Earlier studies have shown that TV watching is an important factor that increases the risk of obesity in children and adolescents, said paper author and epidemiologist Hannah Oh of the Korea University in Seoul.. However, she added, little is known about the effects of modern screen time such as smartphone use on diet and obesity.. Our data suggest that both smartphone usage time and content type may independently influence diet and obesity in adolescents. In their study, Professor Oh and colleagues analysed data on more than 53,000 adolescents - each aged 12-18 years - that was collected by the nationally representative Korea Youth Risk Behaviour Web-Based Survey.. The team compared the respondents smartphone usage with the extent to which they engaged in both healthy habits like eating fruit and vegetables, as well as unhealthy behaviours such as skipping breakfast or consuming fast and junk food.. The team also accounted for variables like socioeconomic status that are known to ...
Introduction: High sodium intake is an established risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. The average sodium intake in Koreans was estimated at 4,645mg/day, which was more than two times compared to the recommended amount, 2000mg/day. We assessed whether people who diagnosed with hypertension or treated for hypertension consume less sodium than those without hypertension.. Methods: The present study analyzed data from a total of 6,577 Koreans (3,816 women and 2,761 men) aged 40 years and older, participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES IV, 2007-2008). Participants were classified into five groups as follows: normal blood pressure, pre-hypertension, hypertension without treatment, hypertension with treatment, and hypertension with complications. The association between sodium intake and hypertension management status was estimated using exponential regression coefficient, adjusted for potential confounders including age, energy intake, ...

The aim of this study was to apply the Korean Dietary Pattern Score (KDPS) to Korean subjects based on traditional Korean-style meals. The KDPS is based on the 3-Chup Bansang (the traditional Korean daily table setting) and considers the intake of 6 major food groups according to the Korean Dietary Reference Intakes (KDRIs). The KDPS consists of 2 parts: the Korean-Style Meal Score (KSMS) and the Food Group Score (FGS). The KDPS was applied dietary data collected during the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in 2007. Socio-demographic status, gender, age, and body mass index are all factors that have been shown to be meaningful predictors for the KDPS. When the effect of the KDPS on risk of disease was evaluated, a higher total KDPS was associated with a decreased risk of elevated systolic blood pressure (p < 0.05) and hypercholesterolemia (p < 0.05). In addition, as the KSMS increased, the risk of central obesity (p < 0.05) and hypertension (p < 0.01)

Prior studies focused on bioaccumulation of mercury (Hg) and on large, long-lived fish species as the major environmental source of Hg, but little is known about consumption of small-sized fish or about non-dietary determinants of circulating Hg levels. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whole blood mercury concentration (WBHg) and its major dietary and non-dietary correlates in Korean adults. We analyzed cross-sectional data from 3,972 (male = 1,994; female = 1,978) participants who completed the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV, 2008 to 2009. Relevant factors included diet, geographic location of residence, demographics, and lifestyle. WBHg concentration was measured using cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. Multivariable linear models assessed independent correlates of dietary and non-dietary factors for WBHg levels. Median levels of WBHg were 5.1 μg/L in men and 3.7 μg/L in women. Higher levels of fish/shellfish intake were associated with higher levels of

The identification of predictors for body image distortion would be an especially important first step in targeting a vulnerable population and developing a nutrition intervention program. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of body image distortion and the factors associated with body image distortion among Korean high school students. We selected 20,264 normal weight high school students from the 10th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey using nationally representative data in 2014. With multivariate logistic regression, we assessed the association of body image distortion with individual demographic and socio-economic factors, weight control behaviors, and mental health characteristics. The over-estimation group of body weight status, compared with the correct estimation group, was significantly more likely to be a 3rd year high school student [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.27, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.16-1.39], to be female [AOR: 3.52, 95 % CI: 3.25-3.81], to employ unhealthy weight

