An interesting conjunction of variables from the folks at Northwestern Universitys School of Medicine: Religious participation is correlated with obesity.. Could it be the potato salad? Young adults who frequently attend religious activities are 50 percent more likely to become obese by middle age then are young adults with no religious involvement, according to new Northwestern Medicine research. This is the first longitudinal study to examine the development of obesity in people with various degrees of religious involvement.. We dont know why frequent religious participation is associated with development of obesity, but the upshot is these findings highlight a group that could benefit from targeted efforts at obesity prevention, said Matthew Feinstein, the studys lead investigator… Its possible that getting together once a week and associating good works and happiness with eating unhealthy foods could lead to the development of habits that are associated with greater body weight and ...
RNS) The latest in a long line of studies, now numbering in the hundreds, if not thousands, shows that church attendance is good for your health.. Published in May by researchers from Vanderbilt University, the study found that middle-aged adults who attended religious services at least once in the past year were half as likely to die prematurely as those who didnt.. Using data from a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the studys researchers examined 10 biological stress markers among 5,449 men and women aged 46 to 65. They then compared those markers with respondents self-reported religious service attendance and found a correlation between religious service attendance, lower stress and longevity.. The study adds to mounting scientific findings on the subject. A far larger study, of 74,534 women, published last year found that attending a religious service more than once per week was associated with 33 percent lower ...
Spirituality & Religion. The Third Age can be an especially contemplative one-a period of life when older adults may switch gears from focusing the day-to-day concerns of living, such as career and parenting, to contemplating the larger issues of life and pursuing a desire to give back. What part does spirituality play in mental health and well-being? What about its impact upon physical health? Where (and whom) do people turn to at the end of life and who is smoothing the way? What about caregivers: what can help them cope? Baby boomers may eschew religious houses of worship and other traditional spiritual paths and practices, but theyre known as seekers, so what will their Third Age portend, spiritually? ASA offers the latest thinking and an active constituency group, our Forum on Religion, Spirituality and Aging, providing thoughtful and provocative articles on this topic area.. Recommended. This prospective study uses data from the Nurses Health Study to evaluate associations between attendance at religious services and mortality in women.
The Brief RCOPE is a 14-item measure of religious coping with major life stressors. As the most commonly used measure of religious coping in the literature, it has helped contribute to the growth of knowledge about the roles religion serves in the process of dealing with crisis, trauma, and transition. This paper reports on the development of the Brief RCOPE and its psychometric status. The scale developed out of Pargaments (1997) program of theory and research on religious coping. The items themselves were generated through interviews with people experiencing major life stressors. Two overarching forms of religious coping, positive and negative, were articulated through factor analysis of the full RCOPE. Positive religious coping methods reflect a secure relationship with a transcendent force, a sense of spiritual connectedness with others, and a benevolent world view. Negative religious coping methods reflect underlying spiritual tensions and struggles within oneself, with others, and with the divine
Not counting weddings and funerals, 38 percent of Americans say they go to religious services at least once a week. But there are big differences across demographic groups, with self-reported attendance peaking among older people, women, Southerners and Baptists, among others.. The biggest gap is between the oldest and youngest age groups. Sixty percent of people age 65 and older report attending religious services at least once a week; among 18 to 30-year-olds, just 28 percent go that often. Previous ABC News polls, similarly, have found that religious belief and practice increase with age.. There are other factors. Nearly half of Southerners attend services weekly, substantially more than elsewhere. Forty-four percent of women go weekly, compared to 32 percent of men. It follows that, among Southern women age 45 and up, weekly church attendance soars to 68 percent.. Forty-seven percent of Republicans attend church regularly, compared to 38 percent of Democrats and 29 percent of independents. ...
It seems like most people I know dont seem to attend any type of religious services. We attend church, not every weekend, but pretty regularly. Were trying to pick godparents for our youngest and it has turned into an act of Congress since no one seems to be active or even attend church. It got me a little curious if others attend church/ mosque/ synagogue/ etc. Also if you dont me asking, what religion? ETA: I consider any type of belief (such as pagan, wiccan, etc) as a religious belief. So if you attend any sort of group regularly, that would count in my book.
Obesity appears to be more common in people who participate in religious-based events at least once a week during young adulthood, according to research presented at the American Heart Associations Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism/Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention 2011 Scientific Sessions, held from March 22 to 25 in Atlanta.

