Background Progress toward meeting Millennium Development Goal 5, which aims to improve maternal and reproductive health outcomes, is behind schedule. This is despite ever increasing volumes of official development aid targeting the goal, calling into question the distribution and efficacy of aid. The 2005 Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness represented a global commitment to reform aid practices in order to improve development outcomes, encouraging a shift toward collaborative aid arrangements which support the national plans of aid recipient countries (and discouraging unaligned donor projects). Methods and Findings We conducted a systematic review to summarise the evidence of the impact on MDG 5 outcomes of official development aid delivered in line with Paris aid effectiveness principles and to compare this with the impact of aid in general on MDG 5 outcomes. Searches of electronic databases identified 30 studies reporting aid-funded interventions designed to improve maternal and reproductive
The policy and program discourse related to early marriage (i.e., marriage before age 18) has increased significantly in India during the past decade.
Specific objectives of the RURHS11 were: to assess current levels and trends in fertility, abortion, contraception, and various other reproductive health indicators; to enable policy makers, program managers, and researchers to evaluate existing reproductive health programs and develop new strategies; to study factors that affect fertility, contraceptive use, and maternal and infant health, such as geographic and sociodemographic factors, breastfeeding patterns, use of induced abortion, and availability of family planning services; to identify characteristics of women at increased risk of unintended pregnancy;  to identify subgroups at high risk for adverse reproductive health outcomes and help develop targeted interventions; to obtain data on the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of young adults aged 15-24 years; to provide data on the level of reported sexually transmitted infection (STI) symptoms and knowledge about transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS.
22 May 2004 , Geneva - The World Health Organizations first strategy on reproductive health was adopted today by the 57th World Health Assembly (WHA). Reproductive and sexual ill-health accounts for 20% of the global burden of ill-health for women, and 14% for men.. The strategy targets five priority aspects of reproductive and sexual health: improving antenatal, delivery, postpartum and newborn care; providing high-quality services for family planning, including infertility services; eliminating unsafe abortion; combating sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, reproductive tract infections, cervical cancer and other gynaecological morbidities; and promoting sexual health.. Unsafe sex is one of the biggest risks to our health today, largely as a result of acquiring sexually-transmitted infections, such as HIV/AIDS. Reproductive and sexual health touches the lives of everyone, everywhere, says Joy Phumaphi, Assistant Director-General of Family and Community Health at WHO. It is ...
Background Sexual health promotion is central to the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and to achieving the targets of the NSW HIV Strategy 2012-2015 and the forthcoming NSW STI Plan.. In NSW sexual health promotion targeting young people is delivered by local health district HIV and Related Programs (HARP) Units, non-government organisations and state-wide services. In the past state level leadership and coordination of sexual health promotion has been limited, consequently many services have been working in isolation and delivering small scale programs with limited evaluation. ...

In 2008, the National Institute launched the Urban Initiative for Reproductive Health to support local advocacy for reproductive health, rights, and justice. At the time, not many advocacy efforts focused on the local level, despite the robust possibilities for cities and counties to improve reproductive health outcomes.. Through the Urban Initiative, weve provided funding and strategic technical assistance to support dynamic, forward-looking local organizations that want to improve reproductive health in their communities. We also give our local partners the space to connect with each other and with national organizations to share resources, brainstorm solutions to challenges, and evaluate new ideas and strategies.. The Urban Initiative has provided more than a million dollars in funding to 58 organizations in 24 states and the District of Columbia, and sustained a robust network that now connects hundreds of advocates, elected leaders, and public health officials across the country. Oral contraceptives (OCs) are one of the most widely used and effective methods of birth control available worldwide. They are one of the best-studied and safest medications on the market today, yet in most of North America and Western Europe a prescription is required to obtain them. This can be a barrier for some women seeking birth control, particularly those without easy access to a clinician.. To address this barrier, ANSIRH participates in the Oral Contraceptives (OCs) Over-the-Counter (OTC) Working Group, which leverages research and advocacy efforts to advance evidence-based policy with the aim of improving access to contraception and reducing disparities in reproductive health outcomes by making a low-cost OC product available OTC in the United States. The working group is currently focused on a progestin-only pill, as the first OTC OC product.. Convened by Ibis Reproductive Health, the OCs OTC Working Group is a coalition of reproductive health, justice, and rights organizations, ...

