Direct instruction is a method of delivering specific pieces of curriculum. Common Core standards are descriptions of goals (what students should know/be able to do once the instruction is completed). In theory, direct instruction of various kinds (not just Direct Instruction, the well-defined instructional methods designed by Engelmann and others) can help schools attain those goals more efficiently (I happen to be a believer). But the Common Core standards themselves do not dictate instructional methods except by implication -- for example, its pretty easy to imagine that in order for students to learn how to do close reading, they will have to actually do some close reading, and the teachers will have to do some lecture/demonstration to illustrate how its done. ...
Cognitive impairment is a symptom of schizophrenia and strongly associated with impaired social function. In recent years, cognitive interventions (cognitive remediation therapies) have been implemented and their results have also been reported. Intervention studies have been conducted using a variety of methods that differ in terms of terminology, approach, and targeted cognitive domains. In this study, we examined trends in recent cognitive remediation research conducted subsequent to the meta-analyses of McGurk et al. (2007) and Wykes et al. (2011). We identified studies conducted between 2009 and 2013 to examine computer-assisted cognitive remediation and collated and analyzed the literature describing their major results and trends. Our results indicated improved cognitive performance subsequent to cognitive remediation therapy using computer programs. We found promising outcomes, particularly in reasoning and problem solving, verbal learning and memory, verbal working memory, and attention and
The individual and societal cost of alcohol use disorders (TUAL), present in 10% of the population in France, is considerable. Despite psychotherapeutic and drug addiction treatment, the relapse rate remains very high, partly because of their very frequent cognitive disorders. In fact, more than 75% of TUAL patients present to varying degrees neuropsychological alterations that are only rarely detected and never treated. However, these cognitive disorders limit the benefit of psychotherapeutic care, reduce compliance with pharmacological treatments and hinder the patients ability to change his behavior with respect to alcohol. An innovative way to promote the maintenance of the therapeutic contract, and therefore to reduce alcohol consumption in these patients, would be to improve their cognitive functioning. The objective of this study is to measure the efficacy of a non-drug treatment, based on a specific and personalized cognitive remediation program, compared to a standard treatment in Day ...
This study, randomized, open, controlled with schizophrenia-standard-care, is aimed to determine structural and functional brain changes associated to cognitive remediation and physical exercise in schizophrenia.. The study participants will be enrolled in the catchment area of the Hospital Psiquiatrico de Alava, in the province of Alava, Basque Region, Northern Spain.147 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia will be randomly assigned to Cognitive Training Group or Aerobic Exercise Group or a Control Group for a five-month period.. Both Cognitive Training Group patients and Aerobic Exercise Group patients will participate in training sessions of 60 min/d, 3 d/wk. Patients assigned to Control Group will receive the standard care for schizophrenia in this area plus occupational activities for the same duration and frequency than the two experimental groups.. Cognitive Training will be implemented through REHACOP, a cognitive remediation program for Spanish speaking patients with schizophrenia ...

When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, the parents lives can go into chaos," said Compas, who also serves as professor of pediatrics and is an investigator at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. "They are only focused on if their child is going to survive. In our work, we often meet with families within hours of the diagnosis. We evaluate the childs cognitive ability and work with the surgical and medical teams to come up with treatment and interventions that offer the best cognitive outcome. Its a remarkable partnership.". Compas directs a team of researchers at the Vanderbilt Stress and Coping Research Lab who work with children and families struggling with a broad range of difficulties that can interfere with cognitive function, from depression to abuse to a cancer diagnosis. In longitudinal studies, he and his team have found that methods based in cognitive behavioral therapy and computer-based cognitive remediation programs are effective in equalizing the debilitating ...
Cognitive remediation refers to nonpharmacological methods of improving cognitive function in people with severe mental disorders. Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) can be delivered via computerised programs, of varying length and complexity, or can be undertaken one-on-one by a trained clinician. There has been a considerable interest in cognitive remediation, driven by recognition that cognitive deficits are a major determinant of outcome in people with severe, chronic mental illnesses. CRT has been shown to be effective, especially if combined with vocational rehabilitation.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in achievement between a group of students being taught reading, mathematics, and language using Direct Instruction and those students being taught using the traditional program. The Direct Instruction Program is defined as a model program written by Siegfried Engelmann which provides a script, correction methods, and signals. The traditional program is defined as the conventional instruction methods that have been used through the years in which all levels work together, individually, or competitively toward stated goals. The subjects of this study were from two elementary schools in the same district. Test data from the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) were compiled to compare the success of programs used. The socioeconomic status of the subjects was obtained to see if it influenced the students achievement. The students were administered the Piers-Harris Childrens Self-Concept Scale. The study showed that the 5-year Direct
This new study on brain balance is a pilot study, the kind of study whose results are not intended to guide clinical decisions but only to direct future research. They didnt even bother to use a control group. They took 122 children with diagnosed ADHD and submitted them to what they call "a hemisphere specific remediation program." The rationale for the study was flimsy. They speculate that ADHD is related to a "functional dysconnectivity," hemispheric imbalance, subcortical dysfunction, a lack of temporal coherence, and a difference in arousal level between the hemispheres. They provide no evidence that these are characteristic of ADHD or were present in their subjects, or that their treatments specifically changed any of them. They assumed an underactive right hemisphere (it was not clear why) and they provided interventions that they assumed (without any supporting evidence) ought to remedy the alleged imbalance. They tested for the childs specific deficits and provided tailored ...
BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- In an ongoing effort to educate residents about the possible build up of lead in old homes, and ways to reduce exposure, Bloomfield Mayor Michael Venezia and the Township Council are hosting a Community Public Forum on Monday, February 25 beginning at 6:00pm in the Council Chambers on the second floor of Town Hall. Health officers in the Health Department, and the Township Engineer will be on hand to discuss the Townships Lead Remediation Program, through which residents can obtain test sample testing kits, and PUR water filters for free.. Water testing by Bloomfield has found several homes that exceed lead standards. While there is no finding of lead in the general water system, excess lead has been found in older homes.. Many homes where plumbing has not been renovated since 1986 have lead-coated faucets. The Health and Human Services Department and Township Engineer Paul Lasek recently joined the Mayor, Council and Township Administrator at a public forum aimed at sharing ...

