The present study found that damage to OFC, but not to other areas within PFC, resulted in impaired performance on a probabilistic reversal learning task. This is consistent with two previous neuropsychological studies that reported impaired performance of a complex, gambling-like reversal learning task after OFC damage (Berlin et al., 2004; Hornak et al., 2004). The large cohort studied here allowed VLSM analysis to be applied to much of the PFC. We were able to confirm a regionally specific contribution of OFC, with the effect mainly driven by voxels in bilateral posteromedial OFC and to a lesser extent right lateral OFC, and to reject a critical role for other regions within PFC, notably including dACC (at least of the same effect size and within the anatomical constraints of our sample) in flexible reinforcement learning in a probabilistic environment.. Contrary to the performance of such patients on a simple, deterministic reversal learning task (Fellows and Farah, 2003), the impairment of ...

Personality traits of impulsivity will be measured with the Barrett Impulsiveness Scale and the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised. Behavioral components of impulsivity will be tested through delay and probability discounting tasks. Finally, measures of frontotemporal functioning are also included in a neuropsychology and neurocognitive battery. Recent studies have shown that these areas of the brain function differently in pathological gamblers; thus, the following neuropsychology/neurocognitive tests have been included: Attention/Information Processing Speed (via Simple Reaction Time Task and Continuous Performance Task), Episodic Memory (via Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised and Brief Visuospatial Memory Test), Executive/Frontal Lobe Measures (via Wechsler Memory Scale-III, Choice Reaction Time Task, Working Memory Task (N-back), Probabilistic Reversal Learning Task, and Stop-Signal Task). Between group comparisons on this battery of impulsivity tests will be made to clarify which ...

Plasma was separated within 15 min of blood collection and centrifuged for 10 min at 3,500 revolutions per min. Plasma samples were immediately stored at −20°C until analysis. For the construction of the calibration curve human control plasma was spiked with adequate volumes of alfentanil dissolved in 50:50 methanol/water to give a concentration range of 0-5,000 ng/ml. For the analysis, 50 μl plasma samples, standards, blanks, and quality controls were transferred into 1 ml tubes. Proteins were precipitated with 150 μl acetonitrile, which contained 1,000 ng/ml propranolol (internal standard). The tubes were vortexed for 30 s and centrifuged for 5 min at 3,000 revolutions per min. The supernatant was transferred to a 96-well plate for analysis. Aliquots (10 μl) were injected by a Shimadzu SIL-5000 auto sampler (Columbia, MD) on an Atlantis T3 column (4.6 × 50 mm, 5 μm particle size; Milford, MA), which was used for separation of the analytes from the plasma components. The analytes were ...
BACKGROUND. The histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor vorinostat (VOR) can increase HIV RNA expression in vivo within resting CD4+ T cells of aviremic HIV+ individuals. However, while studies of VOR or other HDAC inhibitors have reported reversal of latency, none has demonstrated clearance of latent infection. We sought to identify the optimal dosing of VOR for effective serial reversal of HIV latency. METHODS. In a study of 16 HIV-infected, aviremic individuals, we measured resting CD4+ T cell-associated HIV RNA ex vivo and in vivo following a single exposure to VOR, and then in vivo after a pair of doses separated by 48 or 72 hours, and finally following a series of 10 doses given at 72-hour intervals. RESULTS. Serial VOR exposures separated by 72 hours most often resulted in an increase in cell-associated HIV RNA within circulating resting CD4+ T cells. VOR was well tolerated by all participants. However, despite serial reversal of latency over 1 month of VOR dosing, we did not observe a ...

As has been appreciated from previous studies, ASP lesions of OFC (Butter, 1969; Iversen and Mishkin, 1970; Meunier et al., 1997; Izquierdo et al., 2004), as well as lesions of rhinal cortex, excitotoxic lesions of the hippocampus, and unilateral lesions of OFC and the amygdala within one hemisphere (Murray et al., 1998; Izquierdo et al., 2004) all produce significant impairments in reversal learning. Prior studies testing for visual perceptual deficits in monkeys with rhinal cortex lesions (Gaffan and Murray, 1992; Meunier et al., 1993) suggest that visual perceptual abilities are not the primary cause of the impairments in reversal learning for monkeys in this lesion cluster. Here, we also show these deficits are not due to an inability of the animals to develop a learning set and are instead attributable to a need for greater evidence in favor of a reversal before the animals switched their behavior.. In contrast to the cluster with deficits relative to controls, we also identified a cluster ...

