BACKGROUND Rural-to-urban migration involves a high proportion of females because job opportunities for female migrants have increased in urban industrial areas. Those who migrate may be healthier than those staying in the village and they may benefit from better health care services at destination, but the healthy effect can be reversed at destination due to migration-related health risk factors. The study aimed to explore the need for health care services for reproductive tract infections (RTIs) among female migrants working in the Sai Dong industrial zone as well as their services utilization. METHODS The cross sectional study employed a mixed method approach. A cohort of 300 female migrants was interviewed to collect quantitative data. Two focus groups and 20 in-depth interviews were conducted to collect qualitative data. We have used frequency and cross-tabulation techniques to analyze the quantitative data and the qualitative data was used to triangulate and to provide more in-depth
BACKGROUND: Women requesting abortion are at increased risk of developing RTI complications. However, RTI control in many resource-poor countries including Vietnam have been faced with logistical and methodological problems due to lack of standardized definitions of RTIs, lack of well-validated diagnostic criteria, lack of accurate laboratory tests, and lack of diagnostic equipment and skills. This article investigates the prevalence of RTIs among Vietnamese abortion-seeking women, to evaluate the available diagnostic techniques, and to assess antibiotic resistance among aetiological agents of RTI. METHOD: The study was conducted in Phu-San hospital (PSH) from December 2003 through April 2004 among 748 abortion clients. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-economic and reproductive characteristics. Specimens were collected for laboratory analyses of chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, vaginal candidiasis (VC), bacterial vaginosis (BV) and syphilis. To assess the ...

Congressional representatives and those in executive positions should make a clear stand on not just respecting the rights of individuals and couples to informed choice. They must clearly make a stance that they will earmark funds to provide wide access to modern contraceptives and reproductive health care services. It is very easy for middle class and upper class women to pay for their own contraceptives and other reproductive health care services but this is not the case for poor women in the communities, rural areas, and in the ARMM. For poor women, they are unable to buy contraceptives, they cannot afford to pay for anti-biotics to treat their reproductive tract infection for them to be able to have an IUD inserted, they cannot afford to pay for a P2,500 ligation procedure even when they already have four or more children, they are unable to get pre-natal and post-natal check ups because they have to tend to the needs of their several children at home nor they can pay for a simple PAP smear ...

The objective of this section is to provide guidance for safe conception and pregnancy while maximizing efforts to prevent HIV transmission to partners and infants. For couples in which one or both partners are living with HIV, optimal health should be attained before attempting conception; couples should be counseled to only attempt conception after the partners living with HIV have initiated antiretroviral therapy (ART) and have achieved sustained suppression of plasma viral load below the limits of detection. For couples with the same or differing HIV status who want to conceive, expert consultation is recommended so that approaches can be tailored to their specific needs.. Before attempting to conceive, both partners should be screened for genital tract infections. Treatment of such infections is important because genital tract inflammation is associated with genital tract shedding of HIV.1-5. Couples with Differing HIV Status. Before conception is attempted, the partner living with HIV ...

I did not start to make social commentaries about my country. The first one that you see in front of you is actually when I first returned to Iran after being separated for a good 12 years. It was after the Islamic revolution of 1979. While I was in absence from Iran, Islamic revolution had descended on Iran and entirely transformed the culture from Persian to Islamic culture.. I came mainly to be reunited with my family and to reconnect in a way that I found my place in society, but instead I found a country that was totally ideological and that I didnt recognize anymore. More so I became very interested as I was facing my own personal dilemmas and questions I became immersed in the study of the Islamic revolution, how indeed it had incredibly transformed the lives of Iranian women. I found the subject of Iranian women immensely interesting in the way that the women of Iran historically seemed to embody the political transformation. So in a way, by studying a women, you can read the structure ...

Since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, family planning managers are rising to the challenge to offer a broader scope of reproductive health services to their clients. This means that in addition to providing family planning services, more programs are offering a wider range of basic health services for women, infants, and adolescents, including well-baby care, the prevention and treatment of reproductive tract infections, and counseling for the prevention of HIV, among others. In order to plan, implement, and monitor the effectiveness of these services, managers need to understand and use a broad spectrum of data from the national and local level.. This issue of The Family Planning Manager explores information that managers must understand and use in expanding their services, and it provides guidelines for developing and using a reproductive health indicator panel for tracking the progress of their programs. Two supplements accompany this issue. ...