South Koreas President Moon Jae-in said on Thursday North Koreas shooting of a South Korean civilian was shocking and unpardonable, Yonhap news agency said, citing a presidential Blue House official.
If South Korea is offering a temporary reduction in privacy in exchange for protection against a highly contagious disease, then its a trade-off many South Koreans seem happy with. Amid the coronavirus crisis, South Korean President Moon Jae-in is enjoying his highest approval ratings in months. Ki Moran, who heads the Korean Society of Preventive Medicines committee for emergency response, says the MERS crisis demonstrated a dire need to find the missing parts in epidemiological investigations. Loosening South Koreas privacy laws was the correct way to do that, she says. Its the main reason why epidemiological investigations can be so detailed now, says Ki. In some ways, South Koreas government is further aided by institutional remnants of its authoritarian past, says Lee Sang-sin, who focuses on political science and public opinion at the Korean Institute for National Unification. One of those remnants is South Koreas national registration system, he says. Under the system, phone ...

The Maeng familys story has attracted national attention because federal officials had said the family had to leave Canada by June 30 because providing health care and social services for 14-year-old Sung-Joo would put too much strain on the system.. On Wednesday, the New Brunswick government responded to growing public outrage by handing a private letter to the family confirming the province will pay for the boys health-care and social service costs.. The senior Citizenship and Immigration Canada source said the four-member family would be allowed to stay in Canada to continue the process of seeking permanent residency, but Kenneys department couldnt act until Thursday when it ...

Results.: Among the participants, 80.1% had myopia (−0.5 diopters [D] or more myopic) and 8.9% had high myopia (−6.0 D or more myopia). Age, total energy/Ca intake, area of residence, parental income, and smoking experience were significantly different among groups according to SE (All, P , 0.05). The age-adjusted distribution of SE according to serum 25(OH)D concentration showed a positive relationship (r = 0.067, P = 0.012). The myopia ...
Structural Change Bodes Well For Sector BMI View: South Korean banks appear to be going through a fundamental change in their external debt profiles, having increased sharply their holdings of long-term external borrowings in order to repay and reduce their reliance of short-term debt. Liquidity conditions have also been improving since the 2008/09 crisis. While earnings are expected to slide in 2012, adequate capitalisation and improving liquidity conditions will help to buffer banks against a short-term downturn. Following on from our recent article on the threat posed by the recent surge in South Koreas external debt levels(see, Hidden Debt A Growing Risk, March 14), we now assess the state of the banking sectors foreign borrowings. Subsequently, we present our take on why we expect banking profits to decline in 2012. Structural Change. Overseas debt owned by South Korean banks accounted for roughly half of all external South Korean debt in 2011, down markedly from the levels seen prior to the

However, there is a lot of reliance on the parent or teacher who fills out the evaluation forms. The problem is that such a process has room for subjective judgment of parents and teachers.. In the case of parents with high anxiety, it is possible to report the seriousness of the childrens problems with high severity, while parents with low anxiety may downplay the childrens symptoms.. Also, even if the child needs treatment, symptoms may worsen due to the false belief of parents or caregivers who may have a wrong idea of the disorder and lead to secondary complications.. Therefore it is necessary to consider the credibility of the information carefully, and the ADHD diagnosis process requires high proficiency of the ...
To evaluate the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and serious adverse events in adolescent girls in South Korea.Cohort study.A large linked database created by linking the Korea Immunization Registry Information System and the National Health Information Database, between January 2017 and December 2019.441 399 girls aged 11-14 years who had been vaccinated in 2017: 382 020 had been vaccinated against HPV and 59 379 had not been vaccinated against HPV.Outcomes were 33 serious adverse events, including endocrine, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, haematological, dermatological, and neurological diseases. A cohort design was used for the primary analysis and a self-controlled risk interval design for the secondary analysis; both analyses used a risk period of one year after HPV vaccination for each outcome. Incidence rate and adjusted rate ratios were estimated using Poisson regression in the primary analysis, comparing the HPV vaccinated group with the HPV ...
Dictators are notoriously touchy when it comes to criticism. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is no exception. Expressing anything less than extreme admiration of the supreme leader risks a lengthy prison stay. The latest spat with South Korea has produced a literally explosive reaction from North Korea, which blew up the inter-Korean liaison office in the village of Kaesong, on the northern side of the border.. North Korea has very clearly signaled that talking is futile and that its back to bullying to get what it wants-and Seoul is only encouraging it. Now the South Korean government is preparing to do Pyongyangs dirty work by forbidding private groups from sending political tracts to North Korea. This cowardly decision sacrifices citizens basic rights and encourages North Korea to make additional demands.. Seouls policy toward North Korea was unremittingly hostile and counterproductive for a long time, changing significantly only with former President Kim Dae-jungs visit to Pyongyang in ...
The facts of this incident have not been clearly written and require verification.] On 26 May 2015, a 44-year-old South Korean man, his father and elder sister [were all] confirmed to be infected by MERS. [The 44-year-old man], paying no notice to a doctors advice [plus] a self-quarantine order from the government, travelled via Hong Kong to Huizhou China for a business trip. When he was later found to have a fever, he was suspected of being dishonest with border quarantine officers in Hong Kong by concealing that he had visited his father in hospital on 16 May for nearly 4 hours.[21] He tested positive for MERS.[22]. On 30 May 2015, a website said that a driver in Huizhou who transported a South Korean male MERS patient was suspected to be infected but later the government clarified that this was a rumor.[23]. A Chinese fugitive who stayed in South Korea for 3 years turned himself in as he was afraid of the outbreak. He arrived at Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport on 4 June.[24]. On 8 ...

