Catholicism Today- UNDERSTANDING TODAY'S CATHOLICISM Some of the more striking features of Catholicism include its imposing size, its vast sphere of influence, its unity, and its contrasting diversity. Gaining an appreciation of each of these characteristics can help us better understand contemporary Catholicism. Size. The size of the Roman church is astounding. Just less than eighteen percent (17.7) of the entire world population is Roman Catholic (a whopping total of over 928 million people, soon to be a billion).2 Additionally, the church is truly universal in scope, having parishes in virtually every major part of the world. There is a significant Catholic presence on every continent, with the possible exception of Asia. The following are some percentages of Catholics in the world: Africa, 13.9; North America, 24.2; Middle (central) America, 86.6; South America, 88.9; Europe, 39.9; Oceania, 26.5; and Asia, 2.7.3 In terms of other religious bodies, the Roman Catholic population is larger than ...

It is sometimes said that when science and theology conflict, this is because we are dealing with bad science or bad theology or both bad science and bad theology. This may be in fact true of a number of apparent conflicts between science and theology.. But even if this is in fact true, one shouldn't elevate such an observation into a necessarily true principle. Here is one reason to think this. We learn from history that good science is often wrong. (Can one say the same about theology? That may depend on whether one restricts to the theology of a true religion, and on how speculative one allows theology to be and still count as "good".) Unless science and theology have completely logically disjoint subject matter, so that no proposition of science can possibly entail or be incompatible with a proposition of theology, it seems quite possible to have a case where a proposition p is such that (a) p is good science, (b) p is false, and (c) not-p is good theology.. Objection 1: Science and theology ...

Feminist theology began to establish itself in the 1970's.During that decade the journal Concilium was launched to promote feminist theology, the first conferences were held to discuss feminist theology in the U.S., the World Council of Churches held a conference in Berlin on sexism, and Mary Daly published Beyond God the Father.11 Like liberation theology, to which it is closely linked both historically and theoretically, feminist theology draws upon and criticizes Marxist thought. Religion is interpreted in such a way that its primary function is seen as liberation, liberation of the poor in liberation theology and of women in feminist theology. Feminist theology may be divided into moderate and radical tendencies. The moderate tendencies advocate reinterpretations of the established religions to purge them of what are considered sexist or androcentric elements. The radical tendencies advocate a rejection of patriarchal religious thought in favor of the worship of one or more goddesses or even ...
Jesus is God, therefore His love, His Thirst, is infinite. He, the creator of the universe, asked for the love of His creatures. He thirsts for our love... These words: 'I Thirst' - do they echo in our souls?" -St. Teresa of Calcutta. During the years I spent living with the Missionaries of Charity, St. Teresa of Calcutta's spirituality felt like anything from the most gorgeous spiritual revelation to the most biting poke in the spine of my soul - it was, clearly, a spirituality born from the deepest, most entangled roots of Catholicism. To this magnanimous Saint and her followers, serving Christ meant answering His cry of Thirst from the Cross - even if it meant laying down one's very life in the most grueling fashion. In honor of this message, Mother Teresa made sure that in every one of her convent chapels, the words "I THIRST" would be posted next to a bloody crucifix, in bold black, serving to remind all of God's most extraordinary love. Years after her death, these words continue to show ...

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), an inherited haemoglobinopathy, have increased risk of malaria, at least in part due to impaired splenic function. Infection with Plasmodium falciparum in SCD patients can trigger painful vaso-occlusive crisis, increase the severity of anaemia, and contribute to early childhood mortality. A 17 year-old Tanzanian male with known SCD was admitted to Muhimbili National Hospital, a tertiary referral centre in Dar-es-Salaam, following an attack of malaria. From 2004 to 2007 the patient had lived in USA, and from 2010 to 2016 in France where, on account of hypersplenism and episodes of splenic sequestrations, in 2014 the spleen was removed. After appropriate clinical and laboratory assessment the patient was re-started on hydroxyurea; and anti-malarial-prophylaxis with proguanil was instituted. The patient has remained well and malaria-free for the following 15 months. SCD patients are highly vulnerable to malaria infection, and impaired splenic function is a feature

Many Protestant Christian denominations, including the Anglican Church,[17] Lutheran Church,[18] and Methodist Church,[19] have also welcomed the Big Bang theory as supporting a historical interpretation of the doctrine of creation,[20] although other denominations, such as the Baptist Church,[21] have contested the theory.[22] Christians in denominations teaching Old Earth creationism,[23] Intelligent Design,[24] or evolutionary creation support the reconciliation of the Big Bang with the Genesis creation narrative.[25] Young earth creation scientists contest the Big Bang Theory, stating that it is scientifically unsound, and that that sound biblical exegesis points to a young earth and universe.[26] Judeo-Christian theologians who hold to a young earth perspective argue that the Scriptures point to a young earth interpretation.[27] Christianity, Judaism and Islam teach the concept of creatio ex nihilo, with supporters of the Big Bang theory in these religions pointing to the Divine as being ...
The New York Times op-ed claims the religious right's hostility to science is crippling U.S. coronavirus response; reaction from Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council.. Psychologists seeking to explain evangelical Christians' opposition to LGBTQ activism attributed this suspicion to "zero-sum beliefs" (ZSBs), the sense that as anti-LGBTQ bias decreases, anti-Christian bias increases. While the psychologists concluded that Christians' fears are baseless, Christian academics disagreed.. In "Is LGBT progress seen as an attack on Christians?: Examining Christian/sexual orientation zero-sum beliefs," published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Clara Wilkins, associate professor of psychological & brain sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, and her team of five other psychologists concluded that Christians' zero-sum beliefs about "conflict with sexual minorities" trace back to their understandings of Christian values, social change, the Bible, and ...
