Strict adherence to ART regimens is necessary for viral suppression and to avoid development of viral resistance, yet average ART adherence among HIV-positive individuals in North America is only 55%. Focused prevention efforts are key to reduce secondary HIV transmission to sexual and needle-sharing partners, yet many HIV patients do not receive counseling about these behaviors from their providers. Despite the global pandemic and a rising HIV incidence among some US populations, few health promotion interventions have integrated ART adherence with transmission risk reduction for people living with HIV. Most of the efficacious adherence or prevention interventions to date are not practical to scale up, as they require intense staff training and quality assurance and can be delivered to relatively few individuals at any one time.. The University of Gothenburg in Sweden is investigating several papers co-authored by biologist Suchitra Sumitran-Holgersson after they were challenged on PubPeer.. Sumitran-Holgersson already has one retraction under her belt - of a 2005 Blood paper, after another investigation concluded the results "cannot be considered reliable." Sumitran-Holgersson and her husband, co-author Jan Holgersson, did not sign the retraction notice. Both were based at the Karolinska Institutet (KI) at the time, but have since moved to the University of Gothenburg.. The paper has been cited three times, according to Thomson Scientifics Web of Knowledge.. The notice is the same for "Activation of Adenosine A2A Receptors Induces TrkB Translocation and Increases BDNF-Mediated Phospho-TrkB Localization in Lipid Rafts: Implications for Neuromodulation" by Natália Assaife-Lopes, Vasco C. Sousa, Daniela B. Pereira, Joaquim A. Ribeiro, Moses V. Chao, and Ana M. Sebastião, which appeared in 2010 and has been cited17 times.. The second-to-last author, Moses Chao, is the immediate past-president of the Society for Neuroscience, which publishes the Journal of Neuroscience. His Spring 2012 message to the SfN membership was about the need for change in scientific publishing. Both retraction notices are behind a paywall, so making them freely available would be a good start. Weve also had issues with the opacity of such notices in the journal, although these two do give some information.. Weve contacted Sebastião for comment, and will update with anything we hear ...

We present observations of quasi-phase matched parametric fluorescence in a periodically poled twin-hole silica fiber. The phase matching condition in the fiber enables the generation of a degenerate signal field in the fiber-optic communication band centered on 1556 nm. We performed coincidence measurements and a Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment to validate that the signal arises from photon pairs. A coincidence peak with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 4 using 43 mW of pump power and a Hong-Ou-Mandel dip showing 40% net visibility were measured. Moreover, the experiments were performed with standard single mode fibers spliced at both ends of the poled section, which makes this source easy to integrate in fiber-optic quantum communication applications.. ©2007 Optical Society of America. A foveated imaging system, which can be implemented on a general purpose computer and greatly reduces the transmission bandwidth of images has been developed. This system has demonstrated that significant reductions in bandwidth can be achieved while still maintaining access to high detail at any point in an image. The system is implemented with conventional computer, display, and camera hardware. It utilizes novel algorithms for image coding and decoding that are superior both in degree of compression and in perceived image quality and is more flexible and adaptable to different bandwidth requirements and communications applications than previous systems. The system utilizes novel methods of incorporating human perceptual properties into the coding the decoding algorithms providing superior foveation. One version of the system includes a simple, inexpensive, parallel pipeline architecture, which enhances the capability for conventional and foveated data compression. Included are novel applications of

This day in 1991 I was struggling with my first novel which I wanted to call Slurry but which Orion insisted was to be entitled The Kirkland Acres. I was concerned about pace and structure, at that stage, and wanted to get it right. I neednt have bothered, though. Aside from an extremely handy £10,000 advance, it was not reviewed by anyone, on publication, and fell flat on its face. Orions promotion budget and programme were laughable; the re-titling was a mistake but I learnt a little more about what fiction publishers are really like ...

A paper reporting an attitudinal study was sent for peer review. The editor received a letter from the reviewer stating that as he was personally acknowledged in the paper, he felt there was a conflict of interest and so unable to review the paper. The reviewer also pointed out that the research in question was part of a larger commissioned project with strict conditions of confidentiality. The persons surveyed were given assurance that the views expressed would remain unattributed and that the information gathered would be for research purposes only. The reviewer asked the editor to put the article on hold until he clarified whether or not the publication of part of the research findings would be acceptable, given the confidentiality agreements undertaken. Research integrity has two aspects that partially overlap. Firstly, there is integrity of the scientific literature, namely its freedom from errors, and secondly, the integrity of the researchers themselves, i.e. whether they act fairly and honestly. Failures of either can reduce the reproducibility of science, reduce its efficiency, waste funding, and have negative impacts on the scientists themselves, as well as, in some cases, their research subjects.. In the life sciences, statistician John Ioannidis has shown that study design and external pressures mean most published research findings are likely to be false, and drug makers Bayer and Amgen reported that 75% and 89% of preclinical findings could not be repeated. The number of published retractions is growing at an accelerating rate, and in most cases, the cause for the retraction is attributed to misconduct.. Three reasons are commonly evoked to explain how the errors that prevent reproducibility arise. They can be caused by bad luck or ...

Odd question... why are we so worried about teaching ethics rather than in getting other people to slow down and do the things that would mostly prevent it. When someone down the hall from you has a cool finding, go check it out. When someone far away has a cool finding, replicate. Sure, you can fake data in any field, but in most fields the findings deemed Very Important, are checked Very Quickly. It should be practically impossible to get away with more than one of these lapses in a high impact journal... because the definition of high impact should be something many people will quickly want to do themselves. ...
Dietary and herbal supplements (DHS) are currently popular. They are being promoted as being natural and therefore safe - an assumption that is clearly wrong: some DHS can contain toxic substances or they might cause interactions with drugs or other DHS.. This study explored whether adverse events were actually associated with such interactions and examined specific characteristics among inpatient DHS users prone to such adverse events. It was designed as a cross-sectional survey of 947 patients hospitalized in 12 departments of a tertiary academic medical centre in Haifa, Israel. It evaluated the rate of DHS use among inpatients, the potential for interactions, and actual adverse events during hospitalization associated with DHS use. It also assessed whether DHS consumption was documented in patients medical files. Statistical analysis was used to delineate DHS users at risk for adverse events associated with interactions with conventional drugs or other DHS.. The results show that about half ...