Four studies on the beliefs and clinical practices of psychiatrists in the UK, Canada and the USA have examined representative samples. In a study of British psychiatrists, Neeleman & King (1993) surveyed 231 psychiatrists at general and psychiatric hospitals in London: three-quarters (73%) of psychiatrists reported no religious affiliation (50% atheist or agnostic), 28% believed in God, and 22% attended religious services at least once a month. However, 92% believed that religion and mental illness were connected and that religious issues should be addressed in treatment, and while 42% believed religiousness could lead to mental illness, 61% said that it could protect against mental illness. With regard to psychiatrists practices, 48% said they often or always asked about the religious beliefs of patients, but two-thirds (66%) rarely or never made referrals to clergy.. A second and more recent study of British psychiatrists (Lawrence et al, 2007) focused on those working in old age psychiatry. ...
I would like to see if the number of people who are both atheist and attend church once a week correlate with the overall numbers of attend church once a week. That is, in states with high church attendance, if there are more atheists who also attend church than dont. I highly suspect that would be the case.. you have the will? here is the way ...
One of the most thoroughly researched areas of mental illness in the context of its association with religiosity is depression. The thrust of studies published over the last century found religious/spiritual factors to be generally associated with lower rates of depression. The majority of studies on religion and depression have been cross-sectional. The primary aims of this study are to investigate the relationship between religiosity and depression longitudinally, utilizing a 10-year follow-up, and to explore the potential differential impact of religiosity on the prevalence of depression in those at high versus low risk for depression. Results suggest that 1) prospectively, a personal importance of religion is protective against MDD over a 10-year period; 2) prospectively, there exists a differential effect of religious belief on MDD in individuals at high versus low risk for depression; 3) prospectively, the protective effect of religious/spiritual importance against MDD is exclusive to individuals
More will be said at a later stage regarding Habermas views on religions contributions to democratic societies. According to this first definition, South Africa fits the mould. Not only does the South African Constitution (Republic of South Africa 1996) make space for freedom of religion, freedom of expression and freedom of association, but the nations formal symbols include the notion of religious participation in the building of the South African democratic project. The national anthem, for instance, starts with an invocation: Nkosi sikelel iAfrika, meaning God bless Africa. In my view, the value of the South African Constitution is that it goes to great lengths to define and defend the rights of not only minority groups and individuals, but includes as far as possible a great array of communities who, at face value, may have differing perspectives when it comes to issues of beliefs or convictions.5 The South African democratic project recognises the unique contributions of all its ...
In order to fix the decline in church attendance due to the pandemic, should we go back to old traditions for the sake of saving brick and mortars or just find ways to progressively praise the Lord in this new era?
This data set offers information on Americans opinions about the role of the arts relative to religion. The study was designed by Princeton University professor Robert Wuthnow and conducted by the Gallup Organization in Princeton, New Jersey. Respondents were asked questions about their creative and arts-related activities, their attitudes toward the arts, their religious activities, behaviors, beliefs and affiliations, their spiritual (or uplifting ) experiences, their attitudes toward religion and spirituality, and their involvement in charitable activities.
The religion-science debate has heated up in recent years, with polemical arguments on both side decrying the other. Given that the dominant view is of religiousness as a relatively fixed personality trait, all of this furor seems excessive. Interested in just how malleable religiousness is, we exposed half of our participants to an argument against the existence of God by Richard Dawkins. Those exposed to Dawkins' arguments showed lower self-reported religiousness, as well as less implicit association between religion and truth. These results demonstrate the flexibility of trait religiousness.

