Rights groups reacted angrily, saying the bill contradicted Russian and international law. They also said it would make the lives of gay teenagers, who could be embarrassed or scared of coming out, even harder. This is a direct path to discrimination and legitimises violence, said one gay rights organisation, Coming Out. While claiming to be about protecting young people, the law will do quite the opposite and will push gay teenagers towards isolation and suicide ...
In order to understand Russias aims towards Ukraine, we have to know two things. First is to focus not on Vladimir Putin as an individual or on What Putin Wants, but on the modus operandi of Putins Russia, which is encapsulated in the term political technology. Second is to recognise that Russia, therefore, has few real core beliefs. But one of these core beliefs is Putins repeated assertion that Ukraine is not a real country. We cannot always know Putins next step. But we should assume this is the general plan: Russia will go as far as it can to prove that assertion, but it will work within the paradigms of political technology.. Russias root problems include corruption and an explicit great power disdain for small states sovereignty. But what is unique about Russia is its political culture. Not inevitable authoritarianism, which is a myth spun by that culture - the Western myth that Russia is doomed to autocracy is the mirror-image of the Russian myth that the country can only ...

The mobile phone industry in Russia has expanded rapidly to become one of the largest in the world. In 1963, Russias first mobile phone network using the car phone came into operation. Initial selection of technological mobile standard in Russia had been left for market forces by issuing licenses for different standards. Later, regulatory authorities have developed stricter policy. However, there still exists a great variety of both analogue and digital standards. NMT standard was a first generation analogue mobile technology that still has footstep in Russia, employed by commercial mobile operators since the early 90s. Regional operators have deployed the GSM networks in Russia since 1995, originally in the 900 MHZ frequency band. GSM standard is dominating in Russian mobile market with small number of NMT-450, AMPS/DAMPS subscribers. In 1994, a joint venture of Moscow City Telephone Network, T-Mobile and Siemens, which later became part of Mobile TeleSystems, offered Russias first mobile ...

Look at everything Washington has accused such rogue states of doing, none of it has any evidence whatsoever. Much like they will never provide a shred of proof that Russia is behind the downing of a commercial airliner, because there is no evidence! Washington already had its propaganda PR machine in motion while the crash site was still smouldering and people can still tell me that they either partly or wholly werent behind it? There news networks were running 24/7 Russia! It was Russia, without a shred of evidence! Then when asked to produce evidence, they have none. Recently, once they realised that the blame Russia angle wasnt really making progress, theyve gone on to missiles launched in to Ukraine from Russia, the evidence a grainy cold war type satellite image showing two craters, with added arrows apparently showing trajectory of missiles. What a load of BS! Even thats gone quiet ...
Despite Endless Western Propaganda, Russia Not Collapsing And how many people would have believed that Russia would have to sell rubles because the ruble was getting too high? Well, thats exactly what happened in the past two weeks. The ruble got too high and so Russia had to sell rubles to keep it down. Six months ago when I was talking with you about this crisis, the ruble was in freefall and everybody thought Russia was collapsing financially. There was endless propaganda in the West about the collapse of Russia. I kept telling you that Russia would come through this crisis just fine and they are. Russian/Chinese/German Alliance But circling back to Chinas large investment in Germany, it suggests a Russian/Chinese/German alliance. Ive also spoken about the fact that China plans to build a train that will go from the key Greek port up to Budapest, Hungary. From that point there is only one country separating Hungary from Germany and thats Czechoslovakia. Whats interesting is that the ...
The Danish government has had it with Russias hostility toward its LGBT citizens and has sent a warning to the anti-gay countrys leadership.. PinkNews has the story:. Denmarks Foreign Minister, Villy Søvndal warned Russia they would raise the issue at the European Council and potentially take the issue to the United Nations should Russia continue down its current path. He said: The law is objectionable. It risks fostering discrimination and the abuse of minorities in Russian society - something we have already seen examples of, and to which the law gives the stamp of approval. We will hold Russia to its international obligations.. Crown Prince of Denmark, Prince Frederik who is the Olympic Committees representative for Denmark has also added his voice to the debate and warned Russia that they are acting contrary to the Olympic Charter and Russia must not partake in discrimination against any minority group.. div.clearfix::after {clear: right} ...