With a wide-ranging approach that considers male reproductive health as a whole, this large, cross-sectional and population-based study provides a more complete picture than previous studies of the associations between lifestyle and clinical factors and male reproductive health disorders, notably ED, LUTS, prostate disease (PD) and symptoms of perceived androgen deficiency (pAD). As the first ever national stratified random sample survey of older men, it has provided information on male reproductive health and associated factors that is more robust and generalisable than that from previous smaller clinical cohorts or even large population based studies confined to single cities or regions. The study highlights relationships between a range of reproductive health disorders and general health issues in men that would not be evident when viewing reproductive health problems in isolation.. Associations between ED and lifestyle risk factors similar to those for cardiovascular disease (such as waist ...
Over the past five months, I have been investigating reproductive health outcomes among migrant women in Tapachula as a window into how broader social and politico-economic processes, such as normative gender regimes and migration policy, affect womens lived and embodied experiences of displacement. To this end, I have conducted semi-structured interviews, surveys and archival research, and countless hours of participant observation in various sites, including the public hospital and health clinics, migrant shelters, and womens private homes. I have come to understand that for many migrants, the southern Mexico border is much more than the fast-paced transit zone so often presented in popular accounts: a fleeting countryside as migrants board the notorious cargo train, La Bestia [the Beast], or move from one humanitarian shelter to the next. Rather, for many it becomes a way of life within a parenthetic space of prolonged immobility and legal liminality that can extend for months, even ...
Our Global Programs support organizations in low and middle income countries that work to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes for youth, women, and overlooked groups.
The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a collection of various metabolic, hormonal and immunological risk factors that cluster together, closely related to poorly understood phenomena such a hyperinsulinaemia (insulin resistance), hyperleptinaemia (leptin resistance), a low grade, systemic and chronic inflammation and, in males, hypogonadism. Infertility is increasing globally, and male factor infertility accounts for a large percentage of couples who are not able to conceive. The relationship between components of MetS and male reproductive health is not clear, and requires further investigation, as does the impact of MetS on male reproductive health in a case controlled study. The impact of hyperinsulinaemia, hyperleptinaemia and inflammatory cytokines on the male reproductive tract also requires investigation. Furthermore, it is hypothesised that these phenomena negatively impact steroidogenesis cascades. In order to investigate this, a case controlled study and TM3 Leydig cell culture experiments ...
When reviewing the potential impact of sugar intake on female reproductive health, factors to be considered include the various body systems, organs and tissues involved in (either or both) glucose metabolism and reproductive function, and the bidirectional functional relationships between many of them (covered in Part 1). Following on from these interconnections, how sugar can impact these body systems, organs and tissues, both individually and via their functional interconnection, and the clinical relevance of these effects also needs to be considered. This will be covered in Part 2.

Many CRDSI researchers being part of the Faculty of Medicine, a lot of their research focuses on reproductive health. On the male side, it is testicular functions and the mechanisms leading to the production of spermatozoa with fertilizing power that are the main focus. The study of these mechanisms is closely linked to the causes of male infertility and in fact, many researchers such as Robert Sullivan, François Richard and Clémence Bellannée, work at identifying markers for sperm quality or non-invasive markers for the diagnostic of dysfunction associated with male infertility. On the female side, the work of Marc-André Sirard and François Richard on folliculogenesis are a staple in the field. Researchers associated with the Faculty of agriculture also regularly tackle human reproductive health related research themes.. Our project draws inspiration from an international enterprise highlighting the connection between overall research quality and the presence of gender-related questions and methods. The Gendered Innovations project - and its gorgeous website - offer several careful examples that could lead us to this conclusion.. Some of the easier cases come from medicine; Ive written before about research on heart disease and osteoporosis (Your heart and my back: 2 examples of gender-enhanced science). Other cases come from engineering, where one example shows us that seatbelt designs that are better for everyone emerge from including gender or sex as a design issue (Pregnant crash test dummies).. At the Gendered Innovations site, new examples continue to appear. We can learn how gendered approaches to research give better results overall, ranging from our understanding of the effects of environmental chemicals on reproductive health to the design of video games.. We also learn that this work has to be ...

This article is contributed by the COBRE for Reproductive Health. The programmatic and scientific goals of this COBRE support a multidisciplinary, translational, and innovative program in womens reproductive health. The research projects focus on using pre-clinical and human models to understand mechanisms of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, IVF pregnancies, and the application of contemporary computational approaches to identify the networks and pathways underlying these devastating pregnancy complications. We discuss how novel observations emanating from the preeclampsia project can be leveraged to understand chronic diseases such as Alzheimers disease (AD). Proteinopathy is a hallmark feature of neurodegenerative disorders such as AD. We recently reported that preeclampsia (PE), a severe pregnancy…. ...