The case, EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc., involved an applicants rejection because she wore a hijab, which conflicted with the employers look policy. The EEOC found that the applicants rejection was religious discrimination and brought suit on behalf of the applicant. The EEOC took the position that an applicants wearing of a hijab was sufficient notice to trigger the employers religious accommodation obligations. The Tenth Circuit disagreed. Consistent with the trend identified above, the employee was not allowed to assume that the employer should have known. Rather, the Tenth Circuit held that, in general, Title VII requires that an employee communicate the conflict between a religious practice (a uniquely personal issue) and a work rule. The Court observed that only the employee or applicant knows whether the practice observed by the employer is grounded in an inflexible religious practice or is being done for cultural or other reasons not grounded in religion.. So, in ...

In the wake of Devin Kelleys mass murder in Sutherland Springs, a meme has sprung up on the Left: ridiculing those who say their thoughts and prayers are with the dead and wounded and their families. A study of 718 people in the U.S. looked into the links between religious activity and mental illness. The researchers found differences between men and women. Out of the 278 women who participated in the study 39% had always been religiously active whilst 51% had not been active since childhood. About 7% of the women who had always been religiously active met the criteria for generalized anxiety disorder compared to 21% of women who had stopped being religiously active. However, men who had stopped going to church were less likely to suffer from depression compared to men who were still religiously active ...
For many, religious activity changes between childhood and adulthood, and a new study finds this could affect ones mental health.

Females 18 -25, N = 886. My last post reported a positive correlation between church attendance and celibacy for both young men and women (ages 18-25). The question of whether religiosity has any influence on ones behavior interests me, so I wanted to look at the relationship a little more closely and generated the top two graphs displayed above. We see that, for both men and women, going to church nearly every week, if not more often, is associated with a greater likelihood of celibacy (celibates are the red sections of the bar graph) . To be specific, 34% of young men who attend more than once a week are celibate, compared to 12% of those who never go. For women, the respective numbers are 26% and 10%. So, we see a connection between religiosity and sex, but how about some other domain of morality, say, crime. The bottom two graphs show the relatioship between attending services and being arrested at least once for a crime. The same kind of pattern holds here. For men, 43% of those who never ...
In this paper, Monika Schrimpf raises the question how in contemporary Japan religious actors offering therapeutic practices can legitimize their actions and position themselves in Japanese society. By choosing the example of a Nichiren-Buddhist priest and a new religion called Perfect Liberty Kyodan, two strategies of legitimizing and positioning therapeutic practices in the religious field are described: the scientification of religious practice, and code-switching between the semantic fields of medicine and religion ...

The Numbers Game: Part II. IN THE LAST ISSUE of New Directions I dedicated this column to looking at the newly available statistics on church attendance in the CofE. You will recall that these had been released suddenly and without warning after two years suppression, just in time for the November Synod timetable to be too late to include any questions about them and to allow debates about future evangelism strategy to go on as if they did not exist.. Many observers of the CofE plc information unit were puzzled by the sudden reversal of policy implied by their publication. Was this a new and voluntary openness, a different approach to the press and to the ordinary punters who pay the bills?. Well, not quite. Learning from the frenzied spin machine that has taken the place of parliamentary government, the new CofE was simply putting its own spin on the bad news before someone else published the full facts.. The someone, in this case, was Christian Research UK who, over a number of years, have ...

Canadian Catholic News. OTTAWA - Canadas Catholic bishops say removing a section of the Criminal Code protecting clergy and religious services from obstruction would send a disturbing message.. More than ever we need to legislate protection for religious services taking place, Cardinal Thomas Collins of Toronto told the House of Commons Justice Committee Oct. 30 via video-conferencing.. The cardinal said the bishops wished to convey our grave concern over Bill C-51s removal of section 176 from the Criminal Code that makes it an indictable offense to threaten or obstruct clergymen or ministers from celebrating services or going about their work.. Its removal would send a disturbing message from Parliament to all religious communities, the Cardinal said.. We believe attacks on religion are not like other attacks against public safety - they are not only more grave but threaten the essence of democracy itself, said the president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop ...