Clinical trials are urgently needed to test a new treatment that could jointly tackle leading causes of death for babies in sub-Saharan Africa, according to researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association today suggests that a considerable number of pregnant women accessing antenatal care in the region have malaria and sexually transmitted/reproductive tract infections (STIs/RTIs).. An estimated 25 million pregnancies are at risk of malaria each year in sub-Saharan Africa. The study shows that nearly 4 of every 10 women at health facilities have a malaria infection. An even higher number of women, if added together, are infected with the STIs/RTIs syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, trichomononiasis and bacterial vaginosis.. There are 880,000 stillbirths and 1.2 million newborn deaths each year in sub-Saharan Africa, many of which are linked to maternal infection. For unborn babies, malaria and STIs/RTIs ...
Vaccination strategies for protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are lacking due to an incomplete understanding of genital tract T cell responses. This thesis dissects the generation of T helper subsets, including the recently discovered Th17 subset, during genital tract infection with a common sexually transmitted pathogen, Chlamydia trachomatis, and addresses vaccine requirements for the generation of genital tract CD4+ T cell immunity. Our studies demonstrate the presence of anatomically distinct T helper differentiation patterns in the genital tract. C57BL/6 mice were infected with C. trachomatis and the response in the upper genital tract (UGT) was found to be dominated by Th1 cells, whereas the lower genital tract (LGT) hosted Th2 cells in the presence of IL-10-producing DCs. Additionally, Treg and Th17 responses were demonstrated in both the UGT and LGT following infection. For the generation of T cell-mediated immunity against infection, costimulatory signals through ...

Mucosal immunity to Chlamydia trachomatis in a mouse model of female genital tract infection is mediated predominantly by Th1-type cells, as shown by in vivo neutralization of cytokines involved in the Th1 vs Th2 pathways. Neutralization of IL-12 was associated with an apparent decrease in the infiltration of CD4+ T cells into infected tissues, systemic reductions in the production of IFN-gamma, and prolonged shedding of high levels of bacteria. Neutralization of IL-4 had no detectable effect on host immunity or on bacterial clearance. To dissociate the protective role of IL-12 from that of IL-12-induced IFN-gamma, resistance to C. trachomatis was compared in IL-12-depleted and IFN-gamma-deficient animals. IL-12-depleted mice displayed minimal bacterial clearance for 1 mo post-infection but eventually resolved genital tract infections completely. IFN-gamma-deficient mice, on the other hand, cleared 99.9% of genital Chlamydia within the first 3 wk but then developed systemic disease associated ...

My Stealthy Freedom, the popular Facebook page famous for featuring photos sent by women from Iran "who want to share their stealthily taken photos without the veil," has announced a new project featuring weekly profiles of "ordinary [Iranians] dealing or struggling with everyday issues inside Iran." The new series will weekly as part of the show Tablet on Voice of America Persian. In an astonishing first submission to the project, women from across the country submitted videos of their own "ordinary" lives as women in Iran, the pages founder Masih Alinejad told Women in the World .. One woman featured in the first installment of the new series, an actress named Sadaf Taherian, recalled being repeatedly humiliated and objectified when meeting with film companies. She ultimately was forced to flee Iran after posting photos of herself on social media showing her not wearing a hijab. The Iranian government deemed her an "offender" and threatened that she could no longer work as an actress. ...

Problem: Chlamydia trachomatis is a significant worldwide health problem, and the often-asymptomatic disease can result in infertility. To develop a successful vaccine, a complete understanding of the immune response to chlamydial infection and development of genital tract pathology is required. Method of Study We utilized the murine genital model of chlamydial infection. Mice were immunized with chlamydial major outer membrane protein, and vaginal lavage was assessed for the presence of neutralizing antibodies. These samples were then pre-incubated with Chlamydia muridarum and administered to the vaginal vaults of immune-competent female BALB⁄ c mice to determine the effect on infection. Results The administration of C. muridarum in conjunction with neutralizing antibodies reduced the numbers of mice infected, but a surprising finding was that this accelerated the development of severe oviduct pathology. Conclusion Antibodies play an under-recognized role in chlamydial infection and pathology
FIG. 4. Absence of ABCD-1 (CCL22) mRNA in infected Bm1.11 cells. RT-PCR assays for ABCD-1 and Mig (CXCL9) were performed on total RNA isolated from Bm1.11 cells infected with C. muridarum for 18 h and activated peritoneal macrophages (Activated MACS) as a positive control. Asterisks mark the specific RT-PCR products for each primer pair. There is a spurious PCR band (280 bp) in the ABCD-1 (220 bp) RT-PCR that is present in both activated peritoneal macrophages and infected Bm1.11 cells (see Materials and Methods). Mig, a low-level transcript in infected epithelial cells, is readily detected in infected Bm1.11 cells by using the same RNA samples. Data are representative of three independent experiments showing the same result. ...

