We analyzed the first autologous fresh IVF or IVF-ICSI cycle of 4,609 patients. There were no differences in the rates of cycle cancellation, spontaneous abortion, biochemical and ectopic pregnancies, or multiple births. After adjusting for potential confounders, patients with BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2 had significantly decreased odds of implantation, clinical pregnancy, and live birth. The adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval [CI]) of live birth were 0.63 (0.47-0.85) for BMI 30.00-34.99, 0.39 (0.25-0.61) for BMI 35.00-39.99, and 0.32 (0.16-0.64) for BMI ≥40.0 compared with normal-weight cohorts.. Downloadable! This paper documents stylized facts of international medium-term business cycles by exploring the pattern of comovement between a catching-up economy, Spain, and each of the obvious candidate countries to technological leadership of the 1950-2007 period, the U.S., France, Germany, Italy and the U.K. A remarkable feature of the international medium-term business cycle is the strong, positive lead displayed by the U.S. technology and terms of trade cycles over Spains macroeconomic aggregates. The corresponding evidence when the counterpart to Spain is a large European economy is weaker, particularly in the case of Europes medium-term technology cycles. Non-parametric tests results suggest that, over the medium-term cycle, a shift towards more economic integration may not necessarily be associated with increased international comovement.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) include 1% of births in the US and 4.3% of births in European countries and Australia [1]. Scientific and medical advances have increased the pregnancy rates and births following ART can be expected to rise. Any method or medication to achieve pregnancy is accepted as a broad definition of the concept of ART, which includes ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) [2]. Application of these methods has solved the infertility problem of human and had multiple health benefits for millions of couples suffering from fertility problems [3]. During the past 36 years, ART has reformed from a miracle to a standard and common part of medical practice. More than 200 000 infants are annually born worldwide by this technology [2]. It is estimated that over 5 million children worldwide have been born after ART procedures [1]. There are worldwide 72.4 million infertile women and 21-22% of ...

In the United States, 6.7 million women are diagnosed with impaired fecundity.1 With advances in reproductive technology and wider insurance coverage, more than 175,000 cycles of assisted reproductive technology (ART) are performed on an annual basis.2 Whereas the use of in vitro fertilization in the United States is recorded in a national registry, the use of non-ART ovulation stimulation is not reported, and specific data is not available. By one estimate, the mean percentage of all U.S. births conceived with non-ART ovulation stimulation was 4.62% in 2005 (95% CI 2.8%-7.1% corresponding to 114,782-292,713 infants yearly).3 Approximately 40.5 million women are currently seeking infertility treatment globally.4 As these numbers are thought to be increasing, these patients are more likely to seek care in a local emergency department. Emergency physicians, therefore, need to have knowledge of both the common and the life-threatening complications of fertility treatment, including both ART and ...

Clinics should warn patients about the increased risk of birth defects for children conceived using fertility treatment, say the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).. The HFEA, the body which regulates all UK fertility treatment centres, is planning to release new guidelines. They will ask clinics to inform people seeking treatment about the association between birth defects and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as IVF.. Health problems including low birth weight and neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy are more likely to occur in children conceived through fertility treatment, although the increase is only slight.. The overall risk associated with fertility treatments is small, however. Previous estimates from the HFEA indicate that the risk of developing birth defects increases from a general population level of 2 percent to 2.6 percent with fertility treatment. After a comprehensive review, the HFEA is updating its guidelines on patient information to ...
In this nationwide study with data from a span of 20 years, we found that ART treatments in women with UC and CD led to a reduced chance of a live birth per cycle, compared with ART treatments in women without IBD. Comparison of embryo transfers in women with CD who had had surgery before infertility treatment with those without prior surgery, showed a decreased chance of live births in women who had had surgery. After ART, the risk of preterm birth for children of women with UC was increased fivefold compared with children of women without IBD, but the risk disappeared when singletons only were evaluated.. This is the first study, based on nationwide data, analysing the chance of live birth after ART treatment in women with UC and CD. Earlier, the outcome of ART treatment was studied in 71 women with UC and 49 with CD from two tertiary care centres,17 ,18 who were compared with 470 controls from the general infertile population. It was found that the proportion of live births after the first ...