This ex post facto study aims to investigate the influence of religious practice on the types of reaction to situations of offence. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to evaluate the relationship between religious practice and the attitudes towards offenders. The study was carried out with adolescents and young people of both sexes. The sample comprised 673 male and female, with an average age of 18.28 and standard desviation of 1.21. As regards the religion that they practiced: 555 were catholic (82.5%) 39 were evangelical (5.8%) and others 79 (11.7%). To assess the level of religious practice, a grid with items containing the frequency of religious practice was prepared, taking into account the persons self perception. The second instrument used was the Attitudes Towards Offenders Questionnaire (ATOQ). This instrument consists of seven scales, grouped into three factors: passive, aggressive and prosocial behavior, corresponding to the different responses to
This is how quickly it happened. There was the black nonprofit worker who attended a Christian conference in the rural Southeast, where she had to walk past white men staring her down from pickup trucks draped in confederate flags; there was the Indo-Latinx therapist who saw white Christians co-opt practices from other cultures, such as drumming or yoga, while erasing and demonizing the people they came from; and then there was me, the Chinese-American journalist who spoke at a Virginia Christian college where a white man verbally attacked and followed me prompting the provost to hide me in a secured room.. Although smoking shows a strong negative association with religiousness, no studies have appeared of use of smokeless tobacco (ST) and religiousness. To assess an association of use of ST and religiousness, data from 9,374 men aged 17 years and over with complete data on self-reported frequency of attendance at religious services and use of smokeless tobacco were analyzed. Among men aged 17-29 years, 4.9% of frequent attenders (|=24 times/y) and 9.4% of others (
New research provides evidence that college men who frequently participant in religious activities are less likely to engage in sexually aggressive and coercive behaviors. The findings appear in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion.. Sexual aggression is a problem on college campuses, as is the use of electronic communication tools to try to coerce others into performing unwanted sexual acts, explained study author Timothy Hagen of Epoka University.. In examining the literature on religiosity and sexual aggression, we found that religiosity may reduce sexual aggression by college males by reducing alcohol consumption, which is a strong predictor of sexual aggression. Seeing hints that there may be other possible paths by which religiosity impacted sexual aggression (SA) and technology-based sexually coercive behavior (TBC) by college males, we wanted to explore whether social norms, pornography consumption, and promiscuity were paths by which religiosity might impact SA and ...

African Traditional religion (ATR) is one of the world religions with a great people and a great past. It is embraced by Africans within and outside the continent despite the various ethnic religious practices and beliefs. This book highlights and discusses the common elements which introduce African Traditional Religion as one unified religion and not a collection of religions. The major focus of the book is discussing the need for studying ATR in twenty-first-century Africa whereby globalization and multi-culture are prominent phenomena. Why should we study the religion of indigenous Africans in this age? In response to this question, the book argues that since ATR is part of the African peoples culture, there is a need to understand this cultural background in order to contextualize Christian theology. Using some illustrations from Nyumbanitu worship shrine located at Njombe in Tanzania, the book purports that there is a need to understand African peoples worldview, their understanding of God,
Regular church attendance is the most critical factor in marital stability, regardless of denomination or doctrinal teaching on divorce. A 1993 survey of 3,300 men found that those who switch partners most are those with no religious convictions. Similarly, the rate of cohabitation before marriage is seven times higher among people who seldom or never attend religious services, a significant finding since couples who live together before marriage experience higher rates of divorce.. * Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have found cardiovascular disease significantly reduced by a lifetime of church attendance. Numerous other studies confirm that churchgoers live longer, with lower rates of cirrhosis, emphysema, and arteriosclerosis.. * Blood pressure is reduced an average of 5 mm of pressure by regular church attendance, 6 mm for people over 55. Given that reducing blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm also reduces the mortality rate by 10 to 20 percent for any given population, a reduction of 5 mm ...
Shifting from Western-dominated perspectives, this study aimed to investigate relationship between religion and work-family conflict and enrichment. SPSS analysis was conducted on data obtained through two self-report questionnaires completed three months apart by 296 executives and non-executives from six public and private sector organizations in Kuching, Sarawak. After controlling for conflict and enrichment at Time 1, aspects of religion (importance of religion and perception of religiousness) negatively related with work-family conflict and positively associated with work-family enrichment. The study underscores the roles religion, which have been neglected in Western studies, as important parts in shaping the work-family interface in Malaysia. Therefore, organizations should include religious activities to encourage work-life balance among employees.. ...

