INTRODUCTION. Rosmarinus officinalis (Lamiaceae), rosemary, is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean region but is widely distributed in many parts of the world, including Brazil (Nissen et al., 2000). Among the species of the genus Rosmarinus that grow wild in Brazil, R. officinalis L. is economically important because the leaves are commonly used as a condiment for flavoring food and as a source of antioxidant compounds employed in food preservation (Albuquerque et al., 2007).. R. officinalis is widely used in Brazilian folk medicine as a sedative, antispasmodic, cardiotonic, for treating menstrual disturbances, cough, influenza, colic, fever, pain, flatulence, stomach ache, and intestinal, hepatic and renal problems. This herb is also used as a medicine in the treatment of respiratory inflammatory diseases, such as bronchial asthma (Nissen et al., 2000). Some studies have reported a variety of pharmacological activities of R. officinalis extract, such as hepatoprotection (Sotelo et ...
Hair care: Rosemary oil and rosemary teas are widely used for hair care in shampoos and lotions. Regular use of rosemary oil helps to stimulate follicles, making hair grow longer and stronger. It is also believed that rosemary oil slows down premature hair loss and graying of the hair. Therefore, it is an excellent tonic for bald people or those who are beginning to show signs on male pattern baldness.. Rosemary essential oil is also beneficial for dry and flaky scalps. Regular massaging of the scalp with rosemary oil nourishes the scalp and removes dandruff. Furthermore, it is often mixed with tea tree oil and basil oil to alternately treat scalp problems. For many years, rosemary has been combined with olive oil as a way to darken and strengthen hair by using hot oil treatments.. Mouth care: Rosemary essential oil is a disinfectant and is often used as a mouth wash. It also helps in removing bad breath. By removing oral bacteria, rosemary essential oil can prevent gingivitis, cavities, plaque ...

The considerable therapeutical problems of persistent infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacterial strains constitute a continuing need to find effective antimicrobial agents. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the activities of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) essential oils against multidrug- resistant clinical strains of Escherichia coli. A detailed analysis was performed of the resistance of the drug to the strains and their sensitivity to the tested oils. The antibacterial activity of the oils was tested against standard strain Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 as well as 60 other clinical strains of Escherichia coli. The clinical strains were obtained from patients with infections of the respiratory tract, abdominal cavity, urinary tract, skin and from hospital equipment. The inhibition of microbial growth by both essential oils, presented as MIC values, were determined by agar dilution. Susceptibility testing to antibiotics was carried out using disc

The leaves of Rosmarinus officinalis harvested from three different locations of Turkey were extracted by both methanolic and supercritical CO(2) extraction. Subsequently, six extracts and the active compounds, carnosic acid, and rosmarinic acid were applied to various human cancer cell lines including NCI-H82 (human, small cell lung, carcinoma), DU-145 (human, prostate, carcinoma), Hep-3B (human, black, liver, carcinoma, hepatocellular), K-562 (human chronic myeloid leukemia), MCF-7 (human, breast, adenocarcinoma), PC-3 (human, prostate, adenocarcinoma) and MDA-MB-231 (human, breast, adenocarcinoma) by MTT assay. Supercritical CO(2) extracts had superior antiproliferative effect compared to the soxhlet extracts. Although the extracts exhibited various cytotoxic effects against different cell lines, comparatively low IC(50) values ranging between 12.50 and 47.55 microg/ml were attained against K-562, being the most sensitive cell line. Moreover, carnosic acid caused the lowest cell viability ...

Medieval topiary was relatively simple and non-representational. Woody plants were trained to standards topped by balls, or to a characteristically medieval form known as an estrade, in which the plant was grown in tiers. Although these are rarely represented before 1400, many fifteenth-century artworks show estrades and other simple, geometric forms growing both in pots and in garden beds. The more ornate representational topiary known to the Romans was revived in Renaissance Italy; the Rucellai garden in Florence, created in the second half of the fifteenth century, included animals and human figures, as well as topiary temples and urns.. The practice of artfully clipping and training woody plants into formal or fanciful shapes can be traced back to imperial Rome and the Natural History of Pliny the Elder, who attributes the relatively recent invention of nemora tonsilia or "barbered groves" to one Gaius Matius, a Roman knight and a friend of the Emperor Augustus (John Boardman, The Oxford ...

Salvage logging is the commonest post-fire emergency action, but has unclear ecological effects. In the Mediterranean Basin, drought periods and fire regimes are changing and forest management should be adapted. In summer 2009, a mid-high severity fire burned 968 ha of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) forest in southeast Spain, which was submitted to salvage logging six months later. In spring 2010, plots were set in untreated and logged areas to monitor the recruitment and survival of the main tree species and three companion species: Stipa tenacissima L. (resprouter), Cistus clusii Dunal and Rosmarinus officinalis L. (obligate seeders). We evaluated responses to different scenarios in relation to intensification of summer droughts and forest management to obtain differences in water stress, growth, and gas exchange to cope with summer drought. Drought was induced by using rain-exclusion shelters and recorded ecophysiological characteristics were obtained with a portable gas exchange system. The

Rosemary essential oil has been used as an anti-oxidant for quite some time - we can see this in the use of ROE or rosemary oleoresin extract (I think thats what that stands for - Ive seen a few interpretations). There are countless studies on this topic, but Ill quote a few here. This one, from the awesomely named journal Meat Science, found that "The effect of the addition of rosemary essential oil on the oxidative stability of frankfurters depended on the level of added essential oil and the characteristic of the frankfurter. The rosemary essential oil successfully inhibited the development of lipid and protein oxidation in IF with that antioxidant effect being more intense at higher concentrations of essential oil." (Read the entire study to see the effects on white pigs, which werent so great. IF stands for Iberian pigs.) This study concluded that "Strong inhibition of LP [lipid peroxidation] in both systems of induction was especially observed for the essential oil of rosemary." This ...
Rosmarinus means "dew of the sea," where this Mediterranean herb loves to grow. Rosemary delights the late winter with prolific blooms. Rosemary was the main ingredient in "Hungary Water" and the first cologne. The old French name incensier came from rosemarys celebrated history as church incense. Until the 20th century, the fragrant leaves were burned to purify French hospitals. Commoners burned rosemary instead of frankincense; it symbolized both love and death at funerals ...

With the many different essential oils to choose from and the many brands, both in our stores and over the internet, choosing a high-quality essential oil can seem a daunting task. As a consumer, what should you look for to help guide your choice?. The first thing to look for to determine essential oil authenticity is that each oil is identified with the plants scientific or botanical name, and in appropriate cases, the chemotype. A chemotype is when the same plant, e.g. rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), will have a different chemical profile based on where it is grown. Only some plants have chemotypes. Country of plant origin, extraction process used, and either a distillation or expiration date are also important.. Any essential oil business that cares about selling only pure essential oils will have their oils tested with at least two tests, usually run simultaneously, the gas chromatography and mass spectrometry tests, or GC/MS. Responsible essential oil vendors will run these tests on ...
