PURPOSE To retrospectively determine whether baseline nodule characteristics at 3-month and 1-year volume doubling time (VDT) are predictive for lung cancer in solid indeterminate noncalcified nodules (NCNs) detected at baseline computed tomographic (CT) screening. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study, conducted between April 2004 and May 2006, was institutional review board approved. Patient consent was waived for this retrospective evaluation. NCNs between 5 and 10 mm in diameter (n = 891) were evaluated at 3 months and 1 year to assess growth (VDT | 400 days). Baseline assessments were related to growth at 3 months and 1 year by using chi(2) and Mann-Whitney U tests. Baseline assessments and growth were related to the presence of malignancy by using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Because of the important role of auxins in lateral root and nodule formation, auxin profiles were examined in roots and nodules of the actinorhizal species Datisca glomerata and the model legume Medicago truncatula. In this study, the role of the Nod factor receptors NOD FACTOR PERCEPTION (NFP) and LYSIN MOTIF RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE3 (LYK3) in establishing the symbiotic interface in root nodules was investigated. Delaying nodule senescence could be a way of increasing the yield of soybean therefore determination of the role of cysteine protease in soybean is of vital importance. In this study, soybean plants were grown under controlled temperature and light conditions. Leaves and root crown nodules were collected at 4, 6, 10, 12 and 16 weeks of age. A time-course study examining the current photosynthate allocation of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) cv. Williams was conducted in relation to nodule initiation. Whole shoots were exposed to ^,14,CO_2 for 120 min and the distribution of radioactivity in each organ was determined. During the early stages of nodule formation (i.e. 4, 6 and 8 days after inoculation) the ^,14,C distribution to the inoculated roots did not increase when compared with uninoculated control roots. In addition, the ^,14,C respired by underground parts was similar in both the inoculated and the control roots. The right upper lobe nodule sounds most suspicious and may require some sort of biopsy to be sure. Comparison with any older imaging studies might add more information. Nitrogen-fixing peanut root nodules have oleosomes (lipid bodies) in infected and uninfected cells. The oleosomes were characterized and compared with their counterparts in the seed tissue. Measurements made from scanning electron micrographs of isolated oleosomes revealed that eighty percent of the nodule oleosomes were of smaller size (0.16-1.0 µm in diameter [dia.]) while in the seeds the larger size (1.0-5.5 µm dia.) dominated. The larger oleosomes in the nodules were exclusively found in the uninfected three layers of cortical cells adjacent to the infected zone. Morphometric analyses have shown significantly higher numbers of oleosomes covering about 8% of the infected cell area in immature (white) nodules, whereas the mature/old (pink) nodules had lesser numbers occupying about 4-5% of the cell area. After reading whatever I could find on the freeze-thaw method (too many TFF topics to cite here), I started doing the following. First, I submerged the nodules in water (in 6 cm deep trays, fully submerging the nodules, which were placed next to each other, not stacking them) for one week (I was on vacation). Subsequently, I put the trays in freezer until frozen solid (1 day). I repeated these steps (duration 1 day each) until nodules popped open/could be opened by hand. Most of my nodules have opened by now (two to go still) and this is what I found: Some of the nodules seem to contain bits (e.g. the ones on lower right - any ID suggestions?), but most are empty, at least to my untrained eye (have zero previous experience with Mazon Creek material).