As we move towards the end (fingers crossed!) of a staggered and fractured response to a global pandemic, the final session of PETs annual conference asked what European countries can learn from one other in the resumption of fertility treatment.. The session, sponsored by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), was chaired by that organisations former chair Dr Anna Veiga, who is also coordinator of ESHREs COVID-19 Working Group. Covering Belgium, Italy and Ireland, three speakers from the working group built a picture of what is happening across Europe, and detailed the work that ESHRE has done to guide fertility services during the pandemic. Dr Veiga explained that their work has included guidance for clinics, practical support for professionals and patients by providing information, and improving knowledge by gathering data on the impact of COVID-19 on assisted reproductive technology (ART) and ART pregnancies in Europe, for example, or by offering a research ...

Karyomapping is ideal for a number of people. Couples that already have an affected child, those that already know their family history of a particular disorder, and those that have had their DNA tested to confirm the presence of a defective gene are all good candidates for this technique. Through karyomapping, embryos are screened before implantation in the uterus, a practice called preimplanation genetic diagnosis (PGD).. When couples come to CRGH for fertility treatments, which often involve in vitro fertilisation (IVF), karyomapping and PGD is highly recommended because it helps reduce the chance that a foetus will be affected by a particular genetic disorder and will reduce the risk of miscarriage or failed implantation. In other words, it is linked to more babies!. Karyomapping has a much more generalised application than our highly specialised PGD efforts, which typically look for a specific mutation. With karyomapping, the scope is much broader because it is tracking affected genes ...

FSH causes the recruitment, and supports the development, of the ovarian follicles, which contain an egg each. The pituitary gland produces FSH after it is stimulated with gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). Injectable FSH is used in assisted reproductive technology cycles, usually for 7-10 days, to stimulate the recruitment and development of multiple eggs, which are needed for procedures such as IVF and IVF/ICSI.. Patients undergoing ovulation induction with FSH are carefully monitored using vaginal probe ultrasound and E2 hormone measurements to check follicular development and avoid serious side effects. The ultrasound determines follicle size and count. It is also used to assess the thickness of the endometrium (lining of the uterus). If the lining is thin, it may indicate a hormonal problem.. The most severe adverse effect associated with FSH products is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which occurs in approximately 1% if cases. These drugs must always be administered by a ...

In the UK the odds of having a live birth from IVF average about 25 per cent, depending on age and other factors, and in 2013 nearly 50,000 British women had fertility treatment in both private and NHS clinics, the resulting children accounting for two per cent of all births. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (Nice) recommends that couples in which the woman is under 40 should get three free cycles of IVF. But a post code lottery for fertility treatment on the NHS forces many UK couples down the private route. Susan Seenan, the chief executive of the charity Infertility Network (IN), said, If you live in one area you might get one cycle of IVF only, and if you picked yourself up and moved post code by only 10 miles, you might get three full cycles on the NHS. The price of private fertility treatment in the UK is high, she explained, so UK couples are often forced to go abroad, where it can be more affordable.. Indeed, an online survey by the IN found that the reasons couples travel ...
Many times couples cannot become pregnant without specialized medical care. As the name implies, ART procedures are those that employ advanced technologies to help couples become pregnant. This page includes brief descriptions of various ART procedures with links to more detailed discussions.. ART procedures include in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, donor egg IVF, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, assisted hatching, and blastocyst transfer, where physicians, embryologists, and other technicians utilize their training, skills, and equipment to cause eggs to fertilize, develop, and implant in the uterus.. In vitro fertilization is an ART procedure that was first successfully performed in 19789 in England by doctors Steptoe and Edwards and later in the United States by Howard Jones, MD and Georgianna Jones, MD at the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Norfolk, VA.. In in vitro fertilization the female receives medication causing her ovaries to produce numerous ...
The purpose of the present study was to analyze birth defects (congenital anomalies) after assisted reproductive technology (ART) according to the method of treatment, namely in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET). Individual lists of all ART pregnancies resulting in birth defects from birth year 2004 to 2012 presented in the annual reports by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology were used as the initial sources of information. Relative risks (RRs) with the corresponding 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with IVF as the reference group when calculating RR of ICSI for IVF, and with FET as the reference group when calculating the RR of fresh embryo transfer for FET. In total, 2725 stillbirths or live births with birth defects were analyzed. The prevalence of birth defects was slightly yet significantly higher in ICSI compared with IVF throughout the study period (RR = 1.15, 95 % CI 1.02-1.29) and in the 2004
Intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization are considered the gold standard of fertility treatment. IUI involves placing sperm directly into the uterus through a catheter to increase the odds of implantation, while IVF combines the sperm and egg in a laboratory and transfers the resulting embryo into the uterus. Both of these procedures are expensive, but they offer an effective last resort for couples who have failed to conceive through other methods.. If fertility treatments fail to work for you, dont give up on your journey to parenthood. There are many other great options for building a family, such as gestational surrogacy, embryo donation, adoption and fostering.. ...