The main aging theories of the past were never proved wrong, but they individually never proved sufficient to explain aging either.
Polymorphisms in the gene encoding the serotonin synthesis enzyme Tph2 have been identified in mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, major depression, autism, schizophrenia, and ADHD. Deficits in cognitive flexibility and perseverative behaviors are shared common symptoms in these disorders. However, little is known about the impact of Tph2 gene variants on cognition. Mice expressing a human TPH2 variant (Tph2-KI) were used to investigate cognitive consequences of TPH2 loss of function and pharmacological treatments. We applied a recently developed behavioral assay, the automated H-maze, to study cognitive functions in Tph2-KI mice. This assay involves the consecutive discovery of three different rules: a delayed alternation task, a non-alternation task, and a delayed reversal task. Possible contribution of locomotion, reward, and sensory perception were also investigated. The expression of loss-of-function mutant Tph2 in mice was associated with impairments in reversal learning and ...
I think this is interesting on Reversal matters because it "measures" the reversal (see inside the text): " The findings, using ultrasound, showed that after two years, there was a five percent decrease in average carotid vessel-wall volume and a one percent decrease in carotid artery thickness." Please note that it just mentions different diets (plant based food and of course no processed food), but other diets as well (I am sorry for not just Vegan diet in the study). Please also note that appears that they did not take in consideration exercise, that alone it could have added other benefits, like enlarging arteries and vassels, plus activation of collaterals in the heart.. An approaching predator and self-motion toward an object can generate similar looming patterns on the retina, but these situations demand different rapid responses. How central circuits flexibly process visual cues to activate appropriate, fast motor pathways remains unclear. Here we identify two descending neuron (DN) types that control landing and contribute to visuomotor flexibility in Drosophila. For each, silencing impairs visually evoked landing, activation drives landing, and spike rate determines leg extension amplitude. Critically, visual responses of both DNs are severely attenuated during non-flight periods, effectively decoupling visual stimuli from the landing motor pathway when landing is inappropriate. The flight-dependence mechanism differs between DN types. Octopamine exposure mimics flight effects in one, whereas the other probably receives neuronal feedback from flight motor circuits. Thus, this sensorimotor flexibility arises from distinct mechanisms for gating ...
Comparative cognition has been an active field for over 100 years. The field was an active interest of George Romanes as well as past luminaries in ethology and experimental psychology such as C. Lloyd Morgan, Tolman and Thorndike. Early studies focussed on mammals and non-human primates but rapidly expanded to include other vertebrate and invertebrate species, including birds, fish, flies, ants, bees, and spiders. The advent of behavioural ecology reinforced ethologys tradition of elegant field studies designed to explore memory for food caches, navigation, communication, tool use, identification of conspecifics, and many other matters. In the laboratory, these animals now push levers for food, navigate mazes, or respond to images on computer screens in discrimination, attention, memory and counting experiments. For example, zebrafish have been shown to perform on tasks of executive function, bumblebees have been shown to perform reversal learning and matching to sample and paper wasps have shown
A study of older adults at risk of late-onset Alzheimers disease found that those who consumed more omega-3 fatty acids did better than their peers on tests of cognitive flexibility - the ability to efficiently switch between tasks - and had a bigger anterior cingulate cortex, a brain region known to contribute to cognitive flexibility.. ...
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is one of the most studied and popular approaches in modern "third wave" CBT. A distinguishing feature of ACT is the empirical strength and breadth of application of its underlying "psychological flexibility model." That model, and the processes it focuses on, makes it possible to explore bits and pieces of ACT for particular clients in a coherent way, without having to overturn the way you currently practice.. Psychological inflexibility is characterized by avoiding experiences, taking thoughts literally, buying into self-stories, and becoming entangled in the conceptualized past or future, while missing the opportunity to build larger patterns of meaningful action. These inflexibility processes are driven by positive human motives - yearning for belonging, feeling, competence, self-direction, orientation, and coherence - but they all provide only short-term benefits, thwarting their long-term achievement. Research suggest that the six primary psychological ...
When Oxfordshire Cotswolds native Dr. Barry Groves and his wife Monica decided to start on a low-carb, high-fat diet beginning in 1962, all of his friends and family thought he was crazy. But when this nutritional scientist Ph.D. lost weight and greatly improved his health by eating supposedly-forbidden foods like butter, full fat meats and cheeses and lard while eschewing blood sugar-spiking carbage foods like bread, pasta and rice, Dr. Groves was the one who had the last laugh. It allowed him to live a long and healthy robust life with over a half century of enjoyable low-carb, high-fat living as one of the UKs strongest advocates for this healthy lifestyle change. Dr. Groves passed away last night, April 29, 2013 at the age of 77 ...
Neuromodulators such as monoamines and peptides play important roles in activating and reconfiguring neural networks to allow behavioral flexibility. While the net effects of a neuromodulator change the network in a particular direction, careful studies of modulatory effects reveal multiple cases where a neuromodulator will activate functionally opposing mechanismson a single neuron or synapse. This review gives examples of such opposing actions, focusing on the lobster pyloric network, and discusses their possible functional significance. One important action of opposing modulatory actions may be to stabilize the modulated state of the network, and to prevent it from being overmodulated and becoming non-functional.
I did some training in neuro-linguistic programming years ago, and one of the things they emphasize is that generally, behavioral flexibility is key to being a healthy person. The instructor asked for participants to describe an area where they felt stuck. Over and over again, we (the participants) described "stuck" situations just like the false choices Carrie and all are describing - where wed say "well, I have to do (this), if I didnt, then Id have to do (that). In my case, it was that if I was angry with someone, I would either not argue (and be seething and resentful), or Id wind up yelling and screaming. Both left me feeling badly, and neither made the problem better, really ...
Heart-Rate Variability or HRV is the beat to beat changes in your heart rate, and is due to the synergistic action of the two branches of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) - the part of the nervous system that regulates most of the bodys internal functions. The sympathetic nerves act to accelerate heart rate, while the parasympathetic (vagus) nerves slow it down. The sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the ANS are continually interacting to maintain cardiovascular activity in its optimal range and to permit appropriate reactions to changing internal and external conditions.. Scientists and physicians consider HRV to be an important indicator of health and fitness. As a marker of physiological resilience and behavioral flexibility, it reflects our ability to adapt effectively to stress and environmental demands. A simple analogy helps to illustrate this point: just as the shifting stance of a tennis player about to receive a serve may facilitate swift adaptation, in healthy individuals ...
Hi Everyone, New to this forum and so glad I found it. I was really hoping you give me your "in the trenches" opinion of whether we are dealing with PANDAS/PANS and what a reoccurrence might look like. DD5 has always been a bit of a challenge in terms of characteristics she displayed (inflexibility, ridged, OCD tendencies, sensory issues, etc) but we always assumed it was just her personality. Last May we hit our breaking point in terms of being able to cope with her behaviours and routines and we sought the help of a child psychologist. Within the first session she said it sounds like she has a lot of OCD tendencies to which my husband and I were shocked and didnt really buy it. We just figured all this time she was just a very particular kid. Her routines at the time were around always needing to perform 5 perfect cartwheels in a row, playing a game when we would walk through the door where all had to pretend she was a little girl named Sarah and she was visiting our family etc. We also had a ...