In South Korea, alternative schools serve three big groups of youth in South Korea. The first group is students who could not succeed in formative Korean education. Many of these schools serve students who dropped out during their earlier school years, either voluntarily or by disciplinary action. The second group is young immigrants. As the population of immigrants from Southeast Asia and North Korea is increasing, several educators started to see the necessity of the adaptive education, specially designed for these young immigrants. Because South Korea has been a monoethnic society throughout its history, there is not enough system and awareness to protect these students from bullying, social isolation, or academic failure. For instance, the drop-out rate for North Korean immigrant students is ten times higher than that of students from South Korean students because their major challenge is initially to adapt to South Korean society, not to get a higher test score. The other group is students ...

The land ministry said Friday that concerns about national security outweighed benefits from exporting the countrys mapping data to Google, a unit of Alphabet.. South Korea, facing the overt threat of rival North Korea, bars exporting local mapping data to foreign companies that do not operate domestic data servers.. Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., handles its maps service at data centers outside South Korea. The restrictions have limited the usefulness of Google Maps within South Korea, since the app cannot offer driving or walking directions.. The government had proposed granting permission to Google to use local mapping data for Google Maps if the company would blur sensitive information on South Korean military facilities on its satellite map.. Our position from the start was that if it deletes security facilities, we would allow exporting (the local mapping data), said Kim Tong-il, an official at the land ministry. Googles position is that it wont delete those. The question was ...
The aim of this study is to examine the validity and reliability of the Korean version of attitudes towards suicide (ATTS) on a group of university students, which would contribute to the evaluation of the ATTS as a useful tool of measuring attitudes toward suicide in South Korea with very high suicide rates. The subjects of the study were 195 undergraduates at Chung-Ang University, South Korea in 2013. The measure for assessing public attitudes towards suicide was ATTS made up of 34 items in English and the Korean version of it was produced by forward and backward translation procedure. To identify any factors unique to South Koreans attitudes towards suicide, we applied exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to the data from 195 university students and was followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to assess construct validity of the Korean version. The internal consistency of the scale was assessed using Cronbachs α and the assessment of the test-retest reliability was performed by intraclass

Patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) may be at greater risk of developing chronic kidney disease, a team of South Korean researchers report.. Their population-based study, published in Glaucoma, included information from more than a million subjects listed in the 2002-2013 Korean National Health Insurance database. The researchers identified patients with POAG and used diagnostic codes to evaluate the risk of subsequent chronic kidney disease. The study also analyzed three models: the first included POAG only; the second included POAG and demographic information; the third included POAG, demographic information, comorbidities and medication use. The fixed cohort represented 478,303 subjects, including 1,749 who had incident POAG and 3,157 who developed chronic kidney disease. In model one, the researchers reported POAG was associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease by more than seven-fold. However, the risk was lower in model two, dropping to more than three-fold. ...
