases. Based on action plans, various programmes and measures were implemented in the Brenntag regions and national organizations in the year under review to promote safe behaviour and to correct dangerous behaviour. These centre on regular and extensive communication on safety aspects, greater involvement and motivation of employees and increased visibility of exemplary safety leaders within the company.. The programme is based on the Safety Behaviour Standard, a framework encompassing the key behaviours expected at Brenntag that contribute to creating a safe environment and safe work. The introduction of individuals (clients) who are not necessarily familiar with the building or the office routine can create safety issues. Also, if the clients are disabled or frail elderly, then mobility or sight impairment could exacerbate these safety issues. Use of restrooms or kitchen facilities by clients can pose problems if safety practices are not in place. If clients or members of the public come to the reception area to either make donations or payment for goods and services, then money-handling could present safety and security issues. Staff members need to understand the safety practices associated with all office activities. Activities such as mail and package delivery, filing, computer usage, and storage can pose safety hazards if these activities are not in keeping with safety recommendations.. ...

Some 40,000 abandoned mines are on Forest Service lands. Of that number, 34 percent were mines with records of mineral production such as arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury and zinc that can cause human health and environmental problems. The boom and bust of mineral development left a mixed heritage that now serve as historic resources, wildlife habitat, acid drainage and safety hazards.. Each year, a number of people are killed - in 2012 there were 15 reported deaths, mostly by drowning - or injured in abandoned mines on public and private lands nationally. The Forest Service works to minimize the human health and safety hazards of abandoned mines while preserving the historic and wildlife habitat resources they provide. But you are responsible for your own safety.. Abandoned mines can be above or below ground. Both are extremely dangerous and pose the following safety hazards:. ...

Electricity enters the farm through a control panel and a main switch where a person can shut off all the power in an emergency. This control panel contains either fuses or circuit breakers. Always use the correct fuse for the panel. Never use a greater number, or replace fuses with items like pennies. If there is a stoppage in power, check the control panel. If fuses are used, look for the broken metal strip in the top of a blown fuse. Replace the fuse with one that is marked with the correct amperage. If circuit breakers are used, reset them from off to on.. Be sure to check why the fuse or circuit blew. Possible causes are frayed wires, overloaded outlets or defective appliances. Never overload a circuit with high voltage appliances. Check the wattage on appliance labels. If there is frayed insulation or a broken wire, a dangerous short circuit may result and cause a fire. Circuit testers are available to inspect circuits. If power stoppages continue, or if there is a frayed or broken wire, ...

Recently, I had the honor of joining the governing board of Together for Safer Roads (TSR), a coalition of companies across various industries collaborating to improve road safety. As a company, CalAmp has been a TSR member since 2017. I think both my personal and the organizational commitment come from the same place: an appreciation of how crucial the together part is in the road safety equation.. TSR is founded on the principle that road safety is a shared responsibility, and the only way to significantly reduce the toll - 1.3 million deaths and 50 million injuries annually - from traffic collisions is through a tremendous effort of cross-industry collaboration. Nowhere is this principle better reflected than in TSRs diverse membership roster, including AIG, ABinBev, AT&T, CalAmp, Ericcson, Lyft, Pepsico, Republic Services, UPS, Walmart and many others.. For me, the wisdom of looking at road safety as a shared responsibility is that you begin to see opportunities for shared solutions - ...
In addition to risk-taking behavior, we propose that psychological safety also promotes prosocial behavior through cooperative goal interdependence. To differentiate these two types of effects, we contrasted the moderating effects of two interpersonal harmony motives. A survey in China supported the indirect effect of psychological safety on helping behavior through cooperative goal interdependence. This mediated relationship was moderated by harmony enhancement such that the mediated effect of psychological safety was weaker when harmony enhancement was high. Psychological safety was positively related to innovative behavior, and this relationship was moderated by disintegration avoidance such that it was weaker when disintegration avoidance was high. These results shed light on the different effects of psychological safety and their underlying mechanisms.. ...

Sweden has a long tradition of systematic road safety work, of considering road traffic injuries as a public health problem, and of addressing these issues at the national government level. In October 1997, the Swedish Parliament formally adopted Vision Zero as a new long-term goal and direction in road traffic safety work. Vision Zero aims influence road safety work at all levels: guiding direct efforts to make the infrastructure safer, as well as indirectly influencing the institutional preconditions and approaches (culture) that encourage ongoing action by stakeholders to increase the safety of the road transport system. Vision Zero differs from a more traditional road safety policy with regard to problem formulation, its view on responsibility, its requirements for the safety of road users, and the ultimate objective of road safety work. This presentation will provide an overview of the tenets of Vision Zero, summarize the implementation efforts in Sweden, and discuss potential relevance to ...

