Proline biosynthesis in plants stimulates the pentose phosphate pathway which results in an increasing carbon flux through the shikimate pathway. Shikimate pathway supplies carbon structures for many secondary metabolic pathways in plants. Chorismate, which is the end product of the shikimate pathway, becomes the branch point for the synthesis of phenylpropanoid and anthraquinones (AQs) in Rubia tinctorum secondary metabolism. We tested the effect of proline addition in plant suspension cultures of R. tinctorum in order to study the competition between the two above mentioned secondary metabolic pathways. Suspension cultures were treated with proline at different concentrations 0.25, 5 and 25 mM. Low proline level (0.25mM) produced an increase on AQs (50%) while high levels of proline ( 5 and 25 mM) showed a significant decrease on AQs accumulation ( 35 % an 50 %) and an increase in phenolics concentration. The increase on phenolic acids content was preceded by an induction on PAL activity. ...

Glutamate, the major excitatory neurotransmitter of CNS acts as a neurotoxin at higher concentrations. Prolonged activation of glutamate receptors results in progressive neuronal damage by aggravating calcium influx, inducing mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress. Excitotoxic cell death is associated with the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative disorders such as trauma, brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases. The current study was designed to investigate the neuroprotective and neuroregenerative potential of Tinospora cordifolia against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity using primary cerebellar neuronal cultures as a model system. Monosodium salt of glutamate was used to induce neurotoxic injury in primary cerebellar neurons. Four extracts including Hexane extract, Chloroform extract, Ethyl acetate, and Butanol extract were obtained from fractionation of previously reported aqueous ethanolic extract of T. cordifolia and tested for neuroprotective activity. Out of the four fractions,

Ayurveda remains a prominent part of modern Indian medicine, with designated schools that instruct students in applications of Ayurveda healing techniques. Ayurveda advocates a whole mind/whole body approach regarding the treatment of physical ailments; yoga and meditation are also components of the holistic philosophy that is Ayurveda.. Sida cordifolia is not of the same botanical family as the well-known medicinal herbs ephedra or the North American variant Mormon tea, but Sida cordifolia shares a common medicinal component with each: the ...

Everyone, me included, goes gaga when we sees red velvet cakes. Ive book-marked a few recipes to try baking them myself. But after some reading up about them, I realized that in order to attain that vibrant pretty red color, I have to add in about half bottle (about 1-2oz) of the red colorant. Whoa!!? Having worked with food colorant before, I know where they come from. The natural ones cost a bomb. Most of them are artificially made and theres a danger to them. Some kids get anaphylactic shock eating food that contains them. Since my cakes are gonna be shared with friends and with my lil one, I didnt want to add in the red colorant. Then I continued searching until I come across this recipe, which contains the ingredients I wanted, natural colorant - beetroot! and I also wanted a recipe that uses oil instead of butter (to give it the light texture) but still uses buttermilk. And Im absolutely pleased with this. Its super light and moist, and I couldnt taste the beet (I was afraid that ...
