It is with pleasure that I reach you through this newsletter.. Training of the next generation of researchers has always been a priority at the Institute of Infection and Immunity (III). We had our 7th New Investigator Forum (NIF) at Lac-Delage on May 26-28, 2017 (see p. 2). This was the last NIF under this current administration (our end date being June 2018) but I sincerely hope that this tradition will be maintained. Indeed, new investigators are benefiting from the advice of seasoned investigators but more importantly, they are building networks that often lead to exciting new collaborative projects.. We have worked on a number of calls in the field of HIV and antibio- tic resistance (see p. 3 & 6) and on upcoming calls on Lyme disease (see p. 4), HPV vaccination (see p. 5), and the microbiome (further details will be provided in the coming months).. The funding of some research activities that the Institute has helped build in the recent past have now been announced, and Phase 1 of Human ...

Medical researchers are putting a lot of resources into understanding genes as both the causes and solution to many diseases.. University of Rochester Medical Center Professor of Pediatrics, David Dean studies the best way to treat disease through gene therapy.. His laboratory recently received a 4-year, $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.. Doctor Dean explains one challenge facing researchers in his field.. "The main roadblock weve had to almost all the gene therapy techniques has been this one of delivery. How do you get it into cells and ultimately into humans?". Deans research seeks to find more efficient delivery systems for gene therapy-with potential implications for many diseases that are currently untreatable.. "What we find true in the cells that were using holds true in the lung, as well as it holds true in the brain if were doing delivery. So, on the one hand, it applies to everything.". Deans laboratory also focuses much attention on lung diseases, ...
I am also a co-investigator on the Brightlight NIHR applied programme studying outcomes in teenagers and young adults with cancer.. My favourite part of my job is anything which results in a visible improvement for young people with cancer. That might be a result of a research study showing how we can improve things in future (or that things are already improving), or it might be seeing a young person with a difficult problem and helping them to navigate their way through that, whether in the short term or in the longer term.. I also enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team, using the skills I have myself and those of all my colleagues to the greatest benefit of either the patients directly or of research projects.. I find young people and how they deal with illness very inspiring. I am also inspired by the energy, innovation and hard work of my colleagues.. ...
We believe that a key reason for the failure to successfully translate basic research findings into clinical practice has been the inappropriate interpretation of discordant, preliminary, and often nonreproducible preclinical findings and the premature application of such findings to the design of clinical studies. Therefore, our primary recommendation is the establishment of a consortium of basic and clinical investigators who would join forces to provide rigorous preclinical evaluation of promising cardioprotective interventions.. As conceived by us, this preclinical consortium should serve as a "filter" between investigator-initiated mechanistic studies and clinical efficacy trials of potential cardioprotective therapies. By testing both existing and promising new interventions (including combinations of potential therapies) in a standardized and rigorous manner, this consortium will address the lack of reproducibility that has plagued the field of cardioprotection for the past 30 years and ...

Now that we have the basics in place, on the second day we spend the whole day looking at research design and methodology. We define what this is, look at the importance of effective record keeping, as well as different types of data and commonly used research methods. It is emphasised that participants need to be able to rationalise why they have selected certain methods. We also cover key concepts that examiners are likely to raise, such as sampling, error, bias, reliability, validity and pilot testing. We also take a quick look at data analysis, both quantitative and qualitative. We go through an example of a comprehensive research design and methodology chapter, so that participants have a framework within which to structure and plan for their research design and methodology. Project management principles in research are also covered. In the afternoon, participants go back into their groups from the previous day, make changes in the light of the feedback that has been received and then take ...

Recent years have seen significant shifts in thinking on development cooperation. While official development assistance remains an important component, the focus has increasingly moved to partnerships for effective development, with South-South cooperation a critical and rapidly growing aspect. This shift is highlighted by the Busan Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation, adopted at the Fourth High-level Forum on Aid Effectiveness, in December 2011. In this context, capacity development and knowledge sharing, especially among countries pursuing similar development paths, are increasingly becoming more vital factors for inclusive and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.. Capacity development is at the core of ESCAPs technical cooperation programme. The main objective of our capacity development work is to develop the technical, managerial and institutional capacities of member and associate member governments to plan and deliver more effective policies and programmes in ...

Risks are always present in every project life cycle. A good project manager needs to be able to mitigate the risks proactively as well as keep an eye for potential risks. Good project management requires effective ways to control risks. Control risk is a process that involves the implementation of risk response plans. It also involves tracking the identified threatening risks, identifying new risks, monitoring residual risks as well as evaluating the efficacy of risk processes utilized during the entire project.. Control risks is a process under the project risk management. Part of project risk management. Its major advantage is that it improves the efficiency of the stakeholders to manage the risk throughout the lifecycle of the project. Moreover, it also encourages stakeholders to optimize their risk responses.. It has been administered to over 100 participants more than 80% of whom are project managers or team members-the groups who bear the brunt of their organizations effectiveness. Readers will take and review each question revealing startling details about how effective their project management office really is.PCIs initial findings suggest the greatest impact or predictor of project success is whether the senior management-knowingly or unknowingly-support, ignore or actually obstruct project progress. This may explain the high failure rates and costs reported elsewhere. The study also reports on project managers complaints and recommendations to improve overall performance.

Health services researchers support the identification, implementation and uptake of the most appropriate health care that is acceptable, accessible, safe, effective and value for money. To identify appropriate health care, health services researchers gather evidence to inform questions of who should deliver what health care in what settings to which patients. Such evidence includes data from clinical trials to determine what health care delivers the best patient outcomes, but also qualitative research to better understand why different ways of delivering health care produce different outcomes. As an example, Jodi Gray and colleagues interviewed consumers to assess the acceptability of a nurse-led obesity management program, which highlighted the benefits of a "non-judgemental, non-prescriptive way to learn about weight management in an environment that was convenient, accessible and trusted".. The identification of what is appropriate health care does not necessarily mean appropriate health ...

Software Everyone of us knows managing the dates, documents, tasks, and people in an organization can be a daunting task, especially when the some of the project team members arent located in the same office. Now how do we keep track of the happening and changes occurring in the project by different team players, it is really a tough task to maintain all of them and match up to the deadlines. For the rescue here comes the online project management software which is a great way to sort the things together. Online project management has many advantages especially when people work at remotely. This sort of web-based software package allows everyone in the project, wherever they might be, to find their relevant information easily, and would help them keep track of tasks and milestones, and see all the project files at one place. These tools have been very efficient in real life. Online project management is used in different scenarios such as, for a centralized area for online document review, to ...
This week I spent hours on Wimba and Skype, meeting with my team members and working on our History of IT project. It was an interesting experience. When I took online classes before, they were asynchonous and our group projects involved emails and posts, not live communication. After using Wimba for this, I do not know how I will be able to give it up at the end of our class. I will have to use something like Adobe Connect or Go to Meeting to get a similar experience. As I use Wimba more, I learn new things. I took the tutorials a while ago, so I was relieved when Brian showed us how to get the whiteboard feature back by pressing the eboard button. I also learned about project management this week and gant charts. Ive never heard of them before and apparently people have been using them forever. "What a concept!"