By Emily Wilmes, University of Minnesota Extension. ST. CLOUD, Minn. (9/28/16) - Tractors and large field equipment are the most common causes of farm accidents, injuries, and deaths. They are a necessary part of farm work, but exercising caution when using them is crucial in preventing accidents. I am passionate about all areas of farm safety, but especially equipment safety. Its very personal for me, as my dad lost his leg in a farming accident involving equipment when he was only 18. I dont want any farmer to go through what my dad went through, so pay attention to safety.. First and foremost-read the safety manual. Also, pay attention to any safety or warning decals on the equipment. Before operation, be sure to inspect the equipment for any safety hazards. During inspection, also identify all safety hazards including: moving parts, pinch points, crush points, pull-in areas, and free-wheeling areas. Be sure anyone who is going to be using the equipment is aware of these areas as well. ...

A great deal of the issue with manual safeties is glossed over by gun users, most of whom appreciate very little of what goes into the internals of gun design.. Some guns simply need manual safeties, period. Some manual safeties are poorly designed - eg, the Remington 700, for example. Some safeties are very well designed - the Mauser rifles, and subsequently, the Winchester Model 70 was (IMO) the pinnacle of bolt-action rifle safeties, as examples.. Some handguns needed to be loaded in a certain manner to be considered safe - eg, the original Colt SAA. You were thought to be flirting with danger if you loaded all six chambers in the cylinder - because if you dropped the SAA on its hammer, or snagged the hammer sufficiently hard, even with the hammer not cocked, most likely there was going to be a discharge. So lots of people loaded one, skipped one, loaded four, and then holstered it - and now your hammer was over an empty chamber. So now, for you kids, this is how you load an old single ...

Is it a reasonable expectation of parents that our children are safe when playing on a playground? Safety standards, especially those related to playground safety surfaces, play a huge role in answering this question. But are the safety standards really safe? It could be argued that they currently are not.
This document outlines a standard practice for conducting system safety. The system safety practice as defined herein provides a consistent means of evaluating identified risks. Mishap risk must be identified, evaluated, and mitigated to a level as low as reasonably practicable. The mishap risk must be accepted by the appropriate authority and comply with federal (and state, where applicable) laws and regulations, executive orders, treaties, and agreements. Program trade studies associated with mitigating mishap risk must consider total life cycle cost in any decision. This document is intended for use as one of the elements of project solicitation for complex systems requiring a systematic evaluation of safety hazards and mitigating measures. The Managing Authority may identify, in the solicitation and system specification, specific system safety engineering requirements to be met by the Developer. These may include risk assessment and acceptance criteria, unique classifications and ...
The transformation of South Columbia Street is just about complete. Motorists and pedestrians who, for the last couple of years, have navigated around barricades and lane closures now can travel between Manning Drive and South Road smoothly and safely. As part of the Universitys overall strategy to improve pedestrian safety, the Campus Pedestrian Safety Committee advocated mak-ing that heavily traveled section of South Columbia more pedestrian friendly and creating improved access to both sides of the street. In the process, University officials worked with the Town of Chapel Hill and the N.C. Department of Transportation to give the area a makeover, both functionally and cosmetically. That process included moving the sidewalk away from the curb to create a safety buffer for pedestrians, creating separate designated bus and bicycle lanes, adding a new bus shelter and creating a new cross-walk and signal at Medical Drive. When electricity is connected to the signal within the next few weeks, ...

The Risk Management Committee was formed by the Town Board in March 1999 to promote safety and health issues for all employees. The Committee also coordinates these issues between the various Departments of the Town and follows up outstanding recommendations to be reported to the Town Board.. In March 2001 it was decided that the Committee should place increased emphasis on safety considerations for the benefit of both the Town and employees and the Town Board expanded the name to Risk Management and Safety Committee. When considering a potential switch, the FDA is tasked with weighing the benefits of enhanced access against the incremental risks greater access will pose. In doing so, the FDA will generally consider the efficacy and safety profile of a drug based upon the studies conducted to gain Rx approval, as well as the clinical knowledge gained from first-hand experience of the product usage on the Rx marketplace. In addition, the FDA requires additional studies with consumers demonstrating that they can use the product safely in an OTC setting without third-party intervention.. In todays switch environment, the FDA appears to place much of their emphasis in evaluating switch candidates on the safety aspects of a product. This is creating a unique challenge for sponsors as many of the products identified in this report as potential switch candidates are now about to face generic competition after being on the Rx market for over 10 years. This means their original safety and efficacy studies were ...
