The years 2002 to 2004 mark the bicentenaries of the discoveries of rhodium, palladium, iridium and osmium. Two remarkable people were responsible for their discoveries - William Hyde Wollaston (1766-1828) the discoverer of rhodium and palladium, and his friend Smithson Tennant (1761-1815) the discoverer of iridium and osmium. This and a subsequent paper will seek to retell the stories of their discoveries, and to indicate the growing usefulness of the metals throughout the nineteenth century to their importance today. In this first part we will discuss Wollaston and his discoveries. Part II, to be published in a later issue, will complete the story with Tennants discoveries of the more intractable elements iridium and osmium.

The problem with (NHC)M-catalysed hydrogenations is the tendency of NHC to suffer a reductive elimination of the imidazolium salt [NHC-H]+, but bis-NHC ligands are expected to be resistant to this process. The efficiency of the synthesized gold, palladium and rhodium complexes in the asymmetric hydrogenation of several (E)-diethyl 2-R-succinates was investigated, and all complexes showed significant activities. In the hydrogenation of (E)-diethyl 2-benzylidenesuccinate, up to 99 per cent ee was obtained with the rhodium catalyst, while palladium and gold complexes yielded activities and selectivities comparable to those obtained with diphosphine ligands. It is generally believed now that oxidative addition and reductive elimination of alkanes to transition metal centers involve complexes of intact alkanes (sigma complexes") as intermediates, and considerable effect is widely going into trying to discern their properties and to observe them directly. We are investigating their intramolecular reactivity properties with respect to their barriers for oxidative addition, reductive elimination, migration of the metal about the intact alkane, and alkane dissociation, and competition for re-coordination of different hydrocarbons to the rhodium center. All of these processes must be central to any catalytic reaction for the modification or functionalization of alkanes mediated by these metals. Heres how I count its electrons: rhodium is a group 9 element so it has 2s electrons and 7d electrons which means it has 9 out of 18 valence electrons to begin with. The 2 CO ligands add an extra 4 electrons, bringing the total to 13. Im a bit confused about how the iodide ligands work, do they also donate 2 electrons each? If so, that brings the electron count to 17. The ion has a charge of -1, bringing the total electron count to 18. How can this be a coordinatively unsaturated complex? If you add 2 more ligands to it then you end up with an electron count of 22 ...