Can assisted reproductive technology (ART) help Singapores languishing fertility record?. NUS Visiting Professor Eric Blyth from the University of Huddersfield, England, addressed this question at a recent seminar organised by the Department of Social Work. The attendees comprised Department staff and research students; professionals from local hospitals; and representatives from the Ministry of Health (MOH, Ministry of Community, Youth and Sports (MCYS) as well as the National Population and Talent Division.. The discussion covered the extent, causes and consequences of nearly 40 years of below replacement fertility in Singapore, and the potential benefits of publicly funded fertility treatments and accessibility to elective oocyte cryopreservation. The latter, frequently described as social egg freezing, has been suggested as a means of protecting the fertility of young women against ageing and thus increasing their chances of successful conception if they later decide to expand their ...

Fertility treatments such as fertility drugs, surgery and high-tech artificial reproductive technologies (ART) such as IVF, IUI, ICSI and more are commonly used to help women get pregnant and have children.
Each year, 219,000 to 246,000 babies conceived through assisted reproductive technology (ART) are born worldwide, says an international study that also found that the number of ART procedures increased by more than 25 percent between 2000 and 2002. Researchers analyzed 2002 data from 1,563 clinics in 53 countries but noted data were missing from a number of countries, mostly in Asia, Africa, Oceania and the West Indies.

The rate of multiple births for mothers who receive fertility treatments is higher than 20 percent in some areas of China, the top health authority said in an exclusive email exchange with China Daily.
According to the Pope Paul VI institute, a major proponent of natural infertility treatment, so-called natural reproductive technology has higher success rates than IVF for various infertility diagnoses. These results are both statistically significant (i.e. not due to chance) and personally significant (i.e. theyre a lot higher). For example, for a diagnosis of endometriosis, IVF has a success (pregnancy) rate of about 21%, while natural reproductive treatment has a success rate of about 57%. It reports a 37% success rate for tubal occlusion compared to IVFs 27%. The whopping 82% success rate reported for natural fertility treatment of anovulation (not producing mature eggs) may be due to straightforward treatment of the most obvious cause of anovulation, hormonal insufficiency (although I am speculating here ...

Serotype-specific antibody concentration and opsonophagocytic activity (OPA) were evaluated after 3 doses of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. Groups included human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive infants with CD4+ cell percentages ≥25% who initiated immediate antiretroviral treatment (the HIV+/ART+ group) or whose antiretroviral treatment was deferred until clinically or immunologically indicated (the HIV+/ART+ group). Immune responses were also evaluated in HIV-noninfected infants born to HIV-seronegative (M+/I+) or HIV-positive mothers (M+/I+). Antibody concentrations were similar between HIV+/ART+ and HIV+/ART+ infants. However, antibody concentrations were lowerin M+/I+ infants than in M+/I+ infants. Nevertheless, M+/I+ infants had superior OPA responses, compared with those in HIV+/ART+ infants, who in turn had better OPA responses, compared with those in HIV+/ART+ infants. © 2010 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America.. ...
Through the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), multiple children are born adding to worldwide carbon emissions. Evaluating the ethics of offering reproductive services against its overall harm to the environment makes unregulated ARTs unjustified, yet the ART business can move towards sustainability as a part of the larger green bioethics movement. By integrating ecological ethos into the ART industry, climate change can be mitigated and the conversation about consumption can become a broader public discourse. Although the impact of naturally made children on the environment is undeniable, I will focus on the ART industry as an anthropogenic source of carbon emissions which lead to climate change. The ART industry is an often overlooked source of environmental degradation and decidedly different from natural reproduction as fertility centres provide a service for a fee and therefore can be subject to economic, policy and bioethical scrutiny. In this article, I will provide a brief ...

The Centers for Disease Control requires outcome data be reported to the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) which is the organization that compiles statistics.[2] Fertility clinics are often compared by these IVF success rates. However, its important to note that SART puts a caution at bottom of each report that reads Patient characteristics vary among programs; therefore, these data should not be used for comparing clinics. A consultation with many fertility clinics is always a good option to get a more complete comparison for a patients specific situation and needs. ...