For those who do not understand the blind loyalty of people who follow Al Gore and his Global Warming crusade, you must understand that to them it is nothing short of a religious belief.. Thats right; Global Warming is a religion whose god is Mother Earth. For Al Gore and other politicians, its just another means to control the masses, but the religious aspect of Global Warming is ultimately how they are able to convince so many people that it truly does exist and man is responsible for creating it.. To really explain what it is I mean, I need to first define the term religion. Then I can show you how Global Warming fills all the needed requirements of a religion. To begin with, not all religions refer to God or gods. They do not all base their systems upon morals or some belief in an afterlife. Also, not all religious followers can properly explain exactly what it is they believe. The groups, practices and systems that we identify as religions are so diverse that it is no easy task to bring ...

Educators in the United States have already taken significant strides toward achieving these goals. During the past two decades, the practice and means of teaching about religion have become matters of consensus, according to our study, conducted by the Council on Islamic Education and copublished by the First Amendment Center (Douglass, 2000). The study looked for direct and indirect references to religion in national and state standards documents to ascertain what, when, and how much they include on teaching about religion. It tracked the grade levels and courses in which religion is taught.. We found that coverage of religion resides mainly in social studies standards, with additional coverage in language, literature, and fine arts standards. Most state standards incorporate religion in primary-level studies of communities, in elementary and secondary U.S. history and world history, in world cultures, and in geography. The standards commonly specify that students should know about the role of ...
D.Z. Phillips argues that intellectuals need not see their task as being for or against religion, but as one of understanding it. What stands in the way of this task is certain methodological assumptions about what enquiry into religion must be. Beginning with Bernard Williams on Greek gods, Phillips goes on to examine these assumptions in the work of Hume, Feurerbach, marx, Frazer, Tylor, Marett, Freud, Durkheim, L vy-Bruhl, Berger and Winch. The result exposes confusion, but also gives logical space to religious belief without advocating personal acceptance of that belief, and shows how the academic study of religion may return to the contemplative task of doing conceptual justice to the world. Religion and the Hermeneutics of Contemplation extends in important ways D.Z. Phillips seminal 1976 book Religion Without Explanation. It will be of interest to scholars and students of philosophy, anthropology, sociology and theology.
The first time I went to the American Academy of Religion conference it really got my hopes up. This was the fall of 2006 and, with only a summer in between, Id just finished college and begun my first year of a PhD program in religious studies. The AAR was at the enormous new Washington, DC convention center. Fittingly, one of the plenary speakers was Madeleine Albright, the former secretary of state who had just written a book about why religion is so important.. What I remember her saying, which stuck with me and probably a lot of the other graduate students in the hall, were things like this: Our diplomats need to be trained to know the religions of the countries where theyre going. And: I think the Secretary of State needs to have religion advisors. I hadnt really thought of it that way before, but it made great sense, especially with someone like Albright saying it. Religion is everywhere. It does matter. The ongoing sectarian violence in occupied Iraq had turned the headlines into ...
There has long been anecdotal evidence that sustained spiritual or religious practice can help improve peoples mood and general sense of well-being. For the first time, we may be on the cusp of understanding the neurological mechanisms underlying these long reported effects. A recent study from Columbia University has found that there is a strong correlation between how highly someone values spirituality and religion, and the structure of their brains in regions associated with depression. According to lead researcher Lisa Miller, participants who reported that spirituality and religion were of high personal importance had thicker than average cortices in regions where cortical thinning has been linked to a high risk of depression. Participants who did not report placing a significant importance on spirituality and depression had lower average cortical thicknesses in these regions.. The 103 study participants were divided into two groups - a high-risk group with a hereditary predisposition to ...