ABA therapy includes many different "techniques". It is important to note that an effective ABA intervention is not a "cookie cutter" approach, and should never be presented as a "one size fits all" program. Rather, skilled therapists customize each childs program to build upon that childs individual needs, skills, and interests. Some common methods that may be used in combination or alone include: Direct Instruction, Discrete Trial Training (DTT), Incidental Teaching/Natural Environment Training (NET), Verbal Behavior Training, and group/peer social skills training. ABA therapy is focused on the use of positive reinforcement strategies. These strategies may be used to increase language and communication, improve attention, focus, social skills, memory, and academics.. ...
Individuals who suffer from chronic mental disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, often experience cognitive deficits. For example, they may have difficulty with attention, memory, processing speed, abstract reasoning, and problem solving, among others. Cognitive remediation is an evidence-based behavioral treatment for people who are experiencing cognitive impairments that interfere with daily functioning.
Cupertino Put cash in people,. not school testing. No teacher would disagree that identifying students needing intervention early in their education is essential (Editorial, June 8). Most teachers can identify those children within the first month of the school year, without ever looking at test scores. The real focus needs to be on intervention programs, which are often cut back by districts. How does one resource specialist, one speech and language therapist and one part-time educational psychologist work all day with students and find time to evaluate and test identified intervention students for a school of 600 children? How can one or two nurses be expected to cover the health needs of an entire district? How does one part-time counselor meet the needs of students requiring emotional support because their unstable home lives are affecting their learning? How do we provide reading intervention when we dont have a reading intervention teacher? Instead of worrying about the $2.4 million to ...

Data on Joses math difficulties was collected from district assessments, curriculum based assessments, and weekly quizzes. Jose can read, write, and compare numbers to 100. He can skip count by 5s and 10s to 100 and perform addition and subtraction of double-digit numbers without regrouping. Jose has difficulty performing addition or subtraction of double-digit numbers with regrouping. He also shows difficulty with multiplication facts (accuracy and fluency) and solving grade level word problems. These difficulties require direct instruction in skills so that Jose can access the grade level curriculum ...
SYLVESTER: Now hear is the issue, Wolf, there is a woman named Edith OBrien. She was the treasurer at MF Global and she said that there was an e-mail from October 28th, and this is a direct quote, "per J.C.s direct instructions," shes referring to Jon Corzine and that those instructions were to transfer $200 million from a segregated customer account -- this is customer money were talking about -- to JPMorgan in London to cover MF Globals losses. And this would be huge because for one theres always been the question of exactly how did this money from MF Global, this customer money -- how did it go missing and who was it at MF Global who actually gave the OK? Because as we all know that its been a bedrock of -- really of finance that you always keep your customer money separate from your company money. Well, we know in the case of MF Global that that did not happen. Now the question was, who was responsible? And, you know, were going to have a situation, I think, of a he says/she says ...
There are, on the internet, numerous lists categorising progressivism and traditionalism. Mostly they are wrong for one simple reason, the dividing line between the two is not pedagogical but philosophical. You can use direct instruction in both approaches but in different ways and for different reasons. It is not only how it is taught but…
Maybe its just semantics, but someone claiming they felt called by God to lead the nation is not nearly as disturbing as saying God told me to strike... The former I read as a general statement of their religion, and their belief that they were placed on earth for a reason -- a religious president might feel he was called by a higher power to lead the nation, while a hip hop artist might feel he was called by a higher power to create music. The latter, however, I read as claiming a direct instruction from God. I find it hard to believe that Bush would have made that claim at all, let alone to the Palestinian Prime Minister, but maybe Im just naive ...
By Marion Scher. When thirteen year old Mark* didnt want to go to school one day his mother Viv* wasnt really worried. But when he didnt want to go the next day and the one after that she felt something was wrong. When she questioned the school she found he wasnt coping so well with his maths and reading and the teachers suggested extra lessons. "It actually turned out that he needed remedial teaching in almost every subject," explains Viv. "What was so sad was that the happy, excited, new learner turned into an unhappy introverted little boy who dreaded going to school.". What eventually brought the decision to a head was when the school asked to see Viv and told her they would like Mark to repeat Grade 8 again. Marks reaction to this idea was one of total devastation. "Ill never forget the look on his face - if he still had any belief in himself this totally crushed it.". Mark was put on anti-depressants, which together with therapy and a new school saw him turn into a bright, confident ...

