Once the physician has decided to pursue a career in Male Reproductive Medicine or Andrology, they may choose to apply for a fellowship. In an effort to centralize information on these fellowships, the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology has a list of some of these on their website at: http://www.smru.org/detail.aspx?id=926. There is information about each of the fellowships, including the length (1 or 2 years), approximate research to clinical ratio, and contact information. While many of the available fellowships are listed there, it is not a comprehensive list and the applicant should also inquire with any specialists in Male Reproductive Medicine that they know on a personal level. If potential applicants would like assistance with mentoring, the Andrology Society of American is in the process of developing a mentoring program, and interested trainees should contact them for pairing. At present, most Male Reproductive Medicine and Andrology fellowships have joined a match program, ...
Background: Adolescents are at high risk of adverse reproductive health outcomes, including HIV, other STIs and unwanted pregnancies. However, there is little empirical evidence to guide the choice and implementation of effective interventions. We assessed the impact of an intervention programme on the sexual health of adolescents in rural Tanzania.. Methods: Using data from a prior population-based survey of 9,445 15-19 year olds, 20 communities were stratified and randomly allocated to either receive the new interventions (Intervention Group) or standard interventions (Comparison Group) during Phase 1 (January 1999-December 2001) of the MEMA kwa Vijana Project. The new intervention programme had four major components: community activities; teacher-led, peer-assisted sex education in the last three years of primary school (Years 5-7); training and supervision of health workers to provide youth-friendly STD and family planning services; and peer condom social marketing for youth (from January ...

Improving the lives of youth is critical to local, national, and international development. The needs of youth are complex and therefore broader than any one sector of development. Multisector programs that focus on the whole person are promising for having a greater impact on youth than single-sector approaches. More specifically, theoretical perspectives and evidence from research suggest that two sectors important for encouraging the well-being of youth - workforce development (WfD) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) - are interrelated and mutually supportive. They may therefore lead to better outcomes for youth when integrated within a single youth-focused program. The present study makes recommendations to inform implementation of and research on youth programs that integrate WfD and SRH. We based these recommendations on a systematic, comprehensive review of integrated programs with input from a consultative group of implementers, funders, and researchers. ...
In the previous message, I talked about the negative and positive aspects of assisted reproductive medicine today. In this message, I would like to discuss the wide-ranging impact that in vitro fertilization, the main method of assisted reproductive medicine, is having on regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine generally refers to using cells and genes to artificially create tissues and organs and then transplanting them to regenerate physiological functions in patients. Many people suffer from the loss or failure of tissues or organs as a result of a congenital disorder, illness or accident. While treatment also aims to enhance the innate self-organizing ability of the body to repair systems and organs to normal structure and function, in most cases, it must rely on transplants from donors. With transplants from donors, however, there is the problem of rejection and also a limit to the number of available organs and tissues. Regenerative medicine is one answer to this problem. ...

22 May 2004 , Geneva - The World Health Organizations first strategy on reproductive health was adopted today by the 57th World Health Assembly (WHA). Reproductive and sexual ill-health accounts for 20% of the global burden of ill-health for women, and 14% for men.. The strategy targets five priority aspects of reproductive and sexual health: improving antenatal, delivery, postpartum and newborn care; providing high-quality services for family planning, including infertility services; eliminating unsafe abortion; combating sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, reproductive tract infections, cervical cancer and other gynaecological morbidities; and promoting sexual health.. Unsafe sex is one of the biggest risks to our health today, largely as a result of acquiring sexually-transmitted infections, such as HIV/AIDS. Reproductive and sexual health touches the lives of everyone, everywhere, says Joy Phumaphi, Assistant Director-General of Family and Community Health at WHO. It is ...