Conclusions Normal resolution infection in TLR2/TLR4 DKOs suggests that alternative PRR pathways drive the response that promotes clearance of infection. Our findings also demonstrate that there is a TLR4-dependent/MyD88-independent pathway, likely the TLR4-Trif pathway, that can drive CD4 T-cell proliferation in response to chlamydial infection. However, this response is not necessary for infection clearance, given the ability of TLR4/MyD88 DKO to resolve infection. An intact antibody response, shown here to be independent of TLR4, TLR2, and MyD88 pathways, is adequate to resolve chlamydial infection in the presence of innate immune cells despite an absence of CD4 T-cell activation. ...
A blog by Dr. Matthew A. Lederman, RMA of New York, March 9, 2015 Secondary infertility refers to couples who have had a successful pregnancy in the past, but then experience difficulty with conceiving. Part of this may be explained by age, especially if their last pregnancy was achieved in their late thirties or early forties. In young, healthy women, the average monthly pregnancy rate is approximately 20%. As women age, this rate starts to decline, especially after 35 because both the number of eggs, as well as the quality of eggs decline with age. Additionally, the miscarriage rate also increases with age which can usually be attributed to the quality of the eggs.
Secondary infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected, well-timed intercourse for couples in which one or both partners have previously conceived a child.

The Forbidden Kiss. Original Story: May 19: An Iranian film star, Leila Hatami, is in Cannes to serve as a judge in the festival. When Gilles Jacob, the festivals president, kissed her on the cheek and she responded as is the custom, the Iranian Deputy Culture Minister Hossein Noushabadi was appalled at her unchaste behavior.. "Those who attend intentional events should take heed of the credibility and chastity of Iranians, so that a bad image of Iranian women will not be demonstrated to the world," Deputy Culture Minister Hossein Noushabadi said, quoted by the website of state broadcaster IRIB.. "Iranian woman is the symbol of chastity and innocence," he said. Hatamis "inappropriate presence" at the festival was "not in line with our religious beliefs.". Who do these Iranian men think they are?. Jacob tried to quell the furor by explaining it was a custom. ...
A total of 371 men were included, 240 having been excluded for conditions that could affect fertility e.g. excessive smoking or alcohol use, any severe acute or chronic systemic illness, physical abnormalities of the reproductive organs, altered levels of the spermatogenesis-related hormones, or a genital tract infection. Details of cell phone use were included in the history taken from each man. Two separate groups were established. In the first group, men were divided into those who used their phone for less than 15 minutes per day, and those who used it for more than 60 minutes (high transmitters). In the other group, they were divided into those who kept their cell phone in the standby position within a distance of 50 cm for less than 1 hour daily, and those who kept it in standby for more than 20 hours daily. Semen analysis was carried out in each man ...

22 May 2004 , Geneva - The World Health Organizations first strategy on reproductive health was adopted today by the 57th World Health Assembly (WHA). Reproductive and sexual ill-health accounts for 20% of the global burden of ill-health for women, and 14% for men.. The strategy targets five priority aspects of reproductive and sexual health: improving antenatal, delivery, postpartum and newborn care; providing high-quality services for family planning, including infertility services; eliminating unsafe abortion; combating sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, reproductive tract infections, cervical cancer and other gynaecological morbidities; and promoting sexual health.. "Unsafe sex is one of the biggest risks to our health today, largely as a result of acquiring sexually-transmitted infections, such as HIV/AIDS. Reproductive and sexual health touches the lives of everyone, everywhere," says Joy Phumaphi, Assistant Director-General of Family and Community Health at WHO. "It is ...
Trichomoniasis has been linked to pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical cancer, increased HIV transmission, infertility as well as co-infections with other STIs. In 2002, an association was found with Trichomonas vaginalis and PID in HIV positive women. Therefore, the question arose whether T. vaginalis is able to invade the upper genital tract of HIV infected women. A prerequisite for invasion of the upper genital tract is the capability of the organism to adhere to the cells of the organs involved. This study therefore investigated the interaction between T. vaginalis and vaginal, cervical and endometrial cells. In comparing adhesion and cytotoxicity of T. vaginalis to cells of the upper and lower genital tract at different pH, immortalized vaginal (VK2), cervical (ME 180) and endometrial (KLE) cells were exposed to a standardized inoculum of trichomonads at pH 4.5 to 7.0. Adhesion was measured microscopically after acridine orange staining and cytotoxicity was established by measuring LDH ...