Case studies have shown that radon gas can accumulate within domestic properties at sufficiently high levels that it can cause lung cancer, and recent studies have suggested that this risk remains significant below the UK domestic Action Level of 200 Bq m−3. Raised radon levels can be reduced by engineering measures, and it has been shown that domestic radon remediation programmes in UK Affected Areas can result in reduced risks to the population and can be cost-effective. We consider here the benefits and costs of the domestic radon remediation programme in Northamptonshire, UK, and consider the implications for that programme of reducing the UK Action Level below its present value. A radon remediation programme based on an Action Level above 200 Bq m−3 will cost less and will target those most at risk, but will be less cost-effective and will lead to higher residual dose and greater risk of cancer in the remaining population. Reducing the Action Level below 200 Bq m−3 will prevent more ...

INTRODUCTION: The primary objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of remediation, competency domains for remediation, the length, and success rates of remediation in emergency medicine (EM). METHODS: We developed the survey in Surveymonkey with attention to content and response process validity. EM program directors responded how many residents had been placed on remediation in the last three years. Details regarding the remediation were collected including indication, length and success. We reported descriptive data and estimated a multinomial logistic regression model. RESULTS: We obtained 126/158 responses (79.7%). Ninety percent of programs had at least one resident on remediation in the last three years. The prevalence of remediation was 4.4%. Indications for remediation ranged from difficulties with one core competency to all six competencies (mean 1.9). The most common were medical knowledge (MK) (63.1% of residents), patient care (46.6%) and professionalism (31.5%). Mean length
p,,b,OBJECTIVE: ,/b,Cognitive remediation therapy for schizophrenia was developed to treat cognitive problems that affect functioning, but the treatment effects may depend on the type of trial methodology adopted. The present meta-analysis will determine the effects of treatment and whether study method or potential moderators influence the estimates.,/p,,p,,b,METHOD: ,/b,Electronic databases were searched up to June 2009 using variants of the key words cognitive, training, remediation, clinical trial, and schizophrenia. Key researchers were contacted to ensure that all studies meeting the criteria were included. This produced 109 reports of 40 studies in which ≥70% of participants had a diagnosis of schizophrenia, all of whom received standard care. There was a comparison group and allocation procedure in these studies. Data were available to calculate effect sizes on cognition and/or functioning. Data were independently extracted by two reviewers with excellent reliability. ...

My daughter will be in a self contained autism (low/non-verbal, high behaviours) classroom this fall. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this class because, although it does meet her behavioural needs/communication challenges, the focus is mostly life skills. Life skills are good but communication/functional academics are really our focus at this stage (her life skills are fairly decent). We home-schooled before this, with good success, using a combination of ABA strategies (not as farmwife2 paints it), natural environment teaching, art based activities(which she loves), direct instruction (for functional acedemics), visual schedules, life skills, play based learning and any thing else that grabbed her attention. It was exhausting but clearly successful. I dont expect her progress to be as fast in the new classroom (as it was 1:1 at home) but its WAY better than an inclusive setting would be. In the self-contained room they have the structure, flexibility and staff that just arnt ...
The TEM (Twente Education Model; in Dutch: Twents Onderwijsmodel or TOM) is characterized by the integration of project-led education (PLE) and other teaching methods in thematic fulltime study units - i.e. modules. A project is at the centre of each module. By programming the other module components around these projects, an integrated complex is created. Students learning needs are primarily driven by the project, in which they can also apply knowledge gained from the other module components. In a module various components are logically clustered around one central subject or theme. Different disciplines can meet within one theme. For example, a realistic assignment given to a group of students may presuppose a certain degree of knowledge from various disciplines. The group then acquires this knowledge as independently as possible, albeit under tutor supervision. Some knowledge may also be offered in direct instruction, but only if there is a specific reason to do so. This might be the case ...
Biology I focuses on the mastery of basic biological concepts and models while building scientific inquiry skills and exploring the connections between living things and their environment.. The course begins with an introduction to the nature of science and biology, including the major themes of structure and function, matter and energy flow, systems, and the interconnectedness of life. Students then apply those themes to the structure and function of the cell, cellular metabolism, and biogeochemical cycles. Building on this foundation, students explore the connections and interactions between living things by studying genetics, ecosystems and natural selection, and evolution. The course ends with an applied look at human biology.. Scientific inquiry skills are embedded in the direct instruction, wherein students learn to ask scientific questions, form and test hypotheses, and use logic and evidence to draw conclusions about the concepts.. Lab activities reinforce critical thinking, writing, and ...
