In 1956, the Rhode Island Legislature passed two regulations. The first prevented both in and out-of-state manufacturers, wholesalers, and shippers from "advertising in any manner whatsoever" the price of any alcoholic beverage offered for sale in Rhode Island. The second prevented Rhode Island news media from "mak[ing] reference to the price of any alcoholic beverages" under any circumstances.[1] In 1985, a liquormart brought a suit against the liquor control commissioner, arguing, among other things, that the first regulation, which prevented the liquormart from advertising its prices, was unconstitutional. The Rhode Island Supreme Court, however, held that the regulation did not violate the First Amendment, the Commerce Clause, the Equal Protection Clause, or the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.[2] In the same year, the Rhode Island Liquor Stores Association filed a suit that attempted to enjoin a local Rhode Island newspaper, The Call, from advertising prices of liquor outside of the state. Primers were used to amplify a 561-bp region of the 16S rRNA gene of Ehrlichia phagocytophila from Ixodes scapularis ticks and small mammals collected in Rhode Island and Connecticut. DNA sequences for all 50 E. phagocytophila-positive samples collected from 1996 through 1998 in southwestern Connecticut were identical to the sequence reported for E. phagocytophila DNA from confirmed human cases. In contrast, the sequences from 92 of 123 E. phagocytophila-positive Rhode Island samples collected from 1996 through 1999 included several variants differing by 1-2 nucleotides from that in the agent infecting humans. While 11.9% of 67 E. phagocytophila-positive ticks collected during 1997 in Rhode Island harbored ehrlichiae with sequences identical to that of the human agent, 79.1% had a variant sequence not previously described. The low incidence of human ehrlichiosis in Rhode Island may in part result from interference by these variant ehrlichiae with maintenance and transmission of the true agent of human

Ruptured aortic aneurysms are usually treated with emergent surgery. However, if detected electively prior to rupture, often AAAs can be treated with a new minimally invasive treatment, Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). With EVAR, a small incision is made in a leg artery, and a stent-graft introduced into the aorta using catheters and fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance. Often, people who undergo this treatment can be discharged from the hospital the following day and back to full activity within a week.. The Interventional Radiologists at Rhode Island Medical Imaging were the first in Rhode Island to offer EVAR. If you are found to have an AAA and would like consideration for EVAR, please contact us to schedule a consultation at (401)-421-1924. ...

The Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island (WIH) has agreed to pay $150,000 to resolve allegations that it failed to protect the personal information and protected health information (PHI) of more than 12,000 patients in Massachusetts two years ago.. The consent judgment, approved by Suffolk Superior Court Judge Carol Ball, resulted from a data breach reported to the Attorney Generals (AG) Office in November 2012 that included patients names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, dates of exams, physicians names, and ultrasound images. The ruling was announced by Massachusetts AG Martha Coakley last week.. In April 2012, WIH realized that it was missing 19 unencrypted back-up tapes from two of its prenatal diagnostic centers, one located in Providence, Rhode Island and the other located in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The back-up tapes contained the personal information and PHI of 12,127 Massachusetts residents.. In the summer of 2011, these back-up tapes were supposed to be sent to a ...
John Nicholas Brown The Brown family has played too conspicuous and important a part in the life of Rhode Island from the very founding of the colony to the present day to require introduction to the readers of the history of the State. Chad Brown. (I) Rev. Chad Brown, immigrant ancestor and founder of the family, came from England in the ship Martin, which arrived in Boston, in the Massachusetts Colony, in July, 1638. He brought with him his wife Elizabeth, son John, then eight years old, and perhaps younger children. A fellow passenger died on the voyage, and Chad Brown witnessed the will soon after his arrival. He did not remain long in the Massachusetts Colony, probably because of his religious views, but soon removed to Providence, where he became at once a leader and one of the most valued citizens of ...