The dissertation contributes to the sociology of mental health by demonstrating that institutional and cultural settings shape the level of social cohesion and its influence on mental well-being. The dissertation consists of three independent but complementary essays. The first essay examines the influence of contexts on the link between social cohesion and suicide risk across countries in Americas, East Asia, and Europe. Using multilevel analysis, I show that marriage, parenthood, co-residence with parents, religious participation, and general social trust are all differentially related to suicide rates by region of the world. Whether a cohesive relationship is protective against suicide depends on contextual factors such as stigma against marital dissolution, welfare state regime, and the strength of religious networks. This essay contests Durkheims theory on social cohesion and suicide by showcasing the international variation in the benefits of social cohesion. In the second essay, I examine the
The religion and belief system of the Indus valley people have received considerable attention, especially from the view of identifying precursors to deities and religious practices of Indian religions that later developed in the area. However, due to the sparsity of evidence, which is open to varying interpretations, and the fact that the Indus script remains undeciphered, the conclusions are partly speculative and largely based on a retrospective view from a much later Hindu perspective.[22][23] An early and influential work in the area that set the trend for Hindu interpretations of archaeological evidence from the Harrapan sites[24] was that of John Marshall, who in 1931 identified the following as prominent features of the Indus religion: a Great Male God and a Mother Goddess; deification or veneration of animals and plants; symbolic representation of the phallus (linga) and vulva (yoni); and, use of baths and water in religious practice. Marshalls interpretations have been much debated, ...

So it seems I was wrong and the idea of religions as viruses of the mind may have had its day. Religions still provide a superb example of memeplexes at work, with different religions using their horrible threats, promises and tricks to out-compete other religions, and popular versions of religions outperforming the more subtle teachings of the mystical traditions. But unless we twist the concept of a virus to include something helpful and adaptive to its host as well as something harmful, it simply does not apply. Bacteria can be helpful as well as harmful; they can be symbiotic as well as parasitic, but somehow the phrase bacterium of the mind or symbiont of the mind doesnt have quite the same ring ...

The Calvary Baptist Church has a legal right to meet. The authority of a local Christian church, a Jewish synagogue, or a Muslim mosque to gather for their respective religious services is a time-honored part of our nations history since its inception, the statement said. These religious activities are also fully protected under the First Amendment to our United States Constitution.. Bell has been critical of government attempts to control coronavirus, and videos show he has held services without the use of social distancing. He hired a lawyer known nationally for defending the religious rights of churches. Thus for at least some Pulaya converts the distinctions between Christians and non-Christians were not as sharp as the missionaries expected.. Conclusion. Has Hortons theory any relevance to the Malayarayan and Pulaya conversions is worth examining in detail if somebody can take up the anthropolgical task. However, here let me make some brief observations:. Firstly, the two-tier structure of African cosmology does not fit the Pulayas pre-existing belief system which was multi-tiered, incorporating an hierarchy of gods. Spirits of the deceased ancestors had a significant role and position in their religious activities. On the next level were subordinate agents or malignant and malevolent spirits. Thevaratampuran (masters god), Bhagavati and Kali, comparatively high forms of deity, also figured in the Pulaya religious activities. Secondly, the preaching of the CMS missionaries was in direct contradiction to the Pulayas previously-held thought patterns and perceptions of God although certain ...
Its very true and completely unsurprising that Rossella, like most kids, shares her parents beliefs (or lack of). The more interesting question is: did how she arrive at those beliefs?. One of Richard Dawkins most provocative theses is that schools and even parents should not be allowed to proselytize children into religion at young ages. He points to lifelong traumas (both physical and mental) inflicted upon people (and cultures) from infancy, in the name of religion.. One might reasonably ask (many have) how Dawkins desire to promote atheism is any different from a religious persons desire to promote religion. The logic here seems to be: Atheism is just another belief. Why is it okay for you to preach what you believe, but not for religious people to do so?. Heres the fundamental difference: most religions teach their adherents - and particularly children - to accept certain strictures, norms, behaviors, etc. because someone in authority said so. Believers may be allowed to ...