The Danish Energy Agency has signed an agreement to support a renewable energy project in Russia. As part of the agreement, Denmark will purchase CO2 credits from the project under the joint implementation mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol. The project reduces CO2 emissions by 446,000 tons until 2017 which is approximately equivalent to the annual emissions of 11,000 Danish households. The project includes the rehabilitation of the heating system in the Russian city of Priozersk which is located 150km north of St Petersburg, close to the Finnish border. Most of the current heat supply in the city comes from a 70-year-old combined heat and power plant that will be shut down and replaced with new and smaller boiler houses. The project covers two boiler houses: one wood-chips boiler house and a combined biomass (wood-waste and bark) and gas boiler-house. During the winter, temperatures in Priozersk can fall below minus 20 degrees Celsius and the citizens are therefore dependent on a reliable supply ...

The largest country in the world has only really opened up to travellers from the western world in the last few decades, and now many adventurous tourists are discovering the wonders of Russia. MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V has demonstrated a high level of efficacy and safety during the trials and national vaccination, Russian Deputy Health Minister Viktor Fisenko said on Tuesday.. The deputy minister added that the decision on the registration of the vaccine was made given its high efficacy, including the information regarding the safety of the use of the adenoviral vector platform that had been used to develop other vaccines of the Gamaleya center.. Fisenko stressed that this decision was reasonable amid the pandemic, because it gave an opportunity to protect the Russian population from the virus within a short term.. Earlier in the day, the head of the Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, Alexander Gintsburg, said that Sputnik V has been thoroughly tested and that major foreign vaccine producers had followed their example.. In August, Russia became the first country in the world to register a COVID-19 vaccine, named Sputnik V. The ...

According to ETnews, a South Korean government official commented, When it comes to competitive edge of hydrogen fluoride, Russia is either equal or superior than Japan. Additionally, a spokespoerson for South Koreas Blue House commented, We absolutely need to put in effort to reduce dependence on a particular country and there is a need to expand partnership with Russia and Germany that have an advantage in chemical industry especially.. However, this doesnt meant that South Koreas plans of diversifying away from Japan to Russia are set in stone. Another government representative elaborated to ETnews that, Although no one mentioned during the meeting that Russia is offering to supply hydrogen fluoride to South Korean businesses, we did have a discussion about diversifying supply network of materials and a possibility of working with Russian Government. Although it is unclear whether Russia will supply hydrogen fluoride, South Korean businesses will look to change their supply lines if ...

After it has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Russia did indeed meddle in the US elections in a meaningful way, and after it has then been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Russia actually influenced election results in a significant way, and after the case has been clearly made that it was bad and wrong for Russia to do this instead of fair and reasonable, and after it has been clearly proven that the election meddling went beyond simply telling Americans the truth about their government, the question then becomes what, if anything, should be done about it?. If you look at the actions that this administration has taken over the last year and a half, the answer to that question appears to be harsh sanctions, NATO expansionism, selling arms to Ukraine, throwing out diplomats, increasing military presence along Russias border, a Nuclear Posture Review which is much more aggressive toward Russia, repeatedly bombing Syria, and just generally creating more and more opportunities for ...
In April, a German cargo ship was prevented from docking at Tartus. The ship allegedly carried a cargo of munitions sent by Iran to the al-Assad regime.. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.N. ambassador Susan Rice used the claim to accuse Russia of arming the al-Assad regime.. The new Russian weapons supplies add to Syrias massive arsenal of hundreds of Soviet-built combat jets, attack helicopters and missiles and thousands of tanks, other armored vehicles and artillery systems, the AP reported after Clintons accusation that Russia had sent attack helicopters to Syria. Russia said it also has military advisers in Syria training the Syrians to use the Russian weapons, and has helped repair and maintain Syrian weapons. Some experts alleged that the helicopters Clinton said were en route to Syria could be old ones that underwent maintenance in Russia.. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has denied the accusation. In a statement on June 15, he said that many years ago Russia sold ...
Between 1999 and 2008 Russia experienced a flare-up of transmission of vivax malaria following its massive importation with more than 500 autochthonous cases in European Russia, the Moscow region being the most affected. The outbreak waned soon after a decrease in importation in mid-2000s and strengthening the control measures. Compared with other post-eradication epidemics in Europe this one was unprecedented by its extension and duration. The aim of this study is to identify geographical determinants of transmission. The degree of favourability of climate for vivax malaria was assessed by measuring the sum of effective temperatures and duration of season of effective infectivity using data from 22 weather stations. For geospatial analysis, the locations of each of 405 autochthonous cases detected in Moscow region have been ascertained. A MaxEnt method was used for modelling the territorial differentiation of Moscow region according to the suitability of infection re-emergence based on the

