Under normal conditions, the immune system protects the human body from foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms. The immune system also plays an important role in clearing up skin inflammation. However, in certain inflammatory skin disorders such as rosacea, immune cells can do more harm than good. In rosacea, chronic facial flushing and inflammation cause the immune system to become over-reactive. The immune system sends gobs of normal immune cells into the facial skin. These normal immune cells then set up camp around facial blood vessels, releasing inflammatory substances that trigger dilation, weaken blood vessel walls, and cause inflammatory papules. It is important for rosacea sufferers and general physicians to understand that rosacea is not an auto-immune disease. The immune system does not produce antibodies or specifically attack the facial skin cells or blood vessels. The average rosacea sufferer has a perfectly healthy immune system. I. ...

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the skin of the face and the eyes. The aetiology of rosacea is not clearly established but increasing evidence suggests a potential role for bacteria in the induction of the condition. A role for Bacillus oleronius, originally isolated from within a Demodex folliculorum mite, in the aetiology of the condition has been suggested. The aim of the study was to determine whether a correlation existed between the level of sebum and the density of D. folliculorum in the skin of erythematotelangiectatic rosacea patients, and the reactivity of these patients sera to proteins of B. oleronius. Serum reactivity to the 62 and 83 kDa B. oleronius proteins was found in 82.6% (62/75) of the rosacea patients and in 26.9% (14/52) of controls (P50.0016). In the group of rosacea patients whose sera reacted to B. oleronius proteins, the level of sebum was statistically lower than in controls (P50.01). Symptoms vary from patient to patient but can range from flushing, facial redness and pimples to swelling and skin thickening, visible blood vessels and raised patches. The early signs of rosacea are often overlooked because they are easily mistaken for something else and tend to come and go, stated Dr. John Wolf, chairman of dermatology at Baylor University. According to the Rosacea Society, part of managing the disorder is use of appropriate skin care for cleansing and moisturizing and effective application of makeup to reduce the signs of redness. Cleansers The society recommends using a non-soap, fragrance free cleanser, washing with the fingertips and rinsing with lukewarm water. Winter is coming - and that is not good news for people with rosacea. The things many of us love about the season -- cold weather, hot drinks, and outdoor exercise - can lead to the redness, bumps, and skin irritation that are hallmarks of their condition.. Those with rosacea are often fair skinned, over 30 years old, and tend to blush easily. Over time, these individuals may develop small blood vessels on their cheeks, chin, forehead and nose that do not serve and explicit purpose. These small blood vessels are called telangiectasias and expand due to triggers such as cold weather, hot drinks, exercise, sun exposure, and stress. While not always visible to the naked eye, they contribute to the overall red face appearance that is common with rosacea.. "While many people think rosacea is just a red face, there are actually several subtypes and identifying which type a patient has can help create a targeted treatment plan," says Adam Tinklepaugh, MD, dermatologist and director of the University of ...

Ever since I developed rosacea and seb derm, I have slowly but surely lost a good part of my eyebrows. Mine got thinner and thinner over the years, and when I clean my eyebrows thoroughly with a cotton pad, I always see loose hairs from the eyebrow coming off with it. But its not as if they fall out with the slightest touch. I got my thyroid tested several times, but it is fine and the eyebrow loss is not related to this. In fact, they found nothing else in blood tests to explain it, and blame it merely on the rosacea and seb derm (and possibly to some other auto immune issues I have). Right now the outer parts of my brows are almost invisible. There are hairs there, but not enough to make the brow look normal and continuing. I also lost a great amount of eye lashes. I don´t use any make up normally, but the past years I really started to get annoyed (and sad) with the bloated, red cheeks (from rosacea and medication) and the sickly looking bare eyes and half decent eyebrows. Mascara makes me ...

Rosacea is one of the most stubborn skin conditions because theres no cure and it involves a lot of trial and error to find the right products and treatments to manage it. But because it affects nearly 14 million people in the U.S. alone, dermatologists are always looking for possible cures and answers to get rid of rosacea once and for all.. Typical in-office treatments for rosacea include lasers and light-based procedures, but as Refinery29 reports, neuromodulators (think Botox Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin) are now being added to the list of options for reducing frustrating flare-ups (off-label). Tiny amounts of the neuromodulators can be injected into superficial layers of skin, which may help hinder the blood vessels ability to dilate (a cause of redness and inflammation).
