A new indole alkaloid, naucline (1) together with four known alkaloids, angustine (2), angustidine (3), nauclefine (4) and naucletine (5), were isolated from the bark of Nauclea officinalis. The structures of all isolated compounds were elucidated with various spectroscopic methods such as 1D- and 2D- NMR, IR, UV and LCMS-IT-TOF. In addition to that of alkaloid 1, the complete 13C-NMR data of naucletine (5) were also reported. Naucline (1) showed a moderate vasorelaxant activity (90% relaxation at 1 × 10−5 M) whereas, angustine (2), nauclefine (4), and naucletine (5) showed potent vasorelaxant activity (more than 90% relaxation at 1 × 10−5 M) on an isolated rat aorta.
This tree to 30 m tall was formerly placed in the genus Anthocephalus. The simple leaves are broadly lanceolate with an acute apex, rather than ovate to obovate leaf with a rounded apex as in Nauclea. The flowers are in a head to 55 mm diameter, the corolla is yellow to orange, style and stamens exserted, fragrant. The fleshy, orange fruit has short bristles; it is to 45 mm diameter.. ...

... L. H. Bailey Hortorium, 462 Mann Library, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 14853. - Phylogeny and character evolution in Hintonia (Rubiaceae) and related taxa. The systematic position of the genus Hintonia Bullock within Rubiaceae has been controversial. Cladistic analyses of the chloroplast ribulose biphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase large subunit (rbcL) DNA sequences including a wide range of taxa from within and outside Rubiaceae have been conducted. These studies suggest that Hintonia is related to genera belonging to the Portlandia group forming a monophyletic clade that also includes members of the Chiococceae and Catesbaeae tribes in addition to Exostema (Pers.) Humb. & Bompl. Previous classifications do not entirely reflect the relationships suggested by the rbcL analyses. A combined analysis including rbcL and morphology provides the basis for the interpretation of the evolution of characters traditionally used in the taxonomy of the family. These characters include ...

INTRODUCTION. Plant populations can be described in terms of age, size and shape of its individuals and genetic structure (Harper and White 1974). Differences in size can be caused by factors such as age, genetic variability, resources heterogeneity, competition, effect of herbivore, parasites or pathogens and disturbance (Weiner and Solbrig 1984, Coomes et al. 2003, Muller-Landau et al. 2006). If size structure is related to the age of individuals, it gives information on the current regenerating capacity, past disturbances (Knowles and Grant 1983, Agren and Zackrisson 1990) and future expected occurrences (Odum 2001).. Light quantity and quality are strong factors determining plant growth and population structure in plant communities (Franklin 2003, Falster and Westoby 2005, Poorter et al. 2006). Irradiance can fluctuate from 1-2% of light at the forest floor to 100% above the canopy (Poorter et al. 2006). To take most advantage of the light available, species partition access to light through ...
The genera Gomphocalyx and Phylohydrax (Rubiaceae) have been invariably placed in the tribe Spermacoceae s.s. based on the uni-ovulate ovary locules and pluri-aperturate pollen grains. Sequence data from the rps16 intron and the rbcL gene here presented exclude Gomphocalyx and Phylohydrax from Spermacoceae s.s. The two genera are closely related and their nearest relatives are found among members of the former tribe Hedyotideae. This position may be surprising at first, because the growth form of Phylohydrax is similar to some observed in Spermacoceae s.s. A detailed survey of morphological and anatomical characters shows, however, that the character states of the two genera are largely consistent with the here-proposed position in Hedyotideae. The creeping growth form, the uni-ovulate ovaries and the pluri-colporate pollen grains of Gomphocalyx and Phylohydrax are the result of convergence between this pair of genera and Spermacoceae s.s. The taxonomic position of Lathraeocarpa, sometimes ...

The rhizome of Hydnophytum formicarum Jack., a medicinal plant known in Thai as Hua-Roi-Roo, has been used in Thai traditional herbal medicine for treatment of cancer. We assessed the ability of its ethanolic and phenolic-rich extracts and its major phenolic compound, sinapinic acid, possessing histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitory activity to inhibit proliferation of 5 human cancer cell lines. HeLa cells were used to study HDAC inhibitory activity of the extracts, sinapinic acid, and a well-known HDAC inhibitor sodium butyrate. Five human cancer cell lines and one non-cancer cell line were used to study antiproliferative activities of the plant extracts, sinapinic acid and sodium butyrate, comparatively. Results indicated that ethanolic and phenolic-rich extracts of H. formicarum Jack. rhizome possessed both antiproliferative activity and HDAC inhibitory activity in HeLa cells. Sinapinic acid, despite its lower HDAC inhibitory activity than the well-known HDAC inhibitor sodium butyrate, inhibited the

FADOGIA AGRESTIS P.E: INCREASES THE AMOUNT OF TESTICULAR CHOLESTEROL Increases the amount of testicular Cholesterol and also stimulates Leutinizing Hormone. "Fadogia Agrestis" has been used in traditional medicine for years in Nigeria to treat erectile dysfunction and lack of sex drive. Recently, a new study published in the Asian Journal of Andrology examined Fadogia Agrestis, and determined that it worked by dramatically increasing your testosterone levels. But, unlike anabolic steroids, Fadogia Agrestis wont provide an unnatural boost in testosterone levels that competes with your own testosterone production, instead, it actually elevates your testosterone level naturally by first elevating your Luteinizing Hormone (LH). As I mentioned earlier, in the male body, LH is the hormone which signals the release of Testosterone and once LH levels are elevated, Testosterone levels soon increase as well.Fadogia Agrestis, at a dose of 18mgs/kg were shown to provide a 200% increase in testosterone!

The results of this study are consistent with our prediction that village weavers have a preference for hexose over sucrose sugar when offered solutions as dilute as those found in plants adapted for pollination by these birds (Fig. 1). A preference for hexose sugars is consistent with most of the previous studies on occasional nectarivores, except that tests on most of these species were conducted with high or intermediate concentration solutions, and most did not use equicaloric solutions (Martínez del Rio et al., 1989; Malcarney et al., 1994; Franke et al., 1997; Lane, 1997). At high concentrations (20% and 25% SE) village weavers showed no sugar preference (Fig. 1). At 15% [which is at the lower end of the range for nectar concentration in specialist-pollinated flowers (Johnson and Nicolson, 2008), and at low concentrations of 5% and 10% [typical of plants pollinated by generalist avian nectarivores (Johnson and Nicolson, 2008)], village weavers preferred hexose nectar solutions (Fig. 1). ...