A collaborative Russia-U.S. research program on western gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) summering off northeastern Sakhalin Island, Russia, has been ongoing since 1995 and has produced important new information on the present day conservation status of this critically endangered population. This interim report reviews preliminary findings from 2007 research activities and combines such with data from previous years, in some cases ranging back to 1994. Photo-identification research conducted off Sakhalin Island in 2007 resulted in the identification of 83 whales, including nine calves and two previously unidentified non-calves. When combined with data from 1994-2006, a catalog of 169 photo-identified individuals has been compiled. Not all of these 169 whales can be assumed to be alive, however. The most current mark-recapture analyses conducted estimated the abundance for the population to be 98 (95% CI=89-110) in 2002 and 99 (95% CI = 90-109) in 2003. A recent population assessment using a Bayesian

Over the last 20 years, the Russian Federation has voiced repeatedly the willingness to embrace its Asian potential. Harnessing the economic prowess of the Asia-Pacific for the development of Siberia and the Russian Far East was the underlying motivation of Moscows pivot to Asia. Before the Ukraine crisis, the gravity of Russias pivot was protracted. Its engagement with Asia was seen as a counterbalance to the West rather than as a genuine embrace. This instrumentalized approach gave Russias policy a disingenuous feel, leaving no particular imprint on the Asia-Pacifics economic and security architecture. Since the onset of the Ukraine crisis, Russia intensified its engagement, marking a qualitative shift in its relations with the Peoples Republic of China. With the flourishing Sino-Russian strategic partnership at the forefront, the relationship developed mutual economic necessity and geopolitical underpinning.

To date, all work related to the study of HIV tropism, was performed on HIV B and C subtypes. In the studied samples, HIV variants of subtype A were virtually absent. However, the existence has been shown previously of some differences in the nucleotide sequences in the V3 loop of env region of subtype A from other subtypes of virus. In the Russian Federation the subtype A of HIV-1 is predominant, and, according to some estimates, accounts for about 89% of all newly diagnosed cases of HIV infection. Thus, it seems interesting and effective to study the characteristics of HIV-1 subtype A, associated with the tropism, in the Russian Federation.. The primary objective is determination of the prevalence of R5 (chemokine receptor 5), X4 (chemokine receptor 4), and R5X4-tropic variants of HIV in HIV-infected population in Russia, and analysis of the possible features of tropism of viruses belonging to subtype A. ...

Moscow) - Migrant construction workers in Russia face widespread abuse both in and outside of the workplace, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. In a climate of rising hate-motivated violence against migrants, exacerbated by the global financial crisis, the Russian government is failing to protect these workers from abusive employers, employment agencies, and police. The 130-page report, Are you Happy to Cheat Us? Exploitation of Migrant Construction Workers in Russia, documents widespread withholding of wages, failure to provide required contracts, and unsafe working conditions by employers at construction sites across Russia. It also details cases in which workers were unwittingly trafficked into forced labor by employment agencies that promised construction jobs in Russia, but then delivered workers to employers who confiscated their passports and forced them to work without wages. In some cases, these workers were confined and beaten. Migrant construction workers come to ...

The project investments amount to 150-200 million Euros. As Delovoy Peterburg reports, the city Administration has it in mind to support the method of waste incineration, which is no longer used in Europe. DP says that the representatives of Milieu SPb have submitted a letter to the Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Oleg Virolainen, asking to allocate a land spot to build the incineration facility. The estimated annual capacity of the workshop is 500 thousand tons of solid household waste. Afterwards, the City Planning and Architecture Committee proposed three options to locate the incineration unit. The first is the area next to the Yuzhnaya Steam Power Plant in the Kolpino District, the second area is at the intersection of Moskovsky and Kolpinsky highways in the Pushkin District, and the third one is nearby the testing ...

By Dave Majumdar. The United States is willing to work jointly with Russia to conduct stability operations in a post-ISIS Syria. Those stability measures could include jointly monitored no-fly zones and cease-fire observation missions. But exactly how such arrangements might be implemented are likely to be the subject of intense negotiations-and could be derailed by wayward proxies on the ground.. The United States and Russia have previously worked together during peacekeeping operations in the Balkans during the 1990s, but Moscow is not likely to be as willing to make the same kinds of concessions today that Boris Yeltsins government did when the Kremlins power was at a near historic low point. Todays Russia under the leadership of Vladimir Putin is much more likely to demand an equal partnership in Syria than the severely weakened state that emerged in the aftermath of the Soviet Unions collapse.. The United States is prepared to explore the possibility of establishing with Russia joint ...
India and Russia have agreed to establish a joint Science and Technology Commission.. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi announced the commission at the conclusion of the BRICs summit, a get-together of leaders from Brazil, India, Russia and China.. The event saw Russia and India announce deeper ties around civil use of nuclear energy and a plan to explore a gas pipeline between the two nations. This plan looks fanciful: India and Russia dont share a border so a pipeline would have to pass through either China, via the Himalayas, or through Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and the disputed zone of Kashmir. India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir, but at the summit Modi called Pakistan the mothership of terrorism. Which wont do anything to cool tensions between the two nations, or make it easier to place a pipeline through Kashmir.. Few details of the new Commission have been revealed beyond Modis statement that Through this our societies will reap the benefits of joint development, transfer and ...