CTDs and Tourette syndrome are neurobehavioral disorders that are characterized by a persistent pattern of motor and vocal tics. Tics are intermittent movements or sounds that occur repeatedly. They can be either brief, rapid, and darting movements or more purposeful movements, such as repetitively locking and unlocking a door. Vocal tics can be simple, as in sniffing or grunting, or more complex, such as complete words or phrases. Tic disorders can cause considerable distress in affected children, and can lead to social and academic impairment. If left untreated, CTDs can last into adulthood. The standard treatment for suppressing CTDs is medication; dopamine-blocking drugs are used most commonly. These medications, however, are associated with a range of adverse effects that can result in poor treatment compliance and premature treatment termination. Recent research suggests that HRT may be an effective, lower risk treatment for CTDs. HRT is a behavioral treatment based on increasing awareness ...
Currently available evidence suggests that the first line of treatment for trichotillomania is behavioral treatment and intervention. With treatment, symptoms can be managed and oftentimes eradicated. No medication has been approved yet for the treatment of trichotillomania. Drug therapy has largely been disappointing, though some studies have yielded encouraging results.. Habit reversal training, a type of behavioral treatment, is the primary psychotherapy for trichotillomania. In this treatment, you learn how to recognize situations where youre likely to pull hair and how to substitute other behaviors instead. For example, you might clench your fists for a period to "freeze" the urge, or redirect your hand from your hair to your ear, or another object, such as a stress ball.. If indicated, elements of other therapies may be added to habit reversal training, including:. ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Impact of anxiety on prefrontal cortex encoding of cognitive flexibility. AU - Park, Junchol. AU - Moghaddam, Bita. PY - 2017/3/14. Y1 - 2017/3/14. N2 - Anxiety often is studied as a stand-alone construct in laboratory models. But in the context of coping with real-life anxiety, its negative impacts extend beyond aversive feelings and involve disruptions in ongoing goal-directed behaviors and cognitive functioning. Critical examples of cognitive constructs affected by anxiety are cognitive flexibility and decision making. In particular, anxiety impedes the ability to shift flexibly between strategies in response to changes in task demands, as well as the ability to maintain a strategy in the presence of distractors. The brain region most critically involved in behavioral flexibility is the prefrontal cortex (PFC), but little is known about how anxiety impacts PFC encoding of internal and external events that are critical for flexible behavior. Here we review animal and human ...

The Lakers inflexibility on offense has been revealed, and the basic post passes and kick-out passes in response to double-team defense are not getting it done.. Nuggets coach George Karl said his team is executing well a plan to double-team Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol in different ways and in different times.. Karl said in contrast to the quick, hard traps of Bynum, the Nuggets are not coming as hard or consistently against Gasol - but they are tilting their defense toward him also.. "Were zoning it up pretty well against their three best players," Karl said. "There are different reads against all three of them.". Gasol said the Lakers foremost focus is going to be defensive improvement, but he suggested the Lakers will benefit in Game 7 Saturday night by not forcing the ball into the strong side of the offense. Instead, the Lakers hope to move the ball quickly to the other side of the court and attack before Denvers defensive traps can be established.. "Were getting a little ...