With a wide-ranging approach that considers male reproductive health as a whole, this large, cross-sectional and population-based study provides a more complete picture than previous studies of the associations between lifestyle and clinical factors and male reproductive health disorders, notably ED, LUTS, prostate disease (PD) and symptoms of perceived androgen deficiency (pAD). As the first ever national stratified random sample survey of older men, it has provided information on male reproductive health and associated factors that is more robust and generalisable than that from previous smaller clinical cohorts or even large population based studies confined to single cities or regions. The study highlights relationships between a range of reproductive health disorders and general health issues in men that would not be evident when viewing reproductive health problems in isolation.. Associations between ED and lifestyle risk factors similar to those for cardiovascular disease (such as waist ...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare subjects dually diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) to those with only one or none of these conditions regarding helpseeking needs and behaviors. METHOD: Data from a large community sample (N=3694) were used to assess the associations among lifetime PTSD and AUD, other psychiatric disorders, clinical characteristics and lifetime helpseeking behaviors derived from a semi-structured interview. RESULTS: Comorbid individuals had more severe clinical profiles and were more impaired than individuals with either PTSD or AUD alone or those with no/other psychiatric conditions. However, they did not differ in overall helpseeking behavior from any other group. Those with comorbid PTSD/AUD were even less likely than the other groups to seek help for depression and anxiety disorders through specific treatment facilities or the use of prescribed psychotropic drugs. CONCLUSIONS: Despite a greater need for treatment ...
June 5 - MORGANTOWN - The opportunity to have open, pleasant, and timely conversations about womens reproductive health can lead to the treatment or prevention of health problems sooner rather than later, local health professionals say.. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), reproductive health is a term used to denote a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not just the absence of disease or ailment in all matters of the reproductive system and to refer to its functions and health Processes. . The WHO also says that the term implies that individuals engage in satisfactory and safe sexual activities and that they are able to reproduce and determine if, when and how often they do so.. Dr. Ryan Heitmann, Medical Director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine at WVU Medicine, said the term womens reproductive health has a variety of different definitions. It can refer to womens health in general, which encompasses every aspect of a womans wellbeing, or ...
When reviewing the potential impact of sugar intake on female reproductive health, factors to be considered include the various body systems, organs and tissues involved in (either or both) glucose metabolism and reproductive function, and the bidirectional functional relationships between many of them (covered in Part 1). Following on from these interconnections, how sugar can impact these body systems, organs and tissues, both individually and via their functional interconnection, and the clinical relevance of these effects also needs to be considered. This will be covered in Part 2.
The first IUD was reported from Poland in 1909. This intrauterine ring was modified in 1920-30 by a Germany scientist and separately by a Japanese physician in1934. In 1949 another German scientist who had immigrated to the US developed a stainless steel ring IUD.. The U.S. FDA first approved IUDs in 1968 eventually bringing the Lippes Loop, the Tatum-T, The Saf-T-Coil, Gynekoil and Copper 7 to the U.S. market. These IUDs were made with plastic, allowing the IUD to bend for insertion and then regain its shape. These IUDs also had a monofilament nylon string added to facilitate removal. The Lippes Loop, one of the most popular first generation IUDs, was introduced in the mid 1960s. From 1960-1970, 12 million women worldwide had IUDs inserted including 3 million living in the US.. By 1970 there were over 17 IUDs in development worldwide. With the discovery that the addition of a copper band to the IUD increased effectiveness, a new generation of IUDs [Tatum-T and Copper-7] was introduced. ...

Modern life is busy; sometimes people just want a meal that is fast, affordable, and satisfying. This comes at a cost to our health. While fast food is certainly convenient, it is not health food. The effects of the drive-through extend far beyond the waistline, harming your cardiovascular system, kidneys, and more. New research suggests that eating too many cheeseburgers and fries can even increase the chances of male infertility.. According to Austin male infertility specialist Dr. Parviz Kavoussi, male fertility can be caused by a variety of lifestyle-related factors including endocrine or hormonal balance and environmental toxin exposure. A recently published study at George Washington University confirms this, finding that people who eat fast food regularly have higher levels of certain environmental toxins called phthalates, which have been linked to male infertility and a wide range of endocrine disorders. Eating fast food may affect your health in ways no one previously realized.. Fast ...

Pat had been trying to get pregnant for three years using natural family planning techniques. During that time she and her husband had a complete fertility workup and all of the tests were normal. The couple did three unsuccessful intrauterine inseminations (IUIs) yet Pat still did not conceive. Each failed attempt caused more emotional upset. Pat felt hopeless when she was finally diagnosed with unexplained infertility. In an effort to relax, she went to the Lake Austin Spa where she learned about a fertility retreat with Radine Lewis, PhD, licensed acupuncturist and author of The Infertility Cure: The Ancient Chinese Wellness Program for Getting Pregnant and Having Healthy Babies. She attended the next retreat and learned the important role that stress, emotional upset and diet had on reproduction. Pat decided that before she tried again to conceive, she would work on getting her body healthy. She and her husband began traditional Chinese medicine treatments with Sarai Stapleton, Master of ...

Women with PCOS have three characteristic symptoms. Women are diagnosed with PCOS when they have at least two of these three symptoms: irregular periods, excess androgens - either measured in the blood or seen through symptoms such as acne or excess hair growth - and polycystic ovaries seen on ultrasound.. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome may have irregular periods. They may only have 6-8 periods per year. They may get their period every month for a few months and then skip a month or two or they may go many months without having a period. Many women with PCOS will have infertility associated with their irregular menses. Also, when women with PCOS do become pregnant, they have an increased rate of miscarriage.. Another common feature of polycystic ovarian syndrome is acne or oily skin. Acne may occur over the face but may also be found over the back or chest. This is due to relatively higher levels of a hormone called testosterone circulating in the bloodstream of women with PCOS. ...

Is it safe to resume treatment?:. At present there is limited experience of Covid-19 during pregnancy, however current information from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology suggests that the severity of infection is no worse during pregnancy than in other healthy adults. At this stage, there is no evidence of an increased risk of miscarriage, fetal anomalies or adverse pregnancy complications. However, the risk to individual patients will vary depending on their clinical situation, risk profile, and the likely persistence of the virus within their local community. Please be aware that other pregnancy care policies may also be different during the Covid-19 crisis. It is your decision whether to proceed with treatment or not and a record will be made in your notes.. Patient triage and testing:.