Chance first and foremost talks about Russias increased military growth, bombing campaigns in Syria Moscows concentration of arms in Crimea and the occupied territories in eastern Ukraine. Russia appears to have staged a comeback on the global stage, transforming itself to a power a G20 simply cant ignore. Even if they wanted to» Chance says.. Russia is not on par with the United States, says political analyst Maria Lipman in the CNN story, but it has positioned itself as an important player.. ...

TY - RPRT. T1 - Genetic variation among major sockeye salmon populations in Kamchatka peninsula inferred from SNP and microsatellite DNA analyses. AU - Khrustaleva , A.M.. AU - Limborg, Morten. AU - Seeb, J. E.. PY - 2014. Y1 - 2014. N2 - Sockeye salmon samples from six populations from Kamchatka Peninsula were tested for polymorphism at six microsatellite (STR) and forty-five single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci. These populations included the five largest populations in the region. Statistically significant genetic differentiation among the local populations from this part of the species range examined was demonstrated. The STR variability points to pronounced genetic divergence of the populations from two geographical regions, Eastern and Western Kamchatka. The results of SNP analysis further revealed that the populations of the two northern Kamchatka rivers (Palana River and Pakhacha River) differed significantly from the other populations studied. We estimated the efficiency for both ...
About 16 years ago, I had the privilege to travel to Russia. Our trip involved a couple of days in Vladivostok, a city in the Far Eastern part of Russian, on the border of China, as well as a day in Moscow. The trip between Vladivostok and Moscow covers 10 time zones, resulting in our arriving at essentially the same time as we left, even though we were in the air for about 10 hours!. During our brief trip to Russia, I was impressed with the size of the country, its rugged beauty, its cold, and its need. A missionary there told us of the challenges he faced in sharing the gospel and the spiritual darkness that exists across much of the land.. There was a time that Russia was wide open to missionaries and to Christian work. It seems that now the doors are less and less open. But we need to be praying for this country, for the believers that are there, for the doors to open, and for laborers to be able to take the gospel to the nearly 150 million people that need Jesus.. Here are a few statistics ...
Member of the Syrian National Coalitions political committee Michel Kilo said that Russias announcement of a so-called eight-hour humanitarian pause in Aleppo on Monday is a gimmick aimed at crushing the rebels resistance and quashing the revolution.. Kilo said Russia and the Assad regime are determined to pursue a military solution to the conflict, adding that Moscow is using new destructive weapons in its onslaught on Aleppo, including the use of bunker-buster bombs against civilians in populated areas.. The veteran opposition figure stressed that the political deadlock in Syria has left Russia internationally isolated, therefore Moscow is trying to end this isolation by showing willingness to halt the bombing of Aleppo for just few hours. Such false gestures of goodwill are meant to give the impression that Russian and the Assad regime are not bent on pursuing a military solution, despite their continual escalation of military operations across Syria.. Russian ship with helicopters for Syrian regime sets sail again: A Russian ship carrying refurbished attack helicopters destined for Syria has weighed anchor from its Arctic port for a second time after failing to deliver the cargo last month. The Alaeds previous attempt to convey the Mi-25 gunships to the regime of of President Bashar al-Assad under a Curaçao flag caused anger in London and Washington. