While usually mild and self-limiting, they are characterized by a series of simultaneously occurring symptoms/ signs that are sufficiently disruptive to sufferers normal activities in which medication is frequently sought. We undertook a 2X2 factorial, randomized controlled trial (RCT) to assess whether vitamin D3 supplementation (10,000 international units per week) versus placebo and gargling versus no gargling could prevent viral, clinical upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in university students. We randomized 600 students into 4 treatment arms: 1) vitamin D3 and gargling, 2) placebo and gargling, 3) vitamin D3 and no gargling, and 4) placebo and no gargling. Students completed weekly electronic surveys and submitted self-collected mid-turbinate nasal flocked swabs during September and October in 2010 or 2011. In the current study, we propose investigating the roles of vitamin D supplementation and of regular gargling to prevent URTI/ILI. Vitamin D may be an important factor in respiratory health. Observational studies have associated low serum 25(OH)D levels with more frequent and more severe respiratory infections. Objective To characterise failure of antibiotic treatment in primary care in the United Kingdom in four common infection classes from 1991 to 2012.Design Longitudinal analysis of failure rates for first line antibiotic monotherapies associated with diagnoses for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and acute otitis media. Setting Routine primary care data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). Main outcome measures Adjusted rates of treatment failure defined by standardised criteria and indexed to year 1 (1991=100).