The assumption of a necessary conflict between reason and religion has long informed discussions of the role of religion in modern society. This chapter describes and analyzes reflexive spirituality as a cultural movement that promotes the use of reason to enhance religious meaning. As a movement, reflexive spirituality represents an effort to bring an enhanced sense of transcendent meaning into the highly rationalized context of the United States. Practitioners offer a sophisticated cultural critique targeting modern societies preoccupation with literal meanings, to the exclusion of more profound meanings, both inside and outside of the religious sphere. Reflexive spirituality promotes metaphorical interpretation of traditional texts and rituals, wisdom gained from religious experience, and a critical embrace of religious pluralism.
The General Social Surveys (GSS) have been conducted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) annually since 1972, except for the years 1979, 1981, and 1992 (a supplement was added in 1992), and biennially beginning in 1994. The GSS are designed to be part of a program of social indicator research, replicating questionnaire items and wording in order to facilitate time-trend studies. The 2008 GSS featured special modules on attitudes toward science and technology, self-employment, terrorism preparation, global economics, sports and leisure, social inequality, sexual behaviors and religion. Items on religion covered denominational affiliation, church attendance, religious upbringing, personal beliefs, and religious experiences. The GSS is in transition from a replicating cross-sectional design to a design that uses rotating panels. In 2008 there were two components: a new 2008 cross-section with 2,023 cases and the first re-interviews (panel) with 1,536 respondents from the 2006 GSS. The 2,023
Background: Depressive disorder is often accompanied by physiological changes that may adversely affect the course of medical illness, including an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines. Methods: We examine the effects of religious cognitive behavioral therapy (RCBT) vs. conventional CBT (CCBT) on pro-/anti-inflammatory indicators and stress hormones in 132 individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) and chronic medical illness who were recruited into a multi-site randomized clinical trial. Biomarkers (C-reactive protein and pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-12-p70), anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL1ra, IL-4, IL-10), and stress hormones (urinary cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine) were assessed at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Differential effects of baseline religiosity on treatment response were also examined, along with effects of religiosity on changes in biomarkers over time independent of treatment group. Biomarker levels were log transformed
Theists and some apologists for religion feel that only those who actually kill or cause harm, or order it, should be criticised, but not the idea, the religion concerned. This is like saying Hitler should be criticised but not Nazism. This is giving free pass to dangerous inhuman irrational ideas. I do not want to give such a free pass.. Does that make me Hinduphobic or Muslimphobic ?. What is a phobia ? As per Oxford Dictionary it is an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.. No, I do not have such a fear or aversion of Hindus or Muslims or of any theists as an individual.. Does that make me Hinduism-phobic or Islamophobic ?. It is true that I have an aversion to most religions. I also have a fear, may be not extreme due to my location, that I can be harassed or harmed by people inspired by love and devotion for religions, because I debate and criticise them. I consider it as a rational fear. So I can be justly called Hinduism-phobic or Islamophobic or Christianity-phobic if ...

Edward Baileys work was pioneering and challenging in that it questioned a widely held assumption that religion was the sole prerogative of institutions devoted to religion. He sought to discover the sacred within what might otherwise be dismissed as profane, and to identify experiences of the holy within an apparently irreligious realm. Implicit Religion enabled…