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the aircraft would be used to kill innocent civilians. The ships new destination is unclear but maritime data show it was travelling south off Norway on Thursday and is due in Baltiysk on the Baltic coast of Kaliningrad, Russias exclave between Poland and Lithuania, on July 17.. A spokesman for Femco, the Russian company which owns the cargo vessel, said on Friday that it would arrive in St Petersburg two days later and may then head to the Russian Far East.. MOSCOW (AP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin remained tight-lipped about his future role Wednesday as he fast-tracks a set of constitutional changes widely seen as an attempt to maintain his dominance over the nations political scene after his current term ends in 2024.. Asked at a meeting with students if Russia could follow the example of Kazakhstan, where a longtime president stepped down last year but continued calling the shots by assuming another prominent position, Putin shrugged off the idea as unfit for Russia.. The emergence of a position above the presidency would mean a dual power, which is absolutely unacceptable for a country like Russia, Putin said. It would erode the presidency.. The 79-year-old Nursultan Nazarbayev, who had ruled Kazakhstan since the Soviet times, resigned as president last year and had a protege elected to the post, but he retained his grip on power by securing a prominent position as head of the nations security council.. Last week, Putin proposed a ...
The grandeur of the Czars, the brutality of Soviet regime, the literary masterpieces baring the Russian soul, and the onion domes of the cathedrals all have captivated the imagination of generations of travellers. Now Russia is shedding its Soviet past and creating itself anew. The palaces, cathedrals, and statues are all still there. But todays Russia is cynical and hip and full of contrasts. Trendy art galleries replaced the Soviet factories in many cities and fierce capitalism has created the wildly rich. More billionaires live in Moscow today than anywhere else, where restaurants, nightclubs and shops have taken luxury to a new level. In the new Russia, it seems anything is possible.. ...
The challenge for Indigenous peoples is that their traditional knowledge is not included in education and research. UArctic has taken this seriously. Those are the words of Dr Mikhail Pogodaev, a Board member of UArctic.. Mikhail Pogodaev is Even, of Indigenous reindeer husbandry background. He lives 5,000 kilometers east of Moscow, in the city of Yakutsk in the Russian republic of Sakha, and has a PhD in economy from St Petersburg State University. Outside his office, the temperature has been incredible - minus 50 degrees Celsius for weeks. Inside, we find a burning engagement for higher education for Indigenous people and including Indigenous knowledge in Arctic science activities.. The challenges of Indigenous peoples in the Arctic have to be taken more seriously by UArctic. Thus I have been honored to represent the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russian Federation on the Board, Pogodaev says.. In working on the new strategic plan of UArctic, Pogodaev has in particular engaged with issues ...
1230 views. WASHINGTON. Russia hacked into Republican state political campaigns and old email domains of the Republican National Committee but there is no evidence it successfully penetrated President-elect Donald Trumps campaign, FBI Director James Comey said on Tuesday.. Comey also told lawmakers Russia did not release information obtained from the state campaigns or the old RNC email domains, comments that may buttress the U.S. intelligence view that Moscow tried to help Trump against Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 campaign.. U.S. intelligence agencies on Friday released an assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a covert effort to help Republican Trumps electoral chances by discrediting Clinton.. The report, which omitted classified details, was the U.S. governments starkest public description of what it says was a Russian effort to manipulate the American electoral process by leaking hacked emails from Democrats.. Russia has denied interfering in the election but ...
Russia exercised its right of veto to block a US-drafted resolution to extend the mandate of the international commission of inquiry on Syria, after the resolution had 11 votes in favour by members of the UN Security Council.. This is the tenth Russian veto to prevent a resolution that could convict or result in the conviction of the Syrian regime. On 24/10/2017 Moscow had cast the 9th veto against another US- drafted resolution seeking to extend the mandate of the International Commission investigating the chemical attacks in Syria.. The commission works to determine the responsible party for the chemical attacks in Syria. The commissions mandate the Security Council had issued in 2015, expires on Friday. Today, Friday 17/11/2017, Japan submitted a draft resolution to extend the work of the commision by one month, in order to ensure the continuation of the commissions work as usual during the process of negotiations between the US and Russia.. These findings highlight Russias desire to ...

This work constitutes a macro-sociological study of suicide. The empirical focus is on suicide mortality in Russia, which is among the highest in the world and has, moreover, developed in a dramatic manner over the second half of the 20th century. Suicide mortality in contemporary Russia is here placed within the context of development over a longer time period through empirical studies on 1) the general and sex- and age-specific developments in suicide over the period 1870-2007, 2) underlying dynamics of Russian suicide mortality 1956-2005 pertaining to differences between age groups, time periods, and particular generations and 3) the continuity in the aggregate-level relationship between heavy alcohol consumption and suicide mortality from late Tsarist period to post-World War II Russia. In addition, a fourth study explores an alternative to Émile Durkheims dominating macro-sociological perspective on suicide by making use of Niklas Luhmanns theory of social systems. With the help of ...
Canadian cross-country skier Devon Kershaw was floored by the International Olympic Committees crackdown on Russia because he had zero faith anything would happen.. The IOC punished Russia on Tuesday for the widespread evidence of state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, banning the country from competing in Februarys Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.. Athletes from Russia who prove theyre clean can participate as neutrals without the Russian flag and anthem, the IOC said.. Im flabbergasted that the IOC did anything, Kershaw told The Canadian Press from Norway. I mean, look at their track record.. Id pretty much lost all faith in the IOC.. The three-time Olympian had led the charge for Canadas first Olympic medal in mens cross-country skiing for over a decade, finishing fourth in team sprint with teammate Alex Harvey at the 2010 Vancouver Games. A Russian duo won gold that year.. Those moments that were robbed, you dont get them back and it doesnt ...
Russian corruption will cast its shadow over South Koreas Winter Olympics that will be held between February 9 and 25.. For decades, the Games, notably the winter ones, have handed Russia its greatest public relations coups. Unable to deliver decent living standards or democracy to its people, the Kremlin has concentrated instead on gold medals in hockey or gymnastics to garner respect at home and abroad.. But now an incredible documentary has lifted the curtain on Russias dirtiest little secret: Corruption at the top has metastasized throughout its society and onto its ice rinks, ski slopes, and gymnasia. Through a state-sponsored program, the Russians cheat and they have been caught.. Now Russia is banned by the Olympic Committee indefinitely, beginning with these Winter Games. Icarus, the documentary that brought this scandal to light, has been nominated for the Academy Awards Best Documentary. The documentary and its filmmaker Bryan Fogel deserve that and more.. The film opens with ...

Posted on 04/10/2014 1:16:29 AM PDT by wetphoenix. With Nato assessments that there are some 40,000 Russian troops massed on the Ukrainian border ready to move at a few hours notice, the heightening war of words between Moscow and Kiev raises a genuine prospect of conflict. If Russia requires a pretext to move into eastern Ukraine, then many of the elements of that narrative are already in place. But what of the Russian militarys capabilities? What can be deduced from what we have seen so far of Russian operations in Crimea? Keir Giles, director of the Conflict Studies Research Centre (CSRC), a group specialising in Russian military affairs, notes that this is a very different Russian army from that seen during the Georgia war of 2008. Despite the apparent easy victory in Georgia, serious deficiencies in Russias military performance were obvious. This was a post-Soviet army, not much changed from the 1980s, and designed for a very different form of combat, he says. Serious lessons were ...

During the early part of the expedition - leaving St Petersburg in August 1733 - he was accompanied by the young student Stepan Krasheninnikov. They travelled together through the Urals and western Siberia to Yeniseysk. He described the position of the Yenisey river as a boundary between Europe and Asia and participated in measuring the lowest temperature ever recorded at Yeniseysk. At the moment I am reading Buried Treasures of Chinese Turkestan by Albert von Le Coq. In the first decade of the twentieth century he travels from Berlin to St Petersburg to Moscow, and then, by train to Omsk. From Omsk he travels by river and then cart to the Chinese border. Another mountainous journey takes him to Urumqi (where I wished to go a couple of years ago) and then down to the Tarim Basin 300 feet below sealevel and Turfan. He is an excellent story teller, describing the wild life and the people in wonderful detail. There are cockroaches the size of a mans thumb that give off a sickening smell when crushed, poisonous spiders, and the Uyghur people and their Chinese overlords. Urumqi is a cruel place. He records and photographs the cage. It is a gruesome form of capital punishment. The head is placed in a wooden vice while the floor of the cage is slowly dropped. Von Le Coq is astounded that he comes across this cage in a busy street. The people pass by and continue to go about ...

Title: Estimation of doses received in a dry-contaminated residential area in the Bryansk region, Russia, since the Chernobyl accident. Author: K.G. Andersson, J. Roed. Reference: Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, Volume 85, Issues 2-3, 2006, Pages 228-240. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jenvrad.2004.08.019. Keywords: Radiation dose; Radiocaesium; Urban; Chernobyl; Preparedness; Dry deposition. Abstract: In nuclear preparedness, an essential requirement is the ability to adequately predict the likely consequences of a major accident situation. In this context it is very important to evaluate which contributions to dose are important, and which are not likely to have significance. As an example of this type of evaluation, a case study has been conducted to estimate the doses received over the first 17 years after the Chernobyl accident in a dry-contaminated residential area in the Bryansk region in Russia. Methodologies for estimation of doses received through nine different pathways, ...
